abstract {Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique is an effective method for the chemical composition analysis of ancient glass samples without destruction. Chemical composition of the ancient glass samples dated from the Warring States Period (770-476 B.C.) to the Six Dynasties Period (220-589 A.D.), which were unearthed in Sichuan area, was quantitatively determined by the PIXE technique. The results show that the glass Bi (disc) and the glass eye beads of the Warring States Period all belong to the PbO-BaO-SiO<sub>2</sub> system. According to the composition and shape, we infer that these glass Bi and eye beads were made in China. Whereas, the chemical compositions of the glass ear pendants and beads of the Six Dynasties Period are varied, including K<sub>2</sub>O-CaO-SiO<sub>2</sub>, K<sub>2</sub>O-SiO<sub>2</sub> and other glass systems. Based on the obtained results and those from literatures, some questions related to the technical propagation of the ancient Chinese glass are discussed.}

Phosphate glasses 60P<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf>-15CS<inf>2</inf>O- 15Al<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>-10BaO were made by high temperature melt-annealing method. The absorption spectra, excitation spectra and emission spectra of Gd3+-Tb3+ and Ce<inf>3+</inf>-Gd3+-Tb3+ co-doped phosphate glass 60P<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf>-15CS<inf>2</inf>O- 15Al<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>-10BaO were studied. The experimental results indicate that, the doping of Ce<inf>3+</inf> and Gd3+ in Tb3+ phosphate glass has a good effect on the 545 nm emission of Tb3+ at UV excitation. The Ce<inf>3+</inf>-Gd3+-Tb3+ co-doped phosphate glass have a good x-ray luminescence at the radiation of x-ray with energy in 50-120 kev, and a high space resolution. The Ce<inf>3+</inf>-Gd3+-Tb3+ co-doped phosphate luminescence glass is a promising material for using in the digital radiography system in medical devices.

Variations of peak position of the rocking curve in the Bragg case are measured from a Ge thin crystal near the K-absorption edge. The variations are caused by a phase change of the real part of the atomic scattering factor. Based on the measurement, the values of the real part are determined with an accuracy of better than 1%. The values are the most reliable ones among those reported values so far as they are directly determined from the normal atomic scattering factors.

The basic elements of Bragg-Fresnel multilayer optics are multilayer gratings. In this paper, the fabrication process for the simplest Bragg-Fresnel multilayer optics is given; the diffraction measurements at 8-keV x rays of multilayer gratings are presented; and the measurement results in the diffraction spectrum are analyzed and discussed in detail. A study on the layer structure of W/C multilayers deposited by magnetron sputtering is reported. In the study, soft x-ray resonant reflectivity and hard x-ray grazing incidence reflectivity of the W/C multilayers were measured. The imperfections at the interface such as interdiffusion and formation of compounds were dealt with by two methods. On analyzing the experimental results, we found that the incorporation of an interlayer was a more suitable method than the traditional statistical method to describe the layer structure of a W/C system we fabricated. The optical constants of each layer at a wavelength of 4.48 nm were also obtained from the analysis. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
