We report the surface laser damage threshold in sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, a nonlinear optical crystal. The experiment is performed with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser in TEM00 mode. The single shot damage thresholds are 11.16 +/- 0.28GWcm(-2) and 1.25 +/- 0.02GWcm(-2) for 1064 nm and 532 nm laser wavelengths respectively. A close correlation between the laser damage threshold and mechanical hardness is observed. A possible mechanism of laser damage is discussed.

The phosphoprotein P of paramyxoviruses is known to play more than one role in genome transcription and replication. Phosphorylation of P at the NH2 terminus by cellular casein kinase II has been shown to be necessary for transcription of the genome in some of the viruses, while it is dispensable for replication. The phosphorylation null mutant of rinderpest virus P protein, in which three serine residues have been mutated, has been shown earlier to be non-functional in an in vivo minigenome replication/transcription system. In this work, we have shown that the phosphorylation of P protein is essential for transcription, whereas the null mutant is active in replication of the genome in vivo. The null mutant P acts as a transdominant repressor of transcriptional activity of wild-type P and as an activator of replication carried out by wild-type P protein. These results suggest the phosphorylation status of P may act as a replication switch during virus replication. We also show that the phosphorylation null mutant P is capable of interacting with L and N proteins and is able to form a tripartite complex of L-(N-P) when expressed in insect cells, similar to wild-type P protein.

The photolytic and photocatalytic degradation of the copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl methacrylate) (MMABMA), poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (MMAEA) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) (MMAMAA) have been carried out in solution in the presence of solution combustion synthesized TiO2 (CS TiO2) and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 (DP 25). The degradation rates of the copolymers were compared with the respective homopolymers. The copolymers and the homopolymers degraded randomly along the chain. The degradation rate was determined using continuous distribution kinetics. For all the polymers, CS TiO2 exhibited superior photo-activity compared to the uncatalysed and DP 25 systems, owing to its high surface hydroxyl content and high specific surface area. The time evolution of the hydroxyl and hydroperoxide stretching vibration in the Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectra of the copolymers indicated that the degradation rate follows the order MMAMAA > MMAEA > MMABMA. The same order is observed for the rate coefficients of photocatalytic degradation. The photodegradation rate coefficients were compared with the activation energy of pyrolytic degradation. In degradation by pyrolysis, it was observed that MMABMA was the least stable followed by MMAEA and MMAMAA. The observed contrast in the order of thermal stability compared to the photo-stability of these copolymers was attributed to the two different mechanisms governing the scission of the polymer and the evolution of the products.

Sol-gel derived PbZrO3 (PZ) thin films have been deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate and according to the pseudotetragonal symmetry of PZ, the relatively preferred (110)t oriented phase formation has been noticed. The room temperature PE hysteresis loops have been observed to be slim by nature. The slim hysteresis loops are attributed to the [110]t directional antiparallel lattice motion of Pb ions and by the directionality of the applied electric field. Pure PZ formation has been characterized by the dielectric phase transition at 235C and antiferroelectric PE hysteresis loops at room temperature. Dielectric response has been characterized within a frequency domain of 100Hz1MHz at various temperatures ranging from 40to350C. Though frequency dispersion of dielectric behaves like a MaxwellWagner type of relaxation, 2 dependency of ac conductivity indicates that there must be GC equivalent circuit dominance at high frequency. The presence of trap charges in PZ has been determined by Arrhenius plots of ac conductivity. The temperature dependent n (calculated from the universal power law of ac conductivity) values indicate an anomalous behavior of the trapped charges. This anomaly has been explained by strongly and weakly correlated potential wells of trapped charges and their behavior on thermal activation. The dominance of circuitcircuits resembling MaxwellWagner type has been investigated by logarithmic Nyquist plots at various temperatures and it has been justified that the dielectric dispersion is not from the actual MaxwellWagner-type response.

We report magnetic trapping of Yb in the excited P-3(2) state. This state, with a lifetime of 15 s, could play an important role in studies ranging from optical clocks and quantum computation to the search for a permanent electric dipole moment. Yb atoms are first cooled and trapped in the ground state in a 399-nm magneto-optic trap. The cold atoms are then pumped into the excited state by driving the S-1(0) -> P-3(1) -> S-3(1) transition. Atoms in the P-3(2) state are magnetically trapped in a spherical quadrupole field with an axial gradient of 110 G/cm. We trap up to 10(6) atoms with a lifetime of 1.5 s.

The vapor-phase dehydrogenation of 1 -butanol to butyraldehyde was studied in a fixed bed of catalyst from 250 to 360 C. Of all the catalysts studied during preliminary investigation, the one containing 90% copper, 8% chromia, and 2% carbon supported on pumice was best, with high activity and selectivity. The data are expressed in the form of a first-order irreversible reaction rate equation. Single-site surface reaction (hydrogen adsorbed) is the rate-controlling mechanism at all the temperatures studied. The rate data obtained in the entire range of experimental conditions fit the rate equation based on this mechanism with a standard deviation of 22.8%.

The recombination properties of cobalt centers in p-type germanium containing cobalt in the concentration range 1014 to 1016 atoms/cm3 have been investigated. The measurement of lifetime has been carried out by steady-state photoconductivity and photo-magneto-electric methods in the temperature range 145 to 300K. The cross-sections Sno (electron capture cross-section at neutral centers). Sn- (electron capture cross-section at singly negatively charged centers) and their temperature variations have been estimated by the analysis of the lifetime data on the basis of Sah-Shockley's multi-level formula. The value of Sno is (155).10-16 cm2 and is temperature independent. The value of Sn- is 410-16 cm2 around 225K and it increases with increase of temperature. The possible mechanisms for capture at neutral and repulsive centers are discussed and a summary of the capture cross-sections for cobalt centers is given. A comparison of the cross-section values of cobalt and their temperature variations with those of the related impurities-manganese, iron and nickel-in germanium has been made.

The Raman spectra of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol and n-butyl alcohol have been recorded using 2537 excitation. 35, 49, 45 and 51 Raman lines respectively have been identified in the spectra of these alcohols, in addition to the rotational 'wings'. In each case, a large number of additional lines have been recorded. The existence of Raman lines with frequency shifts greater than 3800 cm.-1, first reported by Bolla in the spectrum of ethyl alcohol, has been confirmed. Similar high-frequency shift Raman lines have also been recorded in the spectrum of methyl alcohol. They have been assigned as combinations. Proper assignments have been given for the prominent Raman lines appearing in the spectra of these alcohols.
