TiO2 single layers and TiO2/SiO2 high reflectors (HR) are prepared by electron beam evaporation at different TiO2 deposition rates. It is found that the changes of properties of TiO2 films with the increase of rate, such as the increase of refractive index and extinction coefficient and the decrease of physical thickness, lead to the spectrum shift and reflectivity bandwidth broadening of HR together with the increase of absorption and decrease of laser-induced damage threshold. The damages are found of different morphologies: a shallow pit to a seriously delaminated and deep crater, and the different amorphous-to-anatase-to-rutile phase transition processes detected by Raman study. The frequency shift of Raman vibration mode correlates with the strain in. film. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis reveals that impurities and non-stoichiometric defects are two absorption initiations resulting to the laser-induced transformation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V. The third-order optical nonlinear refractive properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dots grown by molecular beam epitaxy have been measured using the reflection Z-scan technique at above-bandgap energy. The nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption index of the InAs/GaAs quantum dots were determined for wavelengths from 740 to 777 nm. The measured results are compared with the nonlinear refractive response of several typical III-V group semiconductor materials. The corresponding mechanisms responsible for the large nonlinear response are discussed.

We perform first-principles calculations of electronic structure and optical properties for UO2 and PuO2 based on the density functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) + U scheme. The main features in orbital-resolved partial density of states for occupied f and p orbitals, unoccupied d orbitals, and related gaps are well reproduced compared to experimental observations. Based on the satisfactory ground-state electronic structure calculations, the dynamical dielectric function and related optical spectra, i.e., the reflectivity, adsorption coefficient, energy-loss, and refractive index spectrum, are obtained. These results are consistent with the available experiments.

Large-area concave refractive microlens arrays, or concave template structures, and then the non-refractive-index-gradient type of planar refractive microlens arrays in InP and quartz substrates, are fabricated utilizing the method consisting of conventional UV photolithography, thermal shaping of concave photoresist microlenses, etching with an argon ion beam of large diameter, and filling or growing optical medium structures onto the curved surfaces of preshaped concave templates. Several key conditions for fabricating concave and also planar microlenses are discussed in detail. The concave structures obtained are characterized by scanning electron microscope and surface profile measurements. The far-field optical characteristics of quartz/ZrO2 planar refractive microlens arrays have been acquired experimentally. (c) 2008 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Undoped and Al-, Ga-, and In-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were prepared on fused quartz substrates by chemical solution deposition. Their microstructures and optical properties were investigated by x-ray diffraction and UV-visible-NIR spectrophotometer, respectively. The optical band-gap energies, Urbach energies, and linear refractive indices of all the films are derived from the transmittance spectrum. Following the single oscillator model, the dispersion parameters such as the average oscillator energy (E-0) and dispersion energy (E-d) are achieved. The energy band gap and refractive indices are found to decrease with introducing the dopants of Al, Ga, and In, which is useful for the band-gap engineering and optical waveguide devices. The refractive index dispersion parameter (E-0/S-0) increases and the chemical bonding quantity (beta) decreases in all the films compared with those of bulk. Optical properties of Al0.9Ga0.1As/Al gamma Ga1-gamma As/GaAs/Al chi Ga1-chi As DBR with inhomogeneous graded interfaces has been investigated by using characteristic matrix method. The refractive index model and the analytic characteristic matrix of graded interfaces are obtained. The reflectance spectrum and the reflective phase shift are calculated for GaAs/Al-0.9 Ga-0.1 As DBR and graded interfaces DBR by using characteristic matrix method. The effect of graded interfaces on the optical properties of DBR is discussed. The result shows an extra graded phase matching layer must he added in front of the graded interfaces DBR to fulfil the conditions of phase matching at central wavelength. The accurate thickness of phase matching layer is calculated by optical thickness approximation method.

The mode frequency and the quality factor of nanowire cavities are calculated from the intensity spectrum obtained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique and the Pade approximation. In a free-standing nanowire cavity with dielectric constant epsilon = 6.0 and a length of 5 mu m, quality factors of 130, 159, and 151 are obtained for the HE11 modes with a wavelength around 375 nm, at cavity radius of 60, 75, and 90 nm, respectively. The corresponding quality factors reduce to 78, 94, and 86 for a nanowire cavity standing on a sapphire substrate with a refractive index of 1.8. The mode quality factors are also calculated for the TE01 and TM01 modes, and the mode reflectivities are calculated from the mode quality factors.

The polyetherketone (PEK-c) guest-host polymer films doped with (4'-nitro)-3-azo-9-ethyl-carbazole (NAEC) were prepared. The films were poled by corona-onset poling at elevated temperature (COPET). The orientational order parameter of the chromophores NAEC in poled polymer film was determined by measuring the absorption spectra of the films before and after being poled. By using the two-level model, the measured dispersion of the refractive index of the polymer film, and the dispersion of the first hyperpolarizability of chromophore NAEC, the dispersion of the macroscopic second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) and linear electrooptic (EO) coefficients was evaluated for the NAEC/PEK-c guest-host polymer film. The theoretical method to design negative refractive index metamaterials by single negative permittivity metamaterials is presented. By designing the electric and magnetic response metamaterials separately, the complexity of the design work can be simplified a lot. For the magnetic response metamaterials, the metallic post structure is adopted. Varying the height of the post, the response wavelength can be adjusted linearly. For electric metamaterials, wire-mesh structure is adopted. The effective material parameters, including refractive index, impedance, permittivity and permeability are given. Such a structure has negative refractive index during a broad frequency band and easy to design.

In this paper, identical dual-wavelength fiber Bragg, gratings (FBGs) are theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. On the assistance of the Fourier theory, the gratings with symmetrical spectrum are designed in the case of weak refractive-index modulations. With the. perturbation technique, the results achieved in the previous step are modified to meet the strong refractive-index modulation gratings. Based on the coupled-mode theory, we have optimized and achieved the identical dual-wavelength FBGs with two channels that have equal bandwidth and even strength. We have also experimentally demonstrated the proposed FBGs, and the experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions with good agreement.

Based on the n(x, lambda), the calculation of the reflection spectrum for vertical cavity surface emitting lasers shows that the deviation of the central wavelength caused by the change of layer thickness is much more than that caused by the change of AlAs mole fractions. Therefore the control of the MBE growth rate is very important.

Small molecules are difficult to detect by conventional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy due to the fact that the changes in the refractive index resulted from the binding process of small biomolecules are quite small. Here, we report a simple and effective method to detect small biomolecule using SPR spectroscopy and electrochemistry by catalyzed deposition of metal ions on SPR gold film. As an example, the ascorbic acid-mediated deposition of Ag on gold film was monitored by in situ SPR spectrum. The deposition of Ag atom on gold film resulted in an obvious decrease of depth in SPR angular scan curves of reflectance intensity and minimum reflectivity angle. The depth change of the SPR reflectance intensity and minimum reflectivity angle curves mainly relied on the amount of Ag atom deposited on gold film that can be controlled by the concentration of ascorbic acid. By monitoring the deposition of Ag atom on gold film, ascorbic acid was detected in the concentration range of 2 x 10(-5) M to 1 x 10(-3) M. After each of detections, the SPR sensor surface was completely regenerated by a potential step that stripped off the Ag atom. Furthermore, the regeneration process of the sensor surface provides the feasibility for detecting the concentration of ascorbic acid by electrochemical method.

The glass sample based on the composition of 45PbF(2)-45GeO(2)-10WO(3) co-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ was prepared by the fusion method in two steps: melted at 950 degreesC for 20 similar to 25 min then annealed at 380 degreesC for 4 h. Through the V-prism it is found that the refractive index of host glass and the sample are 1.517 and 1.65 respectively. The transmittance was observed by using the ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectrometer in the wavelength range from 0.35 to 2.5mum. The transmittaitce of the host glass is beyond 73%. That of the sample is beyond 50% and there are characteristic absorption peaks of rare-earth ions. The emission spectrum was measured by using the Hitachi F-4500 fluorescent spectrometer pumped by 980 nm semiconductor laser. There are a strong emission peak at 530 nm and a weak peak at 650 nm.

Tunable photonic crystals were prepared by infiltrating mixed liquids into the voids of silica opals. The stop bands of the tunable photonic crystals were continuously tuned by changing the relative refraction index contrast n(mix)/ns(pheres) of the spheres and the mixed liquids by varying the volume fraction of the component of the mixed liquids. The peak wavelengths of the stop band have a red shift as the refractive index of the mixed liquids increases. The transmittance at the stop band decreases with the increase of the refractive index contrast n(mix)/n(spheres). The larger the diameter of silica opals is, the wider the tunable range of the stop band is. The position and transmittance of the peak wavelength obtained by the photonic band calculations agreed very well with the experimental data.

The relationship between the alpha-N index and physical properties of neutral phosphorus extractants is studied. Using the general alpha-N index which could describe extractants with minute difference in structure, the good correlation between it and various physical properties of the neutral phosphorus extractants (e.g., densities, refractive index, shift ratio of paper chromatography and IR frequencies of bond P = O) is obtained. The result indicates that general alpha-N index is a good topological index of organic compounds.
