Diamond films were prepared by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MWPCVD). In order to obtain better field emission properties, the samples coated with different metals were prepared. The results showed that the field emission properties of diamond coated with metals could be greatly improved in comparison to pure diamond film and the different kinds of coated metals have different influences on the field emission properties. The possible reasons of effects on the field emission properties are discussed, which were probably due to the reduced effective surface work function by metal coatings; but the detail of the mechanism should be studied further. The surface morphology and microstructure of the sample were characterized by Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectrum tests. Detailed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profiling measurements were performed across the back n-layer/transparent conducting oxide (n/TCO) inter-faces for superstrate p-i-n solar cells to examine differences between amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and microcrystalline silicon (mu c-Si:H) n-layer materials as well as TCO materials ZnO and ITO in the chemical, microstructural and diffusion properties of the back interfaces. No chemical reduction of TCO was found for all variations of n-layer/TCO interfaces. We found that n-a-Si:H interfaces better with ITO, while n-mu c-Si:H, with ZnO. A cross-comparison shows that the n-a-Si:H/ITO interface is superior to the n-mu c-Si:H/ZnO interface, as evidenced by the absence of oxygen segregation and less oxidized Si atoms observed near the interface together with much less diffusion of TCO into the n-layer. The results suggest that the n/TCO interface properties are correlated with the characteristics of both the n-layer and the TCO layer. Combined with the results reported on the device performance using similar back n/TCO contacts, we found the overall device performance may depend on both interface and bulk effects related to the back n/TCO contacts. The chemical properties of AlxGa1-xN surfaces exposed to air for different time periods are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL) measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PL and AFM results show that AlxGa1-xN samples exhibit different surface characteristics for different air-exposure times and Al contents. The XPS spectra of the Al 2p and Ga 2p core levels indicate that the peaks shifted slightly, from an Al-N to an Al-O bond and from a Ga-N to a Ga-O bond. All of these results show that the epilayer surface contains a large amount of Ga and Al oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Surface micro-roughness, surface chemical properties, and surface wettability are three important aspects of wafer surfaces during a wafer cleaning process, which determine the bonding quality of ordinary direct wafer bonding. In this study, InP wafers are divided into four groups and treated by different chemical processes. Subsequently, the characteristics of the treated InP surfaces are carefully studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. The optimal wafer treatment method for wafer bonding is determined by comparing the results of the processes as a whole. This optimization is later evaluated by a scanning electronic microscope (SEM), and the ridge waveguide 1.55 mu m Si-based InP/InGaAsP multi-quantum-well laser chips are also fabricated. Radio frequency magnetron sputtering/post-carbonized-reaction technique was adopted to prepare good-quality GaN films on Al2O3(0 0 0 1) substrates. The sputtered Ga2O3 film doped with carbon was used as the precursor for GaN growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern reveals that the film consists of hexagonal wurtzite GaN. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that no oxygen can be detected. Electrical and room-temperature photoluminescence measurements show that good-quality polycrystalline GaN films were successfully grown on Al2O3(0 0 0 1) substrates. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. A set of a-SiOx:H (0.52 < x < 1.58) films are fabricated by plasma-enhanced-chemical-vapor-deposition (PECVD) method at the substrate temperature of 250degreesC. The microstructure and local bonding configurations of the films are investigated in detail using micro-Raman scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is found that the films are structural inhomogeneous, with five phases of Si, Si2O:H, SiO:H, Si2O3:H and SiO2 that coexist. The phase of Si is composed of nonhydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si) clusters that are spatially isolated. The average size of the clusters decreases with the increasing oxygen concentration x in the films. The results indicate that the structure of the present films can be described by a multi-shell model, which suggests that a-Si cluster is surrounded in turn by the subshells Of Si2O:H, SiO:H, Si2O3:H, and SiO2.

Ta is often used as a buffer layer in magnetic multilayers. In this study, Ta/Ni81Fe19/Ta multilayers were deposited by magnetron sputtering on sing-crystal Si with a 300-nm-thick SiO2 film. The composition and chemical states at the interface region of SiO2/Ta were studied using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and peak decomposition technique. The results show that there is an 'inter-mixing layer" at the SiO2/Ta interface due to a thermodynamically favorable reaction: 15 SiO2 + 37 Ta = 6 Ta2O5 + 5 Ta5Si3. Therefore, the Ta buffer layer thickness used to induce NiFe (111) texture increases.

The experimental results show that the exchange coupling field of NiFe/FeMn for Ta/ NiFe/FeMn/Ta multilayers is higher than that for the spin valve multilayers Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/ Ta. In order to find out the reason, the composition and chemical states at the surfaces of Ta(12nm)/ NiFe(7nm), Ta(12nm)/NiFe(7nm)/Cu(4nm) and Ta(12nm)/NiFe(7nm)/Cu(3nm)/NiFe(5nm) were studied using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that no elements from lower layers float out or segregate to the surface for the first and second samples. However, Cu atoms segregate to the surface of Ta(12nm)/NiFe(7nm)/Cu(3nm)/NiFe(5nm) multilayers, i.e. Cu atoms segregate to the NiFe/FeMn interface for Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/Ta multilayers. We believe that the presence of Cu atoms at the interface of NiFe/FeMn is one of the important factors causing the exchange coupling field of Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Ta multilayers to be higher than that of Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/ FeMn/Ta multilayers.

The evolution of carbonization process on Si as a function of ion dose has been carried out by mass-selected ion-beam deposition technique. 3C-SiC layer has been obtained at low ion dose, which has been observed by reflection high energy electron diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The chemical states of Si and carbon have also been examined as a function of ion dose by XPS. Carbon enrichment was found regardless of the used ion dose here, which may be due to the high deposition rate. The formation mechanism of SiC has also been discussed based on the subplantation process. The work will also provide further understanding of the ion-bombardment effect. Ta/NiO/NiFe/Ta multilayers, utilizing Ta as buffer layer, were prepared by rf reactive and de magnetron sputtering. The exchange coupling field between NiO and NiFe reached a maximum value of 9.6x10(3) A/m at a NiO film thickness of 50 nm. The composition and chemical states at interface region of Ta/NiO/Ta were studied by using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and peak decomposition technique. The results show that there is an "intermixing layer" at the Ta/NiO land NiO/Ta) interface due to a thermodynamically favorable reaction 2Ta + 5NiO = 5Ni + Ta2O5. This interface reaction has a great effect on exchange coupling. The thickness of Ni+NiO estimated by XPS depth. profiles is about 8-10 nm.

GaN epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy using NH3 as the nitrogen source were found to contain hydrogen. We further notice that the background electron concentration in GaN can be correlated with the amount of hydrogen contaminant. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of the N Is peak reveal that hydrogen is bound to nitrogen. This will make the corresponding Ga atom see insufficient N counterpart, as can be inferred from the XPS Ga 3d spectrum. We then think that nitrogen in the lattice terminated by hydrogen is an effective nitrogen vacancy and hence a donor accounting for the background electrons.

We have found that GaN epilayers grown by NH3-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) contain hydrogen. Dependent on the hydrogen concentration, GaN on (0001) sapphire can be either under biaxially compressive strain or under biaxially tensile strain. Furthermore, we notice that background electrons in GaN increase with hydrogen incorporation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of the N1s region indicate that hydrogen is bound to nitrogen. So, the microdefect Ga...H-N is an effective nitrogen vacancy in GaN, and it may be a donor partly answering for the background electrons. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Epitaxial cerium dioxide films on single-crystal silicon substrates (CeO2/Si) have been grown by a dual mass-analyzed low-energy ion beam deposition (IBD) system. By double-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) are 23' and 33' in the rocking curves for (222) and (111) faces of the CeO2 film, respectively, and the lattice-mismatch Delta a/a with the substrate is about - 0.123%. The results show that the CeO2/Si grown by IBD is of high crystalline quality. In this work, the CeO2/Si heterostructure were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) measurements. Especially, XPS and AES depth profiling was used to analyze the compositions and structures in the interface regions of the as-grown and post-annealed CeO2/Si. It was found that there was no silicon oxide in the interface region of the as-grown sample but silicon oxide in the post-annealed sample. The reason for obtaining such high quality heterostructure mainly depends on the absence of silicon oxide in the surface at the beginning of the deposition. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. An anomalous behavior was observed in X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) depth profile measurements conducted on CeO2/Si epilayers grown by ion beam epitaxy (IBE): the signals of Ce3+ and Ce4+ co-exist, and the ratio between them increases during the etching time and then tends to maintain a constant level before increasing again. The results of X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), and Rutherford Back-Scattering (RES) measurements proved that the reduction chemical reaction of CeO2 is induced by ion-etching. In a search for the mechanism of the induced reduction reaction that occurred in X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) depth profiles measured experimentally on CeO2/Si epilayers grown by ion beam epitaxy (IBE), several possibilities have been checked. The first possibility, that the X-ray induces the reaction, has been ruled out by experimentation. Other possible models for the incident-ion induced reaction, one based on short-range interaction (direct collision) and the other based on long-range potential accompanied with the incident-ions, have been tested by simulation on computer. The results proved that the main mechanism is the former, not the latter. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
