Sediments and soils collected from the Ya-Er Lake area in China were analysed for the polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The results indicated the main pollution problems in the Ya-Er Lake area, which was heavily polluted by HCHs and chlorobenzenes, now is dominantly polluted by PCDD/Fs, PCBs and HCB. The occurrence of PCDD/Fs and PCBs with relatively high levels of HpCDDs, OCDD and low chlorinated-substituted PCBs, is attributed to the discharge of waste water and biodegradation. The vertical distributions of HCH-residues are related with the content of organic carbon and particle size. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

A discretely tunable Er-doped fiber-ring laser using a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. In this scheme, the combination of MZI and FBG acts as a discrete wavelength selector. Analysis of its transmission function shows that discrete wavelength tuning can be realized, and experiments demonstrate 64 single-mode outputs with a mode spacing of 181.7 pm, and the output power is quite stable in the whole tuning range. Two types of silicon-on-insulator thermo-optic variable optical attenuators (VOAs) based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a multimode-interference coupler are fabricated, one with thermal isolating grooves to improve heating efficiency and the other without Comparison of optical and electrical properties, such as insertion losses, the maximum attenuation levels and the corresponding power consumptions, and the response times, is carried out between the two types of VOAs. The comparison results Indicate that use of thermal isolating grooves leads to better values for most characteristics and is an effective way to improve the performance of Mach-Zehnder interferometer-type thermo-optic devices. Erbium-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon suboxide films containing silicon clusters (a-SiOx:H) were prepared. The samples exhibited photoluminescence (PL) peaks at around 750nm and 1.54 mu m, which could be assigned to the electron-hole recombination in silicon clusters and the intra-4f transition in Er3+, respectively. We compared annealing behaviors of Si clusters and Er3+ emission and found that Si clusters emission depends strongly upon crystallinity of Si clusters, whereas Er3+ emission is not sensitive to whether it is Si nanocrystals (nc-Si) or amorphous Si (a-Si) clusters. The erbium-doped a-SiOx:H films containing either a-Si clusters or nc-Si have the same kind of Er3+ -emitting centers. Based on these results, it is concluded that a-Si clusters can play the same role on Er3+ excitation as nc-Si. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) thin films were prepared by reactive thermal evaporation on the glass substrates. The effects of substrate temperatures (T-s) on the grain preferred orientation, the electrical and optical properties of ITO films were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that the preferred orientation of film changes from (222) to (400) as T, > 200 degrees C. It can be explained by that the low-index crystallographic planes are easier to be formed when the adatoms have high surface mobility. The Hall measurements indicated that both the concentration and mobility of carrier increase with increasing T,,,. The grain orientation of film does not influence the transmissivity and the carrier concentration, but enhances the carrier mobility. The transmissivity of ITO films is over 90% in the visible wavelength region (except that of the film deposited at 125 degrees C). A minimum resistivity of 5 X 10-4 Omega cm is achieved for the (400) preferred orientation film. Thus, the highest figure of merit of 3.5 x 10(-2) square/Omega is obtained for the film with (400) preferred orientation. The correlation between the preferred orientation and electrical and optical properties are discussed.

Six-period 4 nm GaN/10 nm AlxGa1-xN superlattices with different Al mole fractions x were prepared on (0001) sapphire substrates by low-temperature metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The linear electro-optic (Pockels) effect was studied by a polarization-maintaining fiber-optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer system with an incident light wavelength of 1.55 mu m. The measured electro-optic coefficients, gamma(13)=5.60 +/- 0.18 pm/V, gamma(33)=19.24 +/- 1.21 pm/V (for sample 1, x=0.3), and gamma(13)=3.09 +/- 0.48 pm/V, gamma(33)=8.94 +/- 0.36 pm/V (for sample 2, x=0.1), respectively, are about ten times larger than those of GaN bulk material. The enhancement effect in GaN/AlxGa1-xN superlattice can be attributed to the large built-in field at the interfaces, depending on the mole fraction of Al. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Using time-resolved photoluminescence and time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy, we explore the unique electron spin behavior in an InAs submonolayer sandwiched in a GaAs matrix, which shows very different spin characteristics under resonant and non-resonant excitations. While a very long spin relaxation lifetime of a few nanoseconds at low temperature is observed under non-resonant excitation, it decreases dramatically under resonant excitation. These interesting results are attributed to the difference in electron-hole interactions caused by non-geminate or geminate capture of photo-generated electron-hole pairs in the two excitation cases, and provide a direct verification of the electron-hole spatial correlation effect on electron spin relaxation. Based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is fabricated, in which two directional couplers serve as power splitter and combiner. The free carrier plasma dispersion effect of Si is adopted to achieve the phase modulation and the consequent intensity modulation of optical fields. The device presents an insertion loss of 2.61 dB and an extinction ratio of 19.6 dB. The rise time and fall time are 676 ns and 552 ns, respectively. For both, (Al,Ga)N with low Al content grown on a GaN nucleation layer and (AI,Ga)N with high Al content gown on an AlN nucleation layer, the inhomogeneous distribution of the luminescence is linked to the distribution of defects, which may be due to inversion domains. In the former system, defect regions exhibit a much lower Al content than the nominal one leading to a splitting of the respective luminescence spectra. In the latter system, a domain-like growth is observed with a pyramidal surface morphology and non-radiative recombination within the domain boundaries. (c) 2007 WILEYNCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We study electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a noninteracting quantum dot in each of its arms. Both a magnetic flux phi threading through the AB ring and the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction inside the two dots are taken into account. Due to the existence of the SO interaction, the electrons flowing through different arms of the AB ring will acquire a spin-dependent phase factor in the tunnel-coupling strengths. This phase factor, as well as the influence of the magnetic flux, will induce various interesting interference phenomena. We show that the conductance and the local density of states can become spin polarized by tuning the magnetic flux and the Rashba interaction strength. Under certain circumstances, a pure spin-up or spin-down conductance can be obtained when a spin-unpolarized current is injected from the external leads. Therefore, the electron spin can be manipulated by adjusting the Rashba spin-orbit strength and the structure parameters. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

A 40-channel 0.8-nm-spaced flat-top silica-based arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) with a tapered multimode interferometer (MMI) at the end of its input waveguide has been experimentally demonstrated for the first time. By adding the MMI, the 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are increased to 0.45 and 0.62 nm, respectively. The insertion loss (IS) of the device ranges from 3.8 to 6.8 dB. The IS uniformity is better than 3.0 dB. The crosstalk is better than -25 dB. Compared to the AWG with a rectangular MMI, the AWG with a tapered MMI shows better IS, crosstalk, and ripple. Ten-period 5.5 nm Si0.75Ge0.25/10.3 nm Si/2.5 nm Si0.5Ge0.5 trilayer asymmetric superlattice was prepared on Si (001) substrate by ultrahigh vacuum chemical vapor deposition at 500 degrees C. The stability of Mach-Zehnder interferometer was improved by utilizing polarization-maintaining fibers. According to the electro-optic responses of the superlattice with the light polarization along [110] and [-110], respectively, both electro-optic coefficients gamma(13) and gamma(63) of such asymmetric superlattice were measured. gamma(13) and gamma(63) are 2.4x10(-11) and 1.3x10(-11) cm/V, respectively, with the incident light wavelength at 1.55 mu m. 4.2 K photoluminescence (PL) and 77 K standard Hall-effect measurements were performed for In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1-xAs metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor (HEMT) structures grown on GaAs substrates with different indium contents in the InxGa1-xAs well or different Si delta-doping concentrations. It was found that electron concentrations increased with increasing PL intensity ratio of the "forbidden" transition (the second electron subband to the first heavy-hole subband) to the sum of the "allowed" transition (the first electron subband to the first heavy-hole subband) and the forbidden transition. And electron mobilities decreased with increasing product of the average full width at half maximum of allowed and forbidden transitions and the electron effective mass in the InxGa1-xAs quantum well. These results show that PL measurements are a good supplemental tool to Hall-effect measurements in optimization of the HEMT layer structure. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Four well-resolved peaks with very narrow linewidths were found in the D-band and G'-band features of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). This fact implies the occurrence of additional van Hove singularities (vHSs) in the joint density of states (JDOS) of DWNTs, which is consistent with theoretical calculations. According to their peak frequencies and theoretical analysis, the two outer peaks can be deduced to originate from a strong coupling between the two constituent tubes of commensurate DWNTs and the two inner peaks were curvature-related and assigned to originate from the two tubes with a weak coupling. This observation and elucidation constitute the first Raman evidence for atomic correlation and the resulting electronic structure change of the two constituent tubes in DWNTs. This result opens the possibility of predicting and modifying the electronic properties of DWNTs for their electronic applications.

The control of shape and spatial correlation of InAs-InAlAs-InP(001) nanostructure superlattices has been realized by changing the As overpressure during the molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of InAs layers. InAs quantum wires (QWRs) are obtained under higher As overpressure (1x10(-5) Torr), while elongated InAs quantum dots (QDs) are formed under lower As overpressure (5x10(-6) or 2.5x10(-6) Torr). Correspondingly, spatial correlation changes from vertical anti-correlation in QWR superlattices to vertical correlation in QD superlattices, which is well explained by the different alloy phase separation in InAlAs spacer layers triggered by the InAs nanostrcutures. It was observed that the alloy phase separation in QD superlattices could extend a long distance along the growth direction, indicating the vertical correlation of QD superlattices can be kept in a wide range of spacer layer thickness.
