Represented by approximately 85 species, Hemidactylus is one of the most diverse and widely distributed genera of reptiles in the world. In the Indian subcontinent, this genus is represented by 28 species out of which at least 13 are endemic to this region. Here, we report the phylogeny of the Indian Hemidactylus geckos based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers sequenced from multiple individuals of widely distributed as well as endemic congeners of India. Results indicate that a majority of the species distributed in India form a distinct clade whose members are largely confined to the Indian subcontinent thus representing a unique Indian radiation. The remaining Hemidactylus geckos of India belong to two other geographical clades representing the Southeast Asian and West-Asian arid zone species. Additionally, the three widely distributed, commensal species (H. brookii, H. frenatus and H. flaviviridis) are nested within the Indian radiation suggesting their Indian origin. Dispersal-vicariance analysis also supports their Indian origin and subsequent dispersal out-of-India into West-Asian arid zone and Southeast Asia. Thus, Indian subcontinent has served as an important arena for diversification amongst the Hemidactylus geckos and in the evolution and spread of its commensal geckos. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Faceted ZnO nanorods with different aspect ratios were synthesized by a solvothermal method by tuning the reaction time. Increased reaction leads to the formation of high aspect ratio ZnO nanorods largely bound by the prism planes. The high aspect ratio rods showed significantly higher visible light photocatalytic activity when compared to the lower aspect ratio structures. It is proposed that the higher activity is due to better charge separation in the elongated 1D structure. In addition, the fraction of unsaturated Zn2+ sites is higher on the {10 (1) over bar0} facets, leading to better adsorption of oxygen-containing species. These species enhance the production of reactive radicals that are responsible for photodegradation. The photocurrent for these ZnO nanostructures under solar light was measured and a direct correlation between photocurrent and aspect ratio was observed. Since the underlying mechanisms for photodegradation and photocurrent generation are directly related to the efficiency of electron-hole creation and separation, this observation corroborates that the charge separation processes are indeed enhanced in the high aspect ratio structures. The efficiency of photoconduction (electron-hole pair separation) could be further improved by attaching Au nanoparticles on ZnO, which can act as a sink for the electrons. This heterostructure exhibits a high chemisorption of oxygen, which facilitates the production of highly reactive radicals contributing to the high photoreactivity. The suggested mechanisms are applicable to other n-type semiconductor nanostructures with important implications for applications relating to energy and the environment.

The formation of the helical morphology in monolayers and bilayers of chiral amphiphilic assemblies is believed to be driven at least partly by the interactions at the chiral centers of the amphiphiles. However, a detailed microscopic understanding of these interactions and their relation with the helix formation is still not clear. In this article a study of the molecular origin of the chirality-driven helix formation is presented by calculating, for the first time, the effective pair potential between a pair of chiral molecules. This effective potential depends on the relative sizes of the groups attached to the two chiral centers, on the orientation of the amphiphile molecules, and also on the distance between them. We find that for the mirror-image isomers (in the racemic modification) the minimum energy conformation is a nearly parallel alignment of the molecules. On the other hand, the same for a pair of molecules of one kind of enantiomer favors a tilt angle between them, thus leading to the formation of a helical morphology of the aggregate. The tilt angle is determined by the size of the groups attached to the chiral centers of the pair of molecules considered and in many cases predicted it to be close to 45 degrees. The present study, therefore, provides a molecular origin of the intrinsic bending force, suggested by Helfrich (J. Chem. Phys. 1986, 85, 1085-1087), to be responsible for the formation of helical structure. This effective potential may explain many of the existing experimental results, such as the size and the concentration dependence of the formation of helical morphology. It is further found that the elastic forces can significantly modify the pitch predicted by the chiral interactions alone and that the modified real pitch is close to the experimentally observed value. The present study is expected to provide a starting point for future microscopic studies.

Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we determine and analyze the Born effective charges Z(*) that describe the coupling between electric field and atomic displacements for ferromagnetic double-perovskite compound, La2NiMnO6. We find that th Born effective charge matrix of Ni in La2NiMnO6, has an anomalously large antisymmetric component, whose magnitude reduces substantially upon change in the magnetic ordering between Ni and Mn, showing it to be a magnetism-dependent electrostructural coupling. We use a local picture of the electronic structure obtained with Wannier functions, along with its band-by-band decomposition to determine its electronic origin.

Arylalkylcyclopropenethiones undergo highly regioselective photochemical a-cleavage via thioketene carbene intermediates, giving rise to products derived from the less stabilized carbene. UHF MIND0/3 calculations provide an insight into this unexpected regioselectivity. The nx* triplet of cyclopropenethione is calculated to have a highly unsymmetrical geometry with an elongated C-C bond, a delocalized thiaaUyl fragment, and a pyramidal radicaloid carbon (which eventually becomes the carbene center). From this molecular electronic structure, aryl group stabilization is expected to be more effective at the thiaallyl group rather than at the pyramidal radical center. Thus, the stability of the substituted triplet thione rather than that of the thioketene carbene determines the preferred regiochemistry of cleavage. The unusual structure of the cyclopropenethione triplet is suggested to be related to one of the Jahn-Teller distorted forms of the cyclopropenyl radical. An alternative symmetrical structure is adopted by the corresponding triplet of cyclopropenone, partly accounting for its differing photobehavior. A similar structural dichotomy is demonstrated for the corresponding radical anions as well.

Anomalous photoinduced transformations in amorphous Ge-based chalcogenide thin films are established as being due to photochemical modification of the surfaces, by photoemission studies. Mass measurements indicate that the giant thickness reduction on irradiation is predominantly due to the loss of material as a result of photogenerated volatile high vapor pressure oxide fractions on the surface. This extrinsic contribution contradicts the models of the phenomenon proposed so far, which are based purely on intrinsic structural transformations.

The perturbation treatment previously given is extended to explain the process of hydrogen abstraction from the various hydrogen donor molecules by the triplet nπ* state of ketones or the ground state of the alkyl or alkoxy radical. The results suggest that, as the ionization energy of the donor bonds is decreased, the reaction is accelerated and it is not influenced by the bond strength of the donor bonds. The activation barrier in such reactions arises from a weakening of the charge resonance term as the ionization energy of the donor bond increases.

This is an experimental and theoretical Study of a laminar separation bubble and the associated linear stability mechanisms. Experiments were performed over a flat plate kept in a wind tunnel, with an imposed pressure gradient typical of an aerofoil that would involve a laminar separation bubble. The separation bubble was characterized by measurement of surface-pressure distribution and streamwise velocity using hot-wire anemometry. Single component hot-wire anemometry was also used for a detailed study of the transition dynamics. It was foundthat the so-called dead-air region in the front portion of the bubble corresponded to a region of small disturbance amplitudes, with the amplitude reaching a maximum value close to the reattachment point. An exponential growth rate of the disturbance was seen in the region upstream of the mean maximum height of the bubble, and this was indicative of a linear instability mechanism at work. An infinitesimal disturbance was impulsively introduced into the boundary layer upstream of separation location, and the wave packet was tracked (in an ensemble-averaged sense) while it was getting advected downstream. The disturbance was found to be convective in nature. Linear stability analyses (both the Orr-Sommerfeld and Rayleigh calculations) were performed for mean velocity profiles, starting from an attached adverse-pressure-gradient boundary layer all the way up to the front portion of the separation-bubble region (i.e. up to the end of the dead-air region in which linear evolution of the disturbance could be expected). The conclusion from the present work is that the primary instability mechanism in a separation bubble is inflectional in nature, and its origin can be traced back to upstream of the separation location. In other words, the inviscid inflectional instability of the separated shear layer should be logically seen as an extension of the instability of the upstream attached adverse-pressure-gradient boundary layer. This modifies the traditional view that pegs the origin of the instability in a separation bubble to the detached shear layer Outside the bubble, with its associated Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism. We contendthat only when the separated shear layer has moved considerably away from the wall (and this happens near the maximum-height location of the mean bubble), a description by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability paradigm, with its associated scaling principles, Could become relevant. We also propose a new scaling for the most amplified frequency for a wall-bounded shear layer in terms of the inflection-point height and the vorticity thickness and show it to be universal.

We report here that the structural origin of an easily reversible Ge15Te83Si2 glass can be a promising candidate for phase change random access memories. In situ Raman scattering studies on Ge15Te83Si2 sample, undertaken during the amorphous set and reset processes, indicate that the degree of disorder in the glass is reduced from off to set state. It is also found that the local structure of the sample under reset condition is similar to that in the amorphous off state. Electron microscopic studies on switched samples indicate the formation of nanometric sized particles of c-SiTe2 structure. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

Flourite-type nanocrystalline Ce0.9Fe0.1O2-delta and Ce0.89Fe0.1Pd0.01O2-delta solid solutions have been synthesized by solution combustion method,'.which show higher oxygen storage/release property (OSC) compared to CeO2 and Ce0.8Zr0.2O2. Temperature programmed reduction an XPS study reveal that the presence of Pd ion in Ce0.9Fe0.1O2-delta facilitates complete reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ state and partial reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ state at.temperatures as low as 105 degrees C compared to 400 degrees C for monometal-ionic Ce0.9Fe0.1O2-delta. Fe3+ ion is reduced to Fe2+ and not to Feo due to favorable redox potential for Ce4+ + Fe2+ -> Ce3+ + Fe3+ reaction. Using first-principles density functional theory calculation we determine M-O (M = Pd, Fe, Ce) bond lengths, and find that bond lengths vary from shorter (2.16 angstrom) to longer (2.9 angstrom) bond distances compared to mean Ce-O bond distance of 2.34 angstrom. for CeO2. Using these results in bond valence analysis, we show that oxygen with bond valences as low as -1.55 are created, leading to activation of lattice oxygen in the bimetal ionic catalyst. Temperatures of CO oxidation and NO reduction by CO/H-2 are lower with the bimetalionic Ce0.89Fe0.1Pd0.01O2-delta catalyst compared to monometal-ionic Ce0.9Fe0.1O2-delta and Ce0.99Pd0.01O2-delta catalysts. From XPS studies of Pd impregnated on CeO2 and Fe2O3 oxides, we show that the synergism leading to low temperature activation of lattice oxygen in bimetal-ionic catalyst Ce0.89Fe0.1Pd0.01O2-delta is due to low-temperature reduction of Pd2+ to Pd-0, followed by Pd-0 + 2Fe(3+) -> Pd2+ + 2Fe(2+), Pd-0 + 2Ce(4+) -> Pd2+ + 2Ce(3+) redox reaction.

We use a combination of classical model and first-principles density functional theory calculations to study lattice dynamics of Y2W3O12 and identify phonons responsible for its negative thermal expansion (NTE). Born dynamical charges of various atoms are found to deviate anomalously from their nominal values. We find that the phonons with energy from 4 to 10 meV are the primary contributors to its NTE. These phonons involve rotations of the YO6 octahedra and WO4 tetrahedra in mutually opposite sense and collective translational atomic displacements, reflecting a strong mixing between acoustic and optic modes.

Internal structures of extraordinarily luminescent semiconductor nanoparticles are probed with photoelectron spectroscopy, establishing a gradient alloy structure as an essential ingredient for the observed phenomenon. Comparative photoluminescence lifetime measurements provide direct evidence for a minimization of nonradiative decay channels because of the removal of interfacial defects due to a progressive change in the lattice parameters in such graded structures, exhibiting a nearly single exponential decay Quantum mechanical, calculations suggest a differential extent of spatial collapse of the electron and the hole wave functions in a way that helps to enhance the photoluminescence efficiency, while at the same time increasing the lifetime of the excited state, as observed in the experiments.
