The crack tip driving force of a crack growing from a pre-crack that is perpendicular to and terminating at an interface between two materials is investigated using a linear fracture mechanics theory. The analysis is performed both for a crack penetrating the interface, growing straight ahead, and for a crack deflecting into the interface. The results from finite element calculations are compared with asymptotic solutions for infinitesimally small crack extensions. The solution is found to be accurate even for fairly large amounts of crack growth. Further, by comparing the crack tip driving force of the deflected crack with that of the penetrating crack, it is shown how to control the path of the crack by choosing the adhesion of the interface relative to the material toughness.

The influence of the recording conditions, including the widths of the recording beams, the width ratio of the recording beams, and the recording angles, on the properties of crossed-beam photorefractive gratings in doubly doped LiNbO3 crystals is studied. A theoretical model that combines the band transport model with two-dimensional coupled-wave theory is proposed. The numerical calculations of the space-charge field, the intensity profiles of the diffracted beam, and the diffraction efficiency are presented. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

A new method to measure the birefringence dispersion in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers is presented using white-light interferometry. By analyzing broadening of low-coherence interferograms obtained in a scanning Michelson interferometer, the birefringence dispersion and its variation along different fiber sections are acquired with high sensitivity and accuracy. Birefringence dispersions of two PANDA fibers at their operation wavelength are measured to be 0.011 ps/(km nm) and 0.018 ps/(km nm), respectively. Distributed measurement capability of the method is also verified experimentally. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

We systematically investigate the square-lattice dielectric photonic crystals that have been used to demonstrate flat slab imaging experimentally. A right-handed Bloch mode is found in the left-handed frequency region by using the plane wave expansion method to analyze the photonic band structure and equifrequency contours. Using the multiple scattering theory, numerical simulations demonstrate that the left-handed mode and the right-handed mode are excited simultaneously by a point source and result in two kinds of transmitted waves. Impacted by the evanescent waves, superposition of these transmitted waves brings on complicated near field distributions such as the so-called imaging and its disappearance.

A new formulation derived from thermal characters of inclusions and host films for estimating laser induced damage threshold has been deduced. This formulation is applicable for dielectric films when they are irradiated by laser beam with pulse width longer than tens picoseconds. This formulation can interpret the relationship between pulse-width and damage threshold energy density of laser pulse obtained experimentally. Using this formulation, we can analyze which kind of inclusion is the most harmful inclusion. Combining it with fractal distribution of inclusions, we have obtained an equation which describes relationship between number density of inclusions and damage probability. Using this equation, according to damage probability and corresponding laser energy density, we can evaluate the number density and distribution in size dimension of the most harmful inclusions. 南北纬四十度之间的山区在冰期时为很多植物提供了避难所,因而受到生物地理学研究者的广泛关注。地中海地区和青藏高原(东南部)均是全球生物多样性热点地区,很多生物类群间断分布于这两个地区,研究这种间断分布格局的形成过程具有重要理论意义。雪松属(Cedrus)含有四个关系密切的种,间断分布于地中海地区和喜马拉雅西部。在本研究中,我们从父性遗传的叶绿体和母性遗传的线粒体基因组中选取了八个DNA片段,通过序列分析重建雪松属所有物种的系统发育关系,并探讨该属生物地理格局的形成过程。主要研究结果如下: 所有分析的DNA片段中均未发现种内变异。5个叶绿体片段的合并分析、3个线粒体片段的合并分析以及所有8个细胞质DNA片段的联合分析均只得到一棵最简约树,而且不同分析得到的树图结构高度一致。雪松属分为喜马拉雅(C. deodara)和地中海两支;在地中海雪松支系中,北非雪松(C. atlantica)构成一个亚支,地中海东部的黎巴嫩雪松(C. libani)和塞浦路斯雪松(C. brevifolia)形成另一亚支,两个亚支间为姐妹群关系,并已发生较大的遗传分化。该结果与细胞和生化等研究结果一致。 雪松属的可靠化石发现于哈萨克斯坦西部的渐新世地层、欧洲西南部的中新世地层、欧洲东南部的上新世地层以及撒哈拉的早更新世地层,这种化石分布暗示雪松属可能是在欧亚大陆的高纬度地区起源的。自第三纪开始,全球由广泛的高温气候演变为具有大面积陆地冰盖的寒冷气候,这种气候变化促进了生物群的演替和分化。我们对雪松属的系统发育研究表明:该属植物可能在欧亚大陆高纬度地区起源后,因气候变冷而南迁,并通过隔离分化形成环地中海-喜马拉雅间断分布格局。结合青藏高原和地中海地区的气候和地质历史,我们推测雪松属在中新世以后才分布到喜马拉雅地区,并很可能在第三纪末才迁移到北非。

染色体黏着是有丝分裂和减数分裂的关键事件,是保证姊妹(或同源)染色体正确分离并分配到子细胞中的关键调控环节之一,它建立于细胞分裂前的S期将新复制的姊妹染色体紧密联系在一起。来自酵母的研究结果已经证明姊妹染色体之间的黏着是由多亚基的蛋白质复合体-黏着素所介导的。在芽殖酵母有丝分裂中,黏着素由Scc1,Scc3,Smc1和Smc3四个亚基组成。减数分裂黏着素的组成与有丝分裂中的相似,只是Scc1被其减数分裂特异的Rec8变体所替换。目前,已经从高等真核生物线虫,果蝇,人,鼠以及拟南芥中分离到了黏着素相关的基因,但是对于这些基因在高等真核生物特别是植物细胞分裂中的功能还知之甚少。即使在酵母中人们对于减数分裂和有丝分裂过程中有关染色体黏着与分离的许多基本问题仍然不清楚,而且许多现象表明减数分裂的详细机制在各种生物中存在重大差异。 我们通过同源克隆的方法证明水稻(和拟南芥)基因组编码4个RAD21/REC8-like基因。这4个基因均以单拷贝存在,在核苷酸水平上没有相似性。它们所编码的蛋白质的相似性主要局限于其N-末端结构域和C-末端结构域。这4个蛋白质的中间区域没有(或者仅有极低的)相似性,但是中间区域都含有潜在的核定位信号,PEST序列,分离酶的识别序列以及多个磷酸化位点。 半定量RT-PCR,原位杂交以及Western杂交结果显示这4个基因都在生殖器官中优势表达,但是它们在花发育过程中的表达动态是不同的。OsRAD21-1和OsRAD21-3都在减数分裂时期的颖花中表达量最高,但是OsRAD21-3还在成熟花粉中高表达;OsRAD21-4在减数分裂前的颖花中表达量最高;OsRAD21-2则在雌雄蕊形成时期表达最强,之后逐渐降低。这些结果暗示这4个基因的功能可能是不同的。 免疫荧光定位分析表明,OsRad21-1和OsRad21-3 特异地定位于有丝分裂的染色体上,其分布动态表明这两个蛋白可能都参与了有丝分裂姊妹染色体之间的黏着。由于水稻四个RAD21/REC8类基因中,只有OsRAD21-3在花粉发育过程中表达,同时水稻花粉的发育成熟要经过两次有丝分裂,推测OsRad21-3蛋白可能参与这两次有丝分裂过程姊妹染色体之间的黏着。OsRad21-4则特异地定位于减数分裂前间期到中期Ⅰ的染色体上,说明它可能特异地介导减数分裂过程姊妹染色体之间的黏着。与其它已知的Rad21/Rec8-like蛋白不同,不论在有丝分裂还是在减数分裂过程中,OsRad21-2蛋白都不定位于染色体上而是特异地定位在核仁中,并且它的动态变化与核仁重建和解体的动态规律在时间上也是相一致的,这说明OsRad21-2是一种新的核仁蛋白质而与染色体的黏着无关。 OsRAD21-4 RNAi转基因水稻植株的花粉活性受到严重影响,种子结实率降低。雄性减数分裂过程中染色体出现多种异常行为:前期Ⅰ染色体异常凝集;同源染色体提早分离;染色体出现片断化。进一步的FISH实验结果证明RNAi株系中同源染色体配对和姊妹染色体臂的黏着均发生异常。因此,OsRad21-4是酵母Rec8的同源蛋白,是正确的减数分裂所必需的。 与表达分析和功能分析所得的结果相一致,进化树分析可以将Rad21/Rec8-like蛋白质分为三个亚家族:(1)Rad21亚家族,参与有丝分裂姊妹染色体黏着;(2)Rec8亚家族,参与减数分裂染色体黏着;(3)Rno亚家族,目前仅发现于高等植物中,是一种核仁蛋白质而与其它的Rad21/Rec8-like蛋白的功能不同,可能不参与染色体之间的黏着。

本研究选取15个主要特征对我国淡水鱼类23属粘孢子虫的支序分类进行了分析。结果表明,根据这15个特征构建的经典分支系统树与现有分类系统较为一致;而许多被分子系统学证明有争议的特征,如尾孢虫的尾突,孢子和极囊的形状等在研究粘孢子虫的系谱发育中仍然有着重要作用,剔除了上述特征的分支系统树与经典的分支系统树相比,存在许多缺陷。嗜碘泡是区分粘体虫和碘泡虫的主要特征,然而剔除嗜碘泡特征的分支系统树与经典的分支系统树区别不大,因此,我们建议在这一方面和国际学术界统一起来,即不再把嗜碘泡作为区分碘泡虫和粘体虫的主要特征

We investigate theoretically electron spin states in one-dimensional and two-dimensional (2D) hard-wall mesoscopic rings in the presence of both the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (DSOI) in a perpendicular magnetic field. The Hamiltonian of the RSOI alone is mathematically equivalent to that of the DSOI alone using an SU(2) spin rotation transformation. Our theoretical results show that the interplay between the RSOI and DSOI results in an effective periodic potential, which consequently leads to gaps in the energy spectrum. This periodic potential also weakens and smoothens the oscillations of the persistent charge current and spin current and results in the localization of electrons. For a 2D ring with a finite width, higher radial modes destroy the periodic oscillations of persistent currents.

The local environment of Er3+ in heavily Er-doped (Er, 2.5 at. %) Si nanoclusters embedded in SiO2 films annealed at various temperatures was investigated by using the fluorescence-extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The results show that annealing caused a large effect on the local environment of Er3+ surrounded by O atoms and the 1.54 mu m photoluminescence intensity. The correlation between the local environment around Er3+ and the corresponding 1.54 mu m photoluminescence was discussed. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

We report a structure of (In, Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots which are vertically correlated and laterally aligned in a hexagonal way thus forming three-dimensionally ordered arrays. The growth pathway is based on a mechanism of self-assembly by strain-mediated multilayer vertical stacking on a planar GaAs(100) substrate, rather than molecular-beam epitaxy on a prepatterned substrate. The strain energy of lateral island-island interaction is minimum for the arrangement of hexagonal ordering. However, realization of hexagonal ordering not only depends on a complicated trade-off between lateral and vertical island-island interaction but is also related to a delicate and narrow growth kinetics window.

Periodical alignment of the InAs dots along the < 100 > and < 110 > directions was observed on an elastically relaxed InGaAs buffer layer grown at 500 and 450 degrees C, respectively, on the vicinal GaAs(001) substrate. Due to alignment along these directions, the InAs dots were arranged into a quasi-two-dimensional hexagonal lattice. Such a periodical arrangement of InAs dots may be explained in terms of modulation in strain as well as composition along [110] as observed by using cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy.

The influence of GaAS(1 0 0)2 degrees substrate misorientation on the formation and optical properties of InAs quantum dots (QDs) has been studied in compare with dots on exact GaAs(1 0 0) substrates. It is shown that, while QDs on exact substrates have only one dominant size, dots on misoriented substrates are formed in lines with a clear bimodal size distribution. Room temperature photoluminescence measurements show that QDs on misoriented substrates have narrower FWHM, longer emission wavelength and much larger PL intensity relative to those of dots on exact substrates. However, our rapid thermal annealing (RTA) experiments indicate that annealing shows a stronger effect on dots with misoriented substrates by greatly accelerating the degradation of material quality.
