Strontium zirconate oxide was synthesized by co-precipitation and the citrate route and was evaluated as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production. The catalyst samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and TG, and catalytic activity was measured based on the ester content of the biodiesel produced that was quantified by GC. The co-precipitate samples were obtained in alkaline pH and had a mixture of the perovskite and pure strontium and zirconium oxide phases. Ester conversion using these samples was approximately 1.6%, indicating no catalytic activity. The citrate route was more efficient in producing perovskite when carried out at pH 7-8; excess SrCO3 was found on the catalyst surface due to CO2 adsorption, thus demonstrating no catalytic activity. The same synthesis carried out at pH 2 resulted in free OH- groups, with a small amount of the carbonate species that produced ester yield values of 98%. Therefore, matrices based on strontium zirconate produced via the citrate route in acidic media are potential heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Chrysin is one of the natural flavonoids present in plants, and large amounts are present in honey and propolis. In addition to anticancer, antioxidation, and anti-inflammatory activities, chrysin has also been reported to be an inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme converting testosterone into estrogen. The present study evaluated the mutagenicity of this flavonoid using micronucleus (MN) with HepG2 cells and Salmonella. Cell survival after exposure to different concentrations of chrysin was also determined using sulforhodamine B (SRB) colorimetric assay in HepG2 cells and the influence of this flavonoid on growth of cells in relation to the cell cycle and apoptosis. TheMN test showed that from 1 to 15 mu M of this flavonoid mutagenic activity was noted in HepG2 cells. The Salmonella assay demonstrated a positive response to the TA100 Salmonella strain in the presence or absence of S9, suggesting that this compound acted on DNA, inducing base pair substitution before or after metabolism via cytochrome P-450. The SRB assay illustrated that chrysin promoted growth inhibition of HepG2 cells in both periods studied (24 and 48 h). After 24 h of exposure it was noted that the most significant results were obtained with a concentration of 50 mu M, resulting in 83% inhibition and SubG0 percentage of 12%. After 48 h of incubation cell proliferation inhibition rates (97% at 50 mu M) were significantly higher. Our results showed that chrysin is a mutagenic and cytotoxic compound in cultured human HepG2 cells and Salmonella typhimurium. Although it is widely accepted that flavonoids are substances beneficial to health, one must evaluate the risk versus benefit relationship and concentrations of these substances to which an individual may be exposed.

A simple and fast method for the determination of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Se and Zn in bovine semen by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (q-ICP-MS) is described. Prior to analysis, samples (200 mu L) were diluted 1:50 in a solution containing 0.01% v/v Triton (R) X-100 and 0.5% v/v nitric acid and directly analyzed by ICP-MS. The limits of detection of the method are 0.3, 0.03, 0.2, 0.04, 0.04, 0.03 and 0.03 mu g L-1 for Ca-44, Cu-63, Fe-57, Mg-24, Zn-64, Se-82 and Mn-55, respectively. For purposes of comparison and method validation, four ordinary bovine semen samples were directly analyzed by ICP-MS and by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) or graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF AAS), with no statistical difference between the techniques at the 95% level when applying the t-test. Then, the proposed method was applied in the determinations of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Se and Zn in collected samples of bovine semen from different breeds, which are used in reproduction programs and artificial insemination.

Climate change can be associated with variations in the frequency and intensity of extreme temperatures and precipitation events on the local and regional scales. Along coastal areas, flooding associated with increased occupation has seriously impacted products and services generated by marine life, in particular the biotechnological potential that macroalgae hold. Therefore, this paper analyzes the available information on the taxonomy, ecology and physiology of macroalgae and discusses the impacts of climate change and local stress on the biotechnological potential of Brazilian macroalgae. Based on data compiled from a series of floristic and ecological works, we note the disappearance in some Brazilian regions of major groups of biotechnological interest. In some cases, the introduction of exotic species has been documented, as well as expansion of the distribution range of economically important species. We also verify an increase in the similarities between the Brazilian phycogeographic provinces, although they still remain different. It is possible that these changes have resulted from the warming of South Atlantic water, as observed for its surface in southeastern Brazilian, mainly during the winter. However, unplanned urbanization of coastal areas can also produce similar biodiversity losses, which requires efforts to generate long-term temporal data on the composition, community structure and physiology of macroalgae.
Serological, clinical and epidemiological evaluation of toxocariasis in urban areas of south Brazil.

Toxocariasis is a worldwide public-health problem that poses major risks to children who may accidentally ingest embryonated eggs of Toxocara. The objectives of this study were to investigate the occurrence of anti-Toxocara spp. antibodies in children and adolescents and the variables that may be involved, as well as environmental contamination by Toxocara spp. eggs, in urban recreation areas of north central mesoregion, Paraná State, Brazil. From June 2005 to March 2007. a total of 376 blood samples were collected by the Public Health Service from children and adolescents one to 12 years old, of both genders. Samples were analyzed by the indirect ELISA method for detection of anti-Toxocara antibodies. Serum samples were previously absorbed with Ascaris suum antigens, and considered positive with a reagent reactivity index ≥1. Soil samples from all of the public squares and schools located in the four evaluated municipalities that had sand surfaces (n = 19) or lawns (n = 15) were analyzed. Of the 376 serum samples, 194 (51.6%) were positive. The seroprevalence rate was substantially higher among children aging one to five years (p = 0.001) and six to eight years (p = 0.022). The clinical signs and symptoms investigated did not show a statistical difference between seropositive and seronegative individuals (p > 0.05). In 76.5% of the investigated recreation places, eggs of Toxocara were detected in at least one of the five collected samples. Recreation areas from public schools were 2.8 times more contaminated than from public squares. It is important to institute educational programs to inform families and educators, as well as to improve sanitary control of animals and cleaning of the areas intended for recreation in order to prevent toxocariasis.
