MnSb/porous silicon hybrid structure was prepared by physical vapor deposition technique. The structure and surface morphology of the MnSb films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, respectively. The magnetic hysteresis loops were obtained by an alternative gradient magnetometer. Based on the measurements, only MnSb phase was found and the surface morphology was rough and island-like. MnSb thin films show ferromagnetism at room temperature. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Influences of reactor pressure of GaN buffer layers on morphological evolution of GaN grown by MOCVD
Resumo:
The morphological evolution of GaN thin films grown on sapphire by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition was demonstrated to depend strongly on the growth pressure of GaN nucleation layer (NL). For the commonly used two-step growth process, a change in deposition pressure of NL greatly influences the growth mode and morphological evolution of the following GaN epitaxy. By means of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscope, it is shown that the initial density and the spacing of nucleation sites on the NL and subsequently the growth mode of FIT GaN epilayer may be directly controlled by tailoring the initial low temperature NL growth pressure. A mode is proposed to explain the TD reduction for NL grown at relatively high reactor pressure. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of reactor pressure on GaN nucleation layer (NL) and the quality of subsequent GaN on sapphire is studied. The layers were grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on c-plane sapphire substrates and investigated by in situ laser reflectometry, atomic force microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence. With the increase of reactor pressure prior to high-temperature GaN growth, the size of GaN nuclei formed after annealing decreases, the spacing between nucleation sites increases and the coalescence of GaN nuclei is deferred. The optical and crystalline qualities of GaN epilayer were improved when NLs were deposited at high pressure. The elongated lateral overgrowth of GaN islands is responsible for the quality improvement. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Cubic GaN was grown on GaAs(100) by low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were performed to characterize the quality of the GaN film. The PL spectra of cubic GaN thin films being thicker than 1.5 mu m were reported. Triple-crystal diffraction to analyze orientation distributions and strain of the thin films was also demonstrated.

The structural and surface properties of AlInGaN quaternary films grown at different temperatures on GaN templates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition are investigated. Formation of two quaternary layers is confirmed and the difference between them is pronounced when the growth temperature is increased. The surface is featured with V-shaped pits and cracks, whose characteristics are further found to be strongly dependent on the growth temperature of AlInGaN layers. The two-layer structure is interpreted by taking into account of the strain status in AlInGaN layers. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The corrosion inhibition behavior of benzotriazole, Na3PO4 and their mixture on carbon steel in 20 wt.% (0.628 mol l(-1)) tetra-n-butylammonium bromide aerated aqueous solution was investigated by weight-loss test, potentiodynamic polarization measurement, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray techniques. The inhibition action of BTA or SP or inhibitors mixture on the corrosion of carbon steel is mainly due to the inhibition of anodic process of corrosion. The results revealed that inhibitors mixtures have shown synergistic effects at lower concentration of inhibitors. At 2 g l(-1) BTA and 2 g l(-1) SP showed optimum enhanced inhibition compared with their individual effects.

The dislocations and precipitates in SI-GaAs single crystals are revealed by ultrasonic-aided Abrahams-Buiocchi etching (USAB), and the etch pits are observed and measured by metalloscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), respectively. The size of etch pit revealed by USAB etching is about 1 order of magnitude smaller than that revealed by molten KOH. The amount of arsenic atoms in the dislocation-dense zone is about 1% larger than that in an adjacent dislocation-free zone measured by EDS attached to SEM, which indicates that the excess arsenic atoms adjacent to the dislocation-dense zone are attracted to the dislocations and precipitate there due to the deformation energy.

The Ni/Au contact was treated with oxalic acid after annealing in O_2 ambient, and its I-V characteristic showed the property of contact has been obviously improved. An Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth pro-file of the contact as-annealed showed that the top layer was highly resistive NiO, while an X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) of oxalic acid treated samples indicated that the NiO has been removed effectively. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphology of the contacts, and it was found that the lacunaris surface right after annealing became quite smooth with lots of small Au exposed areas after oxalic acid treatment. When the test probe or the subsequently deposited Ti/Au was directly in contact with these small Au areas, they worked as low resistive current paths and thus decrease the specific contact resistance.

ZnO nanorod arrays with different morphologies were grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The diameters of nanorods range from 150 nm to 20 nm through changing the carrier gas flux during the growth process. Measurements such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering and photoluminescence (pL) spectrum were employed to analyze the differences of these nanorods. It was found that when both carrier gas flux of Zn and O reactant are 1 SLM, we can obtain the best vertically aligned and uniform nanorods. Furthermore, the PL spectrum reveals a blueshift of UV emission peak, which may be assigned to the increase of surface effect.

A superhydrophobic surface has many advantages in micro/nanomechanical applications, such as low adhesion, low friction and high restitution coefficient, etc. In this paper, we introduce a novel and simple route to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces using ZnO nanocrystals. First, tetrapod-like ZnO nanocrystals were prepared via a one-step, direct chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. The nanostructured ZnO material was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the surface functionalized by aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) was found to be hydrophobic. Then the superhydrophobic surface was constructed by depositing uniformly ZnO hydrophobic nanoparticles (HNPs) on the Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) film substrate. Water wettability study revealed a contact angle of 155.4 +/- 2 degrees for the superhydrophobic surface while about 110 degrees for pure smooth PDMS films. The hysteresis was quite low, only 3.1 +/- 0.3 degrees. Microscopic observations showed that the surface was covered by micro- and nano-scale ZnO particles. Compared to other approaches, this method is rather convenient and can be used to obtain a large area superhydrophobic surface. The high contact angle and low hysteresis could be attributed to the micro/nano structures of ZnO material; besides, the superhydrophobic property of the as-constructed ZnO-PDMS surface could be maintained for at least 6 months. Coupling with bionic principles, an attempt to improve the wear resistance of ball bearing steel (GCr15) with biomimetic units on the surface was made using a pulsed Nd: YAG laser. Air and water film was employed as processing medium, respectively. The microstructures of biomimeitc units were examined by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction was used to describe the microstructure and identify the phases as functions of different mediums as well as water film with different thicknesses. The results indicated that the microstructure zones in the biomimetic specimens processed with water film were more refined and had better wear resistance increased by 55.8% in comparison with that processed in air; a significant improvement in microhardness was achieved by laser surface melting. The application of water film provided considerable microstructural changes and much more regular grain shape in biomimetic units, which played a key role in improving the wear resistance of ball bearing steel. This paper focuses on improving the thermal fatigue resistance on the surface of vermicular cast iron coupling with inserted H13 steel blocks that had different cross sections, by cast-in processing. The microstructure of bionic units was examined by scanning electron microscope. Micro-hardness and thermal fatigue resistance of bionic samples with varied cross sections and spacings were investigated, respectively. Results show that a marked metallurgical bonding zone was produced at interface between the inserted H13 steel block and the parent material - a unique feature of the bionic structure in the vermicular cast iron samples. The micro-hardness of the bionic samples has been significantly improved. Thermal resistance of the samples with the circular cross section was the highest and the bionics sample with spacing of 2 mm spacing had a much longer thermal fatigue life, thus resulting in the improvement for the thermal fatigue life of the bionic samples, due to the efficient preclusion for the generation and propagation of crack at the interface of H13 block and the matrix. Microcoleus vaginatus Gom., the dominant species in biological soil crusts (BSCs) in desert regions, plays a significant role in maintaining the BSC structure and function. The BSC quality is commonly assessed by the chlorophyll a content, thickness, and compressive strength. Here, we have studied the effect of different proportions of M. vaginatus, collected from the Gurbantunggut Desert in northwestern China, on the BSC structure and function under laboratory conditions. We found that when M. vaginatus was absent in the BSC, the BSC coverage, quantified by the percentage of BSC area to total land surface area, was low with a chlorophyll a content of 4.77 x 10(-2) mg g(-1) dry soil, a thickness of 0.86 mm, and a compressive strength of 12.21 Pa. By increasing the percentage of M. vaginatus in the BSC, the BSC coverage, chlorophyll a content, crust thickness, and compressive strength all significantly increased (P < 0.01). The maximum chlorophyll a content (13.12 mg g(-1)dry soil), the highest crust thickness, and the compressive strength (1.48 mm and 36.60 Pa, respectively) occurred when the percentage of inoculated M. vaginatus reached 80% with a complex network of filaments under scanning electron microscope. The BSC quality indicated by the above variables, however, declined when the BSC was composed of pure M. vaginatus (monoculture). In addition, we found that secretion of filaments and polymer, which stick sands together in the BSC, increased remarkably with the increase of the dominant species until the percentage of M. vaginatus reached 80%. Our results suggest that not only the dominant species but also the accompanying taxa are critical for maintaining the structure and functions of the BSC and thus the stability of the BSC ecosystems.

Here, we demonstrated dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB), a cationic lipid, bilayer coated Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) could efficiently deliver two types of plasmid DNA into human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293) in the presence of serum. The transfection efficiency of AuNPs was about five times higher than that of DODAB. The interaction of AuNPs with DNA was characterized with dye intercalation assay and agarose gel electrophoresis. The morphology of the complex of AuNPs with DNA was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The intracellular trafficking of the complex was monitored with transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Biodegradable poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) foams with a series of controlled structures were prepared by using chemical foaming method. The cell morphology was detected by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The compressive behavior of the foams was investigated by uniaxial compression test. The effect of density and structural parameters on the foam compressive behavior was analyzed. It was found that the relative compressive modulus has a power law relationship with relative density. Increasing of both the cell wall thickness and the cell density lead to higher compressive modulus of the foam; however, the cell size has no distinct effect on compressive behavior.
