We propose two texture-based approaches, one involving Gabor filters and the other employing log-polar wavelets, for separating text from non-text elements in a document image. Both the proposed algorithms compute local energy at some information-rich points, which are marked by Harris' corner detector. The advantage of this approach is that the algorithm calculates the local energy at selected points and not throughout the image, thus saving a lot of computational time. The algorithm has been tested on a large set of scanned text pages and the results have been seen to be better than the results from the existing algorithms. Among the proposed schemes, the Gabor filter based scheme marginally outperforms the wavelet based scheme.

Extraction of text areas from the document images with complex content and layout is one of the challenging tasks. Few texture based techniques have already been proposed for extraction of such text blocks. Most of such techniques are greedy for computation time and hence are far from being realizable for real time implementation. In this work, we propose a modification to two of the existing texture based techniques to reduce the computation. This is accomplished with Harris corner detectors. The efficiency of these two textures based algorithms, one based on Gabor filters and other on log-polar wavelet signature, are compared. A combination of Gabor feature based texture classification performed on a smaller set of Harris corner detected points is observed to deliver the accuracy and efficiency.

The soil moisture characteristic (SMC) forms an important input to mathematical models of water and solute transport in the unsaturated-soil zone. Owing to their simplicity and ease of use, texture-based regression models are commonly used to estimate the SMC from basic soil properties. In this study, the performances of six such regression models were evaluated on three soils. Moisture characteristics generated by the regression models were statistically compared with the characteristics developed independently from laboratory and in-situ retention data of the soil profiles. Results of the statistical performance evaluation, while providing useful information on the errors involved in estimating the SMC, also highlighted the importance of the nature of the data set underlying the regression models. Among the models evaluated, the one possessing an underlying data set of in-situ measurements was found to be the best estimator of the in-situ SMC for all the soils. Considerable errors arose when a textural model based on laboratory data was used to estimate the field retention characteristics of unsaturated soils.

Hypoeutectic boron addition (0.1 wt.%) to Ti-6Al-4V is known to cause significant refinement of the cast microstructure. In the present investigation, it has been observed that trace boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy also ensures excellent microstructural homogeneity throughout the ingot. A subdued thermal gradient, related to the basic grain refinement mechanism by constitutional undercooling, persists during solidification for the boron-containing alloy and maintains equivalent beta grain growth kinetics at different locations in the ingot. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy shows relatively strong texture with preferred components (e.g. ingot axis parallel to[0 0 0 1] or [1 0 (1) over bar 0]) over the entire ingot and gradual transition of texture components along the radius. For Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy, significant weakening characterizes both the high-temperature beta and room-temperature a texture. In addition to solidification factors that are responsible for weak beta texture development, microstructural differences due to boron addition, e.g. the absence of grain boundary alpha phase and presence of TiB particles, strongly affects the mechanism of beta -> alpha phase transformation and consequently weakens the alpha phase texture. Based on the understanding developed for the boron-modified alloy, a novel mechanism has been proposed for the microstructure and texture formation during solidification and phase transformation. A residual-based strategy to estimate the local truncation error in a finite volume framework for steady compressible flows is proposed. This estimator, referred to as the -parameter, is derived from the imbalance arising from the use of an exact operator on the numerical solution for conservation laws. The behaviour of the residual estimator for linear and non-linear hyperbolic problems is systematically analysed. The relationship of the residual to the global error is also studied. The -parameter is used to derive a target length scale and consequently devise a suitable criterion for refinement/derefinement. This strategy, devoid of any user-defined parameters, is validated using two standard test cases involving smooth flows. A hybrid adaptive strategy based on both the error indicators and the -parameter, for flows involving shocks is also developed. Numerical studies on several compressible flow cases show that the adaptive algorithm performs excellently well in both two and three dimensions.

Instrumented indentation experiments on a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) in as-cast, shot-peened and structurally relaxed conditions were conducted to examine the dependence of plastic deformation on its structural state. Results show significant differences in hardness, H, with structural relaxation increasing it and shot peening markedly reducing it, and slightly changed morphology of shear bands around the indents. This is in contrast to uniaxial compressive yield strength, sigma(y), which remains invariant with the change in the structural state of the alloys investigated. The plastic constraint factor, C = H/sigma(y), of the relaxed BMG increases compared with that of the as-cast glass, indicating enhanced pressure sensitivity upon annealing. In contrast, C of the shot-peened layer was found to be similar to that observed in crystalline metals, indicating that severe plastic deformation could eliminate pressure sensitivity. Microscopic origins for this result, in terms of shear transformation zones and free volume, are discussed.

In this paper the approach for automatic road extraction for an urban region using structural, spectral and geometric characteristics of roads has been presented. Roads have been extracted based on two levels: Pre-processing and road extraction methods. Initially, the image is pre-processed to improve the tolerance by reducing the clutter (that mostly represents the buildings, parking lots, vegetation regions and other open spaces). The road segments are then extracted using Texture Progressive Analysis (TPA) and Normalized cut algorithm. The TPA technique uses binary segmentation based on three levels of texture statistical evaluation to extract road segments where as, Normalizedcut method for road extraction is a graph based method that generates optimal partition of road segments. The performance evaluation (quality measures) for road extraction using TPA and normalized cut method is compared. Thus the experimental result show that normalized cut method is efficient in extracting road segments in urban region from high resolution satellite image.

This paper presents an algorithm for solid model reconstruction from 2D sectional views based on volume-based approach. None of the existing work in automatic reconstruction from 2D orthographic views have addressed sectional views in detail. It is believed that the volume-based approach is better suited to handle different types of sectional views. The volume-based approach constructs the 3D solid by a boolean combination of elementary solids. The elementary solids are formed by sweep operation on loops identified in the input views. The only adjustment to be made for the presence of sectional views is in the identification of loops that would form the elemental solids. In the algorithm, the conventions of engineering drawing for sectional views, are used to identify the loops correctly. The algorithm is simple and intuitive in nature. Results have been obtained for full sections, offset sections and half sections. Future work will address other types of sectional views such as removed and revolved sections and broken-out sections. This work describes the parallelization of High Resolution flow solver on unstructured meshes, HIFUN-3D, an unstructured data based finite volume solver for 3-D Euler equations. For mesh partitioning, we use METIS, a software based on multilevel graph partitioning. The unstructured graph used for partitioning is associated with weights both on its vertices and edges. The data residing on every processor is split into four layers. Such a novel procedure of handling data helps in maintaining the effectiveness of the serial code. The communication of data across the processors is achieved by explicit message passing using the standard blocking mode feature of Message Passing Interface (MPI). The parallel code is tested on PACE++128 available in CFD Center

In this paper, we explore a novel idea of using high dynamic range (HDR) technology for uncertainty visualization. We focus on scalar volumetric data sets where every data point is associated with scalar uncertainty. We design a transfer function that maps each data point to a color in HDR space. The luminance component of the color is exploited to capture uncertainty. We modify existing tone mapping techniques and suitably integrate them with volume ray casting to obtain a low dynamic range (LDR) image. The resulting image is displayed on a conventional 8-bits-per-channel display device. The usage of HDR mapping reveals fine details in uncertainty distribution and enables the users to interactively study the data in the context of corresponding uncertainty information. We demonstrate the utility of our method and evaluate the results using data sets from ocean modeling.

Visualization of intracellular organelles is achieved using a newly developed high throughput imaging cytometry system. This system interrogates the microfluidic channel using a sheet of light rather than the existing point-based scanning techniques. The advantages of the developed system are many, including, single-shot scanning of specimens flowing through the microfluidic channel at flow rate ranging from micro-to nano- lit./min. Moreover, this opens-up in-vivo imaging of sub-cellular structures and simultaneous cell counting in an imaging cytometry system. We recorded a maximum count of 2400 cells/min at a flow-rate of 700 nl/min, and simultaneous visualization of fluorescently-labeled mitochondrial network in HeLa cells during flow. The developed imaging cytometry system may find immediate application in biotechnology, fluorescence microscopy and nano-medicine. (C) 2014 Author(s). Background: Understanding channel structures that lead to active sites or traverse the molecule is important in the study of molecular functions such as ion, ligand, and small molecule transport. Efficient methods for extracting, storing, and analyzing protein channels are required to support such studies. Further, there is a need for an integrated framework that supports computation of the channels, interactive exploration of their structure, and detailed visual analysis of their properties. Results: We describe a method for molecular channel extraction based on the alpha complex representation. The method computes geometrically feasible channels, stores both the volume occupied by the channel and its centerline in a unified representation, and reports significant channels. The representation also supports efficient computation of channel profiles that help understand channel properties. We describe methods for effective visualization of the channels and their profiles. These methods and the visual analysis framework are implemented in a software tool, CHEXVIS. We apply the method on a number of known channel containing proteins to extract pore features. Results from these experiments on several proteins show that CHEXVIS performance is comparable to, and in some cases, better than existing channel extraction techniques. Using several case studies, we demonstrate how CHEXVIS can be used to study channels, extract their properties and gain insights into molecular function. Conclusion: CHEXVIS supports the visual exploration of multiple channels together with their geometric and physico-chemical properties thereby enabling the understanding of the basic biology of transport through protein channels. The CHEXVIS web-server is freely available at http://vgl.serc.iisc.ernet.in/chexvis/. The web-server is supported on all modern browsers with latest Java plug-in.

With the availability of a huge amount of video data on various sources, efficient video retrieval tools are increasingly in demand. Video being a multi-modal data, the perceptions of ``relevance'' between the user provided query video (in case of Query-By-Example type of video search) and retrieved video clips are subjective in nature. We present an efficient video retrieval method that takes user's feedback on the relevance of retrieved videos and iteratively reformulates the input query feature vectors (QFV) for improved video retrieval. The QFV reformulation is done by a simple, but powerful feature weight optimization method based on Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) technique. A video retrieval system with video indexing, searching and relevance feedback (RF) phases is built for demonstrating the performance of the proposed method. The query and database videos are indexed using the conventional video features like color, texture, etc. However, we use the comprehensive and novel methods of feature representations, and a spatio-temporal distance measure to retrieve the top M videos that are similar to the query. In feedback phase, the user activated iterative on the previously retrieved videos is used to reformulate the QFV weights (measure of importance) that reflect the user's preference, automatically. It is our observation that a few iterations of such feedback are generally sufficient for retrieving the desired video clips. The novel application of SPSA based RF for user-oriented feature weights optimization makes the proposed method to be distinct from the existing ones. The experimental results show that the proposed RF based video retrieval exhibit good performance.

In the present investigation, the wear behaviour of a creep-resistant AE42 magnesium alloy and its composites reinforced with Saffil short fibres and SiC particles in various combinations is examined in the longitudinal direction i.e., the plane containing random fibre orientation is perpendicular to the steel counter-face. Wear tests are conducted on a pin-on-disc set-up under dry sliding condition having a constant sliding velocity of 0.837 m/s for a constant sliding distance of 2.5 km in the load range of 10-40 N. It is observed that the wear rate increases with increase in load for the alloy and the composites, as expected. Wear rate of the composites is lower than the alloy and the hybrid composites exhibit a lower wear rate than the Saffil short fibres reinforced composite at all the loads. Therefore, the partial replacement of Saffil short fibres by an equal volume fraction of SiC particles not only reduces the cost but also improves the wear resistance of the composite. Microstructural investigation of the surface and subsurface of the worn pin and wear debris is carried out to explain the observed results and to understand the wear mechanisms. It is concluded that the presence of SiC particles in the hybrid composites improves the wear resistance because these particles remain intact and retain their load bearing capacity even at the highest load employed, they promote the formation of iron-rich transfer layer and they also delay the fracture of Saffil short fibres to higher loads. Under the experimental conditions used in the present investigation, the dominant wear mechanism is found to be abrasion for the AE42 alloy and its composites. It is accompanied by severe plastic deformation of surface layers in case of alloy and by the fracture of Saffil short fibres as well as the formation of iron-rich transfer layer in case of composites.
