The ferroelectricity of rhombohedral PbTiO3 under uniaxial compression is investigated from first-principles study. Upon compression, the ferroelectricity decreases until a critical stress of -29 GPa and then increases with a further increase of the magnitude of the uniaxial compressive stress. We also find that uniaxial compression could enhance piezoelectricity and that the maximum piezoelectric coefficient d(33) occurs at sigma(33)=-49 GPa, which supports the experimentally observed piezoelectric behavior in rhombohedral Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-0.32PbTiO(3) [Q. Wan, C. Chen, and Y. P. Shen, J. Appl. Phys. 98, 024103 (2005)]. Our calculated results show that the Pb, Ti, and O atoms have different contributions to the total polarization with increasing the magnitude of uniaxial compressive stress, and that when -sigma(33)>55 GPa, the Ti atoms no longer have contributions to the polarization, which leads to the changes of ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity. Tetragonal PbTiO3 under uniaxial stress along the c-axis is investigated from first-principles. The structural parameters, polarization, and squares of the lowest optical phonon frequencies for E(1TO) and A(1)(1TO) modes at Gamma show abrupt changes near a stress sigma(c) of 1.04 GPa, which is related to the dramatic change of elastic constant c(33) resulting from the uniaxial stress applied along the c-axis. We also find that the uniaxial compressive stress could enhance the piezoelectric stress coefficients, whereas the uniaxial tensile stress could enhance the piezoelectric strain coefficients. It is also found that when the magnitude of uniaxial compressive stress sigma(33) is greater than 12 GPa, PbTiO3 is transformed to the paraelectric tetragonal phase.

Elastic constants, the bulk modulus, Young's modulus, band-gap bowing coefficients, spontaneous and piezoelectric polarizations, and piezoelectric coefficients of hexagonal AlxGa1-xN ternary alloys are calculated using first-principles methods. The fully relaxed structures and the structures subjected to homogeneous biaxial and uniaxial tension are investigated. We show that the biaxial tension in the plane perpendicular to the c axis and the uniaxial tension along the c axis all reduce the bulk modulus, whereas they reduce and enhance Young's modulus, respectively. We find that the biaxial and uniaxial tension can enhance the bowing coefficients. We also find that the biaxial tension can enhance the total polarization, while the uniaxial tension will suppress the total polarization. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

In this work a practical scheme is developed for the first-principles study of time-dependent quantum transport. The basic idea is to combine the transport master equation with the well-known time-dependent density functional theory. The key ingredients of this paper include (i) the partitioning-free initial condition and the consideration of the time-dependent bias voltages which base our treatment on the Runge-Gross existence theorem; (ii) the non-Markovian master equation for the reduced (many-body) central system (i.e., the device); and (iii) the construction of Kohn-Sham master equations for the reduced single-particle density matrix, where a number of auxiliary functions are introduced and their equations of motion (EOMs) are established based on the technique of spectral decomposition. As a result, starting with a well-defined initial state, the time-dependent transport current can be calculated simultaneously along with the propagation of the Kohn-Sham master equation and the EOMs of the auxiliary functions.

The dynamic mean-field density functional method, driven from the generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation, was applied to the mesoscopic dynamics of the multi-arms star block copolymer melts in two-dimensional lattice model. The implicit Gaussian density functional expression of a multi-arms star block copolymer chain for the intrinsic chemical potentials was constructed for the first time. Extension of this calculation strategy to more complex systems, such as hyperbranched copolymer or dendrimer, should be straightforward. The original application of this method to 3-arms block copolymer melts in our present works led to some novel ordered microphase patterns, such as hexagonal (HEX) honeycomb lattice, core-shell HEX lattice, knitting pattern, etc. The observed core-shell HEX lattice ordered structure is qualitatively in agreement with the experiment of Thomas [Macromolecules 31, 5272 (1998)].

The alternate combinational approach of genetic algorithm and neural network (AGANN) has been presented to correct the systematic error of the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. It treats the DFT as a black box and models the error through external statistical information. As a demonstration, the AGANN method has been applied in the correction of the lattice energies from the DFT calculation for 72 metal halides and hydrides. Through the AGANN correction, the mean absolute value of the relative errors of the calculated lattice energies to the experimental values decreases from 4.93% to 1.20% in the testing set. For comparison, the neural network approach reduces the mean value to 2.56%. And for the common combinational approach of genetic algorithm and neural network, the value drops to 2.15%. The multiple linear regression method almost has no correction effect here.

By viewing the non-equilibrium transport setup as a quantum open system, we propose a reduced-density-matrix based quantum transport formalism. At the level of self-consistent Born approximation, it can precisely account for the correlation between tunneling and the system internal many-body interaction, leading to certain novel behavior such as the non-equilibrium Kondo effect. It also opens a new way to construct time-dependent density functional theory for transport through large-scale complex systems. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new algorithm, representing an important advance in determination of the functional relationship, is first reported here. The algorithm is very useful and convenient for analyzing the incorporation of impurities. To show how the algorithm works, two early and well-known vapor phase epitaxy (VPE) experiments-Ashen's (Ashen, D. J.; Dean, P. J.; Hurle, D. T. J.; Mullin, J. B.; Royle, A.; White, A. M. Gallium Arsenide and Related Compounds, Institute of Physics Conference Series 24, 1974; Institute of Physics: London, 1975; p 229.), involving the doping of silicon and DiLorenzo's (DiLorenzo, J. V. J. Cryst. Growth 1972, 17, 189.), involving the mole fraction effect-are calculated to find the functional relationship between the Si contamination and the partial pressure of HCl. The calculated curves agree with the experimental results. A conclusion that the calculated values are greater than the true values has been drawn.

In this paper we study the existence of periodic solutions of asymptotically linear Hamiltonian systems which may not satisfy the Palais-Smale condition. By using the Conley index theory and the Galerkin approximation methods, we establish the existence of at least two nontrivial periodic solutions for the corresponding systems.
