One important component with particular relevance in battery performance is the cathode, being one of the main responsible elements for cell capacity and cycle life. Carbon coated lithium iron phosphate, C-LiFePO4, active material is one of the most promising cathode materials for the next generation of large scale lithium ion battery applications and strong research efforts are being devoted to it, due to its excellent characteristics, including high capacity, ~170 mAh/g, and safety. This review summarizes the main developments on C-LiFePO4 based cathode film preparation and performance. The effect of the binder, conductive additive, relationship between active material-binder-conductive additive and drying step, in the electrode film fabrication and performance is presented and discussed. Finally, after the presentation of the cell types fabricated with C-LiFePO4 active material and their performance, some conclusions and guidelines for further investigations are outlined.

Separator membranes based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (PVDF-CTFE) were prepared by solvent casting technique based on its phase diagram in N,Ndimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The microstructure of the PVDF-CTFE separator membranes depends on the initial position (temperature and concentration) of the solution in the phase diagram of the PVDF-CTFE/DMF system. A porous microstructure is achieved for PVDF-CTFE membranes with solvent evaporation temperature up to 50 ºC for a polymer/solvent relative concentration of 20 wt%. The ionic conductivity of the separator depends on the degree of porosity and electrolyte uptake, the highest room temperature value being 1.5 mS.cm-1 for the sample with 20 wt% of polymer concentration and solvent evaporation temperature at 25 ºC saturated with 1 mol L-1 lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) in propylene carbonate (PC). This PVDF-CTFE separator membrane in Li/C-LiFePO4 half-cell shows good cyclability and rate capability, showing a discharge value after 50 cycles of 92 mAh.g-1 at 2 C, which is still 55% of the theoretical value. PVDF-CTFE separators are thus excellent candidates for high-power and safety lithium-ion batteries applications.

Bajo los auspicios reformadores del Marqués de Pombal, los nuevos estatutos de la Universidad de Coimbra, ratificados por el rey José I en junio de 1772, representaron una importante revisión de los principales estudios en Portugal. Hacia un largo tiempo que los Estatutos de la Universidad de Coimbra no fueron revisados, y la revisión de los Estatutos de 1559 (rey Sebastián), 1591 (el rey Felipe I de Portugal, II de Castilla) y 1653 (rey João IV), se observa que, en comparación con más de dos siglos de vigencia del mismo modelo con modificaciones más o menos limitados, los Estatutos de 1772 traen un nuevo pensamiento y un nuevo impulso mediante la promoción, en particular, de la educación y el desarrollo de las Ciencias exactas y naturales y la valoración del método experimental. Al mismo tiempo, en España, el rey Carlos III, renuncia a imponer un único modelo de estudios de todas las universidades. En ambos casos, el portugués y el español, la urgencia de las reformas es mas aguda pues que los jesuitas fueron expulsados de los territorios en 1759 y 1767, respectivamente; y tanto precursores como mentores quieren estas reformas para abrir las universidades a la ciencia moderna y el humanismo de la Ilustración. La renovación de los contenidos y métodos de enseñanza en Coimbra fue notoria, con la preocupación notable con la investigación, lo que no era muy común en la época. Había también una preocupación con las necesidades de la sociedad en una forma muy práctica (habiendo sido en la época construido el Observatorio Astronómico, el Laboratorio de Física, etc.). Al mismo tempo, la universidad de Coimbra tuvo como profesores dos matemáticos notables, José Anastácio da Cunha y José Monteiro da Rocha. En España también fueron importantes los ensayos de renovación de los métodos, de apertura a la ciencia de la época, de conexión con las realidades de la sociedad española, de coordinación de esfuerzos para conformar una «comunidad universitaria española». En esta comunicación se hace una discusión de comparación entre las dos reformas ibéricas.

The huge efforts for the achievement of highly purified biomolecules are growing every day. A great number of efficient techniques, such as chromatography, are already available in laboratory for separation processes. However, membrane-based technologies are the best match to assure simplicity, efficiency and easy scale-up procedures. Herein we report the modification of a commercial microfiltration membrane for plasmid DNA purification by agarose gel impregnation. The membrane was characterized by SEM, ATR-FTIR, EDS, contact angle, and porosity measurements. Additionally, the membrane pore radius was estimated from observed rejections of different proteins and with that information the rejection of a 6050 bp plasmid DNA (pDNA) molecule was estimated for different values of flux using a theoretical model of large flexible molecules in membranes with parallel cylindrical pores, which is applicable to pDNA ultrafiltration in conventional membranes, as recently shown in the literature. The experimental results show that the modified membrane has higher pDNA rejections than the predicted by the model, suggesting that the different type of porous structure that a hydrogel has, may have a positive effect on pDNA rejections as compared to other biomolecules with more rigid structures, making this type of modified membranes potential better candidates to be used for the selective recovery of pDNA in this type of bioprocesses.

Creativity and its promotion are widespread concerns in education. However, few efforts have been made to implement intervention programs designed to promote creativity and other related aspects (e.g., academic motivation). The Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), aimed for training creativity representations and creative problem solving skills in young people, has been one of the most implemented programs. This intervention’s materials and activities were adapted for Portuguese students, and a longitudinal study was conducted. The program was implemented during four months, in weekly sessions, by thirteen teachers. Teachers received previous training for the program and during the program’s implementation. Intervention participants included 77 Basic and Secondary Education students, and control participants included 78 equivalent students. Pretest-posttest measures of academic motivation and creativity representations were collected. Results suggest a significant increase, in the intervention group, in motivation and the appropriate representations of creativity. Practical implications and future research perspectives are presented.
