The twin defects in Ce:YAP were investigated by using synchrotron radiation topography and etch figures. The results show that the twins are {101} and {121} types, and the exchange of neighboring lattice parameters is considered to be the intrinsic factor for twining. Based on such analysis, the twin structure model was established. Otherwise, the growth experiment results show that the abrupt change of growth rate during shoulder formation tends to cause twining.

A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study has been carried out to uncover how dislocations and twins accommodate large plastic strains and accumulate in very small nanocrystalline Ni grains during low-temperature deformation. We illustrate dislocation patterns that suggest preferential deformation and nonuniform defect storage inside the nanocrystalline grain. Dislocations are present in individual and dipole configurations. Most dislocations are of the 60 degrees type and pile up on (111) slip planes. Various deformation responses, in the forms of dislocations and twinning, may simultaneously occur inside a nanocrystalline grain. Evidence for twin boundary migration has been obtained. The rearrangement and organization of dislocations, sometimes interacting with the twins, lead to the formation of subgrain boundaries, subdividing the nanograin into mosaic domain structures. The observation of strain (deformation)-induced refinement contrasts with the recently reported stress-assisted grain growth in nanocrystalline metals and has implications for understanding the stability and deformation behavior of these highly nonequilibrium materials.

X-ray reflectivity curves show bi-crystal (twin) characteristics. Defect segregations at the twin boundary can be seen, whereas stress is relaxed at the edge of the boundary. Relaxation of the stress resulted in the formation of twins and other defects. As a result of the formation of such defects, a defect-free and stress-free zone or low defect density and small stress zone is created around the defects. Stress, chemical stoichiometry deviation and non-homogeneous distribution of impurities are the key factors that cause twins in LEC InP crystal growth. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Experimentally observed X-ray reflectivity curves show bi-crystal(twin) characteristics. The study revealed that there was defect segregation at the twin boundary. Stress was relaxed at the edge of the boundary. Relaxation of the stress resulted in formation of twin and other defects. As a result of formation of such defects, a defect-free and stress-free zone or low defect density and small stress zone is created around the defects. So a twin model was proposed to explain the experimental results. Stress(mainly thermal stress), chemical stoichiometry deviation and impurities nonhomogeneous distributions are the key factors that cause twins in LEC InP crystal growth. Twins on (111) face in LEC InP crystal were studied. Experimental evidence of above mentioned twin model and suggestions on how to get twin-free LEC InP single crystals will be discussed.

We report the observation of a deformation twin formed by a recently proposed self-thickening, cross-slip twinning mechanism. This observation verifies one more twinning mechanism, in addition to those reported before, in nanocrystalline face-centered-cubic metals. In this mechanism, once the first Shockley partial is emitted from a grain boundary, and cross slips onto another slip plane, a deformation twin could nucleate and grow in both the primary and cross-slip planes without requiring the nucleation of additional Shockley partials from the grain boundary.

The stress-strain relations of nanocrystalline twin copper with variously sized grains and twins are studied by using FEM simulations based on the conventional theory of mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity (CMSG). A model of twin lamellae strengthening zone is proposed and a cohesive interface model is used to simulate grain-boundary sliding and separation. Effects of material parameters on stress-strain curves of polycrystalline twin copper are studied in detail. Furthermore, the effects of both twin lamellar spacing and twin lamellar distribution on the stress-strain relations are investigated under tension loading. The numerical simulations show that both the strain gradient effect and the material hardening increase with decreasing the grain size and twin lamellar spacing. The distribution of twin lamellae has a significant influence on the overall mechanical properties, and the effect is reduced as both the grain size and twin lamellar spacing decrease. Finally, the FEM prediction results are compared with the experimental data.

This letter addresses the issue of deformation mechanisms and mechanical tensile behavior of the twinned metal nanowires using atomistic simulations. Free surfaces are always the preferential dislocation nucleation sites in the initial inelastic deformation stage, while with further plastic deformation, twin boundary interfaces will act as sources of dislocations with the assistance of the newly formed defects. The smaller the twin boundary spacing, the higher the yielding stresses of the twinned nanowires. Twin boundaries, which serve both as obstacles to dislocation motion and dislocation sources, can lead to hardening effects and contribute to the tensile ductility. This work illustrates that the mechanical properties of metal nanowires could be controlled by tailoring internal growth twin structures. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Growth-induced defects in Yb:FAP crystals grown by the Czochralski method have been investigated by optical microscopy, chemical etching, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Anisotropic etching features have been observed on two FAP crystal planes: (0001) and (1010). The shape of etch pits on the (0001) plane is hexagonal, while the etch pits on the (1010) plane have a variety of irregular shapes. It is also found that the density of etch pit varies along the boule. Based on the experimental observations, the formation mechanisnis of growth defects are discussed, and methods for reducing the growth-induced defect concentration is proposed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. A simple and practical model is used to analyse the influence of substrate surface defect on the optical characteristics of a single-layer coating. A single-layer coating is prepared and its optical properties are fitted. Some explanations for the origin of the transition layer are presented. It is concluded that there is a transition layer forming between the substrate and coating, which is attributed to substrate surface defects, and its refractive index change is nearly of linearity.

Optical filters composed of Ag, Al2O3, and ZnSe films were prepared on BK7 substrates by evaporation. By employing spectrophotometer, microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) analysis, the moisture-dependent stability of the samples was tested. The experimental results revealed that filter failure often occurs initially at defect sites. Small sputtering particles and pinhole are found to be two types of defects that induced the optical coating filter failure. The mechanisms of the defect-induced failure of the filters also are discussed in the article. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The initiation of laser damage within optical coatings can be better understood by thermal-mechanical modeling of coating defects. The result of this modeling shows that a high-temperature rise and thermal stress can be seen just inside the nodular defect compared to surrounding coating layers. The temperature rise and thermal stress tend to increase with seed diameter. Shallower seed tend to cause higher temperature rise and greater thermal stress. There is a critical seed depth at which thermal stress is largest. The composition of the seed resulting from different coating-material emission during evaporation can affect the temperature rise and thermal stress distribution.
