In this work, we introduce the class of quantum mechanics superpotentials W(x) = g epsilon(x)x(2n) and study in detail the cases n = 0 and 1. The n = 0 superpotential is shown to lead to the known problem of two supersymmetrically related Dirac delta potentials (well and barrier). The n = 1 case results in the potentials V+/-(x) = g(2)x(4) +/- 2g|x|. For V-, we present the exact ground-state solution and study the excited states by a variational technique. Starting from the ground state of V- and using logarithmic perturbation theory, we study the ground states of V+ and also of V(x) = g(2)x(4) and compare the result obtained in this new way with other results for this last potential in the literature.

This work reports the investigation on the structural differences between InAs quantum rings and their precursor quantum dots species as well as on the presence of piezoelectric fields and asymmetries in these nanostructures. The experimental results show significant reduction in the ring dimensions when the sizes of capped and uncapped ring and dot samples are compared. The iso-lattice parameter mapped by grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction has revealed the lateral extent of strained regions in the buried rings. A comparison between strain and composition of dot and ring structures allows inferring on how the ring formation and its final configuration may affect optical response parameters. Based on the experimental observations, a discussion has been introduced on the effective potential profile to emulate theoretically the ring-shape confinement. The effects of confinement and strain field modulation on electron and hole band structures are simulated by a multiband k.p calculation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Renyi and von Neumann entropies quantifying the amount of entanglement in ground states of critical spin chains are known to satisfy a universal law which is given by the conformal field theory (CFT) describing their scaling regime. This law can be generalized to excitations described by primary fields in CFT, as was done by Alcaraz et al in 2011 (see reference [1], of which this work is a completion). An alternative derivation is presented, together with numerical verifications of our results in different models belonging to the c = 1, 1/2 universality classes. Oscillations of the Renyi entropy in excited states are also discussed.

The photophysics of the 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system, after the absorption transition to the first singlet excited state, is theoretically studied for investigating the ultrafast multiplicity change to the triplet manifold. The consecutive transient absorption spectra experimentally observed in this molecular system are also studied. To identify the electronic states involved in the nonradiative decay, the minimum energy path of the first singlet excited state is obtained using the complete active space self-consistent field//configurational second-order perturbation approach. A near degeneracy region was found between the first singlet and the second triplet excited states with large spin-orbit coupling between them. The intersystem crossing rate was also evaluated. To support the proposed deactivation model the transient absorption spectra observed in the experiments were also considered. For this, computer simulations using sequential quantum mechanic-molecular mechanic methodology was used to consider the solvent effect in the ground and excited states for proper comparison with the experimental results. The absorption transitions from the second triplet excited state in the relaxed geometry permit to describe the transient absorption band experimentally observed around 200 fs after the absorption transition. This indicates that the T-2 electronic state is populated through the intersystem crossing presented here. The two transient absorption bands experimentally observed between 2 and 45 ps after the absorption transition are described here as the T-1 -> T-3 and T-1 -> T-5 transitions, supporting that the intermediate triplet state (T-2) decays by internal conversion to T-1. Optical properties of intentionally disordered multiple quantum well (QW) system embedded in a wide AlGaAs parabolic well were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) measurements as functions of the laser excitation power and the temperature. The characterization of the carriers localized in the individual wells was allowed due to the artificial disorder that caused spectral separation of the photoluminescence lines emitted by different wells. We observed that the photoluminescence peak intensity from each quantum well shifted to high energy as the excitation power was increased. This blue-shift is associated with the filling of localized states in the valence band tail. We also found that the dependence of the peak intensity on the temperature is very sensitive to the excitation power. The temperature dependence of the photoluminescence peak energy from each QW was well fitted using a model that takes into account the thermal redistribution of the localized carriers. Our results demonstrate that the band tails in the studied structures are caused by alloy potential fluctuations and the band tail states dominate the emission from the peripheral wells. We estimate the masses of the 1(--) heavy four-quark and molecule states by combining exponential Laplace (LSR) and finite energy (FESR) sum rules known perturbatively to lowest order (LO) in alpha(s) but including non-perturbative terms up to the complete dimension-six condensate contributions. This approach allows to fix more precisely the value of the QCD continuum threshold (often taken ad hoc) at which the optimal result is extracted. We use double ratio of sum rules (DRSR) for determining the SU(3) breakings terms. We also study the effects of the heavy quark mass definitions on these LO results. The SU(3) mass-splittings of about (50-110) MeV and the ones of about (250-300) MeV between the lowest ground states and their 1st radial excitations are (almost) heavy-flavor independent. The mass predictions summarized in Table 4 are compared with the ones in the literature (when available) and with the three Y-c(4260, 4360, 4660) and Y-b(10890) 1(--) experimental candidates. We conclude (to this order approximation) that the lowest observed state cannot be a pure 1(--) four-quark nor a pure molecule but may result from their mixings. We extend the above analyzes to the 0(++) four-quark and molecule states which are about (0.5-1) GeV heavier than the corresponding 1(--) states, while the splittings between the 0(++) lowest ground state and the 1st radial excitation is about (300-500) MeV. We complete the analysis by estimating the decay constants of the 1(--) and 0(++) four-quark states which are tiny and which exhibit a 1/M-Q behavior. Our predictions can be further tested using some alternative non-perturbative approaches or/and at LHCb and some other hadron factories. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The low-temperature states of bosonic fluids exhibit fundamental quantum effects at the macroscopic scale: the best-known examples are Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity, which have been tested experimentally in a variety of different systems. When bosons interact, disorder can destroy condensation, leading to a 'Bose glass'. This phase has been very elusive in experiments owing to the absence of any broken symmetry and to the simultaneous absence of a finite energy gap in the spectrum. Here we report the observation of a Bose glass of field-induced magnetic quasiparticles in a doped quantum magnet (bromine-doped dichloro-tetrakis-thiourea-nickel, DTN). The physics of DTN in a magnetic field is equivalent to that of a lattice gas of bosons in the grand canonical ensemble; bromine doping introduces disorder into the hopping and interaction strength of the bosons, leading to their localization into a Bose glass down to zero field, where it becomes an incompressible Mott glass. The transition from the Bose glass (corresponding to a gapless spin liquid) to the Bose-Einstein condensate (corresponding to a magnetically ordered phase) is marked by a universal exponent that governs the scaling of the critical temperature with the applied field, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Our study represents a quantitative experimental account of the universal features of disordered bosons in the grand canonical ensemble.

Measurement-based quantum computation is an efficient model to perform universal computation. Nevertheless, theoretical questions have been raised, mainly with respect to realistic noise conditions. In order to shed some light on this issue, we evaluate the exact dynamics of some single-qubit-gate fidelities using the measurement-based quantum computation scheme when the qubits which are used as a resource interact with a common dephasing environment. We report a necessary condition for the fidelity dynamics of a general pure N-qubit state, interacting with this type of error channel, to present an oscillatory behavior, and we show that for the initial canonical cluster state, the fidelity oscillates as a function of time. This state fidelity oscillatory behavior brings significant variations to the values of the computational results of a generic gate acting on that state depending on the instants we choose to apply our set of projective measurements. As we shall see, considering some specific gates that are frequently found in the literature, the fast application of the set of projective measurements does not necessarily imply high gate fidelity, and likewise the slow application thereof does not necessarily imply low gate fidelity. Our condition for the occurrence of the fidelity oscillatory behavior shows that the oscillation presented by the cluster state is due exclusively to its initial geometry. Other states that can be used as resources for measurement-based quantum computation can present the same initial geometrical condition. Therefore, it is very important for the present scheme to know when the fidelity of a particular resource state will oscillate in time and, if this is the case, what are the best times to perform the measurements.

Working with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in quadrupolar spin systems, in this paper we transfer the concept of atomic coherent state to the nuclear spin context, where it is referred to as pseudonuclear spin coherent state (pseudo-NSCS). Experimentally, we discuss the initialization of the pseudo- NSCSs and also their quantum control, implemented by polar and azimuthal rotations. Theoretically, we compute the geometric phases acquired by an initial pseudo-NSCS on undergoing three distinct cyclic evolutions: (i) the free evolution of the NMR quadrupolar system and, by analogy with the evolution of the NMR quadrupolar system, that of (ii) single-mode and (iii) two-mode Bose-Einstein Condensate like system. By means of these analogies, we derive, through spin angular momentum operators, results equivalent to those presented in the literature for orbital angular momentum operators. The pseudo-NSCS description is a starting point to introduce the spin squeezed state and quantum metrology into nuclear spin systems of liquid crystal or solid matter.

We consider the Shannon mutual information of subsystems of critical quantum chains in their ground states. Our results indicate a universal leading behavior for large subsystem sizes. Moreover, as happens with the entanglement entropy, its finite-size behavior yields the conformal anomaly c of the underlying conformal field theory governing the long-distance physics of the quantum chain. We study analytically a chain of coupled harmonic oscillators and numerically the Q-state Potts models (Q = 2, 3, and 4), the XXZ quantum chain, and the spin-1 Fateev-Zamolodchikov model. The Shannon mutual information is a quantity easily computed, and our results indicate that for relatively small lattice sizes, its finite-size behavior already detects the universality class of quantum critical behavior.
