Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) were studied in neutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasmas in the TJ-II stellarator using a heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) in the core, and by Langmuir (LP) and Mirnov probes (MP) at the edge. AEs were detected over the whole plasma radius by the HIBP with a spatial resolution of about 1 cm. AE-induced oscillations were detected in the plasma density n(e), electric potential phi and poloidal magnetic field B-pol with frequencies 50 kHz < f(AE) < 300 kHz. The LP, MP and HIBP data showed a high level of coherency for specific branches of AEs. Poloidal mode wave-vectors k(theta), mode numbers m (m < 8) and propagation velocities V-theta similar to 30 km s(-1) were detected for various branches of AEs, having different radial locations. When the density rose due to NBI fuelling, the AE frequency decreased as predicted by the Alfven law f(AE) similar to n(e)(-1/2). During the AE frequency decay the following new AE features were observed: (i) the poloidal wave-vector k(theta) and mode number m remained constant, (ii) the cross-phases between the oscillations in B-pol, n(e) and electric potential remained constant, having an individual value for each AE branch, (iii) V-theta decreased proportional to the AE frequency. The interaction of the AEs with the bulk (thermal) plasma resulted in clearly pronounced quasi-coherent peaks in the electrostatic turbulent particle flux spectra. Various AE branches exhibited different contributions to the particle flux: outward, inward and also zero, depending on the phase relations between the oscillations in E-pol and n(e), which are specific for each branch. A comparison with MHD mode modelling indicated that some of the more prominent frequency branches can be identified as radially extended helical AEs.

Objective: To observe the behavior of the plotted vectors on the RXc (R - resistance - and Xc - reactance corrected for body height/length) graph through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIVA) and phase angle (PA) values in stable premature infants, considering the hypothesis that preterm infants present vector behavior on BIVA suggestive of less total body water and soft tissues, compared to reference data for term infants. Methods: Cross-sectional study, including preterm neonates of both genders, in-patients admitted to an intermediate care unit at a tertiary care hospital. Data on delivery, diet and bioelectrical impedance (800 mA, 50 kHz) were collected. The graphs and vector analysis were performed with the BIVA software. Results: A total of 108 preterm infants were studied, separated according to age (< 7 days and >= 7 days). Most of the premature babies were without the normal range (above the 95% tolerance intervals) existing in literature for term newborn infants and there was a tendency to dispersion of the points in the upper right quadrant, RXc plan. The PA was 4.92 degrees (+/- 2.18) for newborns < 7 days and 4.34 degrees (+/- 2.37) for newborns >= 7 days. Conclusion: Premature infants behave similarly in terms of BIVA and most of them have less absolute body water, presenting less fat free mass and fat mass in absolute values, compared to term newborn infants.

Almost fifty years after the discovery of the peroxyoxalate reaction by E. A. Chandross in the early nineteen sixties, this review article intends to give a general overview on mechanistic aspects of this system and to describe the principles of its analytical application. After a short general introduction on the principles of chemiluminescence and the history of peroxyoxalate discovery, mechanistic aspects of high-energy intermediate formation, its structure and its reaction with an activator in the peroxyoxalate system are discussed. Finally, analytical applications of peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence are exemplified using representative recent examples, including oxalic acid detection in biological samples.

This study evaluated the relationship between digestible lysine and metabolizable energy for barrow and gilts from 24 to 50 kg. Performance, digestibility and blood profile were studied. The experimental design was of randomized blocks, with five treatments, eight replicates and two animals per experimental unit in the performance assay and four replicates and one animal per experimental unit in the digestibility assay. The blood profile was chosen at 20 random animals of each sex, with four replicates per treatment and the animal as experimental unit. The treatments were 0.80, 0.90, 1.00, 1.10 and 1.20% digestible lysine. There was a linear effect of lysine levels on weight gain and feed conversion in females and crude protein in both sexes, gross energy excreted in the urine (kcal) and digestible energy (kcal). A quadratic effect of the amino acid studied in the daily consumption of crude protein (g) in both sexes, weight gain and feed conversion of barrows, as well as the nitrogen excreted in the urine (g) and nitrogen retained, and absorbed and retained. The relationship between neutrophils and lymphocytes had quadratic responses with increasing levels of lysine. The maximum performance for the studied genotype was obtained with 0.88 and 0.91% of digestible lysine or 2.60 and 2.67 g of digestible lysine/Mcal of metabolizable energy for females and barrows, respectively, corrected for digestibility trial.

The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. Solid dispersions (SDs) are an approach to increasing the water solubility and bioavailability of lipophilic drugs such as ursolic acid (UA), a triterpenoid with trypanocidal activity. In this work, Gelucire 50/13, a surfactant compound with permeability-enhancing properties, and silicon dioxide, a drying adjuvant, were employed to produce SDs with UA. SDs and physical mixtures (PMs) in different drug/carrier ratios were characterized and compared using differential scanning calorimetry, hot stage microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size, water solubility values, and dissolution profiles. Moreover, LLC-MK2 fibroblast cytotoxicity and trypanocidal activity evaluation were performed to determine the potential of SD as a strategy to improve UA efficacy against Chagas disease. The results demonstrated the conversion of UA from the crystalline to the amorphous state through XRD. FTIR experiments provided evidence of intermolecular interactions among the drug and carriers through carbonyl peak broadening in the SDs. These findings helped explain the enhancement of water solubility from 75.98 mu g/mL in PMs to 293.43 mu g/mL in SDs and the faster drug release into aqueous media compared with pure UA or PMs, which was maintained after 6 months at room temperature. Importantly, improved SD dissolution was accompanied by higher UA activity against trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, but not against mammalian fibroblasts, enhancing the potential of UA for Chagas disease treatment.

Objective: To assess safety and efficacy of sitaxsentan 50 and 100 mg in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Background: Sitaxsentan is a highly selective endothelin-A receptor antagonist that was recently withdrawn by the manufacturer because of a pattern of idiosyncratic liver injury. Methods: Before sitaxsentan withdrawal, this 18-week double-blind, placebo-controlled study randomized patients with PAH to receive placebo or sitaxsentan 50 or 100 mg once daily. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in 6-min walk distance (6MWD) at week 18. Changes in World Health Organization (WHO) functional class and time to clinical worsening (TTCW) were secondary endpoints. The primary efficacy analysis was powered for sitaxsentan 100 mg versus placebo. Results: Of 98 randomized patients, 61% were WHO functional class II at baseline. Improvement from baseline to week 18 in 6MWD occurred with sitaxsentan 100 but not 50 mg; a strong placebo effect was observed. At week 18, WHO functional class was improved or maintained in more patients receiving sitaxsentan 100 mg than placebo (P = 0.038); 0% versus 12% of patients deteriorated, respectively. TTCW was not significantly different for 100-mg sitaxsentan patients than placebo (P = 0.090). Adverse events (AEs) occurring more frequently with sitaxsentan (50 or 100 mg) included headache, peripheral edema, dizziness, nausea, extremity pain, and fatigue; most AEs were of mild or moderate severity. Conclusion: Sitaxsentan 100 mg improved functional class but not 6MWD in PAH patients who were mostly WHO functional class II at baseline. No patient receiving sitaxsentan 100 mg experienced clinical worsening; sitaxsentan was well tolerated. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the sulcus anatomy and possible correlations between sulcus diameter and white-to-white (WTW) diameter in pseudophakic eyes, data that may be important in the stability of add-on intraocular lenses (IOLs). SETTING: University Eye Hospital, Tuebingen, Germany. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: In pseudophakic eyes, the axial length (AL) and horizontal WTW were measured by the IOLMaster device. Cross-sectional images were obtained with a 50 MHz ultrasound biomicroscope on the 4 meridians: vertical, horizontal (180 degrees), temporal oblique, and nasal oblique. Sulcus-to-sulcus (STS), angle-to-angle (ATA), and sclera-to-sclera (ScTSc) diameters were measured. The IOL optic diameter (6.0 mm) served as a control. To test reliability, optic measurements were repeated 5 times in a subset of eyes. RESULTS: The vertical ATA and STS diameters were statistically significantly larger than the horizontal diameter (P=.0328 and P=.0216, respectively). There was no statistically significant difference in ScTSc diameters. A weak correlation was found between WTW and horizontal ATA (r = 0.5766, P<.0001) and between WTW and horizontal STS (r = 0.5040, P=.0002). No correlation was found between WTW and horizontal ScTSc (r = 0.2217, P=.1217). CONCLUSIONS: The sulcus anatomy had a vertical oval shape with the vertical meridian being the largest, but it also had variation in the direction of the largest meridian. The WTW measurements showed a weak correlation with STS. In pseudophakic eyes, Soemmerring ring or a bulky haptic may affect the ciliary sulcus anatomy.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a relação entre limiares audiométricos, autopercepção do handicap e tempo para procura de tratamento em indivíduos atendidos em um serviço público de saúde auditiva. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de estudo retrospectivo, com análise de prontuários de 152 idosos e 48 adultos deficientes auditivos. As médias de limiares audiométricos ISO (500 Hz a 4 kHz) e de altas frequências (2 a 6 kHz), os limiares de reconhecimento de fala e a pontuação total e das subescalas social e emocional dos Questionários de Handicap Auditivo para Adultos (HHIA) e Idosos (HHIE) foram comparados com o tempo compreendido entre o início da queixa auditiva e o momento da procura por tratamento. RESULTADOS: O tempo médio para procura do tratamento foi de 7,6 anos. Não houve diferença entre adultos e idosos para as médias dos limiares ISO e de alta frequência, pontuação total e das subescalas do HHIA/E, e tempo para procura do tratamento. Correlações negativas fracas, porém significativas, foram observadas entre os limiares audiométricos e o tempo para procura de tratamento. Não foram encontradas relações entre o tempo para procura de tratamento e as variáveis referentes à escolaridade, nível sócio econômico e percepção do handicap. CONCLUSÃO: Os limiares audiométricos parecem influenciar a procura pelo tratamento. A despeito dos avanços tecnológicos e mudanças no acesso à informação e ao tratamento, o tempo de procura pelo tratamento é similar ao encontrado há 30 anos.

OBJETIVO: Comparar o desempenho em processamento temporal de crianças com transtorno fonológico submetidos a treino auditivo formal e informal. MÉTODOS: Quinze indivíduos com transtorno fonológico (limiares tonais ≤20 dBNA de 0,50 a 4 kHz e idades entre 7 anos e 10 anos e 11 meses) foram avaliados e divididos em três grupos: Grupo Controle - composto por cinco indivíduos (média de idade de 9,1 anos) sem transtorno do processamento auditivo, que passaram por duas avaliações do processamento auditivo (central) com intervalo de seis a oito semanas, sem receber qualquer intervenção; Grupo Treino Formal - composto por cinco indivíduos (média de idade de 8,3 anos), com transtorno do processamento auditivo, submetidos a oito sessões de treino formal; e Grupo Treino Informal - composto por cinco indivíduos (média de idade de 8,1 anos) com transtorno do processamento auditivo, submetidos a oito sessões de treino informal. RESULTADOS: Após oito sessões, o grupo treino formal apresentou melhora de 8% e o grupo treino informal de 22,5% no que se refere ao teste padrão temporal de frequência. Para o teste padrão temporal de duração, o grupo treino formal melhorou 12,9% e o grupo treino informal 18,7%. No desempenho nos testes padrão de frequência e padrão de duração, não houve diferença estatística entre as médias obtidas pelos dois grupos após a intervenção. CONCLUSÃO: Embora os resultados não tenham apresentado significância estatística, o estudo piloto apresentado sugere que ambos os treinos, formal e informal, proporcionam melhora das habilidades de processamento temporal em crianças com transtorno fonológico e do processamento auditivo.

Introdução: Síndrome de Ablefaro MAcrostomia (AMS) é uma condição rara que compreende pálpebras ausentes ou curto, orelhas anormais, macrostomia, genitália anômalo, pele redundante e cabelos ausente. Brancati et al (2004) relataram uma ocorrência estimada de perda auditiva em 70% desta população. Estudos específicos sobre a audição em AMS não estavam presentes nos jornais que compilados. Relato dos casos: Paciente 1 é o primeiro filho de um ano de idade, a mãe 23 anos e pai de 25 anos de idade, não consangüíneos. Suas características clínicas são pouco cabelo no couro cabeludo, orelhas em forma de taça, raiz nasal larga, narinas antevertidas, macrostomia, os dedos com membranas, pele redundante e hipoplasia mamilos e lábios. Ela não tem atraso no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e a fala é normal. A audição foi avaliada aos 15 anos com uma perda auditiva em 6 kHz. Paciente 2 é o terceiro filho do mesmo casal. Ela tem falta grave das pálpebras, uma ponte nasal baixa com narinas hipoplásica e anteversão, macrostomia, orelhas anormalmente modelados, a ausência de mamilos, um de 6 cm onfalocele, ânus anteriormente localizado, hipoplasia dos grandes lábios, unhas hipoplasia, atenuação distal de falanges e pele redundante. Ela está se desenvolvendo com atraso no desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor, fala normal e perda auditiva condutiva leve bilateral. A avaliação audiológica incluiu quatro procedimentos: história clínica audiológica, inspeção otológica, imitanciometria, audiometria tonal e discurso. Conclusões: Os pacientes estudados com AMS apresentaram perda auditiva leve e esta perda de audição pode ser considerado como uma parte do fenótipo AMS sendo compatível os achados com a literatura.
