The advent of nanotechnology has necessitated a better understanding of how material microstructure changes at the atomic level would affect the macroscopic properties that control the performance. Such a challenge has uncovered many phenomena that were not previously understood and taken for granted. Among them are the basic foundation of dislocation theories which are now known to be inadequate. Simplifying assumptions invoked at the macroscale may not be applicable at the micro- and/or nanoscale. There are implications of scaling hierrachy associated with in-homegeneity and nonequilibrium. of physical systems. What is taken to be homogeneous and equilibrium at the macroscale may not be so when the physical size of the material is reduced to microns. These fundamental issues cannot be dispensed at will for the sake of convenience because they could alter the outcome of predictions. Even more unsatisfying is the lack of consistency in modeling physical systems. This could translate to the inability for identifying the relevant manufacturing parameters and rendering the end product unpractical because of high cost. Advanced composite and ceramic materials are cases in point. Discussed are potential pitfalls for applying models at both the atomic and continuum levels. No encouragement is made to unravel the truth of nature. Let it be partiuclates, a smooth continuum or a combination of both. The present trend of development in scaling tends to seek for different characteristic lengths of material microstructures with or without the influence of time effects. Much will be learned from atomistic simulation models to show how results could differ as boundary conditions and scales are changed. Quantum mechanics, continuum and cosmological models provide evidence that no general approach is in sight. Of immediate interest is perhaps the establishment of greater precision in terminology so as to better communicate results involving multiscale physical events.

The problem of predicting sediment transportation by water waves is treated analytically with the rate of wave energy dissipation or wave damping. With resorting to the theory of shallow water waves and the basis of Yamamoto’s Coulomb-damped poroelastic model, the Boussinesq-type equation has been derived over a variation depth bed. For convenience Cnoidal wave is just discussed, The Cnoidal wave with complex wave length and wave velocity, which are as a function of wave frequency, water depth, permeability, Poisson’s ratio and complex elastic moduli of bed soil, is applied to analyse the rate of sediment transportation. Considering the sediment transportation depended on the shear stress near-bed or the horizontal velocity, the conclusion of Yamamoto’s experiment in clay bed has been extended to general situation. It could be figured out that the model should provide a method to avoid the undistinguishable factors during sediment transport processes and relate mass transport with the sediment peculiarities.

A simple method to suppress the zero-order diffraction in the reconstructed image of digital holography is presented. In this method, the Laplacian of a detected hologram is used instead of the hologram itself for numerical reconstruction by computing the discrete Fresnel integral. This method can significantly improve the image quality and give better resolution and higher accuracy of the reconstructed image. The main advantages of this method are its simplicity in experimental requirements and convenience in data processing. (C) 2002 Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers.

For quantum transport through mesoscopic systems, a quantum master-equation approach is developed in terms of compact expressions for the transport current and the reduced density matrix of the system. The present work is an extension of Gurvitz's approach for quantum transport and quantum measurement, namely, to finite temperature and arbitrary bias voltage. Our derivation starts from a second-order cumulant expansion of the tunneling Hamiltonian; then follows the conditional average over the electrode reservoir states. As a consequence, in the usual weak-tunneling regime, the established formalism is applicable for a wide range of transport problems. The validity of the formalism and its convenience in application are well illustrated by a number of examples.

Radiant heat conversion performance dominated by the active layer of Ga0.84In0.16As0.14Sb0.86 diode has been systematically investigated based on an analytic absorption spectrum, which is suggested here by numerically fitting the limited experimental data. For the concerned diode configuration, our calculation demonstrates that the optimal base doping is 3-4 x 10(17) cm(-3), which is less sensitive to the variation of the external radiation spectrum. Given the scarcity of the alloy elements, an economical device configuration of the 0.2-0.6 mu m emitter and the 4-6 mu m base would be particularly acceptable because the corresponding conversion efficiency cannot exhibit discouraging degradation in comparison to the one for the optimal structure, the thickness of which may be up to 10 mu m. More importantly, the method we suggested here to calculate alloy absorption can be easily transferred to other composition, thus bringing great convenience for design or optimization of the optoelectronic device formed by these alloys.

Pen-based user interface (PUI) has drawn significant interest, owing to its intuitiveness and convenience. While much of the research focuses on the technology, the usability of a PUI has been relatively low since human factors have not been considered sufficiently. Scenario-centric designs are ideal ways to improve usability. However, such designs possess some problems in practical use. To cope with these design issues, the concept of “interface scenarios” is proposed in to facilitate the interface design, and to help users understand the interaction process in such designs. The proposed scenario-focused development method for PUI is coupled with a practical application to show its effectiveness and usability.

In this paper, we report the construction and application of a sol-gel derived carbon composite electrode (CCE) as an amperometric detector for capillary electrophoresis. The electrochemical properties were characterized and compared with those of conventional carbon fiber and carbon paste electrode (CPE). Experimental results show that peak-to-peak noise of CCE was about 20% of CPE and electrode capacitance was comparatively low. When applied to the detection of dopamine and epinephrine, the optimal detection potential for CCE was 0.1 V lower than CPE under the same separation conditions; CCE with diameter of 75 and 100 mum could achieve a low detection limit of 3.10(-8) and 6.10(-8) M for the detection of epinephrine, which approaching that of the 33-mum diameter carbon fiber electrode. Also, the linearity for epinephrine at CCE was more than two orders of magnitude, which was slightly wider than that of carbon fiber electrode. Applications to real sample analysis were tested by the determination of betahistine dihydrochloride in tablets and human urine. Using CCE with diameter less than or equal to100 mum as an amperometric detector after capillary electrophoresis separation, a low detection limit and a wide linear range combined with excellent reproducibility were obtained. This CCE possesses of many advantages, namely, convenience, ease of fabrication, low cost and high stability.

With the aid of thermodynamics of Gibbs, the expression of the spinodal was derived for the polydisperse polymer-solvent system in the framework of Sanchez-Lacombe Lattice Fluid Theory (SLLFT). For convenience, we considered that a model polydisperse polymer contains three sub-components. According to our calculation, the spinodal depends on both weight-average ((M) over bar (w)) and number-average ((M) over bar (n)) molecular weights of the polydisperse polymer, but the z-average molecular weight ((M) over bar (z)) dependence on the spinodal is invisible. The dependence of free volume on composition, temperature, molecular weight, and its distribution results in the effect of (M) over bar (n) on the spinodal. Moreover, it has been found that the effect of changing (M) over bar (w) on the spinodal is much bigger than that of changing (M) over bar (n) and the extrema of the spinodal increases with the rise of the weight-average molecular weight of the polymer in the solutions with upper critical solution temperature (UCST). However, the effect of polydispersity on the spinodal can be neglected for the polymer with a considerably high weight-average molecular weight. A more simple expression of the spinodal for the polydisperse polymer solution in the framework of SLLFT was also derived under the assumption of upsilon(*)=upsilon(1)(*)=upsilon(2)(*) and (1/r(1)(0))-(1/r(2i)(0))-->(1/r(1)(0)).

A sensitive and efficient method for simultaneous determination of glutamic acid (Glu), gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) in rat endbrains was developed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection and on-line mass spectrometric identification following derivatization with 1,2-benzo-3,4-dihydrocarbazole-9-ethyl chloroformate (BCEOC). Different parameters which influenced derivatization and separation were optimized. The complete separation of five neurotransmitter (NT) derivatives was performed on a reversed-phase Hypersil BDS-C-18 column with a gradient elution. The rapid structure identification of five neurotransmitter derivatives was carried out by on-line mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization (ESI) source in positive ion mode, and the BCEOC-labeled derivatives were characterized by easy-to-interpret mass spectra. Stability of derivatives, repeatability, precision and accuracy were evaluated and the results were excellent for efficient HPLC analysis. The quantitative linear range of five neurotransmitters were 2.441-2 x 10(4) nM, and limits of detection were in the range of 0.398-1.258 nM (S/N = 3:1). The changes of their concentrations in endbrains of three rat groups were also studied using this HPLC fluorescence detection method. The results indicated that exhausting exercise could obviously influence the concentrations of neurotransmitters in rat endbrains. The established method exhibited excellent validity, high sensitivity and convenience, and provided a new technique for simultaneous analysis of monoamine and amino acid neurotransmitters in rat brain. On the subject of oil and gas exploration, migration is an efficacious technique for imagining structures underground. Wave-equation migration (WEM) dominates over other migration methods in accuracy, despite of higher computational cost. However, the advantages of WEM will emerge as the progress of computer technology. WEM is sensitive to velocity model more than others. Small velocity perturbations result in grate divergence in the image pad. Currently, Kirrchhoff method is still very popular in the exploration industry for the reason of difficult to provide precise velocity model. It is very urgent to figure out a way to migration velocity modeling. This dissertation is mainly devoted to migration velocity analysis method for WEM: 1. In this dissertation, we cataloged wave equation prestack depth migration. The concept of migration is introduced. Then, the analysis is applied to different kinds of extrapolate operator to demonstrate their accuracy and applicability. We derived the DSR and SSR migration method and apply both to 2D model. 2. The output of prestack WEM is in form of common image gathers (CIGs). Angle domain common image gathers (ADCIGs) gained by wave equation are proved to be free of artifacts. They are also the most potential candidates for migration velocity analysis. We discussed how to get ADCIGs by DSR and SSR, and obtained ADCIGs before and after imaging separately. The quality of post stack image is affected by CIGs, only the focused or flattened CIGs generate the correct image. Based on wave equation migration, image could be enhanced by special measures. In this dissertation we use both prestack depth residual migration and time shift imaging condition to improve the image quality. 3. Inaccurate velocities lead to errors of imaging depth and curvature of coherent events in CIGs. The ultimate goal of migration velocity analysis (MVA) is to focus scattered event to correct depth and flatten curving event by updating velocities. The kinematic figures are implicitly presented by focus depth aberration and kinetic figure by amplitude. The initial model of Wave-equation migration velocity analysis (WEMVA) is the output of RMO velocity analysis. For integrity of MVA, we review RMO method in this dissertation. The dissertation discusses the general ideal of RMO velocity analysis for flat and dipping events and the corresponding velocity update formula. Migration velocity analysis is a very time consuming work. Respect to computational convenience, we discus how RMO works for synthetic source record migration. In some extremely situation, RMO method fails. Especially in the areas of poorly illuminated or steep structure, it is very difficult to obtain enough angle information for RMO. WEMVA based on wave extrapolate theory, which successfully overcome the drawback of ray based methods. WEMVA inverses residual velocities with residual images. Based on migration regression, we studied the linearized scattering operator and linearized residual image. The key to WEMVA is the linearized residual image. Residual image obtained by Prestack residual migration, which based on DSR is very inefficient. In this dissertation, we proposed obtaining residual migration by time shift image condition, so that, WEMVA could be implemented by SSR. It evidently reduce the computational cost for this method.
