Bent-core mesogens are an important class of thermotropic liquid crystals as they exhibit unusual properties as well as morphologies distinctly different from rodlike mesogens. Two bent-core mesogens with differing center rings namely benzene and thiophene are considered and investigated using high-resolution oriented solid state C-13 NMR method in their liquid crystalline phases. The mesogens exhibit different phase sequences with the benzene-based mesogen showing a B-1 phase, while the one based on thiophene showing nematic and smectic C phases. The 2-dimensional separated local field (2D-SLF) NMR method was used to obtain the C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings of carbons in the center ring as well as in the side-wing phenyl rings. Couplings, characteristic of the type of the center ring, that also provide orientational information on the molecule in the magnetic field were observed. Together with the dipolar couplings of the side-wing phenyl ring carbons from which the local order parameters of the different subunits of the core could be extracted, the bent angle of the mesogenic molecule could be obtained. Accordingly, for the benzene mesogen in its B-1 phase at 145 degrees C, the center ring methine C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings were found to be significantly larger (9.5-10.2 kHz) compared to those of the side-wing rings (1.6-2.1 kHz). From the local order parameter values of the center (0.68) as well as the side-wing rings (0.50), a bent-angle of 130.3 degrees for this mesogen was obtained. Interestingly, for the thiophene mesogen in its smectic C phase at 210 degrees C, the C-13-H-1 dipolar coupling of the center ring methine carbon (2.11 kHz) is smaller than those of the side-wing phenyl ring carbons (2.75-3.00 kHz) which is a consequence of the different structures of the thiophene and the benzene rings. These values correspond to local order parameters of 0.85 for the center thiophene ring and 0.76 for the first side-wing phenyl ring and a bent-angle of 149.2 degrees. Thus, the significant differences in the dipolar couplings and the order parameter values between different parts in the rigid core of the mesogens are a direct consequence of the nature of the center ring and the bent structure of the molecule. The present investigation thus highlights the ability of the C-13 2D-SLF technique to provide the geometry of the bent-core mesogens in a straightforward manner through the measurement of the C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings.

Algae grown in outdoor reactors (volume: 10 L and depth: 20 cm) were fed directly with filtered and sterilised municipal wastewater. The nutrient removal efficiencies were 86%, 90%, 89%, 70% and 76% for TOC, TN, NH4-N, TP and OP, respectively, and lipid content varied from 18% to 28.5% of dry algal biomass. Biomass productivity of similar to 122 mg/l/d (surface productivity 24.4 g/m(2)/d) and lipid productivity of similar to 32 mg/l/d were recorded. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) showed a higher content of desirable fatty acids (bearing biofuel properties) with major contributions from saturates such as palmitic acid C16:0; similar to 40%] and stearic acid C18:0; similar to 34%], followed by unsaturates such as oleic acid C18:1(9); similar to 10%] and linoleic acid C18:2(9,12); similar to 5%]. The decomposition of algal biomass and reactor residues with an exothermic heat content of 123.4 J/g provides the scope for further energy derivation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Close-packed helices with mixed hydrogen bond directionality are unprecedented in the structural chemistry of alpha-polypeptides. While NMR studies in solution state provide strong evidence for the occurrence of mixed helices in (beta beta)(n) and (alpha beta)(n) sequences, limited information is currently available in crystals. The peptide structures presented show the occurrence of C-11/C-9 helices in (alpha beta)(n) peptides. Transitions between C-11 and C-11/C-9 helices are observed upon varying the alpha-amino acid residue.

A lithium-ion hybrid capacitor comprising of a battery type multi-component olivine (LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3PO4) cathode and a capacitive type carbon negative electrode is reported. Olivine phosphate synthesized with chelating agent's polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or triethanolamine (TEA) showed uniform carbon coating through in-situ process exhibiting a surface area 5.1 m(2)/g with porosity 0.02 cm(3)/g. The surface area for commercial carbon electrode was observed to be 1450 m(2)/g with high porosity 0.76 cm(3)/g. Galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling tests were conducted in the coin cells, olivine vs. Li, offering a cell voltage of 4.75 V vs. Li with a maximum specific capacitance of 125 F/g. In the case of olivine vs. carbon in a lithium-ion hybrid device delivered a high discharge capacitance of 86 F/g at a specific current of 0.12 A/g with a cycling retention of 53 F/g (38% loss) after 250 cycles. The obtained performance of PVP synthesized olivine material is manifested to uniform carbon coating and the trapped organic products that provide pathways for facile electrochemical reactions than their TEA counterparts.

Three new molecular compounds, Ni-5(bta)(6)(CO)(4)], I, Ni-9(bta)(12)(CO)(6)], II, Ni-9(bta)(12)(CO)(6)]. 2(C3H7NO), III, (bta = benzotriazole) were prepared employing solvothermal reactions. Of these, I have pentanuclear nickel, whereas II and III have nonanuclear nickel species. The structures are formed by the connectivity between the nickel and benzotriazole giving rise to the 5- and 9-membered nickel clusters. The structures are stabilised by extensive pi aEuro broken vertical bar pi and C-H... pi interactions. Compound II and III are solvotamorphs as they have the same 9-membered nickel clusters and have different solvent molecules. To the best of our knowledge, the compounds I-III represent the first examples of the same transition element existing in two distinct coordination environment in this class of compounds. The studies reveal that compound I is reactive and could be an intermediate in the preparation of II and III. Thermal studies indicate that the compounds are stable upto 350(a similar to)C and at higher temperatures (similar to 800(a similar to)C) the compounds decompose into NiO. Magnetic studies reveal that II is anti-ferromagnetic.

InGaN epitaxial films were grown on GaN template by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The composition of indium incorporation in single phase InGaN film was found to be 23%. The band gap energy of single phase InGaN was found to be similar to 2.48 eV: The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of InGaN/GaN heterojunction was found to be rectifying behavior which shows the presence of Schottky barrier at the interface. Log-log plot of the I-V characteristics under forward bias indicates the current conduction mechanism is dominated by space charge limited current mechanism at higher applied voltage, which is usually caused due to the presence of trapping centers. The room temperature barrier height and the ideality factor of the Schottky junction were found to 0.76 eV and 4.9 respectively. The non-ideality of the Schottky junction may be due to the presence of high pit density and dislocation density in InGaN film. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Solvent effects play a vital role in various chemical, physical, and biological processes. To gain a fundamental understanding of the solute-solvent interactions and their implications on the energy level re-ordering and structure, UV-VIS absorption, resonance Raman spectroscopic, and density functional theory calculation studies on 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) in different solvents of diverse solvent polarity has been carried out. The solvatochromic analysis of the absorption spectra of PQ in protic dipolar solvents suggests that the longest (1n-pi(1)*; S-1 state) and the shorter (1 pi-pi(1)*; S-2 state) wavelength band undergoes a hypsochromic and bathochromic shift due to intermolecular hydrogen bond weakening and strengthening, respectively. It also indicates that hydrogen bonding plays a major role in the differential solvation of the S-2 state relative to the ground state. Raman excitation profiles of PQ (400-1800 cm(-1)) in various solvents followed their corresponding absorption spectra therefore the enhancements on resonant excitation are from single-state rather than mixed states. The hyperchromism of the longer wavelength band is attributed to intensity borrowing from the nearby allowed electronic transition through vibronic coupling. Computational calculation with C-2 nu symmetry constraint on the S-2 state resulted in an imaginary frequency along the low-frequency out-of-plane torsional modes involving the C=O site and therefore, we hypothesize that this mode could be involved in the vibronic coupling. This work reports a detailed temperature dependent Raman study on the mixed crystals of K-0.9(NH4)(0.1)H2AsO4 (KADA) from 5K to 300K in the spectral range of 60-1200cm(-1), covering tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition accompanied by paraelectric to ferroelectric transition at T-c* similar to 60K. Multiple phase transitions below transition temperature (Tc* similar to 60K) are marked by the appearance of new modes, splitting of existing ones as well as anomalies in the self-energy parameters (i.e. mode frequencies and damping coefficient) of the phonon modes. Temperature independent behaviour of damping coefficient and abrupt jump in the mode frequency of some of the internal vibrations of AsO4 tetrahedra as well as external vibrations clearly signal long range ferroelectric ordering and proton ordering below T-c*. In addition, we observed that temperature dependence of many prominent phonon modes diverges significantly from their normal anharmonic behaviour below T-c* suggesting potential coupling between pseudospins and phonons. The photochemistry of aromatic ketones plays a key role in various physicochemical and biological processes, and solvent polarity can be used to tune their triplet state properties. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis of the conformational structure and the solvent polarity induced energy level reordering of the two lowest triplet states of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) was carried out using nanosecond-time-resolved absorption (ns-TRA), time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy, and time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) studies. The ns-TRA of PQ in acetonitrile displays two bands in the visible range, and these two bands decay with similar lifetime at least at longer time scales (mu s). Interestingly, TR3 spectra of these two bands indicate that the kinetics are different at shorter time scales (ns), while at longer time scales they followed the kinetics of ns-TRA spectra. Therefore, we report a real-time observation of the thermal equilibrium between the two lowest triplet excited states of PQ assigned to n pi* and pi pi* of which the pi pi* triplet state is formed first through intersystem crossing. Despite the fact that these two states are energetically close and have a similar conformational structure supported by TD-DFT studies, the slow internal conversion (similar to 2 ns) between the T-2(1(3)n pi*) and T-1(1(3)pi pi*) triplet states indicates a barrier. Insights from the singlet excited states of PQ in protic solvents J. Chem. Phys. 2015, 142, 24305] suggest that the lowest n pi* and pi pi* triplet states should undergo hydrogen bond weakening and strengthening, respectively, relative to the ground state, and these mechanisms are substantiated by TD-DFT calculations. We also hypothesize that the different hydrogen bonding mechanisms exhibited by the two lowest singlet and triplet excited states of PQ could influence its ISC mechanism.

Melt spun ribbons of Fe95-x Zr (x) B4Cu1 with x = 7 (Z7B4) and 9 (Z9B4) alloys have been prepared, and their structure and magnetic properties have been evaluated using XRD, DSC, TEM, VSM, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The glass forming ability (GFA) of both alloys has been calculated theoretically using thermodynamical parameters, and Z9B4 alloy is found to possess higher GFA than that of Z7B4 alloy which is validated by XRD results. On annealing, the amorphous Z7B4 ribbon crystallizes into nanocrystalline alpha-Fe, whereas amorphous Z9B4 ribbon shows two-stage crystallization process, first partially to bcc solid solution which is then transformed to nanocrystalline alpha-Fe and Fe2Zr phases exhibiting bimodal distribution. A detailed phase analysis using Mossbauer spectroscopy through hyperfine field distribution of phases has been carried out to understand the crystallization behavior of Z7B4 and Z9B4 alloy ribbons. In order to understand the phase transformation behavior of Z7B4 and Z9B4 ribbons, molar Gibbs free energies of amorphous, alpha-Fe, and Fe2Zr phases have been evaluated. It is found that in case of Z7B4, alpha-Fe is always a stable phase, whereas Fe2Zr is stable at higher temperature for Z9B4. (C) The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2015

Nanomaterials-based enzyme mimetics (nanozymes) have attracted considerable interest due to their applications in imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutic treatments. Particularly, metal-oxide nanozymes have been shown to mimic the interesting redox properties and biological activities of metalloenzymes. Here we describe an efficient synthesis of MnFe2O4 nanomaterials and show how the morphology can be controlled by using a simple co-precipitation method. The nanomaterials prepared by this method exhibit a remarkable oxidase-like activity. Interestingly, the activity is morphology-dependent, with nanooctahedra (NOh) exhibiting a catalytic efficiency of 2.21 x 10(9) M-1 s(-1), the highest activity ever reported for a nanozyme.
