The crystal structures of two oligopeptides containing di-n-propylglycine (Dpg) residues, Boc-Gly-Dpg-Gly-Leu-OMe (1) and Boc-Val-Ala-Leu-Dpg-Val-Ala-Leu-Val-Ala-Leu-Dpg-Val-Ala-Leu-OMe (2) are presented. Peptide 1 adopts a type I' beta-turn conformation with Dpg(2)-Gly(3) at the corner positions. The 14-residue peptide 2 crystallizes with two molecules in the asymmetric unit, both of which adopt alpha-helical conformations stabilized by 11 successive 5 -> 1 hydrogen bonds. In addition, a single 4 -> 1 hydrogen bond is also observed at the N-terminus. All live Dpg residues adopt backbone torsion angles (phi, psi) in the helical region of conformational space. Evaluation of the available structural data on Dpg peptides confirm the correlation between backbone bond angle N-C-alpha-C' (tau) and the observed backbone phi,psi values. For tau > 106 degrees, helices are observed, while fully extended structures are characterized by tau < 106 degrees. The mean r values for extended and folded conformations for the Dpg residue are 103.6 degrees +/- 1.7 degrees and 109.9 degrees +/- 2.6 degrees, respectively. The recombination properties of cobalt centers in p-type germanium containing cobalt in the concentration range 1014 to 1016 atoms/cm3 have been investigated. The measurement of lifetime has been carried out by steady-state photoconductivity and photo-magneto-electric methods in the temperature range 145 to 300°K. The cross-sections Sno (electron capture cross-section at neutral centers). Sn- (electron capture cross-section at singly negatively charged centers) and their temperature variations have been estimated by the analysis of the lifetime data on the basis of Sah-Shockley's multi-level formula. The value of Sno is (15±5).10-16 cm2 and is temperature independent. The value of Sn- is ≈4·10-16 cm2 around 225°K and it increases with increase of temperature. The possible mechanisms for capture at neutral and repulsive centers are discussed and a summary of the capture cross-sections for cobalt centers is given. A comparison of the cross-section values of cobalt and their temperature variations with those of the related impurities-manganese, iron and nickel-in germanium has been made.

Background & objectives: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a critical enzyme in folate metabolism and involved in DNA synthesis, DNA repair and DNA methylation. The two common functional polymorphisms of MTHFR, 677C -> T and 1298 A -> C have shown to impact several diseases including cancer. This case-control study was undertaken to analyse the association of the MTHFR gene polymorphisms 677 C -> T and 1298 A -> C and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC).Methods: One hundred patients with a confirmed histopathologic diagnosis of CRC and 86 age and gender matched controls with no history of cancer were taken for this study. DNA was isolated from peripheral blood samples and the genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP. The risk association was estimated by compounding odds ratio (OR) with 95 per cent confidence interval (CI). Results: Genotype frequency of MTHFR 677 CC, CT and TT were 76.7, 22.1 and 1.16 per cent in controls, and 74,25 and 1.0 per cent among patients. The 'T' allele frequency was 12.21 and 13.5 per cent in controls and patients respectively. The genotype frequency of MTHFR 1298 AA, AC, and CC were 25.6, 58.1 and 16.3 per cent for controls and 22, 70 and 8 per cent for patents respectively. The 'C' allele frequency for 1298 A -> C was 43.0 and 45.3 per cent respectively for controls and patients. The OR for 677 CT was 1.18 (95% CI 0.59-2.32, P = 0.642), OR for 1298 AC was 1.68 (95% CI 0.92-3.08, P = 0.092) and OR for 1298 CC was 0.45(95% CI 0.18-1.12, P = 0.081). The OR for the combined heterozygous state (677 CT and 1298 AC) was 1.18(95% CI 0.52-2.64, P =0.697).Interpretation & conclusion: The frequency of the MTHFR 677 TT genotype is rare as compared to 1298 CC genotype in the population studied. There was no association between 677 C -> T and 1298 A -> C polymorphisms and risk of CRC either individually or in combination. The homozygous state for 1298 A -> C polymorphism appears to slightly lower risk of CRC. This needs to be confirmed with a larger sample size.

This communication describes the voltage‐current characteristics in the breakdown region of pn junctions made on polycrystalline silicon of large grain size. The observed soft breakdown characteristics have been explained by taking into account the effect of curvature of the junction near the grain boundaries.

The charge-transfer complexes of p-dichlorobenzene (PDB) with some aromatic π acceptors such as m-nitrobenzaldehyde (MNB), picric acid (PA), p-nitrobenzoic acid (PNB), and m-dinitrobenzene (MDNB) were prepared by slowly adding the acceptor to the molten donor and then cooling the mass to 15°C. The NQR frequencies of these complexes were measured at room temperature. Contrary to the theoretical prediction, the NQR shift is positive, indicating that the NQR shift in donor-acceptor complexes is indirectly related to the charge-transfer interaction. Bond properties are discussed in terms of frequency shift.

Silver iodide-based fast ion conducting glasses containing silver phosphate and silver borate have been studied. An attempt is made to identify the interaction between anions by studying the chemical shifts of31P and11B atoms in high resolution (HR) magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra. Variation in the chemical shifts of31P or11B has been observed which is attributed to the change in the partial charge on the31P or11B. This is indicative of the change in the electronegativity of the anion matrix as a whole. This in turn is interpreted as due to significant interaction among anions. The significance of such interaction to the concept of structural unpinning of silver ions in fast ion conducting glasses is discussed.

KO2 is a molecular solid consisting of oxygen dimers. K present in the lattice donates an electron which goes on to occupy the O p levels. As the basic electronic structure is similar to that of an oxygen molecule, except for broadening due to solid state effects, KO2 represents the realization of the doping of oxygen molecules arranged in a lattice. These considerations alone result in magnetism with high ordering temperatures as our calculations reveal. However, we find that the high temperature structure is unstable to an orbital ordering (OO) transition. The microscopic considerations driving the OO transition, however, are electrostatic interactions instead of the often encountered superexchange driven ordering within the Kugel-Khomskii model often used to describe the OO. This OO transition is also found to preclude any possibility of high magnetic ordering temperatures, which otherwise seemed possible.

The cloned DNA fragment of the cytochrome P-450b/e gene containing the upstream region from position -179 through part of the first exon is faithfully transcribed in freeze-thawed rat liver nuclei. Phenobarbitone treatment of the animal strikingly increases this transcription, and the increase is blocked by cycloheximide (protein synthesis inhibitor) or CoCl2 (heme biosynthetic inhibitor) treatment of animals. This picture correlates very well with the reported cytochrome P-450b/e mRNA levels in vivo and run-on transcription rates in vitro under these conditions. The upstream region (from position -179) was assessed for protein binding with nuclear extracts by nitrocellulose filter binding, gel retardation, DNase I treatment ("footprinting"), and Western blot analysis. Phenobarbitone treatment dramatically increases protein binding to the upstream region, an increase once again blocked by cycloheximide or CoCl2 treatments. Addition of heme in vitro to heme-deficient nuclei and nuclear extracts restores the induced levels of transcription and protein binding to the upstream fragment, respectively. Thus, drug-mediated synthesis and heme-modulated binding of a transcription factor(s) appear involved in the transcriptional activation of the cytochrome P-450b/e genes, and an 85-kDa protein may be a major factor in this regard.
