The novel coumarin-based 'turn-on' fluorescent probe (E)-3-(2,5-dimethoxybenzylideneamino)-7-hydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (MGM) was designed, synthesized, and characterized. This compound shows high selectivity for Cu+2, combined with a large fluorescence enhancement upon binding to Cu2+. Benesi-Hildebrand and Job plots demonstrate that the stoichiometry of the Cu+2 complex formed is 2:1. Preliminary studies employing epifluorescence microscopy demonstrated that Cu+2 could be imaged in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells treated with MGM. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The wide variety of molecular architectures used in sensors and biosensors and the large amount of data generated with some principles of detection have motivated the use of computational methods, such as information visualization techniques, not only to handle the data but also to optimize sensing performance. In this study, we combine projection techniques with micro-Raman scattering and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to address critical issues related to practical applications of electronic tongues (e-tongues) based on impedance spectroscopy. Experimentally, we used sensing units made with thin films of a perylene derivative (AzoPTCD acronym), coating Pt interdigitated electrodes, to detect CuCl(2) (Cu(2+)), methylene blue (MB), and saccharose in aqueous solutions, which were selected due to their distinct molecular sizes and ionic character in solution. The AzoPTCD films were deposited from monolayers to 120 nm via Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques. Because the main aspects investigated were how the interdigitated electrodes are coated by thin films (architecture on e-tongue) and the film thickness, we decided to employ the same material for all sensing units. The capacitance data were projected into a 2D plot using the force scheme method, from which we could infer that at low analyte concentrations the electrical response of the units was determined by the film thickness. Concentrations at 10 mu M or higher could be distinguished with thinner films tens of nanometers at most-which could withstand the impedance measurements, and without causing significant changes in the Raman signal for the AzoPTCD film-forming molecules. The sensitivity to the analytes appears to be related to adsorption on the film surface, as inferred from Raman spectroscopy data using MB as analyte and from the multidimensional projections. The analysis of the results presented may serve as a new route to select materials and molecular architectures for novel sensors and biosensors, in addition to suggesting ways to unravel the mechanisms behind the high sensitivity obtained in various sensors.

The preparation, crystal structure and magnetic properties of a new oxalate-containing copper(II) chain of formula {[(CH3)(4)N](2)]Cu(C2O4)(2)] center dot H2O}(n) (1) [(CH3)(4)N+ = tetramethylammonium cation] are reported. The structure of 1 consists of anionic oxalate-bridged copper(II) chains, tetramethylammoniun cations and crystallization water molecules. Each copper(II) ion in 1 is surrounded by three oxalate ligands, one being bidentate and the other two exhibiting bis-bidenate coordination modes. Although all the tris-chelated copper(H) units from a given chain exhibit the same helicity, adjacent chains have opposite helicities and then an achiral structure results. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 show the occurrence of a weak ferromagnetic interaction through the oxalate bridge [J = +1.14(1)cm(-1), the Hamiltonian being defined as H = -J Sigma nm S-i . S-j]. This value is analyzed and discussed in the light of available magnetostructural data for oxalate-bridged copper(H) complexes with the same out-of-plane exchange pathway. Complexes [Cu(2AcPh)Cl]center dot 2H(2)O (1), [Cu(2AcpClPh)Cl]center dot 2H(2)O (2), [Cu(2AcpNO(2)Ph)Cl] (3), [Cu(2BzPh)Cl] (4). [Cu(2BzpClPh)Cl] (5) and [Cu(2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl] (6) were obtained with 2-acetylpyridine-phenylhydrazone (H2AcPh), 2-acetylpyridine-para-chloro-phenylhydrazone (H2AcpClPh), 2-acetylpyridine-para-nitro-phenylhydrazone (H2AcpNO(2)Ph), 2-benzoylpyridine-phenylhydrazone (H2BzPh), 2-benzoylpyridine-para-chloro-phenylhydrazone (H2BzpClPh) and 2-benzoylpyridine-para-nitro-phenylhydrazone (H2BzpNO(2)Ph). The hydrazones showed poor antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa but demonstrated significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Upon coordination to copper(II) the antibacterial and antifungal activities appreciably increased. H2AcpClPh, H2BzpClPh and their copper(II) complexes (2) and (5), respectively, were as active as fluconazole against C. albicans. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper reports results for directed flow v(1) and elliptic flow v(2) of charged particles in Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 22.4 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are for the 0-60% most central collisions, using charged particles observed in the STAR detector. Our measurements extend to 22.4-GeV Cu + Cu collisions the prior observation that v1 is independent of the system size at 62.4 and 200 GeV and also extend the scaling of v(1) with eta/y(beam) to this system. The measured v(2)(p(T)) in Cu + Cu collisions is similar for root s(NN) throughout the range 22.4 to 200 GeV. We also report a comparison with results from transport model (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and multiphase transport model) calculations. The model results do not agree quantitatively with the measured v(1)(eta), v(2)(p(T)), and v(2)(eta).

The diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique has shown enormous potential for labile metal monitoring in fresh water due to the preconcentration, time-integrated, matrix interference removal and speciation analytical features. In this work, the coupling of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) with paper-based DGT devices was evaluated for the direct determination of Mn, Co. Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb in fresh water. The DGT samplers were assembled with cellulose (Whatman 3 MM chromatography paper) as the diffusion layer and a cellulose phosphate ion exchange membrane (Whatman P 81 paper) as the binding agent. The diffusion coefficients of the analytes on 3 MM chromatography paper were calculated by deploying the DGT samplers in synthetic solutions containing 500 mu g L-1 of Mn. Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb (4 L at pH 5.5 and ionic strength at 0.05 mol L-1). After retrieval, the DGT units were disassembled and the P81 papers were dried and analysed by EDXRF directly. The 3 MM chromatographic paper diffusion coefficients of the analytes ranged from 1.67 to 1.87 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). The metal retention and phosphate group homogeneities on the P81 membrane was studied by a spot analysis with a diameter of 1 mm. The proposed approach (DGT-EDXRF coupling) was applied to determine the analytes at five sampling sites (48 h in situ deployment) on the Piracicaba river basin, and the results (labile fraction) were compared with 0.45 mu m dissolved fractions determined by synchrotron radiation-excited total reflection X-ray fluorescence (SR-TXRF). The limits of detection of DGT-EDXRF coupling for the analytes (from 7.5 to 26 mu g L-1) were similar to those obtained by the sensitive SR-TXRF technique (3.8 to 9.1 mu g L-1). We have developed an efficient method for the synthesis of functionalized C-glycosyl 1,2,3-triazoles through a Cu(1)-promoted azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between a TMS-protected C-alkynyl-glycoside and organic azides. The reaction was accelerated by ultrasound irradiation and the addition of a base was not necessary to obtain the 1,2,3-triazole product. Moreover, further manipulation of the products led to chiral molecules with a C-glycoside linkage. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work describes the synthesis of a series of sialylmimetic neoglycoconjugates represented by 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole-sialic acid derivatives containing galactose modified at either C-1 or C-6 positions, glucose or gulose at C-3 position, and by the amino acid derivative 1,2,3-triazole fused threonine-3-O-galactose as potential TcTS inhibitors and anti-trypanosomal agents. This series was obtained by Cu(I)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction ('click chemistry') between the azido-functionalized sugars 1-N(3)-Gal (commercial), 6-N(3)-Gal, 3-N(3)-Glc and 3-N(3)-Gul with the corresponding alkyne-based 2-propynyl-sialic acid, as well as by click chemistry reaction between the amino acid N(3)-ThrOBn with 3-O-propynyl-GalOMe. The 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose and the sialic acid-galactopyranoside showed high Trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase (TcTS) inhibitory activity at 1.0 mM (approx. 90%), whilst only the former displayed relevant trypanocidal activity (IC(50) 260 mu M). These results highlight the 1,2,3-triazole linked sialic acid-6-O-galactose as a prototype for further design of new neoglycoconjugates against Chagas' disease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Heavy-flavor production in p + p collisions is a good test of perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. Modification of heavy-flavor production in heavy-ion collisions relative to binary-collision scaling from p + p results, quantified with the nuclear-modification factor (R-AA), provides information on both cold-and hot-nuclear-matter effects. Midrapidity heavy-flavor R-AA measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider have challenged parton-energy-loss models and resulted in upper limits on the viscosity-entropy ratio that are near the quantum lower bound. Such measurements have not been made in the forward-rapidity region. Purpose: Determine transverse-momentum (p(T)) spectra and the corresponding R-AA for muons from heavy-flavor meson decay in p + p and Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV and y = 1.65. Method: Results are obtained using the semileptonic decay of heavy-flavor mesons into negative muons. The PHENIX muon-arm spectrometers measure the p(T) spectra of inclusive muon candidates. Backgrounds, primarily due to light hadrons, are determined with a Monte Carlo calculation using a set of input hadron distributions tuned to match measured-hadron distributions in the same detector and statistically subtracted. Results: The charm-production cross section in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV, integrated over p(T) and in the rapidity range 1.4 < y < 1.9, is found to be d(sigma e (e) over bar)/dy = 0.139 +/- 0.029 (stat)(-0.058)(+0.051) (syst) mb. This result is consistent with a perturbative fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log calculation within scale uncertainties and is also consistent with expectations based on the corresponding midrapidity charm-production cross section measured by PHENIX. The R-AA for heavy-flavor muons in Cu + Cu collisions is measured in three centrality bins for 1 < p(T) < 4 GeV/c. Suppression relative to binary-collision scaling (R-AA < 1) increases with centrality. Conclusions: Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the measured charm yield in p + p collisions is consistent with state-of-the-art pQCD calculations. Suppression in central Cu + Cu collisions suggests the presence of significant cold-nuclear-matter effects and final-state energy loss.

The increasing contamination of aquatic environments motivates studies on the interactions among natural dissolved organic matter, metals, and the biota. This investigation focused on the organic exudates of the toxic cyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii as a Cu carrier through a three-level aquatic trophic chain (bacteria, protozoa, and copepod). The effects of bacteria activity and growth on the metal-organic complexes were evaluated through changes in free Cu2+ ions, total dissolved, and total particulate Cu. To be sure that the added copper would be complexed to the exudates, its complexing properties were previously determined. The cyanobacteria exudate-Cu complexes were furnished to bacteria that were further used as a food source to the protozoan Paramercium caudatum. This was then furnished as food to the copepod Mesocyclops sp. The results showed that, in general, the cyanobacterial exudates decreased Cu bioavailability and toxicity to the first trophic level (bacteria), but because the heterotrophic bacteria accumulated Cu, they were responsible for the transference for the otherwise low availability metal form. Both the bacteria and protozoan organisms accumulated Cu, but no metal accumulation was detected in the copepods.

The use of a low-cost benchtop time-domain NMR (TD-NMR) spectrometer to monitor copper electrodeposition in situ is presented. The measurements are based on the strong linear correlation between the concentration of paramagnetic ions and the transverse relaxation rates (R-2) of the solvent protons Two electrochemical NMR (EC-NMR) cells were constructed and applied to monitor the Cu2+ concentration during the electrodeposition reaction. The results show that TD-NMR relaxometry using the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill pulse sequence can be a very fast, simple, and efficient technique to monitor, in real time, the variation in the Cu2+ concentration during an electrodeposition reaction. This methodology can also be applied to monitor the electrodeposition of other paramagnetic ions, such as Ni2+ and Cr3+, which are commonly used in electroplating.

Cu(II)/neocuproine (2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) complexes were utilized for spectrophotometric determination of total polyphenol content in beers. This procedure is based on the reduction of Cu(II) by polyphenols in hydroethanolic medium (pH 7.0) in the presence of neocuproine, yielding Cu(I)/complexes with maximum absorption at 454 nm. The sensitivity of the proposed method was compared with the AOAC method using tannic and gallic acid as standards. The average apparent molar absorptivity, in L cm(-1) mol(-1), of tannic acid (3.50 +/- 0.20) x 10(5) and gallic acid (5.12 +/- 0.21) x 10(4), was twice as high for the proposed method. A lower limit of detection (LOD) (2.9 x 10(-1) mg L-1) was found when tannic acid was used in the proposed method. Additionally, less interference from the most common additives in beers was noticed. Total content of polyphenols was analyzed in 17 Brazilian samples. Results ranged from 35.5 to 556 mg L-1 of tannic acid, with higher values for recovery rates (45.4-118%, mean 85.0%) than for gallic acid. Although tannic acid is a mixture of polygalloyl glucoses, the total polyphenol content found in the samples suggests that tannic acid should be used as a standard. This is the first attempt to use this particular copper complex to quantify total polyphenol content in beer samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This work examines the effect of copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) on the photocurrent efficiency of silicon photovoltaic (Si PV) devices. An optimized synthesis of stable Cu NPs is reported together with a procedure for their immobilization on the Si PV surface. A comprehensive analysis of the photocurrent and power dependence of the Cu NPs surface coverage and size is presented. A decrease in photoconversion was observed for wavelengths shorter than similar to 500 nm, due to the Cu interband absorption. In the low surface coverage limit, where the level of aggregation was found to be low, the surface plasmon resonance absorption dominates leading to a modest effect on the photocurrent response. As the number of aggregates increased with the surface coverage, the photocurrent efficiency also increased, and a maximum enhancement power conversion of 16% was found for a 54 +/- 6 NPs per mu m(2) PV cell. This enhancement was attributed to SPR light scattering and trapping into the Si PV device. Higher surface coverage yielded numerous aggregates which acted as a bulk coating and caused a decrease in both photocurrent and power measurements.
