The simple two dimensional C-13-satellite J/D-resolved experiments have been proposed for the visualization of enantiomers, extraction of homo- and hetero-nuclear residual dipolar couplings and also H-1 chemical shift differences between the enantiomers in the anisotropic medium. The significant advantages of the techniques are in the determination of scalar couplings of bigger organic molecules. The scalar couplings specific to a second abundant spin such as F-19 can be selectively extracted from the severely overlapped spectrum. The methodologies are demonstrated on a chiral molecule aligned in the chiral liquid crystal medium and two different organic molecules in the isotropic solutions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We report a single C-13 spin edited selective proton-proton correlation experiment to decipher overcrowded 13C coupled proton NMR spectra of weakly dipolar coupled spin systems. The experiment unravels the masked C-13 satellites in proton spectrum and permits the measurement of one bond carbon-proton residual dipolar couplings in I3S and for each diastereotopic proton in I2S groups. It also provides all the possible homonuclear proton-proton residual couplings which are otherwise difficult to extract from the broad and featureless one dimensional H-1 spectrum, in addition to enantiodifferentiation in a chiral molecule. Employment of heteronuclear (C-13) decoupling in the evolution period results in complete demixing of overlapped signals from enantiomers. The observed anomalous intensity pattern in strongly dipolar coupled methyl protons in methyl selective correlation experiment has been interpreted using polarization operator formalism. Given a classical dynamical theory with second-class constraints, it is sometimes possible to construct another theory with first-class constraints, i.e., a gauge-invariant one, which is physically equivalent to the first theory. We identify some conditions under which this may be done, explaining the general principles and working out several examples. Field theoretic applications include the chiral Schwinger model and the non-linear sigma model. An interesting connection with the work of Faddeev and Shatashvili is pointed out.

We calculate the kaon B parameter in quenched lattice QCD at beta=6.0 using Wilson fermions at kappa=0.154 and 0.155. We use two kinds of nonlocal (''smeared'') sources for quark propagators to calculate the matrix elements between states of definite momentum. The use of smeared sources yields results with much smaller errors than obtained in previous calculations with Wilson fermions. By combining results for p=(0,0,0) and p=(0,0,1), we show that one can carry out the noperturbative subtraction necessary to remove the dominant lattice artifacts induced by the chiral-symmetry-breaking term in the Wilson action. Our final results are in good agreement with those obtained using staggered fermions. We also present results for B parameters of the DELTAI = 3/2 part of the electromagnetic penguin operators, and preliminary results for B(K) in the presence of two flavors of dynamical quarks.

The omega(1)-heterodecoupled-C-13-filtered proton detected NMR experiments are reported for the accurate quantification of enantiomeric excess in chiral molecules embedded in chiral liquid crystal. The differential values of both H-1-H-1 and C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings in the direct dimension and only H-1-H-1 dipolar couplings in the indirect dimension enable unraveling of overlapped enantiomeric peaks. The creation of unequal C-13-bound proton signal for each enantiomer in the INEPT block and non-uniform excitation of coherences in homonuclear multiple quantum experiments do not yield accurate quantification of enantiomeric excess. In circumventing these difficulties, a coupling dependent intensity correction factor has been invoked. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An overview of the current trends in the lipid design for specific applications has been presented. Lipids with different surface charge and hydrophobic backbone undergo aggregation to produce lamellae or bilayer and multilayer vesicles in aqueous media. Various aspects of present development of chiral superstructures and enzyme-mimics have been discussed. Utility of these molecules for potential applications in immunomodulation and sustained drug-delivery systems is also summarized.

Radical catalyzed thiol-ene reaction has become a useful alternative to the Huisgen-type click reaction as it helps to expand the variability in reaction conditions as well as the range of clickable entities. Thus, direct generation of hyper-branched polymers bearing peripheral allyl groups that could be clicked using a variety of functional thiols would be of immense value. A specifically designed AB(2) type monomer, that carries two allyl benzyl ethers groups and one alcohol functionality, was shown to undergo self-condensation under acid-catalyzed melt-transetherification to yield a hyperbranched polyether that carries numerous allyl end-groups. Importantly, it was shown that the kinetics of polymerization is not dramatically affected by the change of the ether unit from previously studied methyl benzyl ether to an allyl benzyl ether. The peripheral allyl groups were readily clicked quantitatively, using a variety of thiols, to generate an hydrocarbon-soluble octadecyl-derivative, amphiphilic systems using 2-mercaptoethanol and chiral amino acid (N-benzoyl cystine) derivatized hyperbranched structures; thus demonstrating the versatility of this novel class of clickable hyperscaffolds. It is widely known that the compressed monolayers and bilayers of chiral lipids or fatty acids form helical morphologies, while the corresponding racemic modification gives only flat platelets without twist. No molecular explanation of this phenomenon is yet available, although subtle interactions at the chiral centers have often been proposed as the driving force behind the morphology of the aggregate to form a particular shape. In the present study, the morphologies of the chiral amphiphilic assemblies have been predicted on the basis of an effective pair potential between the molecules, which depends on the relative sizes of the groups attached to the chiral centers, the orientation of the amphiphilic molecules and also on the distance between them. It is shown that fur a pair of same kind of enantiomers, the minimum energy conformation favours a twist angle between them. This twist between the neighbouring molecules gives rise to the helicity of the aggregate. The present theory also shows from the molecular considerations that for a pair of mirror-image isomers (i.e. the racemic modification) the minimum energy conformation corresponds to the zero angle between the molecules, thus giving rise to flat platelets as observed in experiments. Another fascinating aspect of such chirality driven helical structures is that the sense (or the handedness) of the helix is highly specific about the chirality of the monomer concerned. The molecular theory shows, for the first time, that the sense of the helical structures in many cases is determined by the sizes of the groups attached to the chiral centers and the effective potential between them. The predicted senses of the helical structures are in complete agreement with the experimental results.

A four step, efficient and general methodology for the conversion of a cyclic ketone into the corresponding alpha-spiro-beta-methylene-gamma-butyrolactone, the key structural feature present in tricyclic sesquiterpenes bakkanes, has been developed employing a regiospecific 5-exo dig radical cyclisation reaction as the key step. The methodology has been extended to the total synthesis of bakkanes including homogynolide-B and chiral homogynolide-A.

The use of fac-[Mo(CO)(3)(MeCN)(eta(2)-L(1))] (1a) {L(1) = Ph(2)PN(Pr-i)PPh(DMP)}(2) as a precursor to metalloligands and bimetallic, heterotrimetallic, and heptacoordinated complexes is reported. The reaction of 1a with diphosphazane, dppa, or a diphosphinoalkane such as dppm or dppe yields the fac-eta(1)-diphosphine substituted metalloligands, fac-[Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-L(1))(eta(1)-PXP)] {PXP = dppa (2), dppm (3), and dppe (4)}. These undergo isomerization to yield the corresponding mer-diphosphine complexes (5-7). Oxidation of the uncoordinated phosphorus atom of the mer-eta(1)-dppm-substituted complex eventually provides mer-[Mo(CO)(3)-(eta(2)-L(1)){eta(1)-Ph(2)PCH(2)P(O)Ph(2)}](8). The structure of the latter complex has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction {triclinic system, P ($) over bar 1; a = 11.994(3), b = 14.807(2), c = 15.855(3) Angstrom; alpha = 114.24(1), beta = 91.35(2), and gamma = 98.95(1)degrees; Z = 2, 4014 data (F-0 > 5 sigma(F-0)), R = 0.066, R(W) = 0.069}. Treatment of the dppe metalloligand 7 with [PtCl2(COD)] yields the heterotrimetallic complex cis-[PtCl2{mer-[Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-L(1))(eta(1)-dppe]}(2)] (9). Attempts to prepare a related trimetallic complex with the dppm-containing metalloligand were unsuccessful; only the tetracarbonyl complex cis-[Mo(CO)(4)(eta(2)-L(1))] (1b) and cis-[PtCl2(eta(2)-dppm)] were obtained. Reaction of la with dppe in the ratio 2:1 yields the mer-mer dinuclear complex [{mer-[Mo(CO)(3)(eta(2)-L(1))]}(2)(mu-dppe)] (10) bridged by dppe. Oxidation of 1a with iodine yields the Mo(II) heptacoordinated complex [MoI2(CO)(2)(eta(3)-L(1))] (11) with tridentate PPN coordination. The same Mo(II) complex 11 is also obtained by the direct oxidation of the tetracarbonyl complex cis-[Mo(CO)(4)(eta(2)-L(1))] (1b) with iodine. The structure of 11 has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies {monoclinic system, Cc; a = 10.471(2), b = 19.305(3), c = 17.325(3) Angstrom; beta = 95.47(2)degrees; Z = 4, 3153 data (F-0 > 5 sigma(F-0)), R = 0.049, R(W) = 0.051}. This complex exhibits an unusual capped-trigonal prismatic geometry around the metal. A similar heptacoordinated complex 12 with a chiral diphosphazane ligand {L(3) = (S,R)-P(h)2PN-(*CHMePh)*PPh(DMP)} has also been synthesized.

Troger's base was the first amine to be resolved where the chirality was solely due to very high inversion barrier around nitrogen atom(s). Though the molecule was known over a century, work done during the past one decade has shown that Troger's base and its analogues could be used as chiral solvating agents, DNA-binding ligands and for the construction of biomimetic molecular receptors and clathrate hosts, Asymmetric synthesis of Troger's base analogues has also been achieved recently, Because of the rigid, 'V'-shaped chiral nature of this molecule, there is a growing interest for use of this unit in the design of potential host systems, This review article focuses on the chemistry of Troger's base along with the possible future utilities.

We report the C-HETSERF experiment for determination of long- and short-range homo- and heteronuclear scalar couplings ((n)J(HH) and (n)J(XH), n >= 1) of organic molecules with a low sensitivity dilute heteronucleus in natural abundance. The method finds significant advantage in measurement of relative signs of long-range heteronuclear total couplings in chiral organic liquid crystal. The advantage of the method is demonstrated for the measurement of residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) in enantiomers oriented in the chiral liquid crystal with a focus to unambiguously assign R/S designation in a 2D spectrum. The alignment tensor calculated from the experimental RDCs and with the computed structures of enantiomers obtained by DFT calculations provides the size of the back-calculated RDCs. Smaller root-mean-square deviations (rmsd) between experimental and calculated RDCs indicate better agreement with the input structure and its correct designation of the stereogenic center.
