Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are fascinating systems exhibiting many novel physical properties. In this paper, we give a brief review of the structural, electronic, vibrational, and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes. In situ resonance Raman scattering of SWNTs investigated under electrochemical biasing demonstrates that the intensity of the radial breathing mode varies significantly in a nonmonotonic manner as a function of the cathodic bias voltage, but does not change appreciably under anodic bias. These results can be quantitatively understood in terms of the changes in the energy gaps between the 1 D van Hove singularities in the electron density of states, arising possibly due to the alterations in the overlap integral of pi bonds between the p-orbitals of the adjacent carbon atoms. In the second part of this paper, we review our high-pressure X-ray diffraction results, which show that the triangular lattice of the carbon nanotube bundles continues to persist up to similar to10 GPa. The lattice is seen to relax just before the phase transformation, which is observed at similar to10 GPa. Further, our results display the reversibility of the 2D lattice symmetry even after compression up to 13 GPa well beyond the 5 GPa value observed recently. These experimental results explicitly validate the predicted remarkable mechanical resilience of the nanotubes.

We report high-pressure Raman, infrared (IR), and optical-absorption spectra of alpha-ZrMo2O8 (trigonal) up to 38 GPa at room temperature. The spectroscopic studies are consistent with diffraction results that show that alpha-ZrMo2O8 transforms into delta-ZrMo2O8 (monoclinic) at about 1 GPa and the delta phase converts to the epsilon phase (trielinic) at about 2.0 GPa. Optical-absorption measurements give an estimate of the band gap of about 0.6 eV at the lowest pressure. Band-gap changes with pressure are confirmed with visual observations. ZrMo2O8 changes from transparent at 5 GPa to yellow at 10 GPa, red at 18 GPa, and at about 30 GPa it becomes opaque.

The influence of powder processing and sintering temperature on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics was studied. The as-dried, calcined and processed HAp powders were uniaxially compacted and sintered at various temperatures (1000-1400 degreesC) for 3 h. The as-dried and processed powders, attained 97% of theoretical density (TD) at 1100 degreesC) at higher sintering temperatures, the density of the as-dried powder compact was found to decrease. A uniform microstructure with fine grain size (2.3 pm) was observed for material obtained from processed powder, whereas exaggerated grain growth with closed pores were observed in as-dried and unprocessed powder compacts. The Vickers' hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength of HAp were determined and a maximum value of 6.3 GPa and 0.88 MPam(1/2) and 60.3 MPa, respectively were obtained for processed compact. The processing of HAp has improved its densification, microstructure homogeneity and mechanical properties. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Aluminium nitride (AlN)-Al matrices reinforced with Al2O3 particulate have been fabricated by reactive infiltration of Al-2% Mg alloy into Al2O3 preforms in N-2 in the temperature range of 900-1075 degreesC. The growth of composites of useful thickness was facilitated by the presence of a Mg-rich external getter, in the absence of which composite growth is self-limiting and terminates prematurely. Successful growth of composites has been attributed to the reduction in residual oxygen partial pressure brought about by the reaction with oxygen of highly volatile Mg in the getter alloy. The microstructure of the matrix consists of AlN-rich regions contiguous with the particulate with metal-rich channels in-between, thereby suggesting that nitridation initiates by preferential wicking of alloy along the particle surfaces. The increase in nitride content of the matrix with temperature is consistent with hardness values that vary between similar to3 and 10 GPa. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Structural, optical and nanomechanical properties of nanocrystalline Zinc Telluride (ZnTe) films of thickness upto 10 microns deposited at room temperature on borosilicate glass substrates are reported. X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that the films were preferentially oriented along the (1 1 1) direction. The maximum refractive index of the films was 2.74 at a wavelength of 2000 nm. The optical band gap showed strong thickness dependence. The average film hardness and Young's modulus obtained from load-displacement curves and analyzed by Oliver-Pharr method were 4 and 70 GPa respectively. Hardness of (1 1 1) oriented ZnTe thin films exhibited almost 5 times higher value than bulk. The studies show clearly that the hardness increases with decreasing indentation size, for indents between 30 and 300 nm in depth indicating the existence of indentation size effect. The coefficient of friction for these films as obtained from the nanoscratch test was ~0.4.

Using in situ x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering techniques, we have investigated the behaviour of single-walled carbon nanotubes bundles under non-hydrostatic pressures. It is seen that the diffraction line corresponding to the two-dimensional triangular lattice in the bundles is not reversible for pressures beyond 5 GPa, in sharp contrast to earlier results under hydrostatic pressure conditions. Most interestingly, radial breathing and tangential Raman modes of the pressure-cycled samples from 21 and 30 GPa match very well with those of the starting sample. Raman and x-ray results put together clearly suggest that the ordering of tubes in the bundles is only marginally regained with a very short coherence length on decompression.

ZrO2–Al2O3 powders were synthesized by spray pyrolysis. These powders were sintered at 1 GPa in the temperature range of 700–1100 °C. The microstructural evolution and densification are reported in this paper. The application of 1 Gpa pressure lowers the crystallization temperature from ∼850 to <700 °C. Similarly, the transformation temperature under 1 GPa pressure for γ → α–Al2O3 reduces from ∼1100 to 700–800 °C range, and that for t → m ZrO2 reduces from ∼1050 to 700–800 °C range. It was possible to obtain highly dense nanocrystalline ZrO2–Al2O3 composite at temperatures as low as 700 °C. The effect of high pressure on nucleation and transformation of phases is discussed.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by addition of Gallium (Ga) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79 at.%Si and Nb-20.2 at.%Si-2.7 at.%Ga were carried out. The microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mold. It is shown that addition of Ga suppresses Nb(3)Si phase and promotes beta-Nb(5)Si(3) phase. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloys. Compression test shows a strength of 2.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and plasticity of 4.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at.%Si alloy processed under identical conditions exhibit coarser length scale (300-400 nm) and brittle behavior. The fracture toughness of Ga containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 24.11 +/- 0.5 MPa root m representing a major improvement for bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. We present a systematic study to explore the effect of important process variables on the composition and structure of niobium nitride thin films synthesized by Reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition (RPLD) technique through ablation of high purity niobium target in the presence of low pressure nitrogen gas. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry has been used in a unique way to study and fix gas pressure, substrate temperature and laser fluence, in order to obtain optimized conditions for one variable in single experimental run. The x-ray diffraction and electron microscopic characterization have been complemented by proton elastic backscattering spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to understand the incorporation of oxygen and associated non-stoichiometry in the metal to nitrogen ratio. The present study demonstrates that RPLD can be used for obtaining thin film architectures using non-equilibrium processing. Finally the optimized NbN thin films were characterized for their hardness using nano-indentation technique and found to be similar to 30 GPa at the deposition pressure of 8 Pa. Ambient-condition Raman spectra were collected in the strongly correlated NiS(1-x)Se(x) pyrite (0 <= x <= 1.2). Two samples (x = 0 and x = 0.55) were studied as a function of pressure up to 10 GPa, and for the x = 0.55 sample the pressure dependence of the infrared reflectivity was also measured (0-10 GPa). This gave a complete picture of the optical response of that system on approaching the metallic state both by application of pressure and/or by Se alloying, which corresponds to a volume expansion. A peculiar nonmonotonic (V-shaped) volume dependence was found for the quasiparticle spectral weight of both pure and Se-doped compounds. In the x = 0.55 sample the vibrational frequencies of the chalcogen dimer show an anomalous volume dependence on entering the metallic phase. The abrupt softening observed, particularly significant for the Se-Se pair, indicates the relevant role of the softness of the Se-Se bond as previously suggested by theoretical calculations.

Amorphous silicon carbide (a-Si(1-x)C(x)) films were deposited on silicon (100) and quartz substrates by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering of silicon in methane (CH(4))-Argon (Ar) atmosphere. The influence of substrate temperature and target power on the composition, carbon bonding configuration, band gap, refractive index and hardness of a-SiC films has been investigated. Increase in substrate temperature results in slightly decreasing the carbon concentration in the films but favors silicon-carbon (Si-C) bonding. Also lower target powers were favorable towards Si-C bonding. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results agree with the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy results. Increase in substrate temperature resulted in increased hardness of the thin films from 13 to 17 GPa and the corresponding bandgap varied from 2.1 to 1.8 eV. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We report high pressure Raman studies on single crystals of metallic LaB6 upto a pressure of 16.$ GPa. Raman spectra shows three lines at 680 cm(-1) (T-2g), 1120 cm(-1) (E-g) and 1258 cm(-1) (A(1g)), associated with the internal modes of B-6 molecule. The T-2g mode shows an asymmetric Fano line shape, arising from the interference between the phonon line and the electronic continuum. The line is fitted with I(omega) = I-0(q + epsilon(2))/(I + epsilon(2)) where epsilon = (omega - omega(0))/Gamma, omega(0) is the phonon frequency renormalised due to electron-phonon self energy corrections, Tis the width parameter proportional to the square of the matrix element of the electron-phonon interaction potential. The parameter a signifies the strength of interference. Most interestingly our pressure data for the T-2g mode shows a significant change in the slope of the mode frequency with pressure d omega(0)/dP and Gamma at 9.5 GPa. This clearly indicates that LaB6 undergoes a subtle phase transition at 9.5 GPa within the metallic phase.

We report Raman signatures of electronic topological transition (ETT) at 3.6 GPa and rhombohedral (alpha-Bi2Te3) to monoclinic (beta-Bi2Te3) structural transition at similar to 8 GPa. At the onset of ETT, a new Raman mode appears near 107 cm(-1) which is dispersionless with pressure. The structural transition at similar to 8 GPa is marked by a change in pressure derivative of A(1g) and E-g mode frequencies as well as by appearance of new modes near 115 cm(-1) and 135 cm(-1). The mode Grilneisen parameters are determined in both the alpha and beta-phases. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
