Recently we have reported the effect of (S)-6-aryl urea/thiourea substituted-2-amino-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzod]thiazole derivatives as potent anti-leukemic agents. To elucidate further the Structure Activity Relationship (SAR) studies on the anti-leukemic activity of (S)-2,6-diamino-4,5,6,7 tetrahydrobenzod]thiazole moiety, a series of 2-arlycarboxamide substituted-(S)-6-amino-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzod]thiazole were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their anti-leukemic activity by trypan blue exclusion, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays and cell cycle analysis. Results suggest that the position, number and bulkiness of the substituent on the phenyl ring of aryl carboxamide moiety at 2nd position of 6-amino-4,5,6,7-tetrhydrobenzod]thiazole play a key role in inhibiting the proliferation of leukemia cells. Compounds with ortho substitution showed poor activity and with meta and para substitution showed good activity. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Separated Local Field (SLF) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the determination of structure and dynamics of oriented systems such as membrane proteins oriented in lipid bilayers and liquid crystals. Of many SLF techniques available, Polarization Inversion Spin Exchange at Magic Angle (PISEMA) has found wide application due to its many favorable characteristics. However the pulse sequence suffers from its sensitivity to proton resonance frequency offset. Recently we have proposed a new sequence named 2(4)-SEMA (J. Chem. Phys. 132 (2010) 134301) that overcomes this problem of PISEMA. The present work demonstrates the advantage of 2(4)-SEMA as a highly sensitive SLF technique even for very large proton offset. 2(4)-SEMA has been designed for obtaining reliable dipolar couplings by switching the magic-angle spin-lock for protons over four quadrants as against the use of only two quadrants in PISEMA. It is observed that for on-resonance condition, 2(4)-SEMA gives rise to signal intensity comparable to or slightly higher than that from PISEMA. But under off-resonance conditions, intensities from 2(4)-SEMA are several fold higher than those from PISEMA. Comparison with another offset compensated pulse sequence, SAMPI4, also indicates a better intensity profile for 2(4)-SEMA. Experiments carried out on a single crystal of N-15 labeled N-acetyl-DL-valine and simulations have been used to study the relative performance of the pulse sequences considered. 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoic acid decarboxylase inAspergillus niger was induced by many substrate analogs including salicylate and gentisate. Catechol, which is the product, induced the enzyme tenfold. The purified enzyme was competitively inhibited by manyortho substituted benzoic acids. The Ki values for salicylate,o-fluoro ando-chloro benzoic acids were 0.12 mM, 0.12 mM, and 0.13 mM respectively; these values were lower than the Km value for the substrate. As the size of the group in theortho position increased, as in the case of bromo- and iodo-derivatives, there was an increase in their Ki values. The C-2 hydroxyl group was essential both for the induction and for interaction with the enzyme. The C-3 hydroxyl group was not necessary for induction or inhibition, but it might be essential for the catalysis.

A study of the chain conformation in solutions of polyphenylacetylene and poly(2-octyne) has been performed. The two polymers differ in many ways : polyphenylacetylene gives a red solution while poly(2-octyne) is transparent and, a marked difference on the chain rigidity is observed : the statistical length are 45 Å and 135 Å respectively. From the study of these two systems, one deduces that curvature fluctuations play a minor role on the π electrons localization, and that the torsion between monomer units is the pertinent parameter to understand the chain conformation and the π electrons localization.

The reactions of [MCl2(cod)](M = Pd or Pt, cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) with RN[P(OPh)2]2[R = Me (L1) or Ph (L2)] afford the chelate complexes [MCl2L1] and [MCl2L2]. The dinuclear palladium(O) complex, [Pd2L13] has been synthesized by starting from [Pd2(dba)3](dba = dibenzylideneacetone). Redox condensation of [Pd2(dba)3] and [PdCl2(PhCN)2] in the presence of the diphosphazane ligands gives the dinuclear palladium(I) complexes [Pd2Cl2L12] and [Pd2Cl2L22]. The structures of the complexes have been deduced from 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopic data. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirm the structures of [Pd2L13] and [Pd2Cl2L22].

Chromium substituted beta diketonate complexes of aluminium have been synthesized and employed as precursors for a novel soft chemistry process wherein microwave irradiation of a solution of the complex yields within minutes well crystallized needles of alpha (Al1 XCrx)(2)O-3 measuring 20 30 nm in diameter and 50 nm long By varying the microwave irradiation parameters and using a surfactant such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone the crystallite size and shape can be controlled and their agglomeration prevented These microstructural parameters as well as the polymorph of the Cr substituted Al2O3 formed may also be controlled by employing a different complex Samples of alpha (Al1 XCrx)(2)O-3 have been characterized by XRD FTIR and TEM The technique results in material of homogeneous metal composition, as shown by EDAX and can be adjusted as desired The technique has been extended to obtain coatings of alpha (Al1 XCrx)(2)O-3 on Si(100)

Potassamide induced in situ alkylation of 1-alkyl- 4-cyano-3-methoxy-5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (2a & 2b) with alkyl iodides (CH3I, CH3CH2I & cyclohexyl iodide) gave the 5-alkyl- and 5,9-dialkyl-5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (4–ad & 3a–e), isoquinoline derivatives, (5a–b) and diastereomeric mixture of 4- alkyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-3(2H)-ones (6a–e & 6′a–e). Structures were assigned on the basis of spectral data [Mass, 1H & 13C NMR, 2D NOESY & HC-COLOC]. Amide induced in situ alkylation of compounds 3a and 4a with CH3I gave in almost quantitative yield the dimethylated compounds 3d and 3a respectively. While KNH2/liq.NH3 methylation of 1,2- dihydroisoquinoline, 1 with CH3I gave the mixture of compounds, 6a & 6′a and the isoquinoline derivative 5a, NaH/benzene reaction of 1 with CH3I gave exclusively 5a. N-methylation of the mixture of compounds 6a & 6′a with NaH/CH3I gave the methylated derivatives, 7 & 8. A suitable mechanism has been proposed for the formation of products.

The synthesis of 8-aminoquinolines and 1,10-phenanthrolines with substituents in alpha of the nitrogen has been performed through an inverse-demanding aza-Diels-Alder (Povarov reaction) in the fluoroalcohols TFE or HFIP. This path involves simple starting materials: 1,2-phenylenediamines, enol ethers and aldehydes.

We demonstrate a robust strategy for obtaining a high dispersion of ultrafine Pt and PtRu nanoparticles on graphene by exploiting the nucleation of a metal precursor phase on graphite oxide surfaces. Our method opens up new possibilities to engineer graphene-based hybrids for applications in multifunctional nanoscale devices.

The proton second moment (M2) and spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) have been measured in (NH4)2ZnBr4 in the range 77-300 K. The room-temperature spectrum shows a structure which disappears around 243 K. The signal is strong and narrow even at 77 K. Proton T1 shows a maximum at 263 K, caused by spin rotation interaction and decreases with decreasing temperature till 235 K, where it shows a sudden increase. Below 235 K, again it decreases and shows a slope change around 216.5 K (reported Tc). From 216.5 K, T1 decreases continuously without exhibiting any minimum down to 77 K. The narrow line at 77 K, and absence of a T1 minimum down to 77 K indicate the possibility of quantum mechanical tunnelling in this system. Motional parameters such as activation energy and pre-exponential factor have been evaluated for the reorientational motion of the NH+4 ion.

Lanthanide coordination polymers of the general formula Ln(2)(L)(5)(NO3)(H2O)(4)](n) (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2), Gd (3)) supported by a novel aromatic carboxylate ligand 4-((1H-benzod]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzoic acid (HL) have been synthesized, characterized, and their photoluminescence behavior is examined. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns of complexes 1-3 showed that 1-3 are isostructural; thus, 1 has been chosen as an example to discuss in detail about the molecular structure by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 is a one-dimensional (1D) helical chain-like coordination polymer consisting of unique unsymmetrical dinuclear lanthanide building blocks. The 1D chains are further linked by the significant intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions to form a two-dimensional supramolecular network. The Tb3+ complex exhibits bright green luminescence efficiency in the solid state with a quantum yield of 15%. On the other hand, poor luminescence efficiency has been noted for Eu3+-benzoate complex.

Diacetylenic phospholipid, 1,2 bis-(tricosa-10,12-diynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC), forms helices and tubules in addition to liposomes. The diacetylenic moiety responsible for the transformation is probed by 2-D NMR correlated spectroscopy. Chemical shift assignments and the analysis of 2D-COSY measurements were done on the lipid in chloroform-d solution. Based on this analysis, a model for the lipid is proposed. The geometry of the headgroup, glycerol backbone and acyl chains up to three methylenes from glycerol backbone [-(CH2)(3)-] is similar to that of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine. The estimated torsional angle for methylene groups adjacent to diacetylenic moieties suggested an overall tilt of the diacetylenic lipid molecule from the bilayer axis of 25-30 degrees. This tilt could be negative or positive depending on the handedness of the resultant microstructures.

Birch reduction of 8,9-didehydroestradiol-17 beta 3-methyl ether 1 or 9(11)-didehydroestradiol-17 beta 3-methyl ether 2 followed by acid hydrolysis results in a mixture of 19-nortestosterone 8 and 19-nor-9 beta, 10 alpha-testosterone 9 in varying amounts. However, reduction of their acetates with sodium or lithium, tert-butyl alcohol in liquid ammonia and in the presence of aniline affords exclusively 19-nortestosterone. Similarly, 18a-homo-19-nortestosterone 12 is prepared from the acetate of 18a-homoestradiol-17 beta 3-methyl ether, 10.

Ceric ammonium sulphate oxidation of 1- and 1,4- disubstituted naphthalenes gives 2- and/or 2,3- disubstituted 1,4- naphthoquinones through migration of substituents (D, Br, Ph). Similar rearrangements are also observed in the manganese(III) oxidation and also in the anodic oxidation of these substrates. The results are consistent with the proposal that these oxidations go through the formation of radical cation followed by reaction with H2O and further oxidation of the radical to the carbocationic intermediate on the way to the corresponding 1,4-naphthoquinone. Oxidation of 1,4-diphenylnaphthalene gives 2,3-diphenyl-1,4-naphthoquinone or 4-hydroxy- 2,4- diphenyl - 1(4)R - naphthalenone. The results are in accordance with the conclusion that such rearrangements do not require prior formation of arene oxide intermediates, originally proposed for the NM shift mechanism.

The solid state photochemical behaviour of 7-hydroxy-4-styrylcoumarin 1 and several of its derivatives and analogues has been investigated. All the compounds with the exception of 7-methoxy-4-styrylcoumarin 2 are photolabile and yield anti-HT dimers. It has been observed that chloro substitution in the systems studied does not lead to the expected beta-packing mode. The photobehaviour of 1 and 2 has been correlated with their crystal structures. Reasons for alpha-packing have been examined. The systematics in the arrangement of the carbonyl group and phenyl group of the close neighbours in the crystals of 1, 2 and a few other cases are presented.
