A new compound, (C6H6N3)(7)((PMo12O40)-O-m)(PMo(v)Mo(11)(m)O40) (.) 2CH(3)CH(2)OH (.) 5H(2)O, was synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. This is the first example of benzotriazole-polyoxometalates species. The compound crystallized in a triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 1. 8378 (4) nm. b = 1. 9078 (4) nm. c = 2.1037 (4) nm. alpha = 63.41 (3)degrees. beta = 64.31 (3)degrees. gamma = 68.38 (3)degrees. V = 5.803 (2) nm(3). Z = 2. R-1 = 0.0486, wR(2) = 0.1357. The X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure was constructed by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between dodecamolybdophosphorate anions and protonated benzotriazole cations. The electrochemical behavior and the reduction of nitrite and hydrogen peroxide clectrocatalyzed by the title compound were studied.

A novel hybrid photochromic composite film composed of Preyssler's heteropoly acid H-12[EuP5W30O110] (EuP5W30) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was prepared by dip-coating method. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the surface topography. The change of characteristic peak in the infrared spectra (IR) was investigated. The TG curve showed three steps of weight loss and approximately revealed the composition of the hybrid film. Ultraviolet-visible adsorption spectra (UV-VIS) and electron resonance spectrum (ESR) were used to investigate the photochromic behavior and mechanism of hybrid film. The photoluminescent behavior of the film at room temperature was investigated to show the characteristic Eu3+ emission pattern of D-5(o)-F-7(J). The occurrence of photoluminescent activity confirms the potential for creating luminescent thin film with polyoxometalates (POMs).

The interaction between polyaniline (PAn) and 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy. The results show that the polymerization-depolymerization reaction of DMcT or its dilithium salt Li(2)DMcT is a kinetically quasi-reversible process. PAn exhibits very weak electrochemical activity in neutral propylene carbonate. After doping with protonic acid, such as hydrochloric acid or maleic acid etc., however, it shows an extensively enhanced electroactivity. For the complex system, PAn-DMcT or PAn-Li(2)DMcT, polyaniline has no catalytic activity for the electrochemical polymerization-depolymerization reaction of DMcT or DMcT(2-). Instead, the enhancement of the electrochemical redox activity of PAn-DMcT system compared with that of PAn, DMcT, Li(2)DMcT, and PAn-Li(2)DMcT comes from the protonic doping of PAn by DMcT.

A new chemiluminescence(CL) system for the determination of ascorbic acid has been established. By the fast reduction reaction between chromium(VI) and ascorbic acid, chromium(M was generated to react with luminol and hydrogen peroxide in alkaline aqueous solution and hydrogen peroxide to produce CL. The CL emission intensity was correlated with ascorbic acid concentration in the range 8.0 x 10(-9) to 1.6 x 10(-4) mol/L, and the detection limit was 8.0 x 10(-9) mol/L ascorbic acid. The relative standard deviation (n = 11) for 1.0 x 10(-6) mol/L ascorbic acid is 0.9%. The method has been applied to the determination of ascorbic acid in vitamin C tablets with satisfactory results.

A poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) alloy was prepared with a reactive extrusion method, For improved compatibility of the blending system, LLDPE grafted with acrylic acid (LLDPE-g-AA) by radiation was adopted in place of plain LLDPE. The toughness and extensibility of the PBT/LLDPE-g-AA blends, as characterized by the impact strengths and elongations at break, were much improved in comparison with the toughness and extensibility of the PBT/LLDPE blends at the same compositions. However, there was not much difference in their tensile (or flexural) strengths and moduli. Scanning electron microscopy photographs showed that the domains of PBT/LLDPE-g-AA were much smaller and their dispersions were more homogeneous than the domains and dispersions of the PBT/ T,T PE blends. Compared with the related values of the PBT/LLDPE blends, the contents and melting temperatures of the usual spherulites of PBT in PBT/LLDPE-g-AA decreased.

Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the surface acid-base property of carboxylic acid-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). A carboxylic acid-terminated thiol, such as thioctic acid (1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic add), was self-assembled on gold electrodes. Electron transfer between the bulk solution and the SAM modified electrode was studied at different pH using Fe(CN)(6)(3-) as a probe. The surface pK(a) of thioctic acid was determined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to be 5.6 +/- 0.1 and 5.8 +/- 0.1, respectively. The method is compared with other methods of monolayer pK(a) measurement.

A new detection scheme for the determination of adsorbable coreactants of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescent reaction is presented. It is based on selective preconcentration of coreactant onto an electrode, followed by Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescent detection. The coreactant employed is chlorpromazine. It was sensitively detected after 5-min preconcentration onto a lauric acid-modified carbon paste electrode. The linear concentration range was found to occur from 1 x 10(-8) to 3 x 10(-6) mol L-1 with a detection limit of 3.1 x 10(-9) mol L-1. The total analysis time is less than 10 min. As a result of selective preconcentration and medium exchange, such remarkable selectivity is achieved that reproducible quantitation of chlorpromazine in urine is possible.

Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation). Capillary electrophoresis (CE) with end-column electrochemical detection (EC) of barbituric acid (BA) and 2-thiobarbituric acid (TA) has been described. Under optimum condition, BA and TA were separated satisfactorily, and a response of high sensitivity and stability was obtained at a detection potential of 1.25 V versus Ag/AgCl. Optimized end-column detection provides detection limit as low as 0.5 and 0.1 mu M for BA and TA, respectively. The calibration graph was linear over three orders of magnitude. The relative standard deviations (n = 10) of peak currents and migration times obtained for both BA and TA were 3.4, 3.7, and 1.7, 1.2%, respectively. The proposed method has been applied to analyze water sample with satisfactory results. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A ferrocene-dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) film electrode was prepared by casting the solution of ferrocene and DMPC in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode surface. Ferrocene retained in the biological membrane gave a couple of irreversible peaks of cyclic voltammogram. The electrode exhibited good electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (H(2)A) in phosphate buffer (pH 6.64) with an anodic peak potential of +340 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl). The anodic current was directly proportional to the square root of the scan rate below 150 mV s(-1). The influence of the pH value was investigated and it was observed that pH 6.64 was the suitable value to the anodic peak potential and current. The thickness of the film and the interference of uric acid were also studied. The electrode can be used to determine H(2)A in the presence of equimolar uric acid. The catalytic peak current increased linearly with the concentration of H(2)A in the range of 1 X 10(-4)-5 X 10(-3) mol L-1.

A stable lipid cast film was made by casting a lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. We imbedded a new mediator norepinephrine into this lipid cast film, which was considered as a biological membrane model. Through electro catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid by this system, the anodic overpotential was reduced by about 250 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of norepinephrine in the cast film was controlled by diffusion. The obtained diffusion coefficient of ascorbic acid was 1.87 x 10(-5) cm 2 s(-1). The catalytic current increased linearly with the concentration of ascorbic acid in the range from 0.5 to 10 mM. Using cyclic voltammetry, we obtained two peaks for ascorbic acid and uric acid in the same solution. The separation between the two peaks is about 147 mV. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 muM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N = 4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers.
