Atomic oxygen surface loss coefficient measurements in a capacitive/inductive radio-frequency plasma
Resumo:
Spatially resolved measurements of the atomic oxygen densities close to a sample surface in a dual mode (capacitive/inductive) rf plasma are used to measure the atomic oxygen surface loss coefficient beta on stainless steel and aluminum substrates, silicon and silicon dioxide wafers, and on polypropylene samples. beta is found to be particularly sensitive to the gas pressure for both operating modes. It is concluded that this is due to the effect of changing atom and ion flux to the surface. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Reproducible modulations in low-pressure, inductively coupled discharges operating in chlorine and argon-chlorine mixtures have been observed and studied. Changes in the light output, floating potential, negative ion fraction, and charged particle densities were observed. Here we report two types of unstable operational modes in an inductively coupled discharge. On the one hand, when the discharge was matched, to minimize reflected power, instabilities were observed in argon-chlorine plasmas over limited operating conditions of input power and gas pressure. The instability window decreased with increasing chlorine content and was observed for chlorine concentrations between 30% and 60% only. However, when operating at pressures below 5 mTorr and the discharge circuit detuned to increase the reflected power, modulations were observed in a pure chlorine discharge. These modulations varied in nature from a series of sharp bursts to a very periodic behavior and can be controlled, by variation of the matching conditions, to produce an apparent pulsed plasma environment. A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) generated by flowing helium between the parallel-plate electrodes of an open air reactor has been characterized using time resolved optical and electrical measurements. A sinusoidal voltage of up to 5 kV (peak to peak) of frequencies from 3 to 50 kHz has been applied to the discharge electrodes. The helium flow rate is varied up to 10 litre min(-1). The adjustment of flow rate allows the creation of uniform DBDs with optimized input power equal to 120 +/- 10 mW cm(-3). At flow rates from 4 to 6 litre min(-1) a uniform DBD is obtained. The maxima in the line intensities of N-2(+) and helium at 391.4 nm and 706.5 nm, respectively, 2 under those conditions indicate the importance of helium metastables and He-2(+) in sustaining such a discharge. The power efficiency and discharge 2 current show maxima when the DBD In He/air is uniform. The gas temperature during the discharge has been measured as 360 +/- 20 K.

The density of metastable helium atoms in a dielectric barrier discharge operating in helium with some impurities present has been measured using laser-collisional-induced fluorescence and absorption techniques. Time-resolved measurements indicate that helium metastables contribute to the production of impurity ions, in this case N-2(+), in the postdischarge current phase of a glow discharge. In our particular discharge environment, the helium metastable density is (1.5+/-1.4)x10(10) cm(-3), a result consistent with failure to observe absorption by metastables in a multipass absorption measurement. The electronic and bonding properties of nitrogenated carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) exposed to chlorine plasma were investigated using C and N K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM). The C and N K-edge XANES spectra of chlorine-treated N-CNTs consistently reveal the formation of pyridinelike N-CNTs by the observation of 1s ->pi(*)(e(2u)) antibonding and 1s ->pi(*)(b(2g)) bonding states. The valence-band photoemission spectra obtained from SPEM images indicate that chlorination of the nanotubes enhances the C-N bonding. First-principles calculations of the partial densities of states in conjunction with C K-edge XANES data identify the presence of C-Cl bonding in chlorine treated N-CNTs. To visualize the development of an atmospheric pressure glow discharge in He and the influence of polymer film on the discharge, short exposure time images were recorded using a gated intensified charge coupled detector. If the polymer film is stretched in the middle of the gap, a discharge region on each side of the polymer is created with the characteristic structure of a glow discharge. In this case, strongly asymmetric discharge current pulses can be generated depending on the frequency and the applied voltage.
