2- and 5-methylresorcinol form co-crystals with 4,4'-bipyridine in which some of the bipyridine molecules are loosely bound. These molecules can be replaced with other molecules of a similar shape and size to give a general method for the engineering of a ternary co-crystal.

Stem cell response to a library of scaffolds with varied 3D structures was investigated. Microarray screening revealed that each type of scaffold structure induced a unique gene expression signature in primary human bone marrow stromal cells (hBMSCs). Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that treatments sorted by scaffold structure and not by polymer chemistry suggesting that scaffold structure was more influential than scaffold composition. Further, the effects of scaffold structure on hBMSC function were mediated by cell shape. Of all the scaffolds tested, only scaffolds with a nanofibrous morphology were able to drive the hBMSCs down an osteogenic lineage in the absence of osteogenic supplements. Nanofiber scaffolds forced the hBMSCs to assume an elongated, highly branched morphology. This same morphology was seen in osteogenic controls where hBMSCs were cultured on flat polymer films in the presence of osteogenic supplements (OS). In contrast, hBMSCs cultured on flat polymer films in the absence of OS assumed a more rounded and less-branched morphology. These results indicate that cells are more sensitive to scaffold structure than previously appreciated and suggest that scaffold efficacy can be optimized by tailoring the scaffold structure to force cells into morphologies that direct them to differentiate down the desired lineage. Molecular weight and polydispersity are two structural features of hyperbranched polymers that are difficult to control because of the statistical nature of the step-growth polycondensation of AB(2) type monomers; the statistical growth also causes the polydispersity index to increase with percent conversion (or molecular weight). We demonstrate that using controlled amounts of a specifically designed B(3) core, containing B-type functionality that are more reactive than those present in the AB(2) monomer, both the molecular weight and the polydispersity can be readily controlled; the PDI was shown to improve with increasing mole-fraction of the B(3) core while the polymer molecular weight showed an expected decrease. Incorporation of a ``clickable'' propargyl group in the B(3) core unit permitted the generation of a core-functionalizable hyperbranched polymer. Importantly, this clickable core, in combination with a recently developed AB(2) monomer, wherein the B-type groups are allyl ethers and A is an hydroxyl group, led to the generation of a hyperbranched polymer carrying orthogonally functionalizable core and peripheral groups, via a single-step melt polycondensation. Selective functionalization of the core and periphery using two different types of chromophores was achieved, and the occurrence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the donor and acceptor chromophores was demonstrated.

We propose robust and scalable processes for the fabrication of floating gate devices using ordered arrays of 7 nm size gold nanoparticles as charge storage nodes. The proposed strategy can be readily adapted for fabricating next generation (sub-20 nm node) non-volatile memory devices.

Past studies of memory interference in multiprocessor systems have generally assumed that the references of each processor are uniformly distributed among the memory modules. In this paper we develop a model with local referencing, which reflects more closely the behavior of real-life programs. This model is analyzed using Markov chain techniques and expressions are derived for the multiprocessor performance. New expressions are also obtained for the performance in the traditional uniform reference model and are compared with other expressions-available in the literature. Results of a simulation study are given to show the accuracy of the expressions for both models.

Synthesis of a series of two-dimensional metallamacrocycles via coordination-driven self-assembly of a shape-selective Pt(2)(II)-molecular building unit incorporating carbazole-ethynyl functionality is described. An equimolar (1 : 1) combination of a Pt(2)(II)-organometallic 90 degrees acceptor, 1, with rigid linear ditopic donors (L(a) and L(b)) afforded [4 + 4] self-assembled octanuclear molecular squares, 2 and 3, in quantitative yields, respectively [L(a) = 4,4'-bipyridine; L(b) = trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene]. Conversely, a similar treatment of 1 with an amide-based unsymmetrical flexible ditopic donor, L(c), resulted in the formation of a [2 + 2] self-sorted molecular rhomboid (4a) as a single product [L(c) = N-(4-pyridyl)isonicotinamide]. Despite the possibility of several linkage isomeric macrocycles (rhomboid, triangle and square) due to the different connectivity of L(c), the formation of a single and symmetrical molecular rhomboid (4a) as the only product is an interesting observation. All the self-assembled macrocycles (2, 3 and 4a) were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR ((1)H and (31)P) and ESI-MS analysis. Further structural insights about the size and shape of the macrocycles were obtained through energy minimization using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Decoration of the starting carbazole building unit with Pt-ethynyl functionality enriches the assemblies to be more p-electron rich and luminescent in nature. Macrocycles 2 and 3 could sense the presence of electron deficient nitroaromatics in solution by quenching of the initial intensity upon gradual addition of picric acid (PA). They exhibited the largest quenching response with high selectivity for nitroaromatics compared to several other electron deficient aromatics tested.

Software transactional memory (STM) has been proposed as a promising programming paradigm for shared memory multi-threaded programs as an alternative to conventional lock based synchronization primitives. Typical STM implementations employ a conflict detection scheme, which works with uniform access granularity, tracking shared data accesses either at word/cache line or at object level. It is well known that a single fixed access tracking granularity cannot meet the conflicting goals of reducing false conflicts without impacting concurrency adversely. A fine grained granularity while improving concurrency can have an adverse impact on performance due to lock aliasing, lock validation overheads, and additional cache pressure. On the other hand, a coarse grained granularity can impact performance due to reduced concurrency. Thus, in general, a fixed or uniform granularity access tracking (UGAT) scheme is application-unaware and rarely matches the access patterns of individual application or parts of an application, leading to sub-optimal performance for different parts of the application(s). In order to mitigate the disadvantages associated with UGAT scheme, we propose a Variable Granularity Access Tracking (VGAT) scheme in this paper. We propose a compiler based approach wherein the compiler uses inter-procedural whole program static analysis to select the access tracking granularity for different shared data structures of the application based on the application's data access pattern. We describe our prototype VGAT scheme, using TL2 as our STM implementation. Our experimental results reveal that VGAT-STM scheme can improve the application performance of STAMP benchmarks from 1.87% to up to 21.2%.

Four new neutral copper-azido polymers [Cu(4)(N(3))(8)(Me-hmpz)(2)](n) (1), [Cu(4)(N(3))(8)(men)(2)](n) (2), [Cu(5)(N(3))(10)(N,N-dmen)(2)](n) (3) and [Cu(5)(N(3))(10)(N,N'-dmen)(5)](n) (4) [Me-hmpz = 1-methylhomopiperazine; men = N-methylethylenediamine; N, N-dmen = N, N-dimethylethylenediamine and N, N'-dmen = N, N'-dimethylethylenediamine] have been synthesized by using various molar equivalents of the chelating diamine ligands with Cu(NO(3))(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN(3). Single-crystal X-ray structures show that the basic asymmetric units of 1 and 2 are very similar, but the overall 1D structures were found to be quite different. Complex 3 with a different composition was found to be 2D in nature, while the 1D complex 4 with 1 : 1 metal to diamine ratio presented several new structural features. Cryomagnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature were corroborated with density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) performed on the complexes 1-3 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

A new approach to machine representation and analysis of three-dimensional objects is presented. The representation, based on the notion of "skeleton" of an object leads to a scheme for comparing two given object views for shape relations. The objects are composed of long, thin, rectangular prisms joined at their ends. The input picture to the program is the digitized line drawing portraying the three-dimensional object. To compare two object views, two characteristic vertices called "cardinal point" and "end-cardinal point," occurring consistently at the bends and open ends of the object are detected. The skeletons are then obtained as a connected path passing through these points. The shape relationships between the objects are then obtained from the matching characteristics of their skeletons. The method explores the possibility of a more detailed and finer analysis leading to detection of features like symmetry, asymmetry and other shape properties of an object.

The present article reviews some of the current work on a new class of materials which are nanoscale granular materials. We shall discuss in this paper two phase granular materials where one of the phases having nanometric dimension is embedded in a matrix of larger dimension. Known as nanoembedded materials, nanocomposites or ultrafine granular materials, this class of materials has attracted attention because of the opportunity of basic studies on the effect of size and embedding matrix on transformation behaviors as well as some novel properties, which include structural, magnetic and transport properties. These are in addition to the tremendous interests in what is known as quantum structures(embedded particles size less than 5 nm) for the case of semiconductors, which will not be discussed here. We shall primarily review the work done on metallic systems where the dispersed phases have low melting points and borrow extensively from the work done in our group. The phase transformations of the embedded particles show distinctive behavior and yield new insights. We shall first highlight briefly the strategy of synthesis of these materials by non-equilibrium processing techniques, which will be followed by examples where the effect of length scales on phase transformation behaviors like melting and solidification are discussed.

The spectral photocurrent characteristics of two donor-acceptor diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based copolymers (PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT) blended with a fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were studied using Fourier-transform photocurrent spectroscopy (FTPS) and monochromatic photocurrent (PC) method. PDPP-BBT: PCBM shows the onset of the lowest charge transfer complex (CTC) state at 1.42 eV, whereas TDPP-BBT: PCBM shows no evidence of the formation of a midgap CTC state. The FTPS and PC spectra of P3HT:PCBM are also compared. The larger singlet state energy difference of TDPP-BBT and PCBM compared to PDPP-BBT/P3HT and PCBM obliterates the formation of a midgap CTC state resulting in an enhanced photovoltaic efficiency over PDPP-BBT: PCBM. We address the problem of recognition and retrieval of relatively weak industrial signal such as Partial Discharges (PD) buried in excessive noise. The major bottleneck being the recognition and suppression of stochastic pulsive interference (PI) which has similar time-frequency characteristics as PD pulse. Therefore conventional frequency based DSP techniques are not useful in retrieving PD pulses. We employ statistical signal modeling based on combination of long-memory process and probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA). An parametric analysis of the signal is exercised for extracting the features of desired pules. We incorporate a wavelet based bootstrap method for obtaining the noise training vectors from observed data. The procedure adopted in this work is completely different from the research work reported in the literature, which is generally based on deserved signal frequency and noise frequency.

We study the distribution of first passage time for Levy type anomalous diffusion. A fractional Fokker-Planck equation framework is introduced. For the zero drift case, using fractional calculus an explicit analytic solution for the first passage time density function in terms of Fox or H-functions is given. The asymptotic behaviour of the density function is discussed. For the nonzero drift case, we obtain an expression for the Laplace transform of the first passage time density function, from which the mean first passage time and variance are derived.
