A new strategy for the total synthesis of (±)-seychellene which involves (i) a regiospecific construction of a bicyclo(2.2.2)octene moiety having a methyl group at the bridgehead and (ii) a vinyl radical induced intramolecular Michael addition is described.

Addition of NaOMe, NaOEt, or NaOPr(i) to dispironaphthalenone 1 resulted in the formation of diketones 4a-c and 5a-c. The structure assigned to 4a was confirmed by conversion to the known hemiacetal 3. Similar addition of carbon nucleophiles like diethyl malonate, dimethyl malonate, methyl cyanoacetate, and ethyl cyanoacetate afforded diketones 4d-g. Formation of these compounds has been rationalized.

Potassamide induced in situ alkylation of 4-cyano-3-methoxy-1-methyl-5, 6-dihydroisoquinoline (1a) with allyl bromide gives the 5-allyl- and 5,9-diallyl-5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (1c and 1d), isoquinoline derivative 2 and 4-allyl-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-3(2H)-one (3a). However, potassamide induced in situ alkylation of In with buten-2-one, mesityl oxide and acrylonitrile results in the formation of only 5-alkylated 5,6-dihydroisoquinoline derivatives 1e-g along with fully aromatised compound 2.

We address the problem of exact complex-wave reconstruction in digital holography. We show that, by confining the object-wave modulation to one quadrant of the frequency domain, and by maintaining a reference-wave intensity higher than that of the object, one can achieve exact complex-wave reconstruction in the absence of noise. A feature of the proposed technique is that the zero-order artifact, which is commonly encountered in hologram reconstruction, can be completely suppressed in the absence of noise. The technique is noniterative and nonlinear. We also establish a connection between the reconstruction technique and homomorphic signal processing, which enables an interpretation of the technique from the perspective of deconvolution. Another key contribution of this paper is a direct link between the reconstruction technique and the two-dimensional Hilbert transform formalism proposed by Hahn. We show that this connection leads to explicit Hilbert transform relations between the magnitude and phase of the complex wave encoded in the hologram. We also provide results on simulated as well as experimental data to validate the accuracy of the reconstruction technique. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Cross-polarization from the dipolar reservoir for a range of mismatched Hartmann-Hahn conditions has been considered. Experiment, in general, agrees with the dispersive Lorentzian behavior expected on the basis of quasi-equilibrium theory. It is observed that inclusion of additional mechanisms of polarization transfer lead to an improvment of the fit of the experimental results. The utility of extending the technique to the case of ordered long chain molecules, such as liquid crystals, for the measurement of the local dipolar field is also presented. A simple and convenient tandem methodology for the enantiospecific generation of functionalised bicyclo[3.3.1] nonanes 9,14-18, via intermolecular alkylation of Michael donors with 10-bromocarvones 7, 10 and 11, followed by intramolcular Michael addition, is achieved. An unsuccessful attempt for the extension of the methodology for a possible short enantiospecific approach to AB-ring system 22 of taxanes via the allyl bromide 21, is also described.

A direct vinylogous Michael reaction of gamma-substituted deconjugated butenolides with nitroolefins has been developed with the help of a newly identified quinine-derived bifunctional catalyst, allowing the synthesis of densely functionalized products with contiguous quaternary and tertiary stereocenters in excellent yield with perfect diastereoselectivity (>20 : 1 dr) and high enantioselectivity (up to 99 : 1 er).

In this Letter, we examine magnetization in double- and zero-quantum reservoirs of an ensemble of spin-1/2 nuclei and describe their role in determining the sensitivity of a class of separated local field NMR experiments based on Hartmann-Hahn cross-polarization. We observe that for the liquid crystal system studied, a large dilute spin-polarization, obtained initially by the use of adiabatic cross-polarization, can enhance the sensitivity of the above experiment. The signal enhancement factors, however, are found to vary and depend on the local dynamics. The experimental results have been utilized to obtain the local order-parameters of the system.
