Employee engagement is linked to higher productivity, lower attrition, and improved organizational reputations resulting in increased focus and resourcing by managers to foster an engaged workforce. While drivers of employee engagement have been identified as perceived support, job characteristics, and value congruence, internal communication is theoretically suggested to be a key influence in both the process and maintenance of employee engagement efforts. However, understanding the mechanisms by which internal communication influences employee engagement has emerged as a key question in the literature. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether social factors, namely perceived support and identification, play a mediating role in the relationship between internal communication and engagement. To test the theoretical model, data are collected from 200 non-executive employees using an online self-administered survey. The study applies linear and mediated regression to the model and finds that organizations and supervisors should focus internal communication efforts toward building greater perceptions of support and stronger identification among employees in order to foster optimal levels of engagement.

Thunderstorm downbursts are important for wind engineers as they have been shown to produce the design wind speeds for mid to high return periods in many regions of Australia [1]. In structural design codes (e.g. AS/NZS1170.02-02) an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is assumed, and a vertical profile is interpolated from recorded 10 m wind speeds. The ABL assumption is however inaccurate when considering the complex structure of a thunderstorm outflow, and its effects on engineered structures. Several researchers have shown that the downburst, close to its point of divergence is better represented by an impinging wall jet profile than the traditional ABL. Physical modelling is the generally accepted approach to estimate wind loads on structures and it is therefore important to physically model the thunderstorm downburst so that its effects on engineered structures may be studied. An advancement on the simple impinging jet theory, addressed here is the addition of a pulsing mechanism to the jet which allows not only the divergent characteristics of a downburst to be produced, but also it allows the associated leading ring vortex to be developed. The ring vortex modelling is considered very important for structural design as it is within the horizontal vortex that the largest velocities occur [2]. This paper discusses the flow field produced by a pulsed wall jet, and also discusses the induced pressures that this type of flow has on a scaled tall building.

Steady and pulsed flow stationary impinging jets have been employed to simulate the wind field produced by a thunderstorm microburst. The effect on the low level wind field due to jet inclination with respect to the impingement surface has been studied. A single point velocity time history has been compared to the full-scale Andrews AFB microburst for model validation. It was found that for steady flow, jet inclination increased the radial extent of high winds but did not increase the magnitude of these winds when compared to the perpendicular impingement case. It was found that for inclined pulsed flow the design wind conditions could increase compared to perpendicular impingement. It was found that the location of peak winds was affected by varying the outlet conditions.

Three particular geometrical shapes of foods were prepared from food materials. Cuboidal (aspect ratio = 1:1, 2:1, 3:1) , cylindrical (length: dameter = 1:1, 2:1, 3:1) and spheres were selected from potato, beans and peas respectively. Internal porosity was determined from solid density (theoretical)and particle density (experimental) during fluidised bed drying at different moisture contents. Solid density was calculated using formulae (conservation of mass and volume) already published in the literature by previous researchers. Determined porosity values were correlated with moisture ratio for different geometrical shapes.

The results of comprehensive experimental studies of the operation, stability, and plasma parameters of the low-frequency (0.46 MHz) inductively coupled plasmas sustained by the internal oscillating rf current are reported. The rf plasma is generated by using a custom-designed configuration of the internal rf coil that comprises two perpendicular sets of eight currents in each direction. Various diagnostic tools, such as magnetic probes, optical emission spectroscopy, and an rf-compensated Langmuir probe were used to investigate the electromagnetic, optical, and global properties of the argon plasma in wide ranges of the applied rf power and gas feedstock pressure. It is found that the uniformity of the electromagnetic field inside the plasma reactor is improved as compared to the conventional sources of inductively coupled plasmas with the external flat coil configuration. A reasonable agreement between the experimental data and computed electromagnetic field topography inside the chamber is reported. The Langmuir probe measurements reveal that the spatial profiles of the electron density, the effective electron temperature, plasma potential, and electron energy distribution/probability functions feature a high degree of the radial and axial uniformity and a weak azimuthal dependence, which is consistent with the earlier theoretical predictions. As the input rf power increases, the azimuthal dependence of the global plasma parameters vanishes. The obtained results demonstrate that by introducing the internal oscillated rf currents one can noticeably improve the uniformity of electromagnetic field topography, rf power deposition, and the plasma density in the reactor.

A global electromagnetic model of an inductively coupled plasma sustained by an internal oscillating current sheet in a cylindrical metal vessel is developed. The electromagnetic field structure, profiles of the rf power transferred to the plasma electrons, electron/ion number density, and working points of the discharge are studied, by invoking particle and power balance. It is revealed that the internal rf current with spatially invariable phase significantly improves the radial uniformity of the electromagnetic fields and the power density in the chamber as compared with conventional plasma sources with external flat spiral inductive coils. This configuration offers the possibility of controlling the rf power deposition in the azimuthal direction.

The effects of an inductively rotating current were observed on low-frequency inductively coupled plasmas. The spatial distribution of electromagnetic fields was investigated in a cylindrical metallic chamber filled with dense plasma. The distribution of the magnetic field in plasma chamber was observed for rarefied and dense plasmas. The plasma was assumed as uniform in the electromagnetic fields. The results showed the plasma density increased with power and the electron density increased with pressure.

A new source of low-frequency (0.46 MHz) inductively coupled plasmas sustained by the internal planar "unidirectional" RF current driven through a specially designed internal antenna configuration has been developed. The experimental results of the investigation of the optical and global argon plasma parameters by the optical and Langmuir probes are presented. It is shown that the spatial profiles of the electron density, the effective electron temperature and plasma potential feature a great deal of the radial and axial uniformity compared with conventional sources of inductively coupled plasmas with external at coil configurations. The measurements also reveal a weak azimuthal dependence of the global plasma parameters at low values of the input RF power, which was earlier predicted theoretically. The azimuthal dependence of the global plasma parameters vanishes at high input RF powers. Moreover, under certain conditions, the plasma becomes unstable due to spontaneous transitions between low-density (electrostatic, E) and high-density (electromagnetic, H) operating modes. Excellent uniformity of high-density plasmas makes the plasma reactor promising for various plasma processing applications and surface engineering.

Transitions between the two discharge modes in a low-frequency (∼460 kHz) inductively coupled plasma sustained by an internal oscillating radio frequency (rf) current sheet are studied. The unidirectional rf current sheet is generated by an internal antenna comprising two orthogonal sets of synphased rf currents driven in alternately reconnected copper litz wires. It is shown that in the low-to-intermediate pressure range the plasma source can be operated in the electrostatic (E) and electromagnetic (H) discharge modes. The brightness of the E -mode argon plasma glow is found remarkably higher than in inductively coupled plasmas with external flat spiral "pancake" coils. The cyclic variations of the input rf power result in pronounced hysteretic variations of the optical emission intensity and main circuit parameters of the plasma source. Under certain conditions, it appears possible to achieve a spontaneous E→H transition ("self-transition"). The observed phenomenon can be attributed to the thermal drift of the plasma parameters due to the overheating of the working gas. The discharge destabilizing factors due to the gas heating and step-wise ionization are also discussed. © 2005 American Vacuum Society.

Radial and axial distributions of magnetic fields in a low-frequency (∼460 kHz)inductively coupled plasmasource with two internal crossed planar rf current sheets are reported. The internal antenna configuration comprises two orthogonal sets of eight alternately reconnected parallel and equidistant copper litz wires in quartz enclosures and generates three magnetic (H z, H r, and H φ) and two electric (E φ and E r) field components at the fundamental frequency. The measurements have been performed in rarefied and dense plasmas generated in the electrostatic(E) and electromagnetic (H)discharge modes using two miniature magnetic probes. It is shown that the radial uniformity and depth of the rf power deposition can be improved as compared with conventional sources of inductively coupled plasmas with external flat spiral (“pancake”) antennas. Relatively deeper rf power deposition in the plasma source results in more uniform profiles of the optical emission intensity, which indicates on the improvement of the plasma uniformity over large chamber volumes. The results of the numerical modeling of the radial magnetic field profiles are found in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

A better understanding of the behaviour of prepared cane and bagasse, and the ability to model the mechanical behaviour of bagasse as it is squeezed in a milling unit to extract juice, would help identify how to improve the current process. There are opportunities to decrease bagasse moisture from a milling unit. The behaviour of bagasse in chutes is poorly understood. Previous investigations have shown that juice flow through bagasse obeys Darcy’s permeability law, that the grip of the rough surface of the grooves on the bagasse can be represented by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for soils, and that the internal mechanical behaviour of the bagasse is critical state behaviour similar to that for sand and clay. Progress has been made in the last 11 years towards implementing a mechanical model for bagasse in finite element software. The objective is to be able to correctly simulate various simple mechanical loading conditions measured in the laboratory. Combining these behaviours together is thought to have a high probability of reproducing the complicated stress conditions in a milling unit. This paper reports on progress made towards modelling the fifth and final (and most challenging) of the simple loading conditions: the shearing of heavily over-consolidated bagasse, using a specific model for bagasse in a multi-element simulation.

For example, there are opportunities to decrease bagasse moisture from a milling unit. Also, the behaviour of bagasse in chutes is poorly understood. A better understanding of the behaviour of prepared cane and bagasse, and the ability to model the mechanical behaviour of bagasse as it is squeezed in a milling unit to extract juice, would help identify how to improve the current process, for example to reduce final bagasse moisture. Previous investigations have proven that juice flow through bagasse obeys Darcy’s permeability law, that the grip of the rough surface of the grooves on the bagasse can be represented by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for soils, and that the internal mechanical behaviour of the bagasse is critical state behaviour similar to that for sand and clay. Current Finite Element Models (FEM) available in commercial software have adequate permeability models. However, no commercially available software seems to contain an adequate mechanical model for bagasse. The same software contains a few material models for soil and other materials, while the coding of hundreds of developed models for soil and other materials remains confidential at universities and government research centres. Progress has been made in the last ten years towards implementing a mechanical model for bagasse in finite element software code. This paper builds on that progress and carries out a further step towards obtaining an adequate material model. The fifth and final loading condition outlined previously, shearing of heavily over-consolidated bagasse, is outlined.

In this work we test the feasibility of a new calibration method for gel dosimetry. We examine, through Monte Carlo modelling, whether the inclusion of an organic plastic scintillator system at key points within the gel phantom would perturb the dose map. Such a system would remove the requirement for a separate calibration gel, removing many sources of uncertainty.

This project examined the differences in healing of metaphyseal bone, when the implants of variable stiffness are used for fracture fixation. This knowledge is important in development of novel orthopaedic implants, used in orthopaedic surgery to stabilise the fractures. Dr Koval used a mouse model to create a fracture, and then assessed its healing with a combination of mechanical testing, microcomputed tomography and histomorphometric examination.
