Consideration of theoretical calculations \[E3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-31G(d)\] of the structures of ten C7H2 neutral isomers and the nine corresponding C7H2 radical anions have led us to synthesize four stable C7H2 radical anions in the ion source of our ZAB 2HF mass spectrometer, and to convert these to C7H2 neutrals. The four radical anion isomers prepared were (i) \[(HC equivalent to C)(2)C=C=C\](-.) \[from the reaction between (HC equivalent to C)(3)COCH3 and HO- \], (ii) \[HC=C=C=C=C=C=CH\](-.) \[from the reaction between HC equivalent to C-C equivalent to C-CD(OH)-C equivalent to CH and HO-\], (iii) \[C=C=C=C=C=C=CH2\](-.) \[from the reaction between DC equivalent to C-C equivalent to C-C equivalent to C-CH2OCH2CH3 and HO-\], and (iv) \[C equivalent to C-CH2-C equivalent to C-C equivalent to C\](-.) \[from the bis desilylation reaction of (CH3)(3)Si-C equivalent to C-CH2-C equivalent to C-C equivalent to C-Si (CH3)(3)With SF6-.\]. The four anions were further characterized by their collisional activation (negative ion) and charge reversal (CR, positive ion) mass spectra. The anions were converted into their corresponding neutrals by charge stripping, and the correspondence between the charge reversal (CR) and neutralization reionization (-NR+) mass spectra of each anion is taken as evidence that within the time frame of the -NR+ experiment (some 10(-6) s), each neutral is stable and undergoes no major rearrangement or interconversion to a more stable isomer. Theory and experiment are in accord for these systems.

This paper is a modified version of a lecture which describes the synthesis, structure and reactivity of some neutral molecules of stellar significance. The neutrals are formed in the collision cell of a mass spectrometer following vertical Franck-Condon one electron oxidation of anions of known bond connectivity. Neutrals are characterised by conversion to positive ions and by extensive theoretical studies at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Four systems are considered in detail, viz (i) the formation of linear C-4 and its conversion to the rhombus C-4, (ii) linear C-5 and the atom scrambling of this system when energised, (iii) the stable cumulene oxide CCCCCO, and (iv) the elusive species O2C-CO. The first step in bone healing is forming a blood clot at injured bones. During bone implantation, biomaterials unavoidably come into direct contact with blood, leading to a blood clot formation on its surface prior to bone regeneration. Despite both situations being similar in forming a blood clot at the defect site, most research in bone tissue engineering virtually ignores the important role of a blood clot in supporting healing. Dental implantology has long demonstrated that the fibrin structure and cellular content of a peri-implant clot can greatly affect osteoconduction and de novo bone formation on implant surfaces. This paper reviews the formation of a blood clot during bone healing in related to the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) gels. It is implicated that PRP gels are dramatically altered from a normal clot in healing, resulting conflicting effect on bone regeneration. These results indicate that the effect of clots on bone regeneration depends on how the clots are formed. Factors that influence blood clot structure and properties in related to bone healing are also highlighted. Such knowledge is essential for developing strategies to optimally control blood clot formation, which ultimately alter the healing microenvironment of bone. Of particular interest are modification of surface chemistry of biomaterials, which displays functional groups at varied composition for the purpose of tailoring blood coagulation activation, resultant clot fibrin architecture, rigidity, susceptibility to lysis, and growth factor release. This opens new scope of in situ blood clot modification as a promising approach in accelerating and controlling bone regeneration.

Number theory has in recent decades assumed a great practical importance, due primarily to its application to cryptography. This chapter discusses how elementary concepts of number theory may be illuminated and made accessible to upper secondary school students via appropriate spreadsheet models. In such environments, students can observe patterns, gain structural insight, form and test conjectures, and solve problems. The chapter begins by reviewing literature on the use of spreadsheets in general and the use of spreadsheets in number theory in particular. Two sample applications are then discussed. The first, factoring factorials, is presented and instructions are given to construct a model in Excel 2007. The second application, the RSA cryptosystem, is included because of its importance to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students. Number theoretic concepts relevant to RSA are discussed, and an outline of RSA. is given, with example. The chapter ends with instructions on how to construct a simple spreadsheet illustrating RSA.

In recent years fine and ultra fine particles emitted from internal combustion engines have attracted an increasing level of attention. This attention has arisen from epidemiological studies conducted by a number of research groups and pointing to the health effects resulting from inhalation of fine particles. Previous studies on the influence of fuel sulfur level on diesel vehicle emissions were mainly concentrated on particle mass emissions. MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that mediate post-transcriptional gene silencing. Fear-extinction learning in C57/Bl6J mice led to increased expression of the brain-specific microRNA miR-128b, which disrupted stability of several plasticity-related target genes and regulated formation of fear-extinction memory. Increased miR-128b activity may therefore facilitate the transition from retrieval of the original fear memory toward the formation of a new fear-extinction memory.

A new system has been developed to determine enzyme activities of glutathione transferase θ (GSTT1-1) based on radiometric product detection resulting from the enzymic reaction of methyl chloride with 35S-labelled glutathione. In principle, the method is universally applicable for determination of glutathione transferase activities towards a multiplicity of substrates. The method distinguishes between erythrocyte GSTT1-1 activities of human 'non-conjugators', 'low conjugators' and 'high conjugators'. Application to cytosol preparations of livers and kidneys of male and female Fischer 344 and B6C3F1 mice reveals differential GSTT1-1 activities in hepatic and renal tissues. These ought to be considered in species-specific modellings of organ toxicities of chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Deficiencies in iodine levels have been shown to seriously affect a child’s intellectual development and learning capacity.1 In South-East Asia, iodine deficiency remains a major public health concern. Approximately 30% of the region’s population of 503.6 million have insufficient iodine intake, and only 61% of households have access to iodized salt.1 For this reason, it is necessary to initiate effective, community-based health promotion activities that are targeted toward populations of various ages. Carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) are one of the carbon-based nanomaterials similar to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) but are not widely studied in spite of their great potential applications. Their practical applications are hindered by the challenging fabrication of the CNSs. A physical approach has been proposed recently to fabricate the CNS by rolling up a monolayer graphene nanoribbon (GNR) around a CNT driven by the interaction energy between them. In this study, we perform extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the various factors that impact the formation of the CNS from GNR. Our simulation results show that the formation of the CNS is sensitive to the length of the CNT and temperature. When the GNR is functionalized with hydrogen, the formation of the CNS is determined by the density and distribution of the hydrogen atoms. Graphyne, the allotrope of graphene, is inferior to graphene in the formation of the CNS due to the weaker bonds and the associated smaller atom density. The mechanism behind the rolling of GNR into CNS lies in the balance between the GNR–CNT van der Waals (vdW) interactions and the strain energy of GNR. The present work reveals new important insights and provides useful guidelines for the fabrication of the CNS.

Extending Lash and Urry's (1994) notion of new "imagined communities" through information and communication structures, I ask the question: Are emergent teachers happy when they interact in online learning environments? This question is timely in the context of the ubiquity of online media and its pervasiveness in teachers' everyday work and lives. The research is important nationally and internationally, because the current research is contradictory. On the one hand, feelings of isolation and frustration have been cited as common emotions experienced in many online environments (Su, Bonk, Magjuka, Liu, & Lee, 2005). Yet others report that online communities encourage a sense of belonging and support (Mills, 2011). Emotions are inherently social, are central to learning and online interaction (Shen, Wang, & Shen, 2009). The presentations reports the use of e-motion blogs to explore emotional states of emergent primary teachers in an online learning context as they transition into their first field experience in schools. The original research was conducted with a graduate class of 64 secondary science pre-service teachers in Science Education Curriculum Studies in a large Australian university, including males and females from a variety of cultural backgrounds, aged 17-55 years. Online activities involved the participants watching a series of streamed live lectures within a course of 8 weeks duration, providing a varied set of learning experiences, such as viewing live teaching demonstrations. Each week, participants provided feedback on learning by writing and posting an e-motion diary or web log about their emotional response. The blogs answered the question: What emotions you experience during this learning experience? The descriptive data set included 284 online posts, with students contributing multiple entries. The Language of Appraisal framework, following Martin and White (2005), was used to cluster the discrete emotions within six affect groups. The findings demonstrated that the pre-service teachers' emotional responses tended towards happiness and satisfaction within the typology of affect groups - un/happiness, in/security, and dis/satisfaction. Fewer participants reported that online learning mode triggered negative feelings of frustration, and when this occurred, it often pertained expectations of themselves in the forthcoming field experience in schools or as future teachers. The findings primarily contribute new understanding about emotional states in online communities, and recommendations are provided for supporting the happiness and satisfaction of emergent teachers as they interact in online communities. It demonstrates that online environments can play an important role in fulfilling teachers' need for social interaction and inclusion.

MoS2 nanotube bundles along with embedded nested fullerenes were formed in a gas phase reaction of molybdenum carbonyl and H2S gas with the assistance of I2. The amorphous Mo-S-I intermediates obtained through quenching a modified MOCVD reaction in a large temperature gradient were annealed at elevated temperature in an inert atmosphere. Under the influence of the iodine the amorphous precursor formed a surface film with an enhanced mobility of the molybdenum and sulfur components. Point defects within the MoS2 layers combined with the enhanced surface diffusion lead to a scrolling of the inherently instable MoS2 lamellae.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are nonnucleated liquid capsules, enclosed in deformable viscoelastic membranes with complex three dimensional geometrical structures. Generally, RBC membranes are highly incompressible and resistant to areal changes. However, RBC membranes show a planar shear deformation and out of plane bending deformation. The behaviour of RBCs in blood vessels is investigated using numerical models. All the characteristics of RBC membranes should be addressed to develop a more accurate and stable model. This article presents an effective methodology to model the three dimensional geometry of the RBC membrane with the aid of commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2a and Fortran programming. Initially, a mesh is generated for a sphere using the COMSOL Multiphysics software to represent the RBC membrane. The elastic energy of the membrane is considered to determine a stable membrane shape. Then, the actual biconcave shape of the membrane is obtained based on the principle of virtual work, when the total energy is minimised. The geometry of the RBC membrane could be used with meshfree particle methods to simulate motion and deformation of RBCs in micro-capillaries
How can professional development serve experienced and inexperienced mentors of preservice teachers?

This paper reports on the views of Singaporean teachers of a mandated curriculum innovation aimed at changing the nature of games pedagogy within the physical education curriculum framework in Singapore. Since its first appearance over 20 years ago, Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU), as an approach to games pedagogy has gathered support around the world. Through a process of evolution TGfU now has many guises and one of the latest of these is the Games Concept Approach (GCA) a name given to this pedagogical approach in Singapore. As part of a major national curricular reform project the GCA was identified as the preferred method of games teaching and as a result was mandated as required professional practice within physical education teaching. To prepare teachers for the implementation phase, a training program was developed by the National Institute of Education in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and well known experts in the field from the United States. For this part of the study, 22 teachers from across Singapore were interviewed. The data were used to create three fictional narratives, a process described by Sparkes (2002a) and used more recently by Ryan (2005) in the field of literacy. The stories were framed using Foucault’s (1980/1977) notion of governmentality and Bernstein’s (1996) notion of regulative discourse. The narratives reveal tales of confusion, frustration but also of hope and enthusiasm.
