The impacts of submerged macrophytes on kinetics of alkaline phosphatase were studied in two 680 m(2) enclosures in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Donghu Lake) from April to October 1996, and two experimental pools (120 m(2)) built inland in 1998. The submerged macrophytes were Vallisneria sp, Potamogeton crispus. In the presence of macrophytes, the concentration of orthophosphate was significantly lower, coupled with the decreasing function of organic P hydrolysis, in terms of lower V-max and higher K-m values of aIkaline phosphatase in water, filtered and unfiltered (0.45 mu m); in the interstitial water, the V-max values of the enzyme in sediments were significantly lower, exhibited by a spatial and vertical profile. The results implied the key role of submerged macrophytes was the retention of P nutrients. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Seasonal variation of the kinetic parameters of total alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) was studied in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Donghu Lake). At the three experimental stations the values of V-max of APA were higher and the negative correlation between orthophosphate and the total APA specific activity (V-max/Chl.) was stronger during summer (from June to September) P depletion. At the same time, the values of Michaelis constant (K-m) of APA at the three stations decreased. Phytoplankton seem to compensate for their phosphorus deficiency not only by an increase in enzyme production but also by an improved ability to use low substrate concentrations. Filtrable phosphorus compounds in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Donghu Lake) were fractionated by Sephadex G-25 gel-filtration chromatography. Some portions of those compounds released soluble reactive phosphorus upon irradiation with low dose ultraviolet light. Catalase and a hydroxyl radical scavenger (mannitol) markedly prevented photosensitive phosphorus release. The observed effects may be explained by the action of oxidizing reagents such as hydroxyl radicals, produced in photochemical reactions between UV irradiation and humic substances in the water. There was a strong seasonality in UV-sensitive P (UVSP) release. Michaels constants (K-m) of total alkaline phosphatase in the lake water showed a direct positive relation to UVSP. Plot of K-m against the UVSP/phosphomonoester ratio reveals a strong relationship between the two variables. These results suggest that in some situations UVSP may be a competitive inhibitor of alkaline phosphatase activity in the lake. The competitive inhibition of fractionated UVSP on alkaline phosphatase reagent (Sigma) apparently supports this hypothesis.

Nutrient addition bioassays were conducted in 10 L carboys with water from a eutrophic farm pond. The four bioassay treatments each conducted in triplicate were control (no nutrients added), +N (160 mu mol L(-1) NH4Cl), +P (10 mu mol L(-1) KH2PO4), and N+P (160 mu mol L(-1) NH4Cl and 10 mu mol L(-1) KH2PO4). The size fractionated (0.2-0.8, 0.8-3, > 3 mu m) contents of the carboys were analyzed after 7 d for alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) and chlorophyll-a content. Chlorophyll data suggested P deficiency in ammonium and control mesocosms and no P deficiency with phosphate additions. Pond water also was collected in June, August, October, and March for measurement of APA. In water from the pond, the greatest V-max of APA usually was associated with microorganisms in the size classes between 0.8-3 mu m. In mesocosm experiments, the N+P treatment increased V-max of dissolved and particulate associated APA in the 0.2-0.8 mu m size range and in dissolved form. The V-max of APA in the largest size-fraction (> 3 mu m) increased markedly with P deficiency (+N treatment) and decreased in the P-enrichment treatment. The patterns of APA and chlorophyll associated with different size fractions often varied independently among different treatments and seasons and not always as a function of P deficiency, indicating the difficulty of attempting to normalize APA to phytoplankton biomass or chlorophyll. The Michaelis half saturation constant of APA in the pond water showed no strong trends with varied seasons or size fraction.

EQUILATERAL-TRIANGLE; MU-M; LASERS; MICROLASERS; MICRODISK Abstract: Mode characteristics for midinfrared microsquare resonators with sloped sidewalls and confined metal layers are investigated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) techniques. For a microsquare with a side length of 10 mu m, the mode quality (Q)-factors of 8329, 4772, and 2053 are obtained for TM5,7 mode at wavelength 7.1 mu m by three-dimensional FDTD simulations, as the tilting angles of the side walls are 90 degrees, 88 degrees, and 86 degrees, respectively. Furthermore, microsquare resonators laterally surrounded by SiO2 and metal layers are investigated by the two-dimensional FDTD technique for the metal layers of Au, Ti-Au, Ag-Au, and Ti-Ag-Au, respectively.

Ir and Ni Schottky contacts on strained Al0.25Ga0.75N/GaN heterostructures, and the Ni Schottky contact with different areas on strained Al0.3Ga0.7N/GaN heterostructures have been prepared. Using the measured capacitance-voltage curves and the current-voltage curves obtained from the prepared Schottky contacts, the polarization charge densities of the AlGaN barrier layer for the Schottky contacts were analyzed and calculated by self-consistently solving Schrodinger's and Poisson's equations. It is found that the polarization charge density of the AlGaN barrier layer for the Ir Schottky contact on strained Al0.25Ga0.75N/GaN heterostructures is different from that of the Ni Schottky contact, and the polarization charge densities of the AlGaN barrier layer for Ni Schottky contacts with different areas on strained Al0.3Ga0.7N/GaN heterostructures are different corresponding to different Ni Schottky contact areas. As a result, the conclusion can be made that Schottky contact metals on strained AlGaN/GaN heterostructures have an influence on the strain of the AlGaN barrier layer. The defect formation energies of transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) doped in the pseudo-H passivated ZnO nanowires and bulk are systematically investigated using first-principles methods. The general chemical trends of the nanowires are similar to those of the bulk. We also show that the formation energy increases as the diameter of the nanowire decreases, indicating that the doping of magnetic ions in the ZnO nanowire becomes more difficult with decreasing diameter. We also systematically calculate the ferromagnetic properties of transition metals doped in the ZnO nanowire and bulk, and find that Cr ions of the nanowire favor ferromagnetic state, which is consistent with the experimental results. We also find that the ferromagnetic coupling state of Cr is more stable in the nanowire than in the bulk, which may lead to a higher T (c) useful for the nano-materials design of spintronics.

Semi-insulating gallium arsenide single crystal grown in space has been used in fabricating low noise field effect transistors and analog switch integrated circuits by the direct ion-implantation technique. All key electrical properties of these transistors and integrated circuits have surpassed those made from conventional earth-grown gallium arsenide. This result shows that device-grade space-grown semiconducting single crystal has surpassed the best terrestrial counterparts. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Silica spheres doped with Eu(TTFA)(3) and/or Sm(TTFA)(3) were synthesized by using the modified Stober method. The transmission electron microscope image reveals that the hybrid spheres have smooth surfaces and an average diameter of about 210 nm. Fluorescence spectrometer was used to analyze the fluorescence properties of hybrid spheres. The results show that multiple energy transfer processes are simultaneously achieved in the same samples co-doped with Eu (TTFA)(3) and Sm(TTFA)(3), namely between the ligand and Eu3+ ion, the ligand and Sm3+ ion, and Sm3+ ion and Eu3+, ion. Energy transfer of Sm3+-> Eu3+, in the hybrid spheres leads to fluorescence enhancement of Eu3+ emission by approximately an order of magnitude. The lifetimes of the hybrid spheres were also measured.
