Tungsten incorporated diamond like carbon (W-DLC) nanocomposite thin films with variable fractions of tungsten were deposited by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The influence of tungsten incorporation on the microstructure, surface topography, mechanical and tribological properties of the DLC were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy. Atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests. The amount of W in films gets increases with increasing target bias voltage and most of the incorporated W reacts with carbon to form WC nanoclusters. Using TEM and FFT pattern, it was found that spherical shaped WC nanoclusters were uniformly dispersed in the DLC matrix and attains hexagonal (W2C) crystalline structure at higher W concentration. On the other hand, the incorporation of tungsten led to increase the formation of C-sp(2) hybridized bonding in DLC network and which is reflected in the hardness and elastic modulus of W-DLC films. Moreover, W-DLC films show very low friction coefficient and increased adhesion to the substrate than the DLC film, which could be closely related to its unique nanostructure of the W incorporated thin films. We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of SmCo5/Co exchange coupled nanocomposite thin films grown by magnetron sputtering from Sm and Co multitargets successively. The growth of the films was carried out at elevated substrate temperature followed by in situ annealing. On Si (100) substrate, X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of textured (110) SmCo5 hard phase, whereas on MgO (110) substrate, the diffraction pattern shows the epitaxial growth of SmCo5 phase with crystalline orientation along 100] direction. Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy reveals the structural transformation from multilayered (Sm/Co) to SmCo5/Co nano-composite films due to high reactivity of Sm at elevated temperature. Transmission electron microscopy indicates the existence of nanocrystalline phase of SmCo5 along with unreacted Co. Observed single phase behavior in magnetic hysteresis measurements indicates well exchange coupling between the soft and the hard phases in these nano-composite films. For samples with samarium layer thickness, t(sm)=3.2 nm and cobalt layer thickness, t(Co)= 11.4 nm, the values of (BH)(max) were obtained as 20.1 MGOe and 12.38 MGOe with H-c value similar to 3.0 kOe grown on MgO and Si substrates, respectively.

We demonstrate a nanoparticle loading protocol to develop a transparent, multifunctional polyelectrolyte multilayer film for externally activated drug and protein delivery. The composite film was designed by alternate adsorption of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and dextran sulfate (DS) on a glass substrate followed by nanoparticle synthesis through a polyol reduction method. The films showed a uniform distribution of spherical silver nanoparticles with an average diameter of 50 +/- 20 nm, which increased to 80 +/- 20 nm when the AgNO3 concentration was increased from 25 to 50 mM. The porous and supramolecular structure of the polyelectrolyte multilayer film was used to immobilize ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CH) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) within the polymeric network of the film. When exposed to external triggers such as ultrasonication and laser light the loaded films were ruptured and released the loaded BSA and CH. The release of CH is faster than that of BSA due to a higher diffusion rate. Circular dichroism measurements confirmed that there was no significant change in the conformation of released BSA in comparison with native BSA. The fabricated films showed significant antibacterial activity against the bacterial pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. Applications envisioned for such drug-loaded films include drug and vaccine delivery through the transdermal route, antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory coatings on implants and drug-releasing coatings for stents. We report the ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties of the composite films of lithium tantalate (LT) nanoparticle in poly(vinylidene fluoride) PVDF matrix at different volume fractions of LT (f(LT) = 0.047, 0.09 and 0.17). For an applied electric field of 150 kV cm(-1) the nonvolatile polarization of the composite was observed to increase from 0.014 mu C cm(-2) at f(LT) = 0 to 2.06 mu C cm(-2) at f(LT) = 0.17. For f(LT) = 0.17, the composite films exhibit a saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a remanent polarization (2P(r) = 4.13 mu C cm(-2)). Compared with pure poled PVDF the composite films also showed a factor of about five enhancement in the pyroelectric coefficient at f(LT) = 0.17. When used in energy detection mode the pyroelectric voltage sensitivity of the composite films was found to increase from 3.93 to 18.5 VJ(-1) with an increase in f(LT) from 0.0 to 0.17.

In 2003, Babin et al. theoretically predicted (J. Appl. Phys. 94:4244, 2003) that fabrication of organic-inorganic hybrid materials would probably be required to implement structures with multiple photonic band gaps. In tune with their prediction, we report synthesis of such an inorganic-organic nanocomposite, comprising Cu4O3-CuO-C thin films that experimentally exhibit the highest (of any known material) number (as many as eleven) of photonic band gaps in the near infrared. On contrary to the report by Wang et al. (Appl. Phys. Lett. 84:1629, 2004) that photonic crystals with multiple stop gaps require highly correlated structural arrangement such as multilayers of variable thicknesses, we demonstrate experimental realization of multiple stop gaps in completely randomized structures comprising inorganic oxide nanocrystals (Cu4O3 and CuO) randomly embedded in a randomly porous carbonaceous matrix. We report one step synthesis of such nanostructured films through the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition technique using a single source metalorganic precursor, Cu-4(deaH)(dea)(oAc)(5) a <...aEuro parts per thousand(CH3)(2)CO. The films displaying multiple (4/9/11) photonic band gaps with equal transmission losses in the infrared are promising materials to find applications as multiple channel photonic band gap based filter for WDM technology.

A new, flexible, gas barrier material has been synthesized by exfoliating organically modified nano-clays (MMT) in the blends of Surlyn (PEMA) using a copolymer of vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and demonstrated as a gas barrier material. The materials were characterized by Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) and UV-visible spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile studies. The oxygen and water-vapor permeabilities of the fabricated films were determined by calcium degradation test and a novel permeability setup based on cavity ring down spectroscopy, respectively. Hierarchical simulations of these materials helped us to understand the effect of intermolecular interactions on diffusivities of oxygen and water molecules in these materials. Schottky structured poly(3-hexylthiophene) based organic devices were encapsulated with the fabricated films and aging studies were carried under accelerated conditions. Based on permeability test results and accelerated aging studies, the fabricated PEMA/EVOH/MMT composites were found to be effective in decreasing the permeabilities for gases by about two orders of magnitude and maintaining the lifetime of organic devices.

A reactive polymer nanocomposite system was proposed as an effective water vapor barrier material for organic device encapsulation. Nanosized magnesium oxide (MgO) was synthesized by the solution combustion technique using two different fuels, lactose and alanine. The purity and crystallite size of MgO were determined from X-ray diffraction studies. The surface areas and porosity measurements were used to determine the water adsorption capacities of MgO. Nanocomposites with various concentrations (wt% = 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2.5) of MgO were prepared using Surlyn as the base polymer. The permeation rate of moisture through the fabricated films was calculated using calcium degradation test and these rates were further used to calculate the diffusivities. Accelerated aging experiments were conducted to study the performance of organic photovoltaic devices encapsulated with synthesized films under accelerated weathering conditions. The performance of the barrier materials with synthesized MgO was also compared to that obtained with commercial MgO. The films containing MgO obtained from lactose exhibited better barrier properties compared to other films made with commercial MgO and MgO synthesized using alanine as well as other nanocomposites reported in the literature.

We report the direct observation of electrochemical potential and local transport field variations near scatterers like grain boundaries, triple points, and voids in thin platinum films studied by scanning tunneling potentiometry. The field is highest at a void, followed by a triple point and a grain boundary. The local transport field near a void can even be four orders of magnitude higher than the macroscopic field, indicating that the void is the most likely place for an electromigration induced failure. The field build up for a particular type of scatterer depends on the grain connectivity. We estimate an average grain boundary reflection coefficient for the film from the temperature dependence of its resistivity.

Deposition of good quality thin films of Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LiCoO2), by sputtering is preceded by target conditioning, which dictates the surface composition, morphology and electrochemical performance of the deposited film. Sputtering from a Virgin target surface, results in films with excess of the more reactive elements. The concentration of these reactive elements in the films decreases until the system reaches a steady state after sufficient sputtering from the target. This paper discusses the deposition kinetics in terms of target conditioning of LiCoO2. The composition, morphology and texturing of deposited film during various hours of sputtering were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Field Emission Scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The compositional stability is not observed in the films formed during the initial hours or Sputtering from the fresh target, which becomes stable after several hours of sputtering. The Li and Co concentration in the Films deposited subsequently is found to be varying and possible causes are discussed. After the compositional stability is reached, electrochemical analysis of LiCoO2 thin films was performed, which shows a discharge capacity of 129 mu Ah/cm(2).

Polycrystalline films of SrBi2Nb2O9 were grown using pulsed-laser ablation. The ferroelectric properties were achieved by low-temperature deposition followed by a subsequent annealing process. The lower switching voltage was obtained by lowering the thickness, which did not affect the insulating nature of the films. The hysteresis results showed an excellent square-shaped loop with results (P-r=6 mu C/cm(2), E-c=100 kV/cm) in good agreement with earlier reports. The films also exhibited a dielectric constant of 250 and a dissipation factor of 0.02. The transport studies indicated an ohmic behavior, while higher voltages induced a bulk space charge.

Antiferroelectric lead zirconate (PZ) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation on platinum-coated silicon substrates. Films showed a polycrystalline pervoskite structure upon annealing at 650 degrees C for 5-10 min. Dielectric properties were investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. The dielectric constant of PZ films was 220 at 100 kHz with a dissipation factor of 0.03. The electric field induced transformation from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase was observed through the polarization change, using a Sawyer-Tower circuit. The maximum polarization value obtained was 40 mu C/cm(2). The average fields to excite the ferroelectric state, and to reverse to the antiferroelectric state were 71 and 140 kV/cm, respectively. The field induced switching was also observed through double maxima in capacitance-voltage characteristics. Leakage current was studied in terms of current versus time and current versus voltage measurements. A leakage current density of 5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at 3 V, for a film of 0.7 mu m thickness, was noted at room temperature. The trap mechanism was investigated in detail in lead zirconate thin films based upon a space charge limited conduction mechanism. The films showed a backward switching time of less than 90 ns at room temperature.

Amorphous carbon-sulfur (a-C:S) composite films were prepared by vapor phase pyrolysis technique. The structural changes in the a-C:S films were investigated by electron microscopy. A powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) study depicts the two-phase nature of a sulfur-incorporated a-C system. The optical bandgap energy shows a decreasing trend with an increase in the sulfur content and preparation temperature. This infers a sulfur incorporation and pyrolysis temperature induced reduction in structural disorder or increase in sp (2) or pi-sites. The presence of sulfur (S 2p) in the a-C:S sample is analyzed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sp (3)/sp (2) hybridization ratio is determined by using the XPS C 1s peak fitting, and the results confirm an increase in sp (2) hybrids with sulfur addition to a-C. The electrical resistivity variation in the films depends on both the sulfur concentration and the pyrolysis temperature.

An inexpensive and effective simple method for the preparation of nano-crystalline titanium oxide (anatase) thin films at room temperature on different transparent substrates is presented. This method is based on the use of peroxo-titanium complex, i.e. titanium isopropoxide as a single initiating organic precursor. Post-annealing treatment is necessary to convert the deposited amorphous film into titanium oxide (TiO2) crystalline (anatase) phase. These films have been characterized for X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies, atomic force microscopic (AFM) studies and optical measurements. The optical constants such as refractive index and extinction coefficient have been estimated by using envelope technique. Also, the energy gap values have been estimated using Tauc's formula for on glass and quartz substrates are found to be 3.35 eV and 3.39 eV, respectively.

Highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals have been assembled on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates using a wet synthesis route. The physical properties of the quantum dots (QD) have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and optical absorption spectroscopy techniques. These quantum dots showed a strong enhancement in the near band edge absorption. The in situ luminescence behavior has been interpreted in the light of the quantum confinement effect and induced strain in the core-shell structure.

We studied the microstructural evolution of multiple layers of elastically stiff films embedded in an elastically soft matrix using a phase field model. The coherent and planar film/matrix interfaces are rendered unstable by the elastic stresses due to a lattice parameter mismatch between the film and matrix phases, resulting in the break-up of the films into particles. With an increasing volume fraction of the stiff phase, the elastic interactions between neighbouring layers lead to: (i) interlayer correlations from an early stage; (ii) a longer wavelength for the maximally growing wave; and therefore (iii) a delayed break-LIP. Further, they promote a crossover in the mode of instability from a predominantly anti-symmetric (in phase) one to a symmetric (out of phase) one. We have computed a stability diagram for the most probable mode of break-up in terms of elastic modulus Mismatch and Volume fraction. We rationalize our results in terms of the initial driving force for destabilization, and corroborate our conclusions using simulations in elastically anisotropic systems.
