Embobied Object, Material Family. Late-Medieval Wood Sculptures Depicting Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child in Finland Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, was one of the most popular saints in Western Europe in the late Middle Ages. She was often depicted with two other figures, the Virgin and the Christ Child (Anna Selbdritt). The dissertation examines the polychrome wood sculptures showing this motif, with a special focus on those remaining in Finland. It investigates the meanings these sculptures had to their observers in the fifteenth-century Finland. The study sheds light to important material heritage which is little known and offers new insights into the cult and imagery of the holy grandmother. Methodologically the study is based on iconology and post-formalist art history, and it appropriates concepts such as spatiality, sanctity, corporeality, and gender. Taking a comparative approach it knits together larger tendencies and local people and incidents. By conflating methodological domains it renews the ways how fragmentary wood sculptures, lacking documentary written sources, can be contextually interpreted and comprehended. The sculptures are analyzed from three angles. Firstly, the study explores the sculptures by focusing on their materiality and facture, which is to consider them as records of their own making. The analysis provides new information concerning the quantity, location, and current condition of the sculptures and it also elucidates problems regarding attribution, dating, display, and craftsmanship. The book presents the results of the empirical study of 45 Saint Anne groups; these works are individually described in the large Appendix. Secondly, the works are contextualized to the specific historical conditions in which they were observed. The study discusses closely the circumstances in the Turku Cathedral around the shrine of Saint Anne, the popular belief, and the piety of individual persons. The sculptures, deemed as the embodiments of the holy characters, interacted with the devotees. Thirdly, the works are examined within the wider theological and ideological currents of the era centered on the body and Incarnation. Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child motif demonstrated the Carnal Trinity, the motherly side of the Holy Trinity. The dissertation argues that Saint Anne was interpreted as the female counterpart or, in a mythical sense, wife of God. Furthermore, the Child s implicit, simultaneous presence as a suffering or dead man imbues the sculptures with a sense of the Passion, thus associating them with the pietà and the Mater dolorosa motifs. The naked Christ Child underlines him as the offering and, eventually, the Eucharistic wafer. The study suggests that the sculptures mediate continuity and the bloodline between the generations by the intertwined and repeated gestures, clothing and positions of the portrayed figures. Regardless of the ostensible homeliness of the sculptures, so readily reiterated by earlier scholars, these sculptures represented creation and birth through the carnal yet holy mothers.

Important modernists in their own countries, Anna Akhmatova and Edith Södergran are compared in this dissertation as poets whose poetry reflects the climactic events of the early twentieth century in Finland and Russia. A comparatist, biographical and historical approach is used to uncover the circumstances surrounding these events. First the poets’ early works are reviewed and their contemporaries are mentioned to provide a poetic context. Then a brief review of Finnish and Russian history situates them historically. Next, the rich literary diversity of St. Petersburg’s Silver Age is presented and the work of the poets is viewed in context before their poetry is compared, as the First World War, October Revolution and subsequent Finnish Civil War impact their writing. While biography is not the primary focus, it becomes important as inevitably the writers’ lives are changed by cataclysmic events and the textual analysis of the poems in Swedish, Russian and English shows the impact of war on their poetry. These two poets have not been compared before in a critical review in English and this work contributes to needed work in English. They share certain common modernist traits: attention to the word, an intimate, unconventional voice, and a concern with audience. In addition, they both reject formal traditions while they adopt new forms and use modern, outside influences such as art, architecture and philosophy as subject matter and a lens through which to focus their poetry. While it may seem that Anna Akhmatova was the most socially aware poet, because of the censorship she endured under Stalin, my research has revealed that actually Edith Södergran showed the most social consciousness. Thus, a contrast of the poets’ themes reveals these differences in their approaches. Both poets articulated a vibrant response to war and revolution becoming modernists in the process. In their final works created in the years before their deaths, they reveal the solace they found in nature as well as final mentions of the violent events of their youth. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to analyse how femininity is constructed in twelve portrait interviews of women in the dailies Dagens Nyheter (Stockholm) and Hufvudstadsbladet (Helsinki) in September 1996, and to explore the portrait interview as a media genre. The qualitative analysis has a feminist and constructionist perspective and is connected to critical text analysis. It was carried out on two levels: first, femininity is identified on the linguistic level by choice of words, and second on the level of content (topical motifs/themes). The portrait interview as a genre constitutes a third dimension in the analysis: The aim is not towards the identification of femininity, but rather towards the identification of the portrait interview a relatively unexplored media genre. References (Swedish: omtal) to the principal character (or protagonist) are traced mainly through reference chains which consist of names, pronouns and substantive phrases. The interviewees were referred to by their full names in Dagens Nyheter (with the exception of the oldest and youngest interviewees, both of whom were mainly referred to by their first names), while the style of reference varied more in Hufvudstadsbladet. The position of the principal character was also analysed through her relation in the text to minor characters from her working life and from her private life. These minor characters maintained their subordinate positions in all of the portraits except that of the youngest principal character, in which the subsidiary voices became at least as strong as the voice of the principal character. Three frequently-recurring topical motifs occurred in the portraits: The first involved explanations for the principal character s success divided into three categories, agent, affect and ambition, the second concerned using journeys or trips as symbols for turning points in life, and the third referred to the ambiguity in the contradiction between private (family/other private life) and public (work) life. This ambiguity is connected to the portrait interview as a text type (genre) which features conclusions at the end of portraits, which in turn is characteristic of reportage. However, the analysis showed that the conclusions of the portrait interviews often also included elements of ambiguity. This was evident in the contradictions be14 tween private and public life that arose in the portrait interviews that focused on these two spheres. The portraits that focused on the principal character s public life showed ambiguity on a more general level concerning questions about being a woman and having a profession, and they often ended with a description of some details of her private life. The women in the portraits were all constructed as being successful, in terms of having achieved direct success, reflective success or success in the form of life wisdom. The women of direct success were described as ambitious individuals with no sidetracks on their life paths, while those of reflective success were described as active heroines who had received help from different agents, who could use their affects as enriching ingredients in life, but who in the end had control over their own lives (life stories). The elderly women were constructed as having achieved life wisdom and their portraits were focused upon the past. The portrait interview as a genre is characterised by journalistic freedom (in relation to the more strict news genre), by a now room (Swedish nurum ) where the journalist meets the principal character (usually via spoken dialogue that she or he transforms into written text to be read by a mass-media audience) and by the relatively closed structure of the portrait. The portrait is relatively independent in relation to the news genre and in relation to the context of what has previously been written, what is being written at the time and what will be written in the future the principal character does not need to belong to the newspaper s usual gallery of actors. Furthermore, the principal character is constructed as being independent in relation to the subsidiary characters and other media actors. The conflict is within the principal character herself and within her life story, unlike the news genre in which equal actors are in conflict with each other. The portrait is also independent in relation to the news lifespan; the publishing timetable is not as strict as in the news genre, but is still dependent on the factors initiating the portrait. The enclosures consist of a raw analysis of two of twelve portrait interviews and of copies of all portraits.

Tarkastelen tässä pro gradu –tutkielmassa kirkon ja uskonnon vaikutusta seksuaali- ja lisääntymisterveyteen Nicaraguassa. Työn viitekehyksenä on Suomen rahoittama seksuaali- ja lisääntymisterveyttä, tasa-arvoa sekä naisten vaikutusmahdollisuuksia edistävä kehitysyhteistyöhanke Nicaraguassa. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu kahdestakymmenestäkahdesta haastattelusta, jotka keräsin Nicaraguassa maalis-huhtikuussa 2007. Haastattelumetodiksi valitsin teemahaastattelun, jota muotoilin feministisen haastatteluperinteen mukaisesti. Selvitän tutkimuksessani Nicaraguassa keräämni haastatteluaineistoni kautta katolisen naisen toimijuutta eli sitä, miten katolisten naisten on mahdollista irtautua niin konservatiivisten katolisten kuin maallistuneiden feministien uskovalle naiselle antamasta perinteisestä asemasta. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä tutkimuksessa on Susan Starr Seredin luoma uskonnollisen naisen jatkumo, jonka ääripäissä ovat symbolinen nainen ja toimijanainen. Seredin mallin avulla tulkitsin haastattelemieni uskonnollisten naisten sekä heidän kertomustensa kautta heidän asiakkaittensa toimijuutta seksuaali- ja lisääntymisterveyteen liittyvissä kysymyksissä. Analysoin haastateltavieni kertomuksia työnsä ja uskontonsa välisistä ristiriitatilanteista tai tilanteista, joissa ristiriitaa ei ollut syntynyt kirkon virallisesta opetuksesta huolimatta. Muovasin lopulta Seredin jatkumosta ympyränmallisen uskonnollisuuden kentän, jossa symbolinen nainen on ympyrän keskellä ja naisten toimijuus ympyrän kehällä. Haastattelemani terveydenhuollon työntekijät sijoittuivat lähelle toimijuuden kehää, tasapainotellen kuitenkin ainakin puheen tasolla katolisen kirkon virallisen opin ja sitä kautta symbolisen naisen position ja oman ammattietiikkansa välissä. Aineistostani näkyi, että katolisen kirkon seksuaalimoraali vaikutti niin terveydenhuollon työntekijöiden kuin asiakkaidenkin elämän. Kirkon oppi ei kuitenkaan analyysini mukaan rajoittanut haastateltavieni toimijuutta, vaan asetti näm uskonnolliset naiset tilanteeseen, jossa he joutuivat käymän vuoropuhelua työnsä ja uskontonsa välisten ristiriitaa synnyttävien ohjeiden ja velvoitteiden kanssa. Useimmiten haastateltavat erottautuivat kirkon virallisesta opista ja samaistuivat terveydenhuollon vaatimuksiin. Muutama haastateltava identifioi itsensä vahvasti kirkkoon, mutta erottautui kuitenkin sen virallisesta opista vedoten ammattietiikkaansa. Kirkosta ei kuitenkaan haluttu erottautua kokonaan, vaan toivottiin yhteistyötä kirkon kanssa seksuaali- ja lisääntymisterveyden parantamiseksi. Haastattelemani terveydenhuollon työntekijät olivat kaikki aktiivisia toimijoita. Heidän uskonnollisuutensa näkyi heidän moraalisissa pohdinnoissaan, mikä samalla vahvisti heidän toimijuuttansa: he tulkitsivat haastatteluissa uskontoa ja kristillistä oppia omien moraalikäsityksiensä mukaisesti uudestaan ja oikeuttivat näin eettisesti nekin työtehtävänsä, jotka eivät ole linjassa katolisen kirkon virallisen opin kanssa. Osa haastateltavista muodosti oman uskonnontulkintansa oman moraalikäsityksensä pohjalta, osa taas vieraannutti työnsä ja uskontonsa välisen ristiriidan käsittelemllä esimerkiksi terveydellisistä syistä tehtävää aborttia vain lääketieteellisenä toimenpiteenä. Ehkäisymenetelmien käyttöön vaikutti kirkkoa ja uskontoa enemmän kulttuuri, jonka mukaan miehellä on oikeus päättää perheen asioista – ja myös puolisonsa lisääntymisestä. Useat naiset käyttävätkin ehkäisymenetelmiä salaa perheeltään. Seksuaalikasvatusta pidettiin merkittävänä kansallisen seksuaali- ja lisääntymisterveysstrategian tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi. Tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi haastateltavat toivoivat laajempaa yhteistyötä niin kirkkojen kuin opetusministeriönkin kanssa. Kirkolla ja uskonnolla on vaikutusta yhteiskunnan arvoihin, moraalikäsityksiin ja hyväksyttäviin käyttäytymismalleihin. Naisen yhteiskunnallinen asema, mahdollisuus päättää itse omasta seksuaalisuudestaan ja lisääntymisestään ja hänen taloudelliset mahdollisuutensa elää näiden valintojen mukaisesti vaikuttavat kaikki lisääntymis- ja seksuaalioikeuksien toteutumiseen. Vaikka useimmat haastateltavani erottautuivatkin kirkon virallisesta opista, kirkon ja uskonnon vaikutuksella on merkitystä seksuaali- ja lisääntymisterveydenhuoltoa edistävien kehitysyhteistyöhankkeiden tavoitteiden toteutumiseen.

The subject of this work is the mysticism of Russian poet, critic and philosopher Vjacheslav Ivanov (1866-1949). The approach adopted involves the textual and discourse analysis and findings of the history of ideas. The subject has been considered important because of Ivanov's visions of his dead wife, writer Lydia Zinovieva-Annibal, which were combined with audible messages ("automatic writings"). Several automatic writings and descriptions of the visions from Ivanov's archive collections in St.Petersburg and Moscow are presented in this work. Right after the beginning of his hallucinations in the autumn of 1907, Ivanov was totally captivated by the theosophical ideas of Anna Mintslova, the background figure for this work. Anna Mintslova, a disciple of Rudolf Steiner's Esoteric School, offered Ivanov the theosophical concept of initiation to interpret paranormal phenomena in his intimate life. The work is divided into three main chapters, an introduction and aconclusion. The first chapter is called The Mystical Person: Anthropology of Ivanov and describes the role of the inner "Higher Self" in Ivanov's views on the nature of human consciousness. The political implications of the concepts, "mystical anarchism" and "sobornost" (religious unity) are also examined. The acquaintance and contacts with Anna Mintslova during 1906-1907 gave a framework to Ivanov's search for an organic society and personal religious experience. The second part, Mystics of Initiation and Visionary Aesthetics describes the influence of the initiation concept on Ivanov's aesthetic views (mainly "realistic symbolism"). On the other hand, some connections between the imagery of his visions and symbols in his verses of that period are established. Since Mintslova represented the ideas of Rudolf Steiner in Russia, several symbols shared by Steiner and Ivanov ("rose", "rose and cross") have been another subject of investigation. The preference for strict verse form in the lyrics of Ivanov's visionary period is interpreted as an attempt to place his own poetic creation within two traditions, a mystical and literary one. The third part of this work, Mystics of Hope and Terror, examines Ivanov's conception of Russia in connection with Mintslova's ideas of occult danger from the East. Ivanov's view of the "Russian idea" and his nationalistic idea during World War I are considered as a representation of the fear of the danger. Ivanov's interpretation of the October revolution is influenced by the theosophical concept of the "keeper of the threshold" which occurs in the context of the discourse of occult danger.

Tutkielmani käsittelee kaunokirjallisuuden suomentamisessa ilmeneviä sanastollisia käännösongelmia. Lähestymistapa on empiirinen. Tarkoitukseni on havainnoida ja pohtia, millaisia vaikeuksia kaunokirjallisuuden kääntäjä tapaa matkallaan kohti sujuvaa kerrontaa, sekä kuvailla ongelmien ratkaisuprosesseja. Tutkimusmateriaalina sovellan Dar ja Doncovan romaanin Prognoz gadostej na zavtra (2002) neljää ensimmäistä lukua ja niistä valmistamaani suomennosta Huomenna luvassa ikävyyksiä. Käsittelen teoksen suomentamista keskittyen sanaston, idiomaattisten ilmausten ja sanaleikkien aiheuttamiin käännösongelmiin. Menetelmnä on esitellä käännösprosessissa ilmenneitä ongelmakohtia sekä niihin kehiteltyjä ratkaisuja. Teoreettinen viitekehys, johon käännösratkaisuni perustuvat, koostuu pääasiassa Reissin ja Vermeerin skoposteoriasta sekä Nordin siihen tekemistä lisäyksistä. Käännösstrategian valinnassa olen käyttänyt apuvälineenä myös kirjallisuudentutkimuksen odotushorisontti-käsitettä. Työn aikana havaitsin, että kääntäjän työssään kohtaamat ongelmat ovat erittäin vaihtelevia ja niihin kehitettävät ratkaisut vaativat taitoa ja monipuolisuutta. Hyvin pohdittu ja huolellisesti valmisteltu käännösstrategia auttaa kääntäjää ratkaisujen teossa. Kulttuurisidonnaiset käännösongelmat vaativat kääntäjältä laajaa tietopohjaa lähtökulttuurista sekä hyviä tiedonhakutaitoja, ratkaisujen on oltava luovia ja kekseliäitä, sillä valmiita ratkaisuja ei ole olemassa. Ratkaisujen kehittelyssä on otettava huomioon, että ilmaus on adekvaattinen lause- ja virkeyhteyden lisäksi myös koko tekstin rakenteessa. Doncovan tuotanto oli kiinnostava tutkimuskohde kirjojen elävän kielenkäytön ja arjen kuvauksen takia. Jatkossa tutkimusta voisi keskittää tarkemmin johonkin tässä työssä tutkituista aloista tai tutkia esimerkiksi puhekielen konventioeroja. Doncovan tuotanto voisi tarjota kiinnostavaa tutkimusmateriaalia myös muiden alojen, esimerkiksi yhteiskuntatieteen, tutkijoille.

Puhutun kielen segmentointiin ei ole olemassa kaikkiin tarkoituksiin sopivaa, yleisesti hyväksyttyä ja toimivaa menetelmä - kirjoitettu kieli segmentoituu lauseiksi ja virkkeiksi, mutta puhetta segmentoidaan monin eri tavoin tilanteesta ja tarkoituksesta riippuen. Tähän on vaikuttanut kirjoitetun kielen keskeinen asema kielitieteellisessä tutkimuksessa: kirjoitusta on tutkittu enemmän ja kauemmin kuin puhetta, ja lisäksi kirjoitettu kieli vaikuttaa ihmisten kielikäsityksiin myös tiedostamattomalla tasolla, joten puhetta on vasta viime aikoina alettu tarkastella sen omista lähtökohdista käsin. Pro gradu -tutkielmassani vertaan keskenään kolmea puhutun kielen segmentointitapaa, jotka perustuvat erilaisiin teorioihin puheen luonteesta. Ensimmäinen on pohjoismaiseen Talsyntax-projektiin perustuva puhtaasti syntaktinen analyysimalli, jonka mukaiset segmentit ovat syntaktisesti itsenäisiä makrosyntagmoja. Toinen on Wallace Chafen ajattelua mukaileva kognitiivisperustainen segmentointitapa, jossa puheen katsotaan koostuvan ihmisen kognition toimintaa heijastavista ajatusyksiköistä. Kolmas malli perustuu David Brazilin teoriaan, jossa intonaatio ja kommunikaatio liittyvät olennaisesti toisiinsa, ja tämn mallin mukaan puhe segmentoituu kommunikaation kannalta merkityksellisiksi intonaatiojaksoiksi. Mallien vertailupohjana toimii erilaisista puhetilanteista koostuva 15 minuutin puhekorpus, jonka olen segmentoinut kaikkien kolmen mallin mukaisesti ja verrannut segmentointituloksia toisiinsa. Tutkimukseni osoittaa, että intonaatioon, kognitioon ja syntaksiin pohjautuvat segmentointitavat tuottavat hyvin samantapaisia tuloksia: segmenttien rajakohdista suurin osa on kaikkien kolmen segmentointitavan mukaisia. Erityisesti intonaatioon ja syntaksiin perustuvien analyysien tulokset ovat hyvin samankaltaisia, kun taas kognitiivispohjaisen segmentointitavan mukaiset tulokset eroavat muista enemmän ja se on myös tulkinnanvaraisempi. Kun puhuttu teksti segmentoidaan sekä intonaatiojaksoiksi että makrosyntagmoiksi, syntyvistä segmenteistä on molempien segmentointitapojen suhteen yhteneviä noin 85 % ja niihin kuuluu kaikista tekstin sanoista lähes 60 %. Eri segmentointitapojen suhteen yhteneviä segmenttejä ovat tyypillisesti minimipalautteet ja muut lyhyet puheenvuorot, ja lisäksi yhtenevyys on tyypillistä kysymyksille sekä puhujan ja puheenaiheen vaihtumiskohdille. Epäyhtenevyyttä puolestaan esiintyy lähinnä tilanteissa, joissa sama henkilö on pitkään yhtäjaksoisesti äänessä: mitä pidempi yhtenäinen puhejakso, sitä vaikeampi puhujan on hahmottaa sitä kokonaisuutena, joten sellaisiin muodostuu helpommin intonationaalisia tai syntaktisia epäjohdonmukaisuuksia. Tuloksista voidaan päätellä, että intonaatio ja syntaksi sekä jossain märin myös kognitio liittyvät olennaisesti toisiinsa puhutussa kielessä. Jos tarkoituksena on löytää yleisesti hyväksyttävä ja toimiva puhutun kielen segmentointitapa, intonationaalis-syntaktinen segmentointi vaikuttaisi olevan hyvä lähtökohta. The thesis is connected with death, memory and ancestor commemoration during the Merovingian Period, the Viking Age and the beginning of the Crusade Period (AD 550-1150) in Finland. During this time, cremation was the dominant burial rite. It was not until the end of the Viking Age that inhumation became more common but both cremations and inhumations are performed even at the same sites throughout the time. Three different burial types 1) cremation cemeteries below level ground, 2) inhumation burials and 3) water burials are discussed in five articles. I consider these burial forms from three different viewpoints; collectivity-individuality, visibility-invisibility and cremation-inhumation. The thesis also discusses the topics of memory, memorialisation and monument re-use, which have been neglected subjects in Finnish archaeology until now. Both cremation cemeteries below level ground and inhumation burials have been re-used during their time of usage, and on most occasions are situated in a landscape that is overlaid by other monuments as well. The main questions of the thesis are: What kinds of ritual behaviour can we detect in the burials during the period (AD 550-1150)? How did people perceive the moraine hills that functioned as burial places? What kind of re-use can be detected in the Iron Age cemeteries? Why have ancient sites and artefacts been re-used? This thesis shows that it is possible to claim that both artefact and site re-use is a much more widespread phenomenon than has previously been thought in Finnish archaeology. It is also a conscious and deliberate behaviour that can be related to an ancestor cult and commemoration of the dead. The funerary rituals during this time period show great variation and complex, both regionally and nationally. Not only have the dead been buried using elaborate rituals, they have also been mourned and commemorated in intricate ways that proves that death was not an end product, but the start of something new.

Constructive (intuitionist, anti-realist) semantics has thus far been lacking an adequate concept of truth in infinity concerning factual (i.e., empirical, non-mathematical) sentences. One consequence of this problem is the difficulty of incorporating inductive reasoning in constructive semantics. It is not possible to formulate a notion for probable truth in infinity if there is no adequate notion of what truth in infinity is. One needs a notion of a constructive possible world based on sensory experience. Moreover, a constructive probability measure must be defined over these constructively possible empirical worlds. This study defines a particular kind of approach to the concept of truth in infinity for Rudolf Carnap's inductive logic. The new approach is based on truth in the consecutive finite domains of individuals. This concept will be given a constructive interpretation. What can be verifiably said about an empirical statement with respect to this concept of truth, will be explained, for which purpose a constructive notion of epistemic probability will be introduced. The aim of this study is also to improve Carnap's inductive logic. The study addresses the problem of justifying the use of an "inductivist" method in Carnap's lambda-continuum. A correction rule for adjusting the inductive method itself in the course of obtaining evidence will be introduced. Together with the constructive interpretation of probability, the correction rule yields positive prior probabilities for universal generalizations in infinite domains.

The subject of my research is the romantic dating culture, the practice of 'going with', among preadolescents ('tweens') in Finland during the 1990s. Preadolescence is a cultural construction of the post-industrial period, experienced by school students between the ages of 7 to 13. Deemed by researchers as a shallow, unchallenging and uninteresting period, it has been shadowed in previous studies by early childhood and puberty. This study combines paradigms of the folkloristic research of children's lore, which began in the 1970s, with those of later, turn-of-the-century girls study. The phenomena of romantic girl culture are studied in several ways, through ample and varied subject materials collected in different places at different times. The research material was collected directly from schoolchildren through interviews, questionnaires and the observations of preadolescents' behavior in discos, among other methods. Part of the material consists of reminiscent thematic writings and parts have been quoted from tween message boards. A general picture of romantic preadolescent dating culture is formed in this study from five previously published articles and a summary. The influence of western culture, with its respect for relationships, is evident in tween dating culture. Seven- to thirteen-year olds use the elements of the society around them to construct an appropriate way for themselves to 'go out' with someone. Many expressions in preadolescent dating culture are contrary to the models of adult relationships. For example, a couple isn't necessarily expected to meet each other even once, or the other party, the boy, doesn't even need to know he's dating someone. Girls organize and experience relationships by playing card fortune-telling, calculating 'Love Percentages', and other methods. Categorizing tween dating culture and its related emotional qualities from an adult point of view as simply a play is one example of the hierarchical system of generations where childhood emotions, actions and conceptions of reality aren't valued as highly as the 'real life' of adults. Lowest on the totem pole are little girls, who in this study get their voices backed up by the researcher's adulthood and research-based sisterhood. This thesis concerns Swedish and Finland-Swedish brochures to families with children, presenting family allowances from the social insurance institutions in the two countries. The aim of the study is to analyse what meanings are conveyed with reference to the conceivable reader and the institution in the brochures. The material consists of information brochures in Swedish from Kela, the social insurance institution of Finland, and Försäkringskassan, the Swedish social insurance agency, issued during 2003–2006. The general theoretical framework is systemic-functional linguistics (SFL) as presented by Halliday & Matthiessen (2004) and Holmberg & Karlsson (2006). The study consists of a quantitative study of the lexical choices of the social insurance brochures. Furthermore, a qualitative process and participant analysis is annotated with the UAM Corpus tool and the results are quantified. Speech functions and modal auxiliaries are analysed qualitatively. The analysis shows that material and relational processes are most common. The relational and verbal processes are used more in the Sweden-Swedish brochures, while the material processes are more common in the Finland-Swedish brochures. The participants in the brochures are the institution, mentioned by its name, and the conceivable reader, directly addressed with “you” (du). In addition, the referent “child” is often mentioned. The participants assigned for the reader are Actor, Receiver, Carrier and Speaker. In the Finland-Swedish texts, the reader is often an Actor, while the reader in the Sweden-Swedish texts is a Carrier. Thus, the conceivable reader is an active participant who takes care of his or her own matters using the internet, communicates actively to the institution and has legal rights and obligations. The institution is visible in the texts but does not have an active role as the name of the institution is mostly used in circumstances. The institution is not often a participant, but when it is, it is Actor, Receiver, Listener and Carrier, expecting the clients to address it. Speech functions are performed in different ways. For instance, questions structure the reading process and commands are realised by modal auxiliaries, not by imperatives. The most common modal auxiliary is kan (can, may), and another common auxiliary is ska (shall, must). Statements are surrounded by subordinate clauses and adverbs that describe situations and criteria. The results of the study suggest that the brochures in the two countries are similar, in particular when produced in similar ways, that is, when the Finland-Swedish texts are not translated. Existing differences reflect the differences in the institutions, the social insurance systems and the cultural contexts. This study discusses the conceptual metaphors of Inari Saami, an endangered, indigenous, Finno-Ugrian language spoken in northern Finland. The research focuses on systematical mappings between source and target domains in conventional Inari Saami metaphors and metonymies. The research material consists of the Inarinsaamen idiomisanakirja [Inari Saami idiom dictionary] which has been compiled by the author in collaboration with an Inari Saami co-author; the Inarilappisches Wörterbuch; Inarinsaamelaista kansantietoutta [Inari Saami folk knowledge]; and Aanaarkiela čájttuzeh [Inari Saami sample texts]. The metaphors and metonymies found in these literary sources are divided into categories on the basis of the target domains and according to the classic model of Lakoff ja Johnson (1980). This method reveals the systematical recurrence of source domains inside each category and thus discovers the systematical patterns of metaphoric mapping, the conceptual metaphors . As a result 44 conceptual metaphors and 16 conceptual metonymies are presented through approximately 500 glossed examples. These findings are discussed against the background of what is known about the cognitive and neural processing of metaphors on the one hand, and what is known about Inari Saami culture on the other. This theoretical framework highlights culture as the underlying force behind conceptual metaphors. The recurring metonymies seem to follow a culturally salient indexicality. For example, the Inari Saami conceptual metonymy TIME IS NATURE reflects the seasonal changes in the year s cycle, which was the salient index of time in traditional Inari Saami culture. The recurring metaphors, for their part, follow a culturally salient iconicity. The conceptual metaphor PRIDE IS ANTLERS is based on an iconicity which is experienced and interpreted by the Inari Saami. A proud person is associated with a reindeer who shows off his impressive antlers. The conceptual metaphor/metonymy seems to be a reflection of culture rather than a cognitive means of understanding an abstract domain in terms of a concrete domain, as hypothesized by certain theoreticians. Repeating this study with other languages may lead to the possibility of typologizing the metaphorical systems of the world s languages and understanding the diversity of metaphor systems in the endangered languages of the world.
