Conflict and Consensus

There are widely differing conceptions as to whether healthy social relations are, in essence, conflictual or consensual; such differences give rise to different approaches to finding peace and managing power. This article outlines the two broad schools of thought from conflict theory (in which society functions through competition) and consensus theory (which sees society developing through cooperation). It outlines the middle ground between them, as found by pluralism and agonism, before considering the ways in which assumptions vis-a-vis conflict and consensus are reflected in different models of democratic system and, in particular, different priorities for post-conflict recovery.

This article examines the osseous technologies that can be created from animal skeletons. 'Tool' status is accorded to a skeletal element or fragment that has been modified subsequent to its isolation from the carcass. Such anthropic adaptation may be deliberate (e.g., through manufacture) and/or appear as a result of utilization, and is granted in instances where these details cannot otherwise be ascribed to alternative nonanthropic causes. Implements can display a combination of traces from both human and natural sources and as such the study of them involves both zooarchaeological (i.e., via animal ecology, hunting, and butchery) and technological analysis.... As an exemplar of this, the following discussion will present some of the similarities and differences that exist between osseous and lithic raw materials and tool-blank production, and will situate both in an operational sequence of animal procurement and processing. Unconventional Computing: A Boolean Chemical Perspective

Elementary computing operations can be arranged within molecules so that problems in chemical, biochemical, and biological situations can be addressed. Problems that are found in small and/or living spaces, where the corresponding semiconductor logic devices cannot operate conveniently, are particularly amenable to this approach. The visualization and monitoring of intracellular species is one such category. Problems in medical diagnostics and therapy form additional categories. Chemists and biologists employ chemical synthesis and molecular biology techniques to build molecular logic devices. The photochemical approach to molecular logic devices is particularly prevalent. Urban Conflicts

Three sources of urban conflicts are identified: (1) changing state-city relationships; (2) the relationship between the dynamics of capitalist development and cities and (3) the specific dynamics of urban life and the urban environment where the city itself is seen as a causal variable. Two sets of questions cross-cut all three strands. The first addresses how violent conflicts can be regulated, transformed and rendered into more constructive non-violent conflicts through the processes of urban civil society. The second concerns how, why, and where urban conflicts turn violent and with what consequences. In summary cities now rival states as arenas and stakes in political conflict and urban conflicts have increasing transnational and transcultural salience which underlines the necessity for sustained comparative analyis

Peace Processes

Peace processes are defined as the series of actions that lead up to the resolution of conflict and the negotiation and signing of a peace accord, as well as the series of actions that implement and consolidate the agreement afterward. A critical distinction is made between political and social peace processes and the series of actions that address these different types are outlined and discussed. The tension that can exist between them is emphasized and reasons are given to explain why peace processes can be so fragile.
