The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied in KOH electrolyte on carbon supported epsilon-manganese dioxide (epsilon-MnO2/C). The epsilon-MnO2/C catalyst was prepared via thermal decomposition of manganese nitrate and carbon powder (Vulcan XC-72) mixtures. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed in order to determine the crystalline structure of the resulting composite, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) was used to evaluate the chemical composition of the synthesized material. The electrochemical studies were conducted using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and quasi-steady state polarization measurements carried out with an ultra thin layer rotating ring/disk electrode (RRDE) configuration. The electrocatalytic results obtained for 20% (w/w) Pt/C (E-TEK Inc., USA) and alpha-MnO2/C for the ORR, considered as one of the most active manganese oxide based catalyst for the ORR in alkaline media, were included for comparison. The RRDE results revealed that the ORR on the MnO2 catalysts proceeds preferentially through the complete 4e(-) reduction pathway via a 2 plus 2e(-) reduction process involving hydrogen peroxide as an intermediate. A benchmark close to the performance of 20% (w/w) Pt/C (E-TEK Inc., USA) was observed for the epsilon-MnO2/C material in the kinetic control region, superior to the performance of alpha-MnO2/C, but a higher amount of HO2- was obtained when epsilon-MnO2/C was used as catalyst. The higher production of hydrogen peroxide on epsilon-MnO2/C was related to the presence of structural defects, typical of this oxide, while the better catalytic performance in the kinetic control region compared to alpha-MnO2/C was related with the higher electrochemical activity for the proton insertion kinetics, which is a structure sensitive process. The effect of trace quantities of ammonia on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on carbon-supported platinum catalysts in perchloric acid solutions is assessed using rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The study demonstrates that ammonia has detrimental effects on ORR. The most significant effect takes place in the potential region above 0.7 V vs RHE. The effect is explained by the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia, which blocks Pt active sites and increases the formation of H2O2. This leads to losses in the disk currents and increments in the ring currents. The apparent losses in ORR currents may occur in two ways, namely, through the blocking of the active sites for ORR as well as by generating a small anodic current, which is believed to have a lower contribution. In addition, a detrimental effect of sodium cations in the potential range below 0.75 V vs RHE was demonstrated. This effect is most likely due to the co-adsorption of sodium cations and perchlorate anions on the Pt surface. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A comparative study using different proportions of CeO2/C (4%, 9% and 13% CeO2) was performed to produce H2O2, a reagent used in the oxidation of organic pollutants and in electro-Fenton reactions for the production of the hydroxyl radical (OH center dot), a strong oxidant agent used in the electrochemical treatment of aqueous wastewater. The CeO2/C materials were prepared by a modified polymeric precursor method (PPM). X-ray diffraction analysis of the CeO2/C prepared by the PPM identified two phases. CeO2 and CeO2. The average size of the crystallites in these materials was close to 7 nm. The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were evaluated by the rotating ring-disk electrode technique. The results showed that the 4% CeO2/C prepared by the PPM was the best composite for the production of H2O2 in a 1 mol L-1 NaOH electrolyte solution. For this material, the number of electrons transferred and the H2O2 percentage efficiency were 3.1 and 44%, respectively. The ring-current of the 4% CeO2/C was higher than that of Vulcan carbon, the reference material for H2O2 production, which produced 41% H2O2 and transferred 3.1 electrons per molecule of oxygen. The overpotential for this reaction on the ceria-based catalyst was substantially lower (approximately 200 mV), demonstrating the higher catalytic performance of this material. Gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) containing the catalyst were used to evaluate the real amount of H2O2 produced during exhaustive electrolysis. The 4% CeO2/C GDE produced 871 mg L-1 of H2O2, whereas the Vulcan carbon GDE produced a maximum amount of only 407 mg L-1. Thus, the 4% CeO2/C electrocatalyst prepared by the PPM is a promising material for H2O2 electrogeneration in alkaline media. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The deformation of a ring under axial compression is analyzed in order to estimate a favorable ring specimen geometry capable of limiting the influence of friction on the stress-strain curve obtained from SHPB tests. The analysis shows that the use of a ring specimen with a large inner diameter and a small radial thickness offers some advantages comparing with the traditional disk sample. In particular, it can improve the reliability of the test results for ductile materials in the presence of friction. Based on the deformation analysis of a ductile ring under compression, a correction coefficient is proposed to relate the actual material stress strain curve with the reading from the SHPB. It is shown using finite element simulation that the proposed correction can be used for a wide range of conventional ductile materials. Experimental results with steel alloys indicate that the correction procedure is an effective technique for an accurate measurement of the dynamic material strength response. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To compare 2 methods used to determine the disk position based on sagittal magnetic resonance images. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study of patients with the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders was conducted. The patients' ages and gender distributions were collected. The disk position diagnosis from the clinical examination was considered the primary outcome. Three observers evaluated the presence of anterior displacement on magnetic resonance images according to 2 criteria: method 1 (12-o'clock position) and method 2 (location of the intermediate zone). To assess the intraobserver variability of the 2 methods, the examiners evaluated the same magnetic resonance images at the beginning of the study (time 1) and 40 days later (time 2). The intraobserver agreement was assessed using the observed agreement and the kappa statistic. McNemar's test was used to assess the differences between each method and the clinical examination findings (P < .05). The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were calculated by comparing the diagnosis from each method with that from the clinical examination (considered the reference standard). Results: The final sample was composed of 20 subjects with a mean age of 33.0 +/- 33.7 years; 3 were men (15%) and 17 were women (85%). A statistically significant difference between the 2 methods was found. Method 1 yielded a greater percentage of anterior displaced disks (52.5%). The agreement between the clinical diagnosis and method 1 was lower (70.0%) than that between the clinical diagnosis and method 2 (87.5%). No statistically significant difference was found between the clinical diagnosis and method 2. Conclusion: The disk position should be judged according to the intermediate zone criterion. Background: Combined oral contraceptives used in an extended regimen have been studied because of their potential benefits; however, there have been few publications on extended regimens of contraceptive vaginal rings. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of these two extended regimens on the lipid metabolism of women using these contraceptive methods during 1 year. Study Design: This prospective study enrolled 150 women: 75 used a vaginal contraceptive ring (11.7 mg etonogestrel and 2.7 mg ethinyl estradiol), and 75 used oral contraceptives (30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 150 mg desogestrel). Both groups used their respective method for 84 days followed by a 7-day pause during I year. At baseline and every 3 months during the study period, blood was collected to assess total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and B. The analysis of variance test was used to analyze differences in the results of these exams over time. Results: A total of 62 vaginal ring and 61 oral contraceptive users completed the study. There were no significant differences in the discontinuation rate, mean total cholesterol and fraction levels, apo B concentration or apo A-I/apo B ratio. Vaginal ring users had significantly higher apo A-I levels than oral contraceptive users. Conclusion: Despite the vaginal route of administration, the steroids released by the ring had the same effects on the lipid metabolism and lipoprotein levels typically seen with ethinyl estradiol given either by oral or parenteral routes. Defects in the COP9 signalosome (CSN) impair multicellular development, including embryonic plant or animal death or a block in sexual development of the fungus Aspergillus nidulans. CSN deneddylates cullin-RING ligases (CRLs), which are activated by covalent linkage to ubiquitin-like NEDD8. Deneddylation allows CRL disassembly for subsequent reassembly. An attractive hypothesis is a consecutive order of CRLs for development, which demands repeated cycles of neddylation and deneddylation for reassembling CRLs. Interruption of these cycles could explain developmental blocks caused by csn mutations. This predicts an accumulation of neddylated CRLs exhibiting developmental functions when CSN is dysfunctional. We tested this hypothesis in A. nidulans, which tolerates reduced levels of neddylation for growth. We show that only genes for CRL subunits or neddylation are essential, whereas CSN is primarily required for development. We used functional tagged NEDD8, recruiting all three fungal cullins. Cullins are associated with the CSN1/CsnA subunit when deneddylation is defective. Two CRLs were identified which are specifically involved in differentiation and accumulate during the developmental block. This suggests that an active CSN complex is required to counteract the accumulation of specific CRLs during development.

Be stars possess gaseous circumstellar decretion disks, which are well described using standard alpha-disk theory. The Be star 28 CMa recently underwent a long outburst followed by a long period of quiescence, during which the disk dissipated. Here we present the first time-dependent models of the dissipation of a viscous decretion disk. By modeling the rate of decline of the V-band excess, we determine that the viscosity parameter alpha = 1.0 +/- 0.2, corresponding to a mass injection rate (M) over dot = (3.5 +/- 1.3) x 10(-8) M-circle dot yr(-1). Such a large value of a suggests that the origin of the turbulent viscosity is an instability in the disk whose growth is limited by shock dissipation. The mass injection rate is more than an order of magnitude larger than the wind mass-loss rate inferred from UV observations, implying that the mass injection mechanism most likely is not the stellar wind, but some other mechanism.

This work investigates the behavior of the sunspot number and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) signal recorded in the tree ring time series for three different locations in Brazil: Humaita in Amaznia State, Porto Ferreira in So Paulo State, and Passo Fundo in Rio Grande do Sul State, using wavelet and cross-wavelet analysis techniques. The wavelet spectra of tree ring time series showed signs of 11 and 22 years, possibly related to the solar activity, and periods of 2-8 years, possibly related to El Nio events. The cross-wavelet spectra for all tree ring time series from Brazil present a significant response to the 11-year solar cycle in the time interval between 1921 to after 1981. These tree ring time series still have a response to the second harmonic of the solar cycle (5.5 years), but in different time intervals. The cross-wavelet maps also showed that the relationship between the SOI x tree ring time series is more intense, for oscillation in the range of 4-8 years.

BACKGROUND: Alkaline sulfite/anthraquinone (ASA) cooking of Pinus radiata and Pinus caribaea wood chips followed by disk refining was used as a pretreatment for the production of low lignified and high fibrillated pulps. The pulps produced with different delignification degrees and refined at different energy inputs (250, 750 and 1600 Wh) were saccharified with cellulases and fermented to ethanol with Saccharomyces cerevisiae using separated hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) or semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSSF) processes. RESULTS: Delignification of ASA pulps was between 25% and 50%, with low glucans losses. Pulp yield was from 70 to 78% for pulps of P. radiata and 60% for the pulp of P. caribaea. Pulps obtained after refining were evaluated in assays of enzymatic hydrolysis. Glucans-to-glucose conversion varied from 20 to 70%, depending on the degree of delignification and fibrillation of the pulps. The best ASA pulp of P. radiata was used in SHF and SSSF experiments of ethanol production. Such experiments produced maximum ethanol concentration of 20 g L-1, which represented roughly90% of glucose conversion and an estimated amount of 260 L ethanol ton(-1) wood. P. caribaea pulp also presented good performance in the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation but, due to the low amount of cellulose present, only 140 L ethanol would be obtained from each ton of wood. CONCLUSION: ASA cooking followed by disk refining was shown to be an efficient pretreatment process, which generated a low lignified and high-fibrillated substrate that allowed the production of ethanol from the softwoods with high conversion yields. Aims. Spectroscopic, polarimetric, and high spectral resolution interferometric data covering the period 1995-2011 are analyzed to document the transition into a new phase of circumstellar disk activity in the classical Be-shell star 48 Lib. The objective is to use this broad data set to additionally test disk oscillations as the basic underlying dynamical process. Methods. The long-term disk evolution is described using the V/R ratio of the violet and red emission components of H alpha and Br gamma, radial velocities and profiles of He I and optical metal shell lines, as well as multi-band BVRI polarimetry. Single-epoch broad-band and high-resolution interferometric visibilities and phases are discussed with respect to a classical disk model and the given baseline orientations. Results. Spectroscopic signatures of disk asymmetries in 48 Lib vanished in the late nineties but recovered some time between 2004 and 2007, as shown by a new large-amplitude and long-duration V/R cycle. Variations in the radial velocity and line profile of conventional shell lines correlate with the V/R behavior. They are shared by narrow absorption cores superimposed on otherwise seemingly photospheric He I lines, which may form in high-density gas at the inner disk close to the photosphere. Large radial velocity variations continued also during the V/R-quiet years, suggesting that V/R may not always be a good indicator of global density waves in the disk. The comparison of the polarization after the recovery of the V/R activity shows a slight increase, while the polarization angle has been constant for more than 20 years, placing tight limits on any 3-D precession or warping of the disk. The broad H-band interferometry gives a disk diameter of (1.72 +/- 0.2) mas (equivalent to 15 stellar radii), position angle of the disk (50 +/- 9)degrees and a relatively low disk flattening of 1.66 +/- 0.3. Within the errors the same disk position angle is derived from polarimetric observations and from photocenter shifts across Br gamma. The high-resolution interferometric visibility and phase profiles show a double or even multiple-component structure. A preliminary estimate based on the size of the Br gamma emitting region indicates a large diameter for the disk (tens of stellar radii). Overall, no serious contradiction between the observations and the disk-oscillation model could be construed.

Purpose: To present 7 cases of peripheral sterile corneal infiltrates that occurred after corneal cross-linking (CXL) for progressive keratectasia. Methods: Seven patients who had their progressive keratoconus documented underwent corneal deepithelization and subsequently CXL, which was performed with the application of 0.1% riboflavin with 20% dextran, and exposure to UVA light (370 nm, 2.9-3.1 mW/cm(2)) for 30 minutes. Results: Nearly a week after the procedure, the patients presented with peripheral stromal infiltrates. The ring-like infiltrates were superficial and were present at the 9.0-mm zone. Sterile infiltration was diagnosed. Patients were treated with topical corticosteroids, and complete resolution was achieved after a few weeks of treatment. Conclusions: We hypothesize that the phototoxic effect on the corneal stroma may be the main mechanism that triggers these infiltrates. Alternatively, alterations in antigenicity that occur in native proteins after CXL could result in patients recognizing the proteins as nonself and mounting immune responses.

Background The breakpoints and mechanisms of ring chromosome formation were studied and mapped in 14 patients. Methods Several techniques were performed such as genome-wide array, MLPA (Multiplex Ligation-Dependent Probe Amplification) and FISH (Fluorescent in situ Hybridization). Results The ring chromosomes of patients I to XIV were determined to be, respectively: r(3)(p26.1q29), r(4)(p16.3q35.2), r(10)(p15.3q26.2), r(10)(p15.3q26.13), r(13)(p13q31.1), r(13)(p13q34), r(14)(p13q32.33), r(15)(p13q26.2), r(18)(p11.32q22.2), r(18)(p11.32q21.33), r(18)(p11.21q23), r(22)(p13q13.33), r(22)(p13q13.2), and r(22)(p13q13.2). These rings were found to have been formed by different mechanisms, such as: breaks in both chromosome arms followed by end-to-end reunion (patients IV, VIII, IX, XI, XIII and XIV); a break in one chromosome arm followed by fusion with the subtelomeric region of the other (patients I and II); a break in one chromosome arm followed by fusion with the opposite telomeric region (patients III and X); fusion of two subtelomeric regions (patient VII); and telomere-telomere fusion (patient XII). Thus, the r(14) and one r(22) can be considered complete rings, since there was no loss of relevant genetic material. Two patients (V and VI) with r(13) showed duplication along with terminal deletion of 13q, one of them proved to be inverted, a mechanism known as inv-dup-del. Ring instability was detected by ring loss and secondary aberrations in all but three patients, who presented stable ring chromosomes (II, XIII and XIV). Conclusions We concluded that the clinical phenotype of patients with ring chromosomes may be related with different factors, including gene haploinsufficiency, gene duplications and ring instability. Epigenetic factors due to the circular architecture of ring chromosomes must also be considered, since even complete ring chromosomes can result in phenotypic alterations, as observed in our patients with complete r(14) and r(22).

The present star formation rate (SFR) in the inner Galaxy is puzzling for the chemical evolution models (CEM). No static CEM is able to reproduce the peak of the SFR in the 4 kpc ring. The main reason is probably a shortage of gas, which could be due to the dynamical effects produced by the galactic bar, not considered by these models. We developed a CEM that includes radial gas flows in order to mimic the effects of the galactic bar in the first 5 kpc of the galactic disk. In this model, the star formation (SF) is a two-step process: first, the diffuse gas forms molecular clouds. Then, stars form from cloud-cloud collisions or by the interaction between massive stars and the molecular gas. The former is called spontaneous and the latter induced SF. The mass in the different phases of each region changes by the processes associated with the stellar formation and death by: the SF due to spontaneous fragmentation of gas in the halo; formation of gas clouds in the disk from the diffuse gas; induced SF in the disk due to the interaction between massive stars and gas clouds; and finally, the restitution of the diffuse gas associated to these process of cloud and star formation. In the halo, the star formation rate for the diffuse gas follows a Schmidt law with a power n = 1.5. In the disk, the stars form in two steps: first, molecular clouds are formed from the diffuse gas also following a Schmidt law with n=1.5 and a proportionality factor. Including a specific pattern of radial gas flows, the CEM is able to reproduce with success the peak in the SFR at 4 kpc (fig. 1).
