Structural and electrical properties of Eu2O3 films grown on Si(100) in 500–600 °C temperature range by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition are reported. As-grown films also possess the impurity Eu1−xO phase, which has been removed upon annealing in O2 ambient. Film’s morphology comprises uniform spherical mounds (40–60 nm). Electrical properties of the films, as examined by capacitance-voltage measurements, exhibit fixed oxide charges in the range of −1.5×1011 to −6.0×1010 cm−2 and dielectric constant in the range of 8–23. Annealing has resulted in drastic improvement of their electrical properties. Effect of oxygen nonstoichiometry on the film’s property is briefly discussed.

In the present work, we report the growth of wurtzite InN epilayers on GaN/Si (1 1 1) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The growth parameters such as indium flux, substrate temperature and RF power affect the crystallographic and morphological properties of InN layers, which were evaluated using high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) analysis and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that excess indium (In) concentrations and surface roughness were increased with increase in In flux and growth temperature. The intensity of HRXRD (0 0 0 2) peak, corresponding to c-axis orientation has been increased and full width at half maxima (FWHM) has decreased with increase in RF power. It was found that highly c-axis oriented InN epilayers can be grown at 450 degrees C growth temperature, 450 W RF power and 1.30 x 10(-7) mbar In beam equivalent pressure (BEP). The energy gap of InN layers grown by optimizing growth conditions was determined by photoluminescence and optical absorption measurement. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present work explores the electrical transport and infrared (IR) photoresponse properties of InN nanorods (NRs)/n-Si heterojunction grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Single-crystalline wurtzite structure of InN NRs is verified by the X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Raman measurements show that these wurtzite InN NRs have sharp peaks E(2)(high) at 490.2 cm(-1) and A(1)(LO) at 591 cm(-1). The current transport mechanism of the NRs is limited by three types of mechanisms depending on applied bias voltages. The electrical transport properties of the device were studied in the range of 80 to 450 K. The faster rise and decay time indicate that the InN NRs/n-Si heterojunction is highly sensitive to IR light.

Amorphous silicon carbide (a-Si(1-x)C(x)) films were deposited on silicon (100) and quartz substrates by pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering of silicon in methane (CH(4))-Argon (Ar) atmosphere. The influence of substrate temperature and target power on the composition, carbon bonding configuration, band gap, refractive index and hardness of a-SiC films has been investigated. Increase in substrate temperature results in slightly decreasing the carbon concentration in the films but favors silicon-carbon (Si-C) bonding. Also lower target powers were favorable towards Si-C bonding. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results agree with the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy results. Increase in substrate temperature resulted in increased hardness of the thin films from 13 to 17 GPa and the corresponding bandgap varied from 2.1 to 1.8 eV. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The effects of Mo, Ti, and Zr on the diffusion and growth of the Nb(X)Si-2 and Nb(X)(5)Si-3 phases in an Nb(X)-Si system are analyzed. The integrated diffusion coefficients are determined from diffusion couple experiments and compared with the data previously calculated in a binary Nb-Si system. The growth rates of both phases are affected by the addition of Mo and Zr, whereas the addition of Ti has no effect. The atomic mechanism of diffusion is also discussed based on the crystal structure and the possible changes in the defect concentrations due to alloying. Finally, the growth mechanism of the phases is discussed on the basis of a physico-chemical approach. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a comparative study of thin films of Er2O3 and Gd2O3 grown on n-type Si(100) by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) under the identical conditions has been presented. beta-Diketonate complex of rate earth metals was used as precursor. Description on the evolution of the morphology, structure, optical, and electrical characteristics of films with respect to growth parameters and post-deposition annealing process has been presented. As-gown Gd2O3 films grow with <111> texture, whereas the texture of Er2O3 films strongly depends on the growth temperature (either <100> or <111>). Compositional analysis reveals that the Gd2O3 films grown at or above 500degreesC are carbon free whereas Er2O3 films at upto 525degreesC show the presence of heteroatoms and Er2O3 films grown above 525degreesC are carbon five. The effective dielectric constant is in the range of 7-24, while the fixed charge density is in the range - 10(11) to 10(10) CM-2 as extracted from the C-V characteristics. DC I-V study was carried out to examine the leakage behaviour of films. It reveals that the as-grown Gd2O3 film was very leakey in nature. Annealing of the films in oxidizing ambient for a period of 20 min results in a drastic improvement in the leakage behaviour. The presence of heteroatoms (such as carbon) and their effect on the properties of films are discussed.

We prepared thin films composed of pure TiO2 or TiO2 with an Fe additive (at concentrations of 0.2-0.8 wt%) via a simple and cost effective sol gel process, and tested their antifungal properties (against Candida albicans (MTCC-1637), Candida tropicalis (MTCC-184), Candida parapsilosis (MTCC-2509), and Candida glabrata (MTCC-3019) and antibacterial properties (against Staphylococcus faecalis (NCIM-2604) Staphylococcus epidermidis (NCIM-2493), Staphylococcus aureus (NCIL-2122), and Bacillus subtilis (NCIM-2549)). The films were deposited on glass and Si substrates and subjected to annealing at 400 degrees C for 3 h in ambient air. The film structural and morphological properties were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy profilometry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Antifungal and antibacterial tests were conducted using the drop test method. Among the species examined, Candida albicans (MTCC-1637), and Staphylococcus aureus (NCIL-2122) showed complete colony formation inhibition after exposure for 4 h for the TiO2 loaded with 0.8 wt% Fe thin films. These results indicate that increasing the Fe concentration increased the antimicrobial activity, with complete inhibition of colony formation after 4 h exposure.

In0.2Ga0.8N layers were directly grown on Si(111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Structural characteristics of the as-grown InGaN epilayers were evaluated high resolution X-ray diffraction and composition of InGaN was estimated from photoluminescence spectra using the standard Vegard's law. High-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements were used to determine the band offset of wurtzite-In0.2Ga0.8N/Si(111) heterojunctions. The valence band of InGaN is found to be 2.08 +/- 0.04 eV below that of Si. The conduction band offset (CBO) of InGaN/Si heterojunction is found similar to 0.74 eV and a type-II heterojunction. The electrical transport behavior of n-n indium nitride nanodot-silicon (InN ND-Si) heterostructure Schottky diodes is reported here, which have been fabricated by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. InN ND structures were grown on a 20 nm InN buffer layer on Si substrates. These dots were found to be single crystalline and grown along [0 0 0 1] direction. Temperature-dependent current density-voltage plots (J-V-T) reveal that the ideality factor (eta) and Schottky barrier height (SBH) (Phi(B)) are temperature dependent. The incorrect values of the Richardson constant (A**) produced suggest an inhomogeneous barrier. Descriptions of the experimental results were explained by using two models. First one is barrier height inhomogeneities (BHIs) model, in which considering an effective area of the inhomogeneous contact provided a procedure for a correct determination of A**. The Richardson constant is extracted similar to 110 A cm(-2) K(-2) using the BHI model and that is in very good agreement with the theoretical value of 112 A cm(-2) K(-2). The second model uses Gaussian statistics and by this, mean barrier height Phi(0) and A** were found to be 0.69 eV and 113 A cm(-2) K(-2), respectively.

Protein nanoparticles (NPs) have found significant applications in drug delivery due to their inherent biocompatibility, which is attributed to their natural origin. In this study, bovine serum abumin (BSA) nanoparticles were introduced in multilayer thin film via layer-by-layer self-assembly for localized delivery of the anticancer drug Doxorubicin (Dox). BSA nanoparticles (similar to 100 nm) show a high negative zeta potential in aqueous medium (-55 mV) and form a stable dispersion in water without agglomeration for a long period. Hence, BSA NPs can be assembled on a substrate via layer-by-layer approach using a positively charged polyelectrolyte (chitosan in acidic medium). The protein nature of these BSA nanoparticles ensures the biocompatibility of the film, whereas the availability of functional groups on this protein allows one to tune the property of the self-assembly to have a pH-dependent drug release profile. The growth of multilayer thin film was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy, and the films were further characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The drug release kinetics of these BSA nanoparticles and their self-assembled thin film has been compared at a physiological pH of 7.4 and an acidic pH of 6.4.

We report the synthesis of a novel class of low band gap copolymers based on anacenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline core and oligothiophene derivatives acting as the acceptor and the donor moieties, respectively. The optical properties of the copolymers were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy while the electrochemical properties were determined by cyclic voltammetry. The band gap of these polymers was found to be in the range 1.8-2.0 eV as calculated from the optical absorption band edge. X-ray diffraction measurements show weak pi-pi stacking interactions between the polymer chains. The hole mobility of the copolymers was evaluated using field-effect transistor measurements yielding values in the range 10(-5)-10(-3) cm(2)/Vs.

The diamond films were deposited onto a wurtzite gallium nitride (GaN) thin film substrate using hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD). During the film deposition a lateral temperature gradient was imposed across the substrate by inclining the substrate. As grown films predominantly showed the hexagonal phase, when no inclination was applied to the substrate. Tilting the substrate with respect to the heating filament by 6 degrees imposed a lateral temperature gradient across the substrate, which induced the formation of a cubic diamond phase. Diamond grains were predominantly oriented in the (100) direction. However, a further increase in the substrate tilt angle to 12 degrees, resulted in grains oriented in the (111) direction. The growth rate and hence the morphology of diamond grains varied along the inclined substrate. The present study focuses on the measurements of dominant phase formation and crystal orientation with varying substrate inclination using orientation-imaging microscopy (OIM). This technique enables direct examination of individual diamond grains and their crystallographic orientation. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the influence of nickel incorporation on the mechanical properties and the in vitro bioactivity of hydrogenated carbon thin films were investigated in detail. Amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C : H) and nickel-incorporated hydrogenated carbon (Ni/a-C : H) thin films were deposited onto the Si substrates by using reactive biased target ion beam deposition technique. The films' chemical composition, surface roughness, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by using XPS, AFM, TEM, nanoindentation and nanoscratch test, respectively. XPS results have shown that the film surface is mainly composed of nickel, nickel oxide and nickel hydroxide, whereas at the core is nickel carbide (Ni3C) only. The presence of Ni3C has increased the sp(2) carbon content and as a result, the mechanical hardness of the film was decreased. However, Ni/a-C : H films shows very low friction coefficient with higher scratch-resistance behavior than that of pure a-C : H film. In addition, in vitro bioactivity study has confirmed that it is possible to grow dense bone-like apatite layer on Ni/a-C : H films. Thus, the results have indicated the suitability of the films for bone-related implant coating applications. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
