The process for obtaining polypyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (PPY-2-COOH) films in acetonitrile was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical quartz crystal microgravimetry (EQCM), and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Different potential ranges were applied during cyclic voltammetry experiments with the aim of obtaining films without and with the presence of controlled amounts of water added in acetonitrile. The FTIR spectra of the films have evidenced that cations and anions from the electrolyte solution were incorporated into the PPY-2-COOH structure, with a preferential adsorption of cations. After chemically immobilizing polyphenoloxidase (tyrosinase, PPO), PPY-2-COOH/PPO films were build for amperometric detection of catechol, establishing a linear limit of concentrations ranging from 5.0 x 10-4 to 2.5 x 10-2 mol L-1.

A theoretical approach is used here to explain experimental results obtained from the electrosynthesis of polypyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (PPY-2-COOH) films in nonaqueous medium. An analysis of the Fukui function (reactivity index) indicates that the monomer (pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid, PY-2-COOH), and dimers and trimers are oxidized in the C4 or C5 positions of the heterocyclic ring of the PY-2-COOH structure. After calculating the heat of formation using semiempirical Austin Model 1 post-Hartree-Fock parameterization for dimer species, both C4 and C5 positions adjacent to the aromatic rings of PPY-2-COOH were considered the most susceptible ones to oxidative coupling reactions. The ZINDO-S/CI semiempirical method was used to simulate the electronic transitions typically seen in the UV-VIS-NIR range in monomer and oligomers with different conjugation lengths. The use of an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance provides sufficient information to propose a polymerization mechanism of PY-2-COOH based on molecular modeling and experimental results.

The synthesis of a functionalized 1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid has been performed in 10 steps from the readily available dimedone. Only three purifications by flash chromatography are required through the whole sequence. The key step is the reaction between a dimedone derivative and a chlorotetrolic ester, that gives a tetrasubstituted benzene ring (through a Diels-Alder/retro- Diels-Alder process) bearing the substituents in the suitable positions for further functionalization. The kinetics of the homogeneous acylation of microcrystalline cellulose, MCC, with carboxylic acid anhydrides with different acyl chain-length (Nc; ethanoic to hexanoic) in LiCl/N,N-dimethylacetamide have been studied by conductivity measurements from 65 to 85 A degrees C. We have employed cyclohexylmethanol, CHM, and trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol, CHD, as model compounds for the hydroxyl groups of the anhydroglucose unit of cellulose. The ratios of rate constants of acylation of primary (CHM; Prim-OH) and secondary (CHD; Sec-OH) groups have been employed, after correction, in order to split the overall rate constants of the reaction of MCC into contributions from the discrete OH groups. For the model compounds, we have found that k((Prim-OH))/k((Sec-OH)) > 1, akin to reactions of cellulose under heterogeneous conditions; this ratio increases as a function of increasing Nc. The overall, and partial rate constants of the acylation of MCC decrease from ethanoic- to butanoic-anhydride and then increase for pentanoic- and hexanoic anhydride, due to subtle changes in- and compensations of the enthalpy and entropy of activation.

In this conference we report cross sections for elastic collisions of low-energy electrons with the HCOOH…(H2O)n complexes, with n = 1, 2 and 3. The scattering cross sections were computed with the Schwinger multichannel method [K. Takatsuka and V. McKoy, Phys. Rev. A 24 , 2473 (1981); Phys. Rev. A 30 , 1734 (1984)] with pseudopotentials [M. H. F. Bettega, L. G. Ferreira, and M. A. P. Lima, Phys. Rev. A 47, 1111 (1993)] in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization approximations, for energies from 0.5 eV to 6 eV. We considered some diÆerent hydrogen-bonded structures for the complexes that were generated with classical Monte Carlo simulations [K. Coutinho and S. Canuto, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 9132, (2000)]. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the surrounding water molecules on the π* shape resonance of the solute. Previous theoretical and experimental studies carried out in the gas phase reported a π* state for HCOOH at around 1.9 eV. For the n = 1 case and for all complexes, the stabilization of the resonance was observed (it appears at lower energy compared to the value obtained in the gas phase), as reported previously for the CH2O…H2O complexes [T. C. Freitas, M. A. P. Lima, S. Canuto, and M. H. F. Bettega, Phys. Rev. A 80, 062710 (2009)]. This result indicates that the presence of the solvent may affect the processes related to the π* state, such as the molecular dissociation by electron impact. For the n = 2 case we have observed both stabilization and destabilization of the π* resonance, that is associated with the hydrogen bond donor or acceptor role of the water molecules in the complexes. For the n = 3 case, preliminary static-exchange results show the stabilization of the π* state. We propose an explanation of the stabilization/destabilization of the π* state in terms of the polarization of the solute due to the surrounding water molecules and the net charge in the solute.

This work describes the synthesis of a series of sialylmimetic neoglycoconjugates represented by 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole-sialic acid derivatives containing galactose modified at either C-1 or C-6 positions, glucose or gulose at C-3 position, and by the amino acid derivative 1,2,3-triazole fused threonine-3-O-galactose as potential TcTS inhibitors and anti-trypanosomal agents. This series was obtained by Cu(I)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction ('click chemistry') between the azido-functionalized sugars 1-N(3)-Gal (commercial), 6-N(3)-Gal, 3-N(3)-Glc and 3-N(3)-Gul with the corresponding alkyne-based 2-propynyl-sialic acid, as well as by click chemistry reaction between the amino acid N(3)-ThrOBn with 3-O-propynyl-GalOMe. The 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose and the sialic acid-galactopyranoside showed high Trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase (TcTS) inhibitory activity at 1.0 mM (approx. 90%), whilst only the former displayed relevant trypanocidal activity (IC(50) 260 mu M). These results highlight the 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose as a prototype for further design of new neoglycoconjugates against Chagas' disease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The title compound [Ni(C20H15N2OS)(2)] is prepared by the reaction of metal acetate with the corresponding acylthiourea derivative. The complex is characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, and its structure is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Ni(II) ion is coordinated by the S and O atoms of two N-benzoyl-N',N'-diphenylthiourea ligands in a slightly distorted square-planar coordination geometry. The two O and two S atoms are mutually cis to each other. The substance crystallizes triclinic (P-1 space group) with cell dimensions a = 10.7262(9) , b = 12.938(3) , c = 14.2085(12) , alpha = 74.650(4)A degrees, beta = 78.398(4)A degrees, gamma = 68.200(5)A degrees, and two formula units in the unit cell. The structure is very close to the related N-(2-furoyl) Ni complex reported previously.

MeOH extract from the leaves of Plectranthus barbatus Andrews (Lamiaceae), showed in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity. The bioassay-guided fractionation resulted in the isolation of a gallic acid derivative, identified as 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-beta-D-glucose (PGG), after thorough NMR and MS spectral analysis. Finally, this compound was tested against trypomastigote forms of T. cruzi and displayed an EC50 value of 67 mu M, at least 6.6-fold more effective than the standard drug benznidazole. This is the first occurrence of PGG in the Plectranthus genus and the first anti-parasitic activity described for PGG in the literature.

In the title complex, [Ru(C12H8N2)2(C5H6N2)2](PF6)2, the RuII atom is bonded to two -diimine ligands, viz. 1,10- phenanthroline (phen), in a cis configuration, in addition with with two 4-aminopyridine (4Apy) ligands, resulting in a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. N—H F hydrogen-bonding interactions play an important role in the crystal assembly: 21-screw-axis-related complex molecules and PF6 counter-ions alternate in helical chains formed along the a axis by means of these contacts. N—H contacts (H centroid = 3.45 A ° ) are responsible for cross-linking between the helical chains along [001].

The ( Z)-4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-buten-1-one (C12H12F3NO3) compound was thoroughly studied by IR, Raman, UV-visible, and C-13 and F-19 NMR spectroscopies. The solid-state molecular structure was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the P2(1)/c space group with a = 12.1420(4) angstrom, b = 7.8210(3) angstrom, c := 13.8970(5) angstrom, beta = 116.162(2)degrees, and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The molecule shows a nearly planar molecular skeleton, favored by intramolecular OH center dot center dot center dot 0 and NH center dot center dot center dot 0 bonds, which are arranged in the lattice as an OH center dot center dot center dot 0 bonded polymer coiled around crystallographic 2-fold screw-axes. The three postulated tautomers were evaluated using quantum chemical calculations. The lowest energy tautomer (I) calculated with density functional theory methods agrees with the observed crystal structure. The structural and conformational properties are discussed considering the effect of the intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions.

We have developed an efficient method for the synthesis of functionalized C-glycosyl 1,2,3-triazoles through a Cu(1)-promoted azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between a TMS-protected C-alkynyl-glycoside and organic azides. The reaction was accelerated by ultrasound irradiation and the addition of a base was not necessary to obtain the 1,2,3-triazole product. Moreover, further manipulation of the products led to chiral molecules with a C-glycoside linkage. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A general method for the synthesis of triazoles containing selenium and tellurium was accomplished via a CuCAAC reaction between organic azides and a terminal triple bond, generated by in situ deprotection of the silyl group. The reaction tolerates alkyl and arylazides, with alkyl and aryl substituents directly bonded to the chalcogen atom. The products were readily functionalized by a nickel-catalyzed Negishi cross-coupling reaction, furnishing the aryl-heteroaryl products at the 4-position in good yields. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Five 2-hydroxy-3-substituted-aminomethyl naphthoquinones, nine 1,2,3-triazolic para-naphthoquinones, five nor-beta-lapachone-based 1,2,3-triazoles, and several other naphthoquinonoid compounds were synthesized and evaluated against the infective bloodstream form of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, continuing our screening program for new trypanocidal compounds. Among all the substances, 16-18, 23, 25-29 and 30-33 were herein described for the first time and fifteen substances were identified as more potent than the standard drug benznidazole, with IC50/24 h values in the range of 10.9-101.5 mu M. Compounds 14 and 19 with Selectivity Index of 18.9 and 6.1 are important structures for further studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Schiff base ligand: N,N'-bis(1-phenylethylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine (L), was derived from acetophenone and ethylenediamine by condensation and its complexes (1-5) were prepared with Pb2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ metal ions. Their structures were characterized by FAB-MS, IR spectra, elemental analyses and molar conductance. The octahedral geometry of the complexes was proposed by electronic spectra and magnetic moment data. The conductivity data showed that the complexes have non-electrolytic nature. The complexes (1-5) have higher in vitro antimicrobial activity than the Schiff base ligand (L). In the nuclease activity, the complexes cleave DNA as compared to control DNA in the presence of H2O2.
