Bakgrunden till denna avhandling är att nivån i studentskrivningarna i modersmål och litteratur har sjunkit under de senaste tio åren bland både finskspråkiga och svenskspråkiga gymnasister i Finland. I och med det startades ett projekt, Språklig mångfald, vars syfte är att undersöka bakgrundsfaktorer till att nivån har sjunkit. Som en del av projektet redogör jag i den här avhandlingen för finlandssvenska gymnasisters läsvanor och skrivvanor, dvs. vad, hur ofta och på vilket språk gymnasisterna läser och skriver. Dessutom har jag undersökt gymnasisters attityder till ämnet modersmål och litteratur. Min studie är baserad på en enkätundersökning bland 81 gymnasister samt på intervjuer med åtta gymnasister. Resultatet visar att gymnasister läser dagstidningar i betydligt större utsträckning än de läser böcker. Speciellt gymnasister med låga betyg i modersmål och litteratur läser sällan eller aldrig skönlitteratur. Skrivkulturen bland gymnasisterna innefattar främst media som textmeddelanden per mobiltelefon och debattinlägg på diskussionsforum på Internet. I dessa texter används oftast ett enkelt och kortfattat språk. Gymnasister med höga betyg i modersmålsämnet läser oftare och skriver flera olika genrer under sin fritid än vad gymnasister med låga betyg gör. Gymnasister med höga betyg läser och skriver även oftare på svenska än vad gymnasister med låga betyg gör. I min studie framkommer det att gymnasisterna anser att modersmålsämnet är viktigt, men inte roligt samt att höga betyg korrelerar med positiva attityder. De som har negativa attityder har ofta haft svårigheter med ämnet och har även svårt att se någon koppling mellan modersmålsämnet och vardagen samt framtiden. Många av dem anser att studentskrivningarna är det enda målet med modersmålsämnet.

The complexity of life is based on an effective energy transduction machinery, which has evolved during the last 3.5 billion years. In aerobic life, the utilization of the high oxidizing potential of molecular oxygen powers this machinery. Oxygen is safely reduced by a membrane bound enzyme, cytochrome c oxidase (CcO), to produce an electrochemical proton gradient over the mitochondrial or bacterial membrane. This gradient is used for energy-requiring reactions such as synthesis of ATP by F0F1-ATPase and active transport. In this thesis, the molecular mechanism by which CcO couples the oxygen reduction chemistry to proton-pumping has been studied by theoretical computer simulations. By building both classical and quantum mechanical model systems based on the X-ray structure of CcO from Bos taurus, the dynamics and energetics of the system were studied in different intermediate states of the enzyme. As a result of this work, a mechanism was suggested by which CcO can prevent protons from leaking backwards in proton-pumping. The use and activation of two proton conducting channels were also enlightened together with a mechanism by which CcO sorts the chemical protons from pumped protons. The latter problem is referred to as the gating mechanism of CcO, and has remained a challenge in the bioenergetics field for more than three decades. Furthermore, a new method for deriving charge parameters for classical simulations of complex metalloenzymes was developed.

This is an ethnographic study, in the field of medical anthropology, of village life among farmers in southwest Finland. It is based on 12 months of field work conducted 2002-2003 in a coastal village. The study discusses how social and cultural change affects the life of farmers, how they experience it and how they act in order to deal with the it. Using social suffering as a methodological approach the study seeks to investigate how change is related to lived experiences, idioms of distress, and narratives. Its aim has been to draw a locally specific picture of what matters are at stake in the local moral world that these farmers inhabit, and how they emerge as creative actors within it. A central assumption made about change is that it is two-fold; both a constructive force which gives birth to something new, and also a process that brings about uncertainty regarding the future. Uncertainty is understood as an existential condition of human life that demands a response, both causing suffering and transforming it. The possibility for positive outcomes in the future enables one to understand this small suffering of everyday life both as a consequence of social change, which fragments and destroys, and as an answer to it - as something that is positively meaningful. Suffering is seen to engage individuals to ensure continuity, in spite of the odds, and to sustain hope regarding the future. When the fieldwork was initiated Finland had been a member of the European Union for seven years and farmers felt it had substantially impacted on their working conditions. They complained about the restrictions placed on their autonomy and that their knowledge was neither recognised, nor respected by the bureaucrats of the EU system. New regulations require them to work in a manner that is morally unacceptable to them and financial insecurity has become more prominent. All these changes indicate the potential loss of the home and of the ability to ensure continuity of the family farm. Although the study initially focused on getting a general picture of working conditions and the nature of farming life, during the course of the fieldwork there was repeated mention of a perceived high prevalence of cancer in the area. This cancer talk is replete with metaphors that reveal cultural meanings tied to the farming life and the core values of autonomy, endurance and permanence. It also forms the basis of a shared identity and a means of delivering a moral message about the fragmentation of the good life; the loss of control; and the invasion of the foreign. This thesis formed part of the research project Expressions of Suffering. Ethnographies of Illness Experiences in Contemporary Finnish Contexts funded by the Academy of Finland. It opens up a vital perspective on the multiplicity and variety of the experience of suffering and that it is particularly through the use of the ethnographic method that these experiences can be brought to light. This study deals with how ethnic minorities and immigrants are portrayed in the Finnish print media. The study also asks how media users of various ethnocultural backgrounds make sense of these mediated stories. A more general objective is to elucidate negotiations of belonging and positioning practices in an increasingly complex society. The empirical part of the study is based on content analysis and qualitative close reading of 1,782 articles in five newspapers (Hufvudstadsbladet, Vasabladet, Helsingin Sanomat, Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat) during various research periods between 1999 and 2007. Four case studies on print media content are followed up by a focus group study involving 33 newspaper readers of Bosnian, Somalian, Russian, and 'native' Finnish backgrounds. The study draws from different academic and intellectual traditions; mainly media and communication studies, sociology and social psychology. The main theoretical framework employed is positioning theory, as developed by Rom Harré and others. Building on this perspective, situational self-positioning, positioning by others, and media positioning are seen as central practices in the negotiation of belonging. In support of contemporary developments in social sciences, some of these negotiations are seen as occurring in a network type of communicative space. In this space, the media form one of the most powerful institutions in constructing, distributing and legitimising values and ideas of who belongs to 'us', and who does not. The notion of positioning always involves an exclusionary potential. This thesis joins scholars who assert that in order to understand inclusionary and exclusionary mechanisms, the theoretical starting point must be a recognition of a decent and non-humiliating society. When key insights are distilled from the five empirical cases and related to the main theories, one of the major arguments put forward is that the media were first and foremost concerned with a minority actor's rightful or unlawful belonging to the Finnish welfare system. However, in some cases persistent stereotypes concerning some immigrant groups' motivation to work, pay taxes and therefore contribute are so strong that a general idea of individualism is forgotten in favour of racialised and stagnated views. Discussants of immigrant background also claim that the positions provided for minority actors in the media are not easy to identify with; categories are too narrow, journalists are biased, the reporting is simplifying and carries labelling potential. Hence, although the will for the communicative space to be more diverse and inclusive exists — and has also in many cases been articulated in charters, acts and codes — the positioning of ethnic minorities and immigrants differs significantly from the ideal.

Towards the Breaking Day is an ethnography of belian, an exceptionally lively tradition of curing rituals performed by the Luangans, a politically marginalized population of swidden cultivators of Indonesian Borneo. The principal purpose of the study is to explore the significance of belian rituals in practice. It asks what belian rituals do socially, politically, and existentially for particular people in particular circumstances. Departing from conventional conceptions of rituals as ethereal liminal or insulated traditional domains, it demonstrates the importance of understanding rituals as emergent within their specific historical and social settings, and highlights the irreducibility of lived reality to epistemological certainty. Each chapter of the book represents an analysis of a concrete ritual performance, exemplifying a diversity of ritual genres, stylistic modalities and sensual ambiences, ranging from low-keyed, habitual affairs to drawn-out, crowd-seizing community rituals and innovative, montage-like cultural experiments. The study is based on eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in non-Christian Central Luangan communities in which ritual and everyday life are complexly intermixed. It is intended as a contribution to the anthropological study of ritual and to the ethnography of Borneo religion in which the study of shamanistic life rituals has been overshadowed by a long-standing fascination with death and funerary rites.

I denna pro gradu-avhandling granskas teaterns möjligheter att främja social inklusion. Genom att analysera vad drama och teater kan ge ungdomar och hur social inklusion bland unga i ett samfund kan främjas, belyses även frågan om hur socialt arbete och teater ömsesidigt kan berika varandra. Avhandlingen är en fallstudie av Half Moon Young People’s Theatre, en barn- och ungdomsteater i Tower Hamlets i östra London. Teatern arbetar med barn och unga med ett särskilt fokus på att engagera grupper som ofta marginaliserats, exempelvis på grund av sin kulturella bakgrund eller till följd av funktionshinder. I denna studie är fokus på Half Moons projekt riktade till tonåringar: Careers in Theatre, Speak Up och ungdomsteatergrupperna Lunar och Solar. Studien är kvalitativ och studiens empiriska data har främst samlats in genom deltagande observation, intervjuer och granskning av dokument. Det empiriska materialet visar på Half Moons aktiva arbete för mångfald och för att göra verksamheten och deltagandet tillgängligt för alla barn och unga. Teatern blir en mötesplats genom vilken ungdomarna kan lära sig acceptera och uppskatta mångfalden i samfundet. Teaterarbetet bidrar till en ökad känsla för samfundet och till tolerans och förståelse för andra. Det är en glädjefylld, trygg och meningsfull fritidsverksamhet där nya vänskapskontakter kan knytas och många färdigheter övas inför framtiden. Teaterarbetet ger deltagarna bekräftelse vilket bidrar till att självförtroendet växer. Personalens engagemang och osjälviska arbete för inklusion genomsyrar verksamheten. Möjligheten att ge alla en ny chans och ett jämlikt bemötande är centralt i teaterns arbete. Forskningsresultaten pekar på teaterns potential inom socialt arbete och för att främja inklusion. Teaterns möjligheter att öka klientens delaktighet och utveckla förhållandet mellan socialarbetare och klient visar på betydelsen av etablera dylik verksamhet inom socialt arbete. Att inte låta sig begränsas, utan förutsättningslöst samarbeta över sektorer ökar chanserna att finna nya kreativa idéer och verksamhetsformer.
