A moving magnet linear motor compressor or pressure wave generator (PWG) of 2 cc swept volume with dual opposed piston configuration has been developed to operate miniature pulse tube coolers. Prelimnary experiments yielded only a no-load cold end temperature of 180 K. Auxiliary tests and the interpretation of detailed modeling of a PWG suggest that much of the PV power has been lost in the form of blow-by at piston seals due to large and non-optimum clearance seal gap between piston and cylinder. The results of experimental parameters simulated using Sage provide the optimum seal gap value for maximizing the delivered PV power.

Metal-ion (Ag, Co, Ni, and Pd) doped TiO2 nanocatalysts were successfully embedded on carbon-covered alumina supports. The CCA-embedded catalysts were crystalline and had a high surface area compared to the free metal-ion doped titania nanocatalysts while they still retained the anatase phase of the core TiO2. These catalysts were photocatalytically active under solar light irradiation. Rhodamine B was used as a model pollutant and the reactivity followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The reaction rate of the CCA-supported catalysts was Pd > Ag > Co > Ni. Among the ratios of the CCA:catalyst used, it was found that the 1:1 ratio had the fastest reaction rate, followed by the 1:2 ratio, while the 2:1 ratio exhibited the lowest reaction rate. The CCA/metal-ion doped titania were found to have photocatalytic activities comparable with those of CCA-supported titania.

Phosphogypsum is added to building materials to accelerate fly ash pozzolanic reaction and contributes to early strength development of concrete. The release of unacceptable fluoride levels by phoshogypsum on contact with water is a major impediment in its usage to manufacture building products because excess fluoride consumption causes dental and skeletal fluorosis. This paper examines the efficacy of fly ash pozzolanic reactions in controlling fluoride release by phosphogypsum. Fly ash (FA), sand (S), lime (L), and phosphogypsum (G) (FA-S-L-G) slurries are cured for various periods, and the fluoride released by the mix is monitored as a function of time. A substantial reduction in fluoride release was observed and is attributed to entrapment of phosphogypsum particles in a cementious matrix formed by fly ash-lime pozzolanic reactions coupled with consumption of fluoride in formation of insoluble compounds. The compressive strength developed by compacted FA-S-L-G specimens with time was observed to be a three-stage process; maximum strength mobilization occurred during 14 and 28days of curing at room temperature. Exposure of the compacted FA-S-L-G specimens to acidic and alkaline environments for 9 days did not impact their compressive strengths. (C) 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Effect of stress and interface defects on photo luminescence property of a silicon nano-crystal (Si-nc) embedded in amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2) are studied in this paper using a self-consistent quantum-continuum based modeling framework. Si-ncs or quantum dots show photoluminescence at room temperature. Whether its origin is due to Si-nc/a-SiO2 interface defects or quantum confinement of carriers in Si-nc is still an outstanding question. Earlier reports have shown that stresses greater than 12 GPa change the indirect energy band gap structure of bulk Si to a direct energy band gap structure. Such stresses are observed very often in nanostructures and these stresses influence the carrier confinement energy significantly. Hence, it is important to determine the effect of stress in addition to the structure of interface defects on photoluminescence property of Si-nc. In the present work, first a Si-nc embedded in a-SiO2 is constructed using molecular dynamics simulation framework considering the actual conditions they are grown so that the interface and residual stress in the structure evolves naturally during formation. We observe that the structure thus created has an interface of about 1 nm thick consisting of 41.95% of defective states mostly Sin+ (n = 0 to 3) coordination states. Further, both the Si-nc core and the embedding matrix are observed to be under a compressive strain. This residual strain field is applied in an effective mass k.p Hamiltonian formulation to determine the energy states of the carriers. The photo luminescence property computed based on the carrier confinement energy and interface energy states associated with defects will be analysed in details in the paper.

We report here, a finite difference thermal diffusion (FDTD) model for controlling the cross-section and the guiding nature of the buried channel waveguides fabricated on GeGaS bulk glasses using the direct laser writing technique. Optimization of the laser parameters for guiding at wavelength 1550 nm is done experimentally and compared with the theoretical values estimated by FDTD model. The mode field diameter (MFD) between 5.294 mu m and 24.706 mu m were attained by suitable selection of writing speed (1mm/s to 4 mm/s) and pulse energy (623 nJ to 806 nJ) of the laser at a fixed repletion rate of 100 kHz. Transition from single-mode to multi-mode waveguide is observed at pulse energy 806nJ as a consequence of heat accumulation. The thermal diffusion model fits well for single-mode waveguides with the exception of multi-mode waveguides.

Conceptual design involves identification of required functions of the intended design, generation of concepts to fulfill these functions, and evaluation of these concepts to select the most promising ones for further development. The focus of this paper is the second phase-concept generation, in which a challenge has been to develop possible physical embodiments to offer designers for exploration and evaluation. This paper investigates the issue of how to transform and thus synthesise possible generic physical embodiments and reports an implemented method that could automatically generate these embodiments. In this paper, a method is proposed to transform a variety of possible initial solutions to a design problem into a set of physical solutions that are described in terms of abstraction of mechanical movements. The underlying principle of this method is to make it possible to link common attributes between a specific abstract representation and its possible physical objects. For a given input, this method can produce a set of concepts in terms of their generic physical embodiments. The method can be used to support designers to start with a given input-output function and systematically search for physical objects for design consideration in terms of simplified functional, spatial, and mechanical movement requirements.

The handloom sector constitutes a distinct feature of the rich cultural heritage of India and plays a vital role in the economy and cultural identity of the country. It is an ancient industry and is source of livelihood for many villages in India. Its spread varies in style, practice and scale throughout the country - in certain regions it is has a proficient industry, while in others its establishment is localized, where it is a family-based activity. While, hand-woven fabrics are well-sought after both nationally and globally, weavers currently remain marginalized and often impoverished. The well-set power loom industry has further added to their woes. Given the progressive failure of centralized production and distribution ideologies, handlooms represent a decentralized distributed means of livelihood security, environmental consonance, employment generation, skill enhancement, cultural (diversity, identity and) integrity and sustainability. The fabrics and dyes used in the handloom industry are environment-friendly and often unique to a region (based on available skill and resources). The paper comprehensively evaluates and forecasts sustainability in the context of traditional handlooms in India. Results of the study and recommendations are presented in this paper.

Development of barrier materials for organic device encapsulation is of key interest for the commercialization of organic electronics. In this work, we have fabricated barrier films with ultralow water vapor permeabilities by reactive layer-by-layer approach. Using this technique, alternative layers of polyethylene imine and stearic acid were covalently bonded on a Surlyn film. The roughness, transparency and thickness of the films were determined by atomic force microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Water vapor transmission rates through these films and the ability of these films to protect the organic photovoltaic devices was investigated. The films with covalently assembled bilayers exhibited lower water vapor transmission rates and maintained higher organic photovoltaic device efficiencies compared to the neat Surlyn film.

A simple method employing an optical probe is presented to measure density variations in a hypersonic flow obstructed by a test model in a typical shock tunnel. The probe has a plane light wave trans-illuminating the flow and casting a shadow of a random dot pattern. Local slopes of the distorted wavefront are obtained from shifts of the dots in the pattern. Local shifts in the dots are accurately measured by cross-correlating local shifted shadows with the corresponding unshifted originals. The measured slopes are suitably unwrapped by using a discrete cosine transform based phase unwrapping procedure and also through iterative procedures. The unwrapped phase information is used in an iterative scheme for a full quantitative recovery of density distribution in the shock around the model through refraction tomographic inversion. Hypersonic flow field parameters around a missile shaped body at a free-stream Mach number of 5.8 measured using this technique are compared with the numerically estimated values. The drying of sessile, nano-silica laden water droplet is studied under ambient conditions, in the absence of any convection. The drying process can be divided into two distinct regimes. During regime 1, the outer edge of the droplet remains pinned and particles agglomerate at the droplet periphery similar to the traditional coffee ring. However in regime 2, with further evaporation, both the liquid contact line and the agglomeration front starts moving radially inwards from the initial contact edge. The contact between the liquid and the agglomerate is maintained throughout regime 2 and the vaporisation driven liquid edge recession essentially drives the inward growth of the particle deposition. Fast kinetics of particle aggregation results in rapid growth of this agglomeration front as seen from the experiments. A theoretical formulation involving a simplistic model of the agglomeration front growth based on particle mass balance has been proposed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved,

In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics of thermally developing magnetohydroclynamic flow of nanofluid through microchannel are delineated by following a semi analytical approach. The combined influences of pressure driven flow, electroosmotic transport and magnetic field is taken into account for the analysis of the complex microscale thermal transport processes. Solutions for the normalized temperature distributions and the Nusselt number variations, considering the simultaneous interplay of electrokinetic effects (electroosmosis), magnetic effects, Joule heating and viscous dissipation are obtained, for constant wall temperature condition. Particular attention is paid to assess the role of nanolluids in altering the transport phenomena, through variations in the effective nanoparticle volume fractions, as well as the aggregate structure of the particulate phases. It is observed that magnetohydrodynamic effect reduces advective transport of the liquid resulting in gradual reduction of heat transfer. Increase in nanoparticle volume fraction shows decrease in heat transfer. Similar effects are observed with increase in aggregate sizes of the nanoparticles. The effect of the nanofluids on system irreversibility is also studied through entropy generation analysis due to flow and heat transfer in the microchannel. Total entropy generation is found to be dominant at the thermally developing region of the microchannel, whereas it drops sharply at the thermally developed region. Presence of nanoparticles in the base fluid reduces the total entropy generation in the microchannel, thereby indicating decrease in thermodynamic irreversibility with increasing nanoparticle volume fraction. Eu2+ ion doped into a suitable host results in an efficient luminophore with engineering relevance; however stabilizing this ion in a host is known to be a challenge. Here we report a novel approach for the synthesis of efficient CaAl2O4 phosphor containing Eu2+ luminophore and Cr3+ activator. CaAl2O4:Eu2+, Cr3+ is prepared by a solution combustion (SCS) method using (i) urea, (ii) oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) and (iii) fuel-blend (in which overall fuel to oxidizer ratio (F/O) = 1). A Multi-channel thermocouple setup is used to measure the flame temperatures to study the nature of combustion of various fuel mixtures. The variation of adiabatic flame temperature is calculated theoretically for different urea/ODH mixture ratios according to thermodynamic concept and correlated with the observed flame temperatures. Blue emission of the CaAl2O4:Eu2+ phosphor is enhanced similar to 20 times using the fuel-blend approach. Using the observed reaction kinetics, and the known chemistry of smoldering type combustion, a mechanism is proposed for the observed stabilization of Eu2+ ion in the fuel-blend case. This also explains the observed improvement in blue light emission. We show that the right choice of the fuel ratio is essential for enhancing photoluminescence (PL) emission. The PL intensity is highest for ODH lean and urea rich combination (i.e. when the ratio of ODH:urea is 1:5); measured color purity is comparable to commercial blue phosphor, BAM:Eu2+. Monte Carlo simulation methods involving splitting of Markov chains have been used in evaluation of multi-fold integrals in different application areas. We examine in this paper the performance of these methods in the context of evaluation of reliability integrals from the point of view of characterizing the sampling fluctuations. The methods discussed include the Au-Beck subset simulation, Holmes-Diaconis-Ross method, and generalized splitting algorithm. A few improvisations based on first order reliability method are suggested to select algorithmic parameters of the latter two methods. The bias and sampling variance of the alternative estimators are discussed. Also, an approximation to the sampling distribution of some of these estimators is obtained. Illustrative examples involving component and series system reliability analyses are presented with a view to bring out the relative merits of alternative methods. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. It has been 20 years since the concept of supramolecular synthon was introduced with the purpose of rational supramolecular synthesis. While this concept has been greatly successful in employing a retrosynthetic approach in crystal engineering, the past few years have seen a continuous evolution of supramolecular synthons from being a synthetic subunit to a basic unit for understanding the dynamics of crystallization. This review attempts to give a glimpse of such developments.
