For InAs/GaAs quantum dot system, the evolution of the wetting layer (WL) with the InAs deposition thickness has been studied by reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS). Two transitions related to the heavy-and light-hole in the WL have been distinguished in RD spectra. Taking into account the strain and segregation effects, a model has been presented to deduce the InAs amount in the WL and the segregation coefficient of the indium atoms from the transition energies of heavy-and light-holes. The variation of the InAs amount in the WL and the segregation coefficient are found to rely closely on the growth modes. In addition, the huge dots also exhibits a strong effect on the evolution of the WL. The observed linear dependence of In segregation coefficient upon the InAs amount in the WL demonstrates that the segregation is enhanced by the strain in the WL.

The wetting layer (WL) in InAs/GaAs quantum-dot systems has been studied by reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS). Two structures related to the heavy-hole (HH) and light-hole (LH) related transitions in the WL have been observed. On the basis of a calculation model that takes into account the segregation effect and exciton binding energies, the amount of InAs in the WL (t(WL)) and its segregation coefficient ( R) have been determined from the HH and LH transition energies. The evolutions of tWL and R exhibit a close relation to the growth modes. Before the formation of InAs dots, t(WL) increases linearly from similar to 1 to similar to 1.6 monolayer (ML), while R increases almost linearly from similar to 0.8 to similar to 0.85. After the onset of dot formation, t(WL) is saturated at similar to 1.6 ML and R decreases slightly from 0.85 to 0.825. The variation of tWL can be interpreted by using an equilibrium model. Different variations of in-plane optical anisotropy before and after dot formation have been observed.

Self-organized InAs quantum dots (QDs) have been fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and characterized by photoluminescence (PL). For both single- and multi-layer QDs, PL intensity of the first excited state is larger than that of the ground state at 15 K. Conversely, at room temperature (RT), PL intensity of the first excited state is smaller than that of the ground state. This result is explained by the phonon bottleneck effect. To the ground state, the PL intensities of the multi-layer QDs are larger than that of the single-layer QDs at 15 K, while the intensities are smaller than that of the single-layer QDs at RT. This is due to the defects in the multi-layer QD samples acting as the nonradiative recombination centers. The inter-diffusion of Ga and In atoms in the growth process of multi-layer QDs results in the PL blueshift of the ground state and broadening of the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), which can be avoided by decreasing the spacers' growth temperature. At the spacers' growth temperature of 520degreesC, we have prepared the 5-layer QDs which emit near 1.3 mum with a FWHM of 31.7 meV at RT, and 27.9 meV at 77 K. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been widely used as a base material for bio-MEMS/NEMS devices. It is difficult for PDMS to transfer and spread aqueous solution as a kind of highly hydrophobic material. Therefore, surface modification is necessary for PDMS to make it hydrophilic. In this paper, a method of hydrophilization of PDMS surface is proposed. Gold is sputtered to the PDMS substrate by sputter coater in different average thicknesses. Relationship between the average thickness of gold on the PDMS substrate and the contact angle of the surface was studied. It was found that even gold of average thickness less than 1 nm can result in about 25 degrees change of contact angle. AFM is also used to get topographic information of PDMS surface coated with gold. Three cases are classified with different amount of Au: (1) Heterogeneous zone; (2) Transition zone; (3) Film zone. For heterogeneous zone, a simple model about heterogeneous phase wetting is put forward to interpret this phenomenon.

Bucket Foundations under Dynamic Loadings The liquefaction deformation of sand layer around a bucket foundation is simulated under equivalent dynamic ice-induced loadings. A simplified numerical model is presented by taking the bucket-soil interaction into consideration. The development of vertical and horizontal liquefaction deformations are computed under equivalent dynamic ice-induced loadings. Firstly, the numerical model and results are proved to be reliable by comparing them with the centrifuge testing results. Secondly, the factors and the development characteristics of liquefaction deformation are analyzed. Finally, the following numerical simulation results are obtained: the liquefaction deformation of sand layer increases with the increase of loading amplitude and with the decrease of loading frequency and sand skeleton’s strength. The maximum vertical deformation is located on the sand layer surface and 1/4 times of the bucket’s height apart from the bucket’s side wall (loading boundary). The maximum horizontal deformation occurs at the loading boundary. When the dynamic loadings is applied for more than 5 hours, the vertical deformation on the sand layer surface reaches 3 times that at the bottom, and the horizontal deformation at 2.0 times of the bucket height apart from the loading boundary is 3.3% of which on the loading boundary.

A theoretical method to analyze four-layer large flattened mode (LFM) fibers is presented. The influence of the second cladding on the properties of four-layer LFM fiber, including the fundamental and higher-order modal fields, effective area, bending loss, and dispersion, are studied by comparison. At the same time, the reasons for the different characteristics are considered. The obtained results indicate that the effective area of the four-layer LFM fiber is about 1.6 times larger than that of the conventional standard step-index fiber and the fibers have better bend-induced filtering ability than three-layer LFM fibers. A simple and practical model is used to analyse the influence of substrate surface defect on the optical characteristics of a single-layer coating. A single-layer coating is prepared and its optical properties are fitted. Some explanations for the origin of the transition layer are presented. It is concluded that there is a transition layer forming between the substrate and coating, which is attributed to substrate surface defects, and its refractive index change is nearly of linearity.

Used in chirped-pulse amplification system and based on multi-layer thin film stack, pulse compressor gratings (PCG) are etched by ion-beam and holographic techniques. Diffraction efficiency and laser-induced damage threshold rely on the structural parameters of gratings. On the other hand, they depend greatly on the design of multi-layer. A theoretic design is given for dielectric multi-layer, which is exposed at 413.1 nm and used at 1053 nm. The influences of coating design on optical characters are described in detail. The analysis shows that a coating stack of H3L (H2L) (boolean AND) 9H0.5L2.01H meets the specifications of PCG well. And there is good agreement of transmission between experimental and the theoretic design. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of multi-layer dielectric used in pulse compressor gratings (PCG) was investigated. The sample was prepared by e-beam evaporation (EBE). LIDT was detected following ISO standard 11254-1.2. It was found that LIDTs of normal and 51.2 deg. incidence (transverse electric (TE) mode) were 14.14 and 9.31 J/cm2, respectively. A Nomarski microscope was employed to map the damage morphology, and it was found that the damage behavior was pit-concave-plat structure for normal incidence, while it was pit structure for 51.2 deg. incidence with TE mode. The electric field distribution was calculated to illuminate the difference of LIDT between the two incident cases.

Multi-layer dielectric (MLD) gratings for pulse compressors in high-energy laser systems should provide high diffraction efficiency as well as high laser induced damage thresholds (LIDT). Nonuniform optical near-field distribution is one of the important factors to limit their damage resistant capabilities. Electric field distributions in the gratings and multi-layer film region are analyzed by using Fourier modal method. Optimization of peak electric field in the gratings ridge is performed with a merit function, including both diffraction efficiency and electric field enhancement when the top layer material is HfO2 and SiO2, respectively. A set of optimized gratings parameters is obtained for each structure, which reduce the peak electric field within the gratings ridge to being respective 1.39 and 1.84 times the value of incident light respectively. Finally, we also discuss the effects of gratings refractive index, gratings sidewall angle and incident angle on peak electric field in the gratings ridge. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The characteristics of a resonant cavity-enhanced InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot n-i-n photodiode with only a bottom distributed Bragg reflector used as the cavity mirror, are reported. To suppress the dark current, an AlAs layer is inserted into the device structure as the blocking layer. It turns out that the structure still possesses the resonant coupling nature, and makes Rabi splitting discernible in the photoluminescence spectra. The measured responsivity spectrum of the photocurrent shows a peak at lambda = 1030 nm, and increases rapidly as the bias voltage increases. A peak responsivity of 0.75 A/W, or equivalently an external quantum efficiency of 90.3%, is obtained at V-bias = -1.4 V.

The strain evolution in metal organic chemical vapor deposition growth of GaN on Si (111) substrate with an AlN interlayer is studied. During the growth of GaN film on AlN interlayer, the growth stress changes from compression to tension. The study shows that the density of V trenches in the AlN interlayer surface and the threading dislocations generated in the AlN interlayer have a significant influence on this strain evolution process. The dislocations generated in AlN interlayer may thread across the interface and play a key role in the strain evolution process of the GaN layer grown on AlN interlayer.
