Thiazolyl heterocyclic azo dye and its metal (Ni2+, Co2+)-azo complexes were synthesized. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, UV-VIS absorption spectra, FT-IR, H-1 NMR and MALDI-MS. The thermal properties of metal complexes were studied by DSC-TGA. The optical constants (complex refractive index N=n + ik) and thickness of the complex thin films on polished single-crystal silicon substrates were investigated on a scanning ellipsometer. Results indicate that thiazolyl metal-azo complexes possess good optical and thermal properties. They would be a promising recording medium candidate for NVD with the Super-resolution near field structure (Super-RENS) technology. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bulk-lasses have been prepared in the TeO2-ZnO-ZnCl2 systems. Their characteristic temperatures were determined and analyzed. Raman and FT-IR spectra were used to analyze the effect of ZnCl2 on the structure and spectral properties of tellurite glasses and OH- groups in this glass system. The spectroscopic properties including absorption spectra, emission cross-sections and fluorescence lifetimes of Yb3+ in TeO2-ZnO-ZnCl2 were measured and calculated. It is demonstrated that the progressive replacement less than 20 mol% of TeO2 by ZnCl2 improves the thermal stability, removes the OH- groups, turns TeO4 bipyramidal arrangement into TeO3 (and/or TeO3+1) trigonal pyramids structures and results in the decrease of the symmetry of the structure, which increases the emission cross-sections and lifetimes. But when the content of ZnCl2 up to 30 mol%, the glass system becomes more hygroscopic and introduces more OH- groups, which decrease the emission cross-sections and shorten the lifetimes. The results show that the glass system with (TeO2)-Te-69-(ZnO)-Zn-10-20ZnCl(2)-1Yb(2)O(3) is a desirable component for active laser media for high power generation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Polyurea microcapsules about 2.5 mum in diameter containing phase change material for thermal energy storage application were synthesized and characterized by interfacial polycondensation method with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate and ethylenediamine as monomers in an emulsion system. Hexadecane was used as a phase change material and OP, which is nonionic surfactant, and used as an emulsifier. The chemical structure and thermal behavior of the microcapsules were investigated by FTIR and thermal analysis respectively. The results show encapsulated hexadecane has a good potential as a solar energy storage material.

Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) hybrid membranes doped with different weight ratio of phosphotungstic acid (PWA) were prepared by the casting procedure, as well as PWA as a catalyst for sol-gel process of KH550. The chemical structures of hybrid membranes were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphology of hybrid membranes was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results had proved the uniform and homogeneous distribution of KH550 and PWA in these hybrid membranes.

The hydrophobic carbon nanotubes-ionic liquid (CNTs-IL) get forms a stable modified film on hydrophobic graphite electrode surface. Laccase immobilized on the CNTs-IL gel film modified electrode shows good thermal stability and enhanced electrochemical catalytic ability. The optimal bioactivity occurs with increasing temperature and this optimum is 20 degrees C higher in comparison to free laccase. The improvement of laccase thermal stability may be due to the microenvironment of hydrophobic CNTs-IL gel on graphite electrode surface. On the other hand, the sensitive detection of oxygen has been achieved due to the feasibility of oxygen reduction by both of laccase and nanocomposite of CNTs-IL gel. Furthermore, the laccase hybrid nanocomposite also shows the fast electrochemical response and high sensitivity to the inhibitors of halide ions with the approximate IC50 of 0.01, 4.2 and 87.5 mM for the fluoride, chloride and bromide ions, respectively. It implies the feasibility of laccase modified electrode as an inhibition biosensor to detect the modulators of laccase.

Polyelectrolyte-protected gold nanoparticles have been facilely obtained by heating an amine-containing polyelectrolyte/HAuCl4 aqueous solution without the additional step of introducing other reducing agents. All experimental data indicate that different initial molar ratio of polyelectrolyte to gold can lead to the formation of dispersed nanoparticles, quasi one-dimensional aggregates of nanoparticles or bulk metal deposits. More importantly, the growth kinetics of gold particles thus formed can be tuned by changing the initial molar ratio of polyelectrolyte to gold.

The functional polystyrene, (Cl-PS)(2)-CHCOOCH2CH2OH ( designated as XPSt and coded P2) was prepared by ATRP at 130(0)C using CuCl and bipyridine as catalysts, 2,2-dichloro acetate-ethylene glycol (DCAG) as multifunctional initiator and THF as solvent. 4-Nitoroaniline azomethine-4' phenol (P1) as chromophores were covalently linked to the functional end groups of the polymer by using simple displacement reaction. The functional polystyrenes, namely XPSt (P2) and (PS)(2)-CHCOOCH2CH2OH, designated as X-PSt and coded P3 and their post-derivatives, namely, DXPSt (P4) and DX-PSt (P5) respectively were characterized by IR, NMR and UV spectroscopies, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and XRD studies. DSC showed that incorporation of chromophores in the side chains of polymers towards the polystyrene moiety increases the rigidity of the polymer and subsequently, its glass transition temperature; however the incorporation of side chain towards the alcoholic functional group decreases the glass transition temperature. The post derivatives do not play any significant role to increase the thermal stability ( TGA).

Thermal behaviour of gamma-irradiated plain PA1010 and PA1010 containing different amounts of difunctional cross-linking agent BMI was investigated. In DSC endo- and exotherm, it was found that during irradiation, the presence of BMI markedly changes the melting and crystallisation characteristics of PA1010. A supposition that the network of BMI-containing specimens is rather loose in structure was proposed to explain the discrepancy in thermal behaviour between these two kinds of specimens. The supposition was further ascertained by the less brittleness in mechanical property of specimens containing BMI. Besides, the complexity of the thermal behaviour of gamma-irradiated PA1010 was discussed and attributed mainly to the increase in sigma-e, the fold surface free energy of chain fold crystals.

Characterization, morphology and thermal properties of commercial ethylene-propylene block copolymers have been studied by C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.), dynamic mechanical analysis (d.m.a.) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained show that there exists some ethylene-propylene random copolymer in the block copolymers extractable by n-heptane. The possibility of forming PP-b-PE diblock copolymer is questionable on the basis of the effects of residual propene and the chain-transfer reaction in the sequential copolymerization. A difference in the thermal properties between commercial ethylene-propylene block copolymers and PP/PE blends was noticed, which cannot be used to identify PP-b-PE diblock copolymer. The multiphase structure has been confirmed by d.m.a. and SEM, with ethylene-propylene random copolymer and polyethylene forming the domains in the matrix of polypropylene.

Laminar-flow non-transferred DC plasma jets were generated by a torch with an inter-electrode insert by which the arc column was limited to a length of about 20 mm. Current–voltage characteristics, thermal efficiency and jet length, a parameter which changes greatly with the generating parameters in contrast with the almost unchangeable jet length of the turbulent plasma, were investigated systematically, by using the similarity theory combined with the corresponding experimental examination. Formulae in non-dimensional forms were derived for predicting the characteristics of the laminar plasma jet generation, within the parameter ranges where no transfer to turbulent flow occurs. Mean arc temperature in the torch channel and mean jet-flow temperature at the torch exit were obtained, and the results indicate that the thermal conductivity feature of the working gas seems to be an important factor affecting thermal efficiency of laminar plasma generation.

LaF3 thin films were prepared by thermal boat evaporation at different substrate temperatures and various deposition rates. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Lambda 900 spectrophotometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study crystal structure, transmittance and chemical composition of the coatings, respectively. Laser-induce damage threshold (LIDT) was determined by a tripled Nd:YAG laser system with a pulse width of 8 ns. It is found that the crystal structure became more perfect and the refractive index increased gradually with the temperature rising. The LIDT was comparatively high at high temperature. In the other hand, the crystallization status also became better and the refractive index increased when the deposition rate enhanced at a low level. If the rate was super rapid, the crystallization worsened instead and the refractive index would lessen greatly. On the whole, the LIDT decreased with increasing rate. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. A novel trypsin inhibitor termed BATI was purified to homogeneity from the skin extracts of toad Bufo andrewsi by successive ion-exchange, gel-filtration and reverse-phase chromatography. BATI is basic single chain glycoprotein, with apparent molecular weight of 22 kDa in SDS-PAGE. BATI is a thermal stable competitive inhibitor and effectively inhibits trypsin's catalytic activity on peptide substrate with the inhibitor constant (K-i) value of 14 nM and shows no inhibitory effect on chymotrypsin, thrombin and elastase. The N-terminal sequence of BATI is EKDSITD, which shows no similarity with other known trypsin inhibitors. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
