En este último cuarto de siglo XX lo que fue apenas necesario solo hace diez años, hoy es imperioso, tratándose de la recuperación de la información. La inmensa masa de información que hoy circula en el mundo, rompe toda posibilidad humana, individual o colectiva de abarcarla, de almacenarla y lo más importante, de darla a conocer.La forma tradicional de buscar materiales para sacar información va quedando atrás, corta ante un cúmulo tan grande de bibliografía, general o especializada que hoy se publica.Las bibliotecas que no utilizan técnicas modernas para entresacar, de toda esta información la que le conviene al lector, y siguen manejando documentos con la lentitud con que se manejaron hace un siglo, están limitado el servicio, que deben ser dinámico y acorde con los tiempos que se viven, a un servicio que ya no cumple con las necesidades para las cuales fue creado.

Comunidad es un conjunto de personas que conviven en determinado lugar geográfico y con una serie de características comunes entre sí.En ella juega un papel muy decisivo la Biblioteca Escolar ya que esta depende las posibles y futuras influencias que se den relacionados con los aspectos económicos, sociales, políticos, culturales y psicológicos proyectados al bienestar comunal.En el caso del país de Nicaragua todos y cada uno de los que habrán de ejercer funciones bibliotecarias, son conscientes del rol que desempeñaran. Si en un tiempo, su verdadera misión, no fue posible realizarla o llevarla a cabo ya que no convenía a los intereses de la clase explotadora y que más bien le era mejor mantenerla sumergida en un letargo, ahora, con el cambio realizado, con las puertas que antes se mantenían cerradas y que ahora que abren de par en par; mostrándonos los verdaderos objetivos que ella persigue, sus finalidades, así como para brindar los reconocimientos antes prohibidos, viene a ser para todos aquellos consecuentes con el proceso revolucionario en que se vive, como un punto estratégico en la nueva educación.

This time, we include the contributions of several authors, both domestic and international, who contribute their ideas and approaches to further study of topics of great interest and importance in the daily work of the library profession.The Information Society, a term first used in the seventies and regain strength in the nineties, points to a new conception of society, where any person, company or group can access and share all kinds of information, no matter where or how.This can be achieved thanks to the emergence of new technologies and advanced information and communication technologies (ICT) that enable search, storage, processing, safeguarding and dissemination of information to any person who needs .

The document begins by describing the problem of budget information units and the high cost of commercial software that specializes in library automation. Describes the origins of free software and its meaning. Mentioned the three levels of automation in library: catalog automation, generation of repositories and full automation. Mentioned the various free software applications for each of the levels and offers a number of advantages and disadvantages in the use of these products. Concludes that the automation project is hard but full of satisfaction, emphasizing that there is no cost-free project, because if it is true that free software is free, there are other costs related to implementation, training and commissioning project progress.

This article presents a literature review on current issues in the field of library science, related to competence in the management and use of information, information technology and communication, information society and knowledge among others. It further seeks to highlight the importance of users to acquire these skills so they can deal effectively with decision-making, problem solving, conducting investigations and their own training. This is possible if the information and documentation systems as dynamic agents engaged to distribute scientific and technical knowledge.

This document describes the experience of academic cooperation between professionals in the field of library science, both from West Chester University (WCU), and the National University (UNA) of Costa Rica. The event took place at West Chester University during the week May 4th to May 8th, 2009. The objectives of this revolved around the exchange of ideas and interests in the academic and cultural relations between the two universities. In addition, it unveiled several services and procedures in the handling of information and highlighted the importance of promoting the exchange of students from both institutions. Finally, this article highlights the schedule of activities to integrate international and intercultural perspective in various areas related to the teaching-learning process, the contribution of university libraries on student success and techniques of information dissemination.

This section presents information on the delivery ceremony of the official certificate of reaccreditation, by the SINAES, to the career of Diploma, Bachelor (with the following two emphases: Information Management, Information Technology and Communication) and Bachelor of Library and Documentation, held last March 3, 2011. It includes some of the speeches delivered that night, and several photographs illustrating such an important event for both the School of Library and to the university community.

Since classical antiquity, the public library has been the institution that helps people to know their history and face the changes that society increasingly demands. Similarly, school libraries are piloting the learning of children; in them, manage to have their first contact with books, his first great travel stories with dinosaurs, robots, fiction, among others through the stories, legends and knowledge games. School libraries contribute to strengthening reading habits from the earliest years of life.In conducting the research, developed an assessment of the current situation of the two libraries under study, based on the following variables: services, human resources, budget, infrastructure, children's collection, furniture, electronic equipment and audiovisual, recreational interests, needs of information, socio-cultural characteristics and availability. This was achieved through the collection of information externada by children of preschool and junior, mothers or guardians and teachers of the Education Unit of Four Queens and in charge of the School Library Education Unit Four Queens (BEUPCR) and J. Francisco Public Library Orlich (BPFJO).According to the diagnosis and analysis of information, it is shown that the aspects related to personnel, electronic equipment and resources are limited, in addition, there were deficiencies in infrastructure BEUPCR.

As international contribution, we have an excellent essay by fellow Mexican Guillermo Hector Alfaro, who proposes an interesting analysis of the relationship between history and library science and urges us to take up the study of the past of our discipline in order to establish it in a field of knowledge thoroughly scientific.These articles examine both the purely practical and those that require theoretical analysis for the growth and development of our subject area. Finally, we urge all the library community to participate and return to the Library Journal, your contributions, in particular, articles, essays and technical reports.

The Library of the Institute of Alajuela made an induction experience and training of users and ventured into the information literacy and engaged in the work of the teaching-learning as an integral part of the curriculum. The actions of the library in developing search strategies, location, selection and use of information brought inthe health service, changes to the role of the library, the librarian, the book and the information in the educational environment.By sharing this experience is intended to provide information that can motivate staff of educational institutions that wish toenter the field of information literacy as a strategy to support the development oflifelong independent learning skills and meaningful learning. Currently, the library should be a proactive part in the education of students but also teachers, administrative and family.This will result in a benefit to Costa Rica: the development of youth and their proper integration into the workplace.

This article marks the decline of the historical study of the Library meet the increase in studies on technology-driven globalization and the predominance of technicality in the discipline, but it is essential to return to that historical knowledge if the Library want instituted as a fully scientific field of knowledge. Emphasized in the beginning of the Library from orality to the written record preserved by the archives and libraries and its close relation to the development of the science of history. It also establishes the link between documents librarians and historians to understand the past and present society.

Education is the basis for economic and social development, but there are great inequalities in education and access to documentary resources, audiovisual and technology, a situation that affects school performance. The Organization of the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) found a correlation between levels of inequality in a country and performance: the greater the inequality, the worse the performance. Investment in education affects human development and benefit is obtained for the individual and society, which is necessary to ensure social equity, so that there is quality education for all. One of the fundamental purposes of the educational process is to train Costa Rican human thinking, analytical and critical of their environment. The purpose of that is acquired through various methods of academic achievement, learning, participation and constant communication of knowledge between the administrative staff, faculty and students. It is appropriate for schools and colleges have a school library or Resource Center for Learning, it is the gathering, analysis and work of the educational community, working with the intellectual growth of students, faculty, staff and community through access to different services and learning resources provided by the library or CRA.

The article introduces the concept of E-Science and its importance in the generation of knowledge. This article also stresses the need to transfer that knowledge, before this, the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Costa Rica could gothrough such means as the online magazine E-Ciencias de la Información.It explains why we chose the form of electronic publication and describes the development strategy, architecture design and technological requirements. The article concludes that electronic publications have penetrated hard in the academic world and are increasingly cited, so that their contribution as vehicles for dissemination of knowledge is undeniable.

This study examines the services provided by the bookmobile of SINABI-Public Libraries in rural communities visited Costa Rica during 2009 and 2010 according to the sample selected for the presentation of a proposed Mobile Library Network to Costa Rica.Each country has very heterogeneous populations and the populations in unfavorable geographical areas (rural or urban fringe areas) and areas without library service or cultural institution, they have specific information needs. By its terms can not exercise the right to information, while urban areas have greater influence and social advantage to have easy access to various information resources.The mobile library services are presented as an ideal tool to deliver library services to any population, mainly those remote communities and vulnerable state as rural areas. Bookmobile is defined as any means of transport (buses, trains, boats, motorcycles, boats, animals, etc.), which shifts documentary material.

Al ser la biblioteca pública de acceso libre y gratuito, se constituye como uno de los medios de información y conocimiento que ofrece oportunidades a todos los miembros de la comunidad y desde donde se pueden hacer efectivos los derechos a la información, la educación, la cultura y la recreación.De acuerdo con la UNESCO, es responsabilidad de la bibliotecapública facilitar el acceso al conocimiento y a la información a través de Internet, y con ello lograr su desarrollo y evolución tecnológica.Actualmente, la biblioteca pública costarricense esta incursionando paulatinamente en el mundo de las TIC y está tratando de integrarse en la revolución digital para ofrecer servicios novedosos, de calidad y seguir siendo útiles para los ciudadanos (as), y a la vez, está procurando acortar la brecha digital de quienes tienen menos oportunidades.
