Bulge test combined with a refined load-deflection model for long rectangular membrane was applied to determine the mechanical and fracture properties of PECVD silicon nitride (SiNx) thin films. Plane-strain modulus E-ps prestress s(0), and fracture strength s(max) of SiNx thin films deposited both on bare Si substrate and on SiO2-topped Si substrate were extracted. The SiNx thin films on different substrates possess similar values of E-ps and s(0) but quite different values of s(max). The statistical analysis of fracture strengths were performed by Weibull distribution function and the fracture origins were further predicted.

Si thin films with different structures were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and characterized via Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The passivation effect of such different Si thin films on crystalline Si surface was investigated by minority carrier lifetime measurement via a method, called microwave photoconductive decay (mu PCD), for the application in HIT (heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer) solar cells. The results show that amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) has a better passivation effect due to its relative higher H content, compared with microcrystalline (mu c-Si) silicon and nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si). Further, it was found that H atoms in the form of Si-H bonds are more preferred than those in the form of Si-H-2 bonds to passivate the crystalline Si surface. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Quantitative determinations of the hydrogen content and its profile in silicon nitride sensitive films by the method of resonant nuclear reaction have been carried out. At a deposition temperature of 825-degrees-C, hydrogen exists in an LPCVD silicon nitride sensitive film and the hydrogen content on its surface is in the range (8-16) x 10(21) cm-3, depending on the different deposition processes used. This hydrogen content is larger than the (2-3) x 10(21) cm-3 in its interior part, which is homogeneous. Meanwhile, we observe separate peaks for the chemical bonding configurations of Si-H and N-H bonds, indicated by the infrared absorption bands Si-O (1106 cm-1), N-H (1200 cm-1), Si-H-3 (2258 cm-1) and N-H-2 (3349 cm-1), respectively. The worse linear range of the ISFET is caused by the presence of oxygen on the surface of the silicon nitride sensitive film. The existence of chemical bonding configurations of Si-H, N-H and N-Si on its surfaces is favourable for its pH response.

The electronic states and optical transition properties of three semiconductor wires Si? GaAs, and ZnSe are studied by the empirical pseudopotential homojunction model. The energy levels, wave functions, optical transition matrix elements, and lifetimes are obtained for wires of square cross section with width from 2 to 5 (root 2a/2), where a is the lattice constant. It is found that these three kinds of wires have different quantum confinement properties. For Si wires, the energy gap is pseudodirect, and the wave function of the electronic ground state consists mainly of four bulk Delta states. The optical transition matrix elements are much smaller than that of a direct transition, and increase with decreasing wire width. Where the width of wire is 7.7 Angstrom, the Si wire changes from an indirect energy gap to a direct energy gap due to mixing of the bulk Gamma(15) state. For GaAs wires. the energy gap is also pseudodirect in the width range considered, but the optical transition matrix elements are larger than those of Si wires by two orders of magnitude for the same width. However, there is no transfer to a direct energy gap as the wire width decreases. For ZnSe wires, the energy gap is always direct, and the optical transition matrix elements are comparable to those of the direct energy gap bulk semiconductors. They decrease with decreasing wire width due to mixing of the bulk Gamma(1) state with other states. All quantum confinement properties are discussed and explained by our theoretical model and the semiconductor energy band structures derived. The calculated lifetimes of the Si wire, and the positions of photoluminescence peaks, are in good agreement with experimental results.

Fe-N films were deposited on Si(100) and GaAs(100) substrates at room temperature by ion beam assisted deposition under various N/ Fe atomic arrival ratio, 0.09, 0.12, 0.15. The results of X-ray diffraction indicated that the film deposited at 0.12 of N/Fe arrival ratio contained a considerable fraction of the Fe16N2 phase which had grown predominantly in the [001] orientation. For the larger N/Fe arrival ratio, a martensite phase with 15 at.% nitrogen was obtained. It was found that a lower deposition temperature (<200 degrees C) was necessary for the formation of the Fe16N2 phase.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) have been used to study the oxides from a Si0.5Ge0.5 alloy grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The oxidation was performed at 1000 degrees C wet atmosphere. The oxide consists of two layers: a mixed (Si,Ge)O-x layer near the surface and a pure SiOx layer underneath. Ge is rejected from the pure SiOx and piles up at the SiOx/SiGe interface. XPS analysis demonstrates that the chemical shifts of Si 2p and Ge 3d in the oxidized Si0.5Ge0.5 are significantly larger than those in SiO2 and GeO2 formed from pure Si and Ge crystals.

Polymorphous Si nanowires (SiNWS) have been successfully synthesized on Si wafer by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at 440degreesC,using silane as the Si source and Au as the catalyst. To grow the polymorphous SiNWS preannealing the Si substrate with Au film at 1100 degreesC is needed. The diameters of Si nanowires range from 15 to 100 urn. The structure morphology and chemical composition of the SiNWS have been characterized by high resolution x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, as well as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. A few interesting nanowires with Au nanoclusters uniformly distributed in the body of the wire were also produced by this technique.

Preharvest sprouting (PHS) is a serious problem in crop production. It often takes place when encountering damp, cold conditions at harvest time and results in the decrease of grain quality and great loss of yield by triggering the synthesis of endosperm degrading enzymes (mostly the α-amylase). Therefore, PHS is regarded as an important criterion for crop breeding. In order to minimize the risk of PHS, resistant genotypes are highly required. Hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare) is the staple food crop in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau from of old, where is one of the origin and genetic diversity centers of hulless barley. Recently, interest in hulless barley has been sparked throughout the world due to the demonstrations of its great potential in health food industry and fuel alcohol production. Indeed, hulless barley can also be utilized to produce good quality malt if the appropriate malting conditions are used. In China, overcast and rainy conditions often occur at maturity of hulless barley and cause an adverse on its production and application. PHS resistant genotypes, therefore, are highly required for the hulless barley breeding programs. However, few investigations have been made so far on this issue. The objectives of this study were: 1) to assessment of methods used in testing preharvest sprouting resistance in hulless barley; 2) to evaluate the variability and characteristics of PHS resistance of hulless barley from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China; 3) to select potential parents for PHS resistance breeding; 4) to primarily study on the molecular mechanism of PHS resistance of hulless barley. Our results are as followed: 1. We investigated the temperature effects on seed germination and seed dormancy expression of hulless barley, discussed appropriate temperature range for screening of PHS resistant varieties, and analyzed the mechanism of seed dormancy expression of hulless barley. The dormancy level of 13 hulless barley were evaluated by GI (germination index) values calculating by seed germination tests at temperature of 10,15,20,25,30℃ in darkness. There were great differences in temperature sensitivity among these accessions. The insensitive accessions showed low dormancy at any temperature while the dormancy expression of sensitive accessions could be restrained by low temperature and induced by high temperature. The temperature range of 15℃ to 25℃ was workable for estimating of dormancy level of hulless barley according to our data. Analysis of α-amylase activity showed that the temperature effects on seed germination and the expression of seed dormancy be achieved probable via regulating of α-amylase activity. Furthermore, we evaluated the differences in sprouting index (SI), sprouting rate (SR), germination index (GI) and α-amylase activity (AA) between Maerkang and Chengdu among 34 accessions of hulless barley from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in China. These PHS sprouting parameters were significantly affected by accession×location, and they had correlation between each other. GI was the most reliable parameter because of its low CV value, good repeatability and simple operation. SI could assist in differentiating between accessions of similar dormancy or overall evaluation of the resistance. AA was bad in repeatability and had relatively complex testing method, therefore, not appropriate for breeding and evaluation and screening of PHS resistant materials. Besides, since PHS resistance of hulless barley was greatly influenced by its growth environment, possibly much influencing factors and variations between cultivated conditions should be considered. 2. In this study, large variation was found among 113 genotypes of hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp.vulgare) from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in China, based on the sprouting index (SI), germination index (GI) and α-amylase activity (AA) which derived from sprouting test of intact spikes, germination test of threshed seeds and determination of α-amylase activity, respectively. The range of SI, GI and AA was 1.00~8.86, 0.01~0.97 and 0.00~2.76,the mean was 4.72, 0.63 and 1.22 espectively. Six resistant genotypes, including ‘XQ9-5’, ‘XQ33-9’, ‘XQ37-5’, ‘XQ42-9’, ‘XQ45-7’ and ‘JCL’, were identified based on SI. Integrating the three parameters, it was clear that both hulls and seeds involved in PHS resistance in intact spikes of hulless barley and there was no long-existent embryo dormancy found among the test genotypes. All the genotypes, except ‘XQ45-7’, had detectable α-amylase activity on the 4th day after germination. There was PHS resistance imposed by the hull and seed per se and the two factors can act together or independent of each other. Besides, landraces or Tibet hulless barley had a wider variation and relatively more PHS resistance when compared with cultivars or Sichuan hulless barley. No significant difference was found among hulless barley of different seed colors. The correlation analysis showed PHS resistance was negatively related to hundred grain weight, days to flowering, days to maturity, spike length, awn length and flag length but not related to plant height. This study provides essential information and several donor parents for breeding of resistance to PHS. 3. Alpha-amylase isozymes are encoded by a family of multigenes. They highly express in germinating seeds and is closely related to seed germination ability. In barley germinating seeds, the activity of high pI α-amylase is much higher than low pI α-amylase. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between preharvest sprouting resistance of hulless barley and the gene structure of Amy1 gene which encodes high pI α-amylase. The coding region and cDNA of Amy1 gene of three resistant accessions, including ‘XQ32-5’ (TR1), ‘XQ37-5’ (TR2), ‘XQ45-7’ (TR3), two susceptible accessions ‘97-15’ (TS1), ‘9657’ (TS2) and one highly dormant barley accession ‘SAMSON’ (SAM) was cloned. Analysis of their DNA sequences revealed there were three exons and two introns in Amy1 gene. Thirteen variable sites were in exon2 and exon3, 2 variable sites were in intron2. SAM and TS1 had a GAACT insert segment in the same site in intron2. Only 8 variable sites caused the change of amino acid residues. There were 99% of similarity between the tested hulless barley and some of the variable sites might be related with preharvest sprouting resistance. Then, we investigated the expression level of Amy1 gene in the 7-day germination test. Results of quantitative real-time PCR indicated that the relative expression trends of Amy1 gene were the same but had significant differences in the increase fashion between hulless barleys and no detectable expression was found in SAM. Susceptible accessions had earlier expression and faster increase and reached the maximum on day 4 ~ day 5. Besides, total transcripts level was found lower in resistant accessions than susceptible accessions. This study indicated that α-amylase activity was highly related to the transcription level of Amy1 gene which not correlated to missense mutation sites. In conclusion, hulless barley, especially the landraces from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in China possesses high degree of variation in PHS performance, which indicates the potential of Tibetan hulless barley as a good source for breeding of resistance to PHS. This study provides several donor parents for breeding of resistance to PHS. Our results also demonstrate that agronomic traits may be used as assistants for PHS resistance selection in hulless barley. Besides, analysis of high pI α-amylase coding gene Amy1 revealed the relative high expression of was Amy1 one of the mainly reason of different PHS resistance level in hulless barley.

The bulk moduli of some superhard materials were calculated by using the chemical bond method. For simple crystals, such as diamonds, c-BN, SiC, Si, BP, and Ge, the calculated results agree with experimental and theoretical values. For crystals of complex structure, such as beta-BC2N crystal and various structural C3N4 crystals, the results indicate that their bulk moduli are large, but do not exceed that of diamond.

A new class of organic-inorganic hybrid porous clay heterostructures (HPCHs) have been prepared through the surfactant-directed assembly of organosilica in the galleries of montmorillonite. The reaction involved hydrolysis and condensation of phenyltriethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane in the presence of intragallery surfactant templates (dodecylame and cetyltrimethylammonium ion). The surfactant templates were removed from the pores by solvent-extraction. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, solid-state Si-29 and C-13 NMR, and FTIR. XRD patterns indicated a regular interstratification of the clay layers for HPCHs. Depending on loading of phenyl groups, HPCHs had BET surface areas of 390-771 m(2) g(-1), pore volumes of 0.3-0.59 cm(3) g(-1), and the framework pore sizes in the supermicropore to small mesopore range (1.2-2.6 nm). HPCHs were hydrophobic and acidic.

The interaction of silica with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes has been studied by detecting H-1 and 2D NOESY NMR spectra and measuring proton spin-lattice relaxation time (T-1). The antagonistic effect of aluminium citrate on silica has also been studied by measuring the proton T-1 values, The results show that silica particles mainly bind to the phosphate moiety of the polar headgroup of DPPC bilayers through hydrogen bonds between Si-OH and O-P groups, but they have no significant effect on the conformation of the choline group of the polar headgroup, The addition of silica particles decreases the mobilities of the hydrocarbon chains slightly, Proton T-1 data also indicate that aluminium citrate reduces the effect of silica, A possible mechanism for the toxicity of silica and the antagonistic effect of aluminium titrate on silica is suggested. A novel Prussian blue chemically modified electrode (CME) was constructed and characterized for liquid chromatography electrochemical detection (LCEC) of catecholamines. Both anodic and cathodic peaks could be obtained by monitoring at constant applied potential at anodic and slightly cathodic potential ranges (0.3-0.7 and -0.2-0.1 V vs. SCE), respectively. When arranged in a series configuration, using the modified electrodes as generating and collecting detectors, extremely high effective collection efficiencies of 0.91 (for norepinephrine) and 0.58 (for dihydroxyphenylacetic acid) were achieved in dual-electrode LCEC for catecholamines; and a linear response range over 3 orders of magnitude and a detection limit of 10 pg were obtained with a downstream CME as the indicating detector.

In "high nitrate, low chlorophyll" (HNLC) ocean regions, iron has been typically regarded as the limiting factor for phytoplankton production. This "iron hypothesis" needs to be tested in various oceanic environments to understand the role of iron in marine biological and biogeochemical processes. In this paper, three in vitro iron enrichment experiments were performed in Prydz Bay and at the Polar Front north of the Ross Sea, to study the role of iron on phytoplankton production. At the Polar Front of Ross Sea, iron addition significantly (P < 0.05, Student's t-test) stimulated phytoplankton growth. In Prydz Bay, however, both the iron treatments and the controls showed rapid phytoplankton growth, and no significant effect (P > 0.05, Student's t-test) as a consequence of iron addition was observed. These results confirmed the limiting role of iron in the Ross Sea and indicated that iron was not the primary factor limiting phytoplankton growth in Prydz Bay. Because the light environment for phytoplankton was enhanced in experimental bottles, light was assumed to be responsible for the rapid growth of phytoplankton in all treatments and to be the limiting factor controlling field phytoplankton growth in Prydz Bay. During the incubation experiments, nutrient consumption ratios also changed with the physiological status and the growth phases of phytoplankton cells. When phytoplankton growth was stimulated by iron addition, N was the first and Si was the last nutrient which absorption enhanced. The Si/N and Si/P consumption ratios of phytoplankton in the stationary and decay phases were significantly higher than those of rapidly growing phytoplankton. These findings were helpful for studies of the marine ecosystem and biogeochemistry in Prydz Bay, and were also valuable for biogeochemical studies of carbon and nutrients in various marine environments.

Geochemical analyses have been carried out on the samples taken from the last 250 ka wind-blown loess-paleosol sequences at Huanxian, Xifeng, Changwu, and Lantian in central Chinese Loess Plateau. The result shows: 1) that major changes in chemical composition of the loess-paleoso! sequences are due to leaching and reprecipitation of carbonates, and resulted from dust grain size changes rather than chemical weathering of silicates; 2) that Si/Ti, Si/AI, and Si/Fe ratios can be used as a proxy of dust deposition intensity, and Na/AI ratio can also be used as indicator of climatic changes in genera! rather than of the summer monsoon intensity. Our results show that chemical composition was controlled by dust deposition and weathering, and imply changes of climate and environment in the Loess Plateau during last 250,000 years.
