Vertical structure and horizontal gradients of aerosol extinction coefficients over coastal India inferred from airborne lidar measurements during the Integrated Campaign for Aerosol, Gases and Radiation Budget (ICARB) field campaign

Quantitative estimates of the vertical structure and the spatial gradients of aerosol extinction coefficients have been made from airborne lidar measurements across the coastline into offshore oceanic regions along the east and west coasts of India. The vertical structure revealed the presence of strong, elevated aerosol layers in the altitude region of similar to 2-4 km, well above the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Horizontal gradients also showed a vertical structure, being sharp with the e(-1) scaling distance (D-0H) as small as similar to 150 km in the well-mixed regions mostly under the influence of local source effects. Above the ABL, where local effects are subdued, the gradients were much shallower (similar to 600-800 km); nevertheless, they were steep compared to the value of similar to 1500-2500 km reported for columnar AOD during winter. The gradients of these elevated layers were steeper over the east coast of India than over the west coast. Near-simultaneous radio sonde (Vaisala, Inc., Finland) ascents made over the northern Bay of Bengal showed the presence of convectively unstable regions, first from surface to similar to 750-1000 m and the other extending from 1750 to 3000 m separated by a stable region in between. These can act as a conduit for the advection of aerosols and favor the transport of continental aerosols in the higher levels (> 2 km) into the oceans without entering the marine boundary layer below. Large spatial gradient in aerosol optical and hence radiative impacts between the coastal landmass and the adjacent oceans within a short distance of < 300 km (even at an altitude of 3 km) during summer and the premonsoon is of significance to the regional climate.

The structure and conformation of a second crystalline modification of 19-nortestosterone has been determined by X-ray methods. M r = 274, monoclinic P2 l, a=9.755(2), b= 11.467(3), c= 14.196(3)/L fl=101.07(2) ° , V=1558.4 (8) A 3, Z=4, Ox= I. 168 g cm -3, Mo Ka, 2 = 0.7107 ,/k, ~ = 0.80 cm -l, F(000) = 600, T= 300 K. R = 0.060 for 2158 observed reflections. The two molecules in the asymmetric unit show significant differences in the A-ring conformation from that of the previously reported form of the title compound [Precigoux, Busetta, Courseille & Hospital (1975). Acta Cryst. B31, 1527-1532]. The l a,2fl-half-chair conformation of the A ring increases its conformational freedom compared with testosterone.

Influence of clofibrate administration on the rate of synthesis of macromolecules in regenerating rat liver

Administration of the antihypercholesterolaemic drug clofibrate stimulates the rates of synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins in rat liver. The biosynthesis of mitochondrial proteins also is enhanced by the drug. In drug-fed animals, the rates of incorporation in vivo of radioactive precursors into DNA, RNA and proteins are stimulated even when the liver undergoes regeneration following partial hepatectomy. The rate of synthesis of mitochondrial proteins in the regenerative phase is higher in clofibrate-fed animals. These effects are consistent with the hepatomegalic and mitochondria-proliferating property of the drug.

Simplified Mathematical Model for Effects of Freezing on the Low-Temperature Performance of the Lead-Acid Battery

Discharge periods of lead-acid batteries are significantly reduced at subzero centigrade temperatures. The reduction is more than what can he expected due to decreased rates of various processes caused by a lowering of temperature and occurs despite the fact that active materials are available for discharge. It is proposed that the major cause for this is the freezing of the electrolyte. The concentration of acid decreases during battery discharge with a consequent increase in the freezing temperature. A battery freezes when the discharge temperature falls below the freezing temperature. A mathematical model is developed for conditions where charge-transfer reaction is the rate-limiting step. and Tafel kinetics are applicable. It is argued that freezing begins from the midplanes of electrodes and proceeds toward the reservoir in-between. Ionic conduction stops when one of the electrodes freezes fully and the time taken to reach that point, namely the discharge period, is calculated. The predictions of the model compare well to observations made at low current density (C/5) and at -20 and -40 degrees C. At higher current densities, however, diffusional resistances become important and a more complicated moving boundary problem needs to be solved to predict the discharge periods. Omega-Hydroxylation of acyclic monoterpene alcohols by rat lung microsomes

Rat lung microsomes were shown to �-hydroxylate acyclic monoterpene alcohols in the presence of NADPH and O2. NADH could neither support hydroxylation efficiently nor did it show synergistic effect. The hydroxylase activity was greater in microsomes prepared from β-naphthoflavone (BNF)-treated rats than from phenobarbital (PB)-treated or control microsomal preparations. Hydroxylation was specific to the C-8 position in geraniol and has a pH optimum of 7.8. The inhibition of the hydroxylase activity by SKF-525A, CO, N-ethylmaleimide, ellipticine, α-naphthoflavone, cyt. Image and p-CMB indicated the involvement of the cyt. P-450 system. However, NaN3 stimulated the hydroxylase activity to a significant level. Rat kidney microsomes were also capable of �-hydroxylating geraniol although the activity was lower than that observed with lungs.

Metabolism of 1,8-Cineole in Rat: Its Effects on Liver and Lung Microsomal Cytochrome P-450 Systems

The monoterpene cyclic ether, cineole (l,8-cineole, I) also known as eucalyptol, is a component of many essential oils and is widely distributed in nature. It is extensively used in pharmaceutical preparations for external application and also as a nasal spray. It was reported earlier that cineole when administered to sheep may be largely oxidized in the system (Scheline 1978). However the mode of metabolism of cineole is not known. Hence the present study was undertaken to investigate the metabolic fate of this ubiquitous terpenoid following its administration to rats by gastric intubation.

The torsion angle about the peptide bond is 3.0 (5) ° and the peptide bond length is 1.313 (5)A. The conformation of the proline ring is Cs-Cf~-endo. The crystal structure is stabilized by C-H... O interactions.

TlCaBa2Cu2O7: The 1122 (90 K) superconductor in the new Tl(Ca,Ba)n+1CunO2n+3 seriesstar, open

The 1122 (n=2) member of the Tl(Ca,Ba)n+1CunO2n+3 series containing a single Tl-O layer is shown to be associated with a Tc of 90 K. This value of Tc is significantly lower than that of the 2122 phase (Tcnot, vert, similar110 K) with two Tl-O layers.

An investigation of bond formation in the weakly bound first excited 1Σ and lowest 3Σ states of HeH+

The role of the electronic kinetic energy and its Cartesian components is examined during the formation of the first excited 1�£ and the lowest 3�£ states of HeH+ employing wavefunctions of multi-configuration type with basis orbitals in elliptic coordinates. Results show that the bond formation in these states is preceded primarily by a charge transfer from H to He+ rather than by polarisation of the H-orbital by He+
