Polyaniline (PANI) in an emeraldine-base form, synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization, was doped with camphor sulfonic acid (CSA). The conducting complex (PANI-CSA) and a matrix, polyamide-66, polyamide-11, or polyamide-1010, were dissolved in a mixed solvent, and the blend solution was dropped onto glass and dried for the preparation of PANI/polyamide composite films. The conductivity of the films ranged from 10(-7) to 10(0) S/cm when the weight fraction of PANI-CSA in the matrices changed from 0.01 to 0.09, and the percolation threshold was about 2 wt %. The morphology of the composite films before and after etching was studied with scanning electron microscopy, and the thermal properties of the composite films were monitored with differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicated that the morphology of the blend systems was in a globular form. The addition of PANI-CSA to the films resulted in a decrease in the melting temperature of the composite films and also affected the crystallinity of the blend systems.

A novel side-chain, liquid-crystalline ionomer (SLCI) with a poly(methyl hydrosiloxane) main chain and side chains containing sulfonic acid groups was used in blends of polyamide-1010 (PA1010) and polypropylene (PP) as a compatibilizer. The morphological structure, thermal behavior, and liquid-crystalline properties of the blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The morphological structure of the interface of the blends containing SLCI was improved with respect to the blend without SLCI. The compatibilization effect of greater than 8 wt % SLCI for the two phases, PA1010 and PP, was better than the effects of other SLCI contents in the blends.

The structure and thermal properties of polyamide-1010 (PA1010), treated at 250degreesC for 30 min under pressures of 0.7-2.5 GPa, were studied with wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), infrared (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Crystals were formed when the pressures were less than 1.0 GPa or greater than 1.2 GPa. With increasing pressure, the intensity of the diffraction peak at approximately 24degrees was enhanced, whereas the peak at approximately 20degrees was depressed. The triclinic crystal structure of PA1010 was preserved. The highest melting temperature of the crystals obtained in this work was 208degreesC for PA1010 treated at 1.5 GPa. Crosslinking occurred under pressures of 1.0-1.2 GPa. Only a broad diffraction peak centered at approximately 20degrees was observed on WAXD patterns, and no melting and crystallization peaks were found on DSC curves. IR spectra of crosslinked PA1010 showed a remarkable absorption band at 1370 cm(-1). The N-H stretching vibration band at 3305 cm(-1) was weakened. Crystallized PA1010 had a higher thermal stability than crosslinked PA1010, as indicated on TGA curves by a higher onset temperature of decomposition.

A new kind of aromatic diaminospirodilactone, i.e. 6,6'-diamino-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide, was synthesized through multistep reactions from p-nitrotoulene and paraformaldehyde, It was: found that dinitrospirolactone could be synthesized directly in the acid system through oxidation reaction with a high yield, The increase of solvent polarity leads to an increase of reduction yield of dinitrolactone. The resulting intermediates 6, 6'-dihydroxylamino-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide and 6-amino-6'-hydroxylanimo-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide were steady aromatic hydroxylamine. The structures of 6, 6'-diamino-3, 3'-spirobiphthalide and its intermediates were confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, MS, IR and elemental analyses.

Full Paper: Two new 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl-based dianhydrides, i.e., 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride (BNDADA) and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzoyloxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride (BNDEDA), were synthesized and polymerized with various aromatic diamines to afford polyimides through the traditional two-step method. The polyimides with inherent viscosities ranging from 0.27 to 0.70 dl . g(-1) showed excellent solubilities in polar solvents such as DMAc, DMSO and NMP etc., except of the poly(ester imide) prepared from BNDEDA and benzidine. Poly(ester imide)s based on BNDEDA can also be readily dissolved in weakly polar solvents such as THF, CH2Cl2 and CHCl3. The glass transition temperatures of these polyimides are in the range of 210-310 degrees C; the 5% weight loss temperatures are in the range of 390-465 degrees C in nitrogen and 384-447 degrees c in air. These polymers from light yellow, tough films that were transparent above 365 nm. The effects of different flexible units attached in the 2- and 2'-positions, i.e., amide, ester and ether, on the properties of the polyimides obtained are discussed.

Recent advances in the gas - phase reaction of aromatics with cationic electrophiles are reviewed. The overall substitution reaction is analyzed in terms of its elementary steps. Mechanistic studies have been focused on the structure and reactivity of covalent and non - covalent ionic intermediates, which display a rich chemistry and provide benchmark reactivity models. Particular attention has been devoted to proton transfer reactions, which may occur intra or intermolecularly in arenium intermediates.

4-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride, prepared from 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, was reacted with trimellitic anhydride monoacid chloride or arylene diacid chloride to give aromatic ester-containing dianhydrides (EDAs). These dianhydrides were characterized by element analysis, melt point, FTIR and H-1-NMR. A series of aromatic poly (amic ester acid)s was synthesized by polycondensation of these EDAs and various diamines in polar organic solvent. The inherent viscosity of poly (amic ester acid)s ranged from 0.55 to 0.89 dL/g, indicating the intermediate to higher molecular weight. Polyesterimides having glass transition temperatures between 184-219degreesC were produced by thermal imidization of corresponding poly (amic ester acid)s. These polymers were fairly resistant to organic solvent, but some of them were soluble in phenol solvents. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed that these polyesterimides were stable up to 400degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 432-483degreesC in air atmosphers and 451-490degreesC in nitrogen.

Polyaniline (PANI), a member of the intrinsically conducting polymer (ICPs) family, was blended with polyamide-11 (polyco-aminoundecanoyle) in concentrated sulfuric acid. The above solution was used to spin conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers by wet-spinning technology. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to study the two-phase morphology of the conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers. The micrographs of the cross-section, the axial section and the surface of the monofilament demonstrated that the two blend components were incompatible. The morphology of PANI in the fibers was of fibrillar form, which was valuable for producing conducting channels. The electrical conductivity of the fibers was from 10(-6) to 10(-1) S/cm with the different PANI fraction and the percolation threshold was about 5 wt.%. By comparing the two blend systems of PANI/Polyamide-11 fibers and carbon black filled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers, it was shown that the morphology of the conductive component had an influence on electrical conductivity, The former had higher conductivity and lower percolation threshold than the latter. In this paper, blends of Nylon 6,6 with the liquid crystal polymer Vectra A950 are considered; specifically we focused our attention on Nylon 6,6 modifications by interchange reactions that can occur in the melt, as a function of mixing conditions and blend compositions. Two matrix samples have been used, characterised by a slightly different relative amount of amine and carboxylic end groups, being the latter predominant in both cases. The dried polymers Nylon 6,6/Vectra, combined in weight ratios between 95/5 and 50/50, were subjected to reactive blending with different methods (single-screw extruder, Brabender, pyrex reactor). Pure Nylon samples have been also investigated as reference materials. The soluble Nylon 6,6-rich fraction of each blend was separated from the insoluble Vectra-rich one and used for molecular and spectroscopic characterisations. Thermal and morphological analyses, as well as testing of tensile properties, were carried out on the blends. Evidences of the occurrence of interchange reactions are given and the most probable ones are suggested. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optically active 2,2'-bis(2-trifluoro-4-aminophenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl and its corresponding racemate were prepared by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol with 2-chloro-5-nitrotrifluorotoluene and subsequently by the reduction of the resulting dinitro compounds. a series of optically active and optically inactive aromatic polyimides also were prepared therefrom, These polymers readily were soluble in common organic solvents such as pyridine, N,N'-dimethylacetamide, and m-cresol and had glass-transition temperatures of 256 similar to 278 degrees C. The specific rotations of the chiral polymers ranged from 167 similar to 258 degrees, and their chiroptical properties also were studied. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons Inc.

The crystallization, dynamic mechanical properties, tensile properties and morphology features of polyamidel 1010(PA1010) blends with the high impact polystyrere (HIPS) and maleic anhydride (MA) grafted HIPS(HIPS-g-MA) were examined at a wide composition range. By comparison the PA1010/HIPS-g-MA and PA1010/HIPS binary blends, it was found that the size of the domains of HIPS-g-MA was much smaller than that of HIPS at the same compositions. It was found that the mechanical properties of PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends were obviously higher than those of PA1010/HIPS blends. When the content of PA1010 is more than 50wt% in the blends, the crystallization temperatures, T-cs, of PA1010 increase with increasing the content of HIPS-g-MA. On the other hand, when the content of PA1010 in the blends is less than 35wt% the fraction crystallization is observed. The same result is not obtained for the blends of PA1010/HIPS. These behaviors could be attributed to the chemical interactions between the two components and good dispersion in PA1010/HIPS-g-MA blends.

Aimed at saving the radiation dose required to crosslinking the polyamid-1010, BMI/PA1010 systems containing different amounts of difunctional crosslinking agent N,N'-bis-maleimide-4,4'-biphenyl methane (BMI) were prepared and the structure changes at the crystallographic and supermolecular levels before and after irradiation were studied by using WAXD, SAXS, and DSC techniques. It was found that by incorporation of BMI the microcrystal size L-100 is lowered due to the formation of hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen of BMI and the amide hydrogen of PA1010 in the hydrogen bonded plane, and the overall crystallinity W-c is also decreased. The presence of BMI causes the crystal lamella thickness d(c) to decrease and greatly thickens the transition zone d(tr) between the crystalline and amorphous regions. As for the irradiated specimen, the maximum increments in the L-100 and W-c against dose curves decrease with BMI content, and the interception point D-i, at which the L-100 and W-c curves intercept their respective horizontal line of L-100/L-100(0) and W-c/W-c(0)=1, shift to lower dose with an increase in BMI concentration. In addition. the mechanism of the radiation chemical reactions in the three different phases under the action of BMI are discussed with special focus on the interface region. Electrochemical detection of five species of aromatic amines at a carbon fiber microdisk electrode after separation by capillary electrophoresis is described. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limit for 3,4-dihydroxybenzylamine, N,N-dimethylaniline, p-phenylenediamine, p-aminophenol and aniline sulfate was 0.9, 0.03, 0.075, 1.2 and 0.15 mu M (S/N = 3), respectively. The linear response range was 5-1000, 0.1-500, 0.5-500, 5-500 and 1-200 mu M, respectively The effect of the electrode position and buffer pH on the detection was also studied. This method is very simple, sensitive and stable for the detection of these compounds.

The interface behavior of polyamide 1010 (PA1010) and polypropylene (PP) was studied. In order to improve their interfacial adhesion, functional PP was prepared by means of grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on PP main chains and used instead of plain PP. Several technological characterizations were performed here on their interfaces. ESCA was used to confirm that some kind of reaction occurred between end groups of PA1010 and epoxy species of PP-g-GMA. The peel test was adopted to measure interfacial adhesion. It was found that the fracture energy of interfaces between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA was dramatically increased with the content of GMA. Their interfaces were observed as being blurred by using SEM and TEM and a crack that could be seen in the case of the interfaces of the PA1010 and the plain PP disappeared.
