Body length, instar duration, fecundity, and survival rate of Moina irrasa from a subtropical Chinese lake were studied at three food concentrations (4, 8, and 40 mg/L, wet weight) and six temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35degreesC) in the laboratory. Body length tended to decrease with increase of temperature, while the trend was reversed as food concentration rose. M. irrasa had three juvenile instars, except there were four at 10degreesC, and the number of adult instars showed great variation (3-15). Water temperature and food concentration both affected the duration time of adult instars. The largest broods were from the third to sixth adult instars, depending on food and temperature, and the mean highest number of offspring per brood was 56 at 25degreesC. A significant relationship between body length and brood size appeared at high (40 mg/L) and medium (8 mg/L) food concentrations, while there was no significant relationship at low food concentration except at 25 degreesC. The intrinsic rate of population increase ranged between 0.104 and 1.825 ind./day.

Low temperature (LT) AlN interlayers were used to effectively reduce the tension stress and micro-cracks on the surface of the GaN epilayer grown on Si (111) substrate. Optical Microscopy (OM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Surface Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were employed to characterize these samples grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). In addition, wet etching method was used to evaluate the defect of the GaN epilayer. The results demonstrate that the morphology and crystalline properties of the GaN epilayer strongly depend on the thickness, interlayer number and growth temperature of the LT AlN interlayer. With the optimized LT AlN interlayer structures, high quality GaN epilayers with a low crack density can be obtained. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Synthesis and temperature-dependent near-band-edge emission of chain-like Mg-doped ZnO nanoparticles
Resumo:
Chain-like Mg-doped ZnO nanoparticles were prepared using a wet chemical method combined with subsequent heat treatment. The blueshifted near-band-edge emission of the doped ZnO sample with respect to the undoped one was investigated by temperature-dependent photoluminescence. Based on the energy shift of the free-exciton transition, a band gap enlargement of similar to 83 meV was estimated, which seems to result in the equivalent shift of the bound-exciton transition. At 50 K, the transformation from the donor-acceptor-pair to free-to-acceptor emissions was observed for both the undoped and doped samples. The results show that Mg doping leads to the decrease of the acceptor binding energy. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

This paper describes the design and fabrication process of a two-dimensional GaAs-based photonic crystal nanocavity and analyzes the optical characterization of cavity modes at room temperature. Single InAs/InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) layer was embedded in a GaAs waveguide layer grown on an Al0.7Ga0.3As layer and GaAs substrate. The patterning of the structure and the membrane release were achieved by using electron-beam lithography, reaction ion etching, inductively coupled plasma etching and selective wet etching. The micro-luminescence spectrum is recorded from the fabricated nanocavities, and it is found that some high-order cavity modes are clearly observed besides the lowest-order resonant mode is exhibited in spite of much high rate of nonradiative recombination. The variance of resonant modes is also discussed as a function of r/a ratio and will be used in techniques aimed to improve the probability of achieving spectral coupling of a single QD to a cavity mode.

The influence of deposition, annealing conditions, and etchants on the wet etch rate of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) silicon nitride thin film is studied. The deposition source gas flow rate and annealing temperature were varied to decrease the etch rate of SiN_x:H by HF solution. A low etch rate was achieved by increasing the SiH_4 gas flow rate or annealing temperature, or decreasing the NH_3 and N_2 gas flow rate. Concen-trated, buffered, and dilute hydrofluoric acid were utilized as etchants for SiO_2 and SiN_x:H. A high etching selectivity of SiO_2 over SiN_x:H was obtained using highly concentrated buffered HF.

GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot arrays with different dot sizes made by different fabrication processes were studied in this work. In comparison with the reference quantum well, photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the samples at low temperature have demonstrated that PL peak positions shift to higher energy side due to quantization confinement effects and the blue-shift increases with decreasing dot size, PL linewidths are broadened and intensities are much reduced. It is also found that wet chemical etching after reactive ion etching can improve optical properties of the quantum dot arrays.

Organic-inorganic hybrid nanofibers are successfully synthesized by incorporating 3,3 ',5,5 '-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2PtCl6 at room temperature. The morphology and size can be simply controlled by tuning the molar ratio and initial concentration of reactants. A possible formation mechanism was suggested on the basis of the experimental results. The optical properties were investigated and the as-obtained product displays a strong fluorescence emission at room temperature that may be promising for applications in the fabrication of photoelectric materials. The shape-con trolled synthesis of micrometer- sized gold nanocoralline was simply realized via a wet-chemical approach. The as-prepared hierarchical gold nanocorallines (HGNs) on the solid substrate were initially applied in SERS analysis with 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as the probe molecule. The HGN-modified glass substrate exhibits a higher SERS effect (one order of magnitude higher) than the aggregated gold nanoparticle (similar to 25 nm)-modified glass substrate.

1. This paper investigated the bioenergetic responses of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (wet weights of 36.5 +/- 1.2 g) to different water temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C) in the laboratory. 2. Results showed that theoretically the optimal temperatures for energy intake and scope for growth (SFG) of sub-adult A. japonicus was at 15.6 and 16.0 degrees C, respectively. The aestivation threshold temperature for this life-stage sea cucumber could be 29.0 degrees C by taking feeding cessation as the indication of aestivation. 3. Our data suggests that A. japonicus is thermo-sensitive to higher temperature, which prevents it from colonising sub-tropical coastal zones. Therefore, water temperature plays an important role in its southernmost distribution limit in China. 4. The potential impact of global ocean warming on A. japonicus might be a northward shift in the geographical distribution. Crown Copyright (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd, All rights reserved.

We used an eddy covariance technique to measure evapotranspiration and carbon flux over two very different growing seasons for a typical steppe on the Inner Mongolia Plateau, China. The rainfall during the 2004 growing season (344.7 mm) was close to the annual average (350.43 mm). In contrast, precipitation during the 2005 growing season was significantly lower than average (only 126 mm). The wet 2004 growing season had a higher peak evapotranspiration (4 mm day(-1)) than did the dry 2005 growing season (3.3 mm day(-1)). In 2004, latent heat flux was mainly a consumption resource for net radiation, accounting for similar to 46% of net radiation. However, sensible heat flux dominated the energy budget over the whole growing season in 2005, accounting for 60% of net radiation. The evaporative rate (LE/R-n) dropped by a factor of four from the non-soil stress to soil water limiting conditions. Maximum half-hourly CO2 uptake was -0.68 mg m(-2) s(-1) and maximum ecosystem exchange was 4.3 g CO2 m(-2) day(-1) in 2004. The 2005 drought growing stage had a maximum CO2 exchange value of only -0.22 mg m(-2) s(-1) and a continuous positive integrated-daily CO2 flux over the entire growing season, i.e. the ecosystem became a net carbon source. Soil respiration was temperature dependent when the soil was under non-limiting soil moisture conditions, but this response declined with soil water stress. Water availability and a high vapor pressure deficit severely limited carbon fixing of this ecosystem; thus, during the growing season, the capacity to fix CO2 was closely related to both timing and frequency of rainfall events. Simultaneous nitrobenzene and phenol wet air oxidation was investigated in a stainless autoclave at temperature range of 180-220 ° C and 1.0 MPa oxygen partial pressure. Compared with the single oxidation of nitrobenzene under the same conditions, the presence of phenol in the reaction media greatly improved the removal efficiency of nitrobenzene. The effect of temperature on the reaction was studied. Phenol was considered as a type of initiator in the nitrobenzene oxidation. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
