In scattering calculations using the T-matrix method, the calculation of the T-matrix involves multiplication and inversion of matrices. These two types of matrix operations are time-consuming, especially for the matrices with large size. Petrov et al. [D. Petrov, Y. Shkuratov, G. Videen, Opt. Lett. 32 (2007) 1168] proposed an optimized matrix inversion technique, which suggests the inversion of two matrices, each of which contains half the number of rows. This technique reduces time-consumption significantly. On the basis of this approach, we propose another fast calculation technique for scattering in the T-matrix method, which obtains the scattered fields through carrying out only the operations between matrices and the incident field coefficient. Numerical results show that this technique can decrease time-consumption by more than half that of the optimized matrix inversion technique by Petrov et al. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. This paper discusses a rigorous treatment of the refractive scintillation of pulsar PSR B0833-45 caused by a two-component interstellar scattering medium. It is assumed that the interstellar scattering medium is composed of a thin screen ISM and an extended interstellar medium. We consider that the scattering of the thin screen concentrates in a thin layer presented by a delta function distribution and that the scattering density of the extended irregular medium satisfies the Gaussian distribution. We investigate and develop equations for the flux density structure function corresponding to this two-component ISM geometry in the scattering density distribution and compare our result with that of the Vela pulsar observations. We conclude that the refractive scintillation caused by this two-component ISM scattering gives a more satisfactory explanation for the observed flux density variation of the Vela pulsar than does the single extended medium model. The level of refractive scintillation is strongly sensitive to the distribution of scattering material along the line of sight. The logarithmic slope of the structure function is sensitive to thin screen location and is relatively insensitive to the scattering strength of the thin screen medium. Therefore, the proposed model can be applied to interpret the structure function of flux density observed in pulsar PSR B0833-45. The result suggests that the medium consists of a discontinuous distribution of plasma turbulence embedded in the Vela supernova remnant. Thus our work provides some insight into the distribution of the scattering along the line of sight to the Vela pulsar.

The surface roughness of polished InP (001) wafers were examined by x-ray reflectivity and crystal truncation rod (CTR) measurements. The root-mean-square roughness and the lateral correlation scale were obtained by both methods. The scattering intensities in the scans transverse to the specular reflection rod were found to contain two components. A simple surface model of surface faceting is proposed to explain the experimental data. The sensitivities of the two methods to the surface structure and the role of the resolution functions in the CTR measurements are discussed.

Theoretical and experimental investigations were performed to show the application of x-ray crystal truncation rod scattering combined with x-ray reflectivity in the measurements of surface roughness and near-surface damage of mechanochemically polished wafers. By fitting the measured crystal truncation rod curves it has been shown that polished wafers are divided into three parts -irregular steps on the surface, a damaged thin layer beneath the surface and a perfect bulk. The results show that the root mean square of the surface roughness of mechanochemically polished Fe-doped and/or S-doped InP wafers is one to two atom layers, and that the lateral correlation length of the surface roughness is about 3000-7500 Angstrom. The thickness of the damaged region is found to be about 1000 atom layers.

A two-dimensional atomic scattering theory is developed for scattering of electrons by a circularly symmetric quantum structure in the two-dimensional electron gas. It is found that the scattering cross section oscillates as a function of ka where k is the electron wave vector and a is the radius of the cylindrical potential barrier. If there is a quantum well inside the potential barrier, there appears a series of sharp resonant-tunneling peaks superposed on the original scattering-cross-section curves. The width of the resonant-tunneling peak depends sensitively on the thickness, the height of the potential barrier, and the electron energy.

This article presents the results of near-resonant Raman scattering measurements on GaAs/AlAs superlattices at room temperature. A strong enhancement of GaAs LO phonon-even modes resulted owing to a dipole-allowed Frohlich interaction in superlattices. Similar to the previous results, the LO phonon-even modes in a polarized configuration are observed. In contrast to previous work, however, what we observed in depolarized configurations is the LO phonon-odd modes instead of even modes. It is confirmed that the selection rules for near-resonant Raman scattering from LO phonons in this kind of superlattices are the same as those for off-resonant scattering. From the second-order Raman scattering, it is confirmed that polarized second-order Raman scattering spectra consist of overtones and combinations of two even modes, and depolarized second-order Raman scattering spectra consist of combinations of an even mode and an odd mode. Our experimental results coincide with the predictions using the recently developed Huang-Zhu model. A brief discussion on interface modes and their combination with confined modes is also presented.

The near-resonance Raman scattering of GaAs/AlAs superlattices is investigated at room temperature. Owing to the resonance enhancement of Frohlich interaction, the scattering intensity of even LO confined modes with A1 symmetry becomes much stronger than that of odd modes with B2 symmetry. The even modes were observed in the polarized spectra, while the odd modes appear in the depolarized spectra as in the off-resonance case. The second-order Raman spectra show that the polarized spectra are composed of the overtone and combinations of even modes, while the depolarized spectra are composed of the combinations of one odd mode and one even mode. The results agree well with the selection rules predicted by the microscopic theory of Raman scattering in superlattices, developed recently by Huang and co-workers. In addition, the interface modes and the combinations of interface modes and confined modes are also observed in the two configurations.
