Based on the mass balance equations of solute transfer in the radial chromatographic column, the theoretical expression to describe the column efficiency and shape of elution profile is obtained under linear isotherm case. Moreover, the tendency for the variation of column efficiency and symmetry of peak profile is systematically discussed. The results showed that in radial chromatography the relationship between the column efficiency and volumetric flow rate is similar with that relationship in axial chromatography; relatively high column efficiency still can be obtained under high flow rate in radial chromatography. Accompanying the increase of retention factor of solutes and injection time, the column efficiency decreases monotonously. The effect of column diameter and column length on the column efficiency interfere with each other. It is more advantageous to increase the column efficiency by applying columns with larger column diameter and shorter column length. According to the discussion of the effect of diffusion on the column efficiency, radial chromatography is proved to be suitable for the separation of samples with relatively high diffusion coefficient, which predicts its obvious advantage in the preparative separation of samples such as proteins and DNA.

A new set of continuous superresolution filters is proposed which exhibits a radial superresolution performance with an extended depth of focus in an optical system by properly choosing the design parameters. Numerical simulation results of the performance parameters of the superresolution gain, the radial central core size, the Strehl ratio, the side-lobe factor and the depth of focus with different design parameters for the optimized patterns are displayed. We also give a design example for this kind of filter characterized by a birefringent element inserted between two parallel polarizers. This kind of filter would be useful in fields such as optical data storage systems.

In this paper an electrically controllable radial birefringent pupil filter is proposed. It consists of two polarizers and an improved electrically controllable optical azimuth rotator which has two lambda/4 retarders, one electro-optical crystal and one radial birefringent crystal. The evolution and distribution of polarization states of this pupil filter are discussed. The most interesting and useful advantage of such a structure is that the characteristic of transverse superresolution and axial extended focal depth or focal shift can be obtained merely by controlling the applied voltage on the electro-optical crystal. The radial birefringent crystal azimuth angle cooperating with different electrical inductive phase differences will determine the transverse and axial intensity distribution. It is shown that for particular ranges of electrical inductive phase difference it is possible to obtain transverse superresolution along with extended focal depth or with a focal shift.

The radial continuous transmittance filter is presented to realize transverse superresolution. It consists of two parallel polarizers and a radial birefringent element sandwiched between of them. By adjusting the angle between optical axis of the radial birefringent element and the polarization direction of the polarizers, transverse superresolution can be realized. But transverse superresolution is obtained at the cost of the axial resolution and the increase of the side-lobes in strength. So we then mend such filter, with it not only enhance the transverse resolution but also suppress the influence of the side-lobes and the reduction of the axial resolution. At the same time, the Strehl ratio increases. The advantage of such a filter used in superresolution technique is that it is easy to fabricate because its fabrication does not deal with the variation of the phase. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. Reshaping of a Gaussian laser beam into a uniform or other intensity distribution is required for various applications. The laser beam shaping system with a radial birefringent filter is presented in this paper. With such a system the Gaussian beams can be transformed into uniform or annular beams. The theory and simulation of the proposed systems are described in detail. The primary advantage of such a system is that the out beam pro. le can be tunable with the rotation of the radial birefringent element.

An analytical expression of a radial laser array for flat-topped beam is derived based on the generalized Collins formula. The intensity distribution of the resulting beam focused by a lens at the focus plane, for phase-locked and nonphase-locked cases, is studied numerically. The effect of the Fresnel number and normalized radius on intensity distribution for phase-locked and nonphase-locked cases is also presented. It is found that intensity distribution for nonphase-locked case is much less sensible to the Fresnel number and normalized radius than that of phase-locked case. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
