Why is there no genetics in phylogenetics : misconceptions, clarification and solutions

Fundamental misconceptions regarding some basic phylogenetic terminology are presented in this opinion piece. An attempt is made to point out why these misconceptions exist and what may be causing the misapplication of terminology. Clarification is providing via basic definitions and simple explanations. Differences between the scientific fields of genetics and population genetics are discussed. The appropriate use of terminology is advocated and alternative terms are proposed to eliminate one potential source of confusion. It is suggested we use 'sequence data' instead of molecular data and 'non-sequence data' instead of morphological data in the field of phylogenetics and systematics.

The vanishing endpoint of settler colonialism

In this paper, we interrogate the way that narratives about the unfolding of settler colonialism through time are encoded in recent Australian Indigenous policy frameworks. We argue that the postcolonial image of a single transformative moment of radical political break is embedded in Australian policy frameworks, but is deployed in ways that fuse this idea with the moment of colonial completion and in so doing assist the colonial project. By merging the moment of decolonisation and the moment of colonial completion, temporal narratives mobilise conservative and progressive settler voices towards colonial goals. We identify three recent policy approaches: reconciliation, neoliberal contractualism and intervention, and interrogate the narratives of the present and future that they reflect and deploy. We argue these unacknowledged stories of the colonial future must be contested, so that debates about how settler and Indigenous people might live together differently across time are not foreclosed.

Women in prison : where are we going?

Female imprisonment rates have dramatically increased over the last two decades at state, national and international levels. This paper reviews women's imprisonment in Australia and looks at sentence management and programs, highlighting the critical issues which impact daily on female inmates.

Donating blood and organs : using an extended theory of planned behavior perspective to identify similarities and differences in individual motivations to donate

Due to the critical shortage and continued need of blood and organ donations (ODs), research exploring similarities and differences in the motivational determinants of these behaviors is needed. In a sample of 258 university students, we used a cross-sectional design to test the utility of an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) including moral norm, self-identity and in-group altruism (family/close friends and ethnic group), to predict people’s blood and OD intentions. Overall, the extended TPB explained 77.0% and 74.6% of variance in blood and OD intentions, respectively. In regression analyses, common contributors to intentions across donation contexts were attitude, self-efficacy and self-identity. Normative influences varied with subjective norm as a significant predictor related to OD intentions but not blood donation intentions at the final step of regression analyses. Moral norm did not contribute significantly to blood or OD intentions. In-group altruism (family/close friends) was significantly related to OD intentions only in regressions. Future donation strategies should increase confidence to donate, foster a perception of self as the type of person who donates blood and/or organs, and address preferences to donate organs to in-group members only.

Teachers as researchers : a ‘fair dinkum’ learning legacy

As we encounter a policy landscape where increasingly the education lexicon includes keywords such as data, evidence, quality, standards, it is interesting to revisit Garth Boomer's contribution regarding teachers as researchers. As an early-career classroom teacher in the mid-1970s, I was inspired by Boomer's provocation to engage with research as a practitioner seeking evidence of learning (or not learning). Since that time, convinced of the power of teacher research in enhancing both student and teacher learning, I have devoted a good deal of my academic life to finding ways of supporting teachers to engage in research - from finding funds to facilitate teacher-researcher networks, through designing research projects with teacher-researchers as key collaborators, to embedding practitioner inquiry in university courses wherever possible pre- and in-service.

Treaty talk : past, present and future -- [Edited version of the inaugural Ngunnawal Lecture at the University of Canberra]

WELL I HEARD it on the radio and I saw it on the television. John Howard said there would be no talk of a treaty between his government and Indigenous people. He is not the first government leader to hold such views. Let me consider some of the public and official conversations that the concept of a treaty has invoked and what they reveal about white sovereignty. My interest in such dialogues stems from the fact that the idea of a treaty between white Australia and Indigenous people is not new and in the year of the centenary of Federation the Australian nation is still having trouble discussing it. Australian culture is less white than it used to be, but Anglicised whiteness forms the centre where white men established and defend institutions encouraging a possessive investment in white sovereignty. Care and preventative maintenance of surgical instrumentation : the scrub nurse's responsibility

The cost of surgical instrumentation is a major investment for any operating theatre. Repair or premature replacement of instruments is an additional financial burden. Although instrument care, handling, cleaning and sterilisation are usually components of orientation programs for instrument processing personnel, it should also be included in the scrub nurse orientation program. A thorough knowledge of the historical development of instruments; instrument classification and purpose; and careful use and handling will equip the scrub nurse in fulfilling a vital role in preventative maintenance of surgical instrumentation

Latex allergy : a perioperative environmental hazard

Latex allergy is a serious, possibly life threatening health hazard in the perioperative environment. Policy and procedures should be developed to identify patients who may be sensitive to latex and to ensure the avoidance of latex products in their care. Healthcare workers should also take steps to avoid exposure and protect themselves from hypersensitivity reactions.

Pathway to sustainability : the Lady Elliot Island hybrid solar power station

The Lady Elliot Island eco-resort, on the Great Barrier Reef, operates with a strong sustainability ethic, and has broken away from its reliance on diesel generators, an initiative which has ongoing and substantial economic benefit. The first step was an energy audit that led to a 35% reduction in energy usage, to an average of 575 kWh per day. The eco-resort then commissioned a hybrid solar power station, in 2008, with energy storage in battery banks. Solar power is currently (2013) providing about 160 kWh of energy per day, and the eco-resort’s diesel fuel usage has decreased from 550 to 100 litres per day, enabling the power station to pay for itself in 3 years. The eco-resort plans to complete its transition to renewable energy by 2015, by installing additional solar panels, and a 10-15 kW wind turbine. This paper starts by discussing why the eco-resort chose a hybrid solar power station to transition to renewable energy, and the barriers to change. It then describes the power station, upgrades through to 2013, the power control system, the problems that were solved to realise the potential of a facility operating in a harsh and remote environment, and its performance. The paper concludes by outlining other eco-resort sustainability practices, including education and knowledge-sharing initiatives, and monitoring the island’s environmental and ecological condition.

Talk about a YouTube video in preschool : the mutual production of shared understanding for learning with digital technology

Much of what is written about digital technologies in preschool contexts focuses on young children’s acquisition of skills rather than their meaning-making during use of technologies. In this paper, we consider how the viewing of a YouTube video was used by a teacher and children to produce shared understandings about it. Conversation analysis of talk and interaction during the viewing of the video establishes some of the ways that individual accounts of events were produced for others and then endorsed as shared understandings. The analysis establishes how adults and children made use of verbal and embodied actions during interactions to produce shared understandings of the YouTube video, the events it recorded and written commentary about those events

Reflections on talk about natural disasters by early childhood educators and directors

Facilitated discussion with early childhood staff working with children and families affected by natural disasters in Queensland, Australia, raises issues regarding educational communication in emergencies. This paper reports on these discussions as ‘reflections on talk’. It examines discrepancies between the literature and staff talk, gaps in the literature, and the inaccessible style of some literature-demanded collaborative debate and information re-interpretation. Reframing of the discourse style was used to support staff de-briefing, mutual encouragement, and sharing of insights on promoting resilience in children and families. Formal investigation is required regarding effective emergency-situation talk between staff, as well as with children and families.

Matrix metalloproteinases during wound healing - a double edged sword

The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides a framework for cells and gives skin its tensile strength and elasticity. Loss of its integrity necessitates the clearing of damaged components and the deposition of firstly a provisional matrix and later remodelling of the ECM to support a functionally intact tissue. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are an important family of enzymes that function in the breakdown of the ECM and modulate the function of many biologically active molecules housed in the ECM. Through their enzymatic actions MMPs play a role in fundamental processes such as immune cell infiltration and ECM remodelling during wound repair. Their tight control is necessary for timely wound healing and excessive MMP activity participates in the development and persistence of chronic wounds, while reduced activity contributes to fibrosis. A number of inhibitors have been designed to target this activity and improve wound healing with limited success. Novel strategies are currently being investigated to improve wound healing by targeting MMP modulating molecules.

Pharmacists' understanding of their CPD obligations

The article offers information on the requirement of the continuing professional development (CPD) training and lifelong learning for the legal registration of the Australian practitioners and pharmacists. Topics discussed include reviewing the competitiveness and pharmacy practice benefits, strategic planning for getting the requirement of CPD, and improving and broadening of the knowledge and developing the personal and professional qualities of pharmacists.

Last word : opportunity to educate

The article discusses the importance that learning to live sustainably in order to provide healthy and fulfilling lives for future generations. The things that need to be done differently and the innovative partnerships that are required are highlighted.
