Monte Carlo simulation on the basis of the comblike coarse grained nonpolar/polar (NP) model has been carried out to study the polar group saturation effect on physical gelation of amphiphilic polymer solutions. The effects of polar group saturation due to hydrogen bonding or ion bridging on the sol-gel phase diagram, microstructure of aggregates, and chain conformation of amphiphilic polymer solutions under four different solvent conditions to either the nonpolar backbone or the polar side chain in amphiphilic polymer chains have been investigated. It is found that an increase of polar group saturation results in a monotonically decreased critical concentration of gelation point, which can be qualitatively supported by the dynamic theological measurements on pectin aqueous solutions. Furthermore, various solvent conditions to either the backbone or the side chain have significant impact on both chain conformation and microstructure of aggregates. When the solvent is repulsive to the nonpolar backbone but attractive to the polar side chain, the polymer chains are collapsed, and the gelation follows the mechanism of colloidal packing; at the other solvent conditions, the gelation follows the mechanism of random aggregation.

Monodispersed nanoparticles of Ag(I)-polymer hybrids have been prepared by using designed crown-ether-centred two-armed copolymers to chelate Ag+ ions at the interface of organic-aqueous solutions. The copolymer-Ag+ complex nanoparticles, as well as the reduced copolymer-Ag nanoparticles, have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The particle size can be varied by simply changing the polymer concentration, the monomers, and/or the molecular weight. The copolymer-Ag(I) hybrids exhibit weak photoluminescence, which was substantially enhanced after the hybrids were reduced to copolymer-silver nanoparticles with UV irradiation.

The mass transfer behaviors of Cd(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), and Eu(III) in sulfuric acid solution using microporous hollow fiber membrane (HFM) containing bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid (commercial name Cyanex302) were investigated in this paper. The experimental results showed that the values of the mass transfer coefficients (K-w) decreased with an increase of H+ concentration and increased with an increase of extractant Cyanex302 concentration. The mass transfer resistance of Eu3+ was the largest because K-w value of Eu3+ was the smallest. The order of mass transfer rate of metal ions at low pH was Cd > Zn > Fe > Eu. Mixtures of Zn2+ and Eu3+ or of Zn2+ and Cd2+ were well separated in a counter-current circulation experiment using two modules connected in series at different initial acidity and concentration ratio. These results indicate that a hollow fiber membrane extractor is capable of separating the mixture compounds by controlling the acidity of the aqueous solution and by exploiting different mass transfer kinetics. The interfacial activity of Cyanex302 in sulfuric acid solution was measured and interfacial parameters were obtained according to Gibbs adsorption equation.

The extractions of the selected rare earths (Sc, Y, La and Gd) from hydrochloric acid solutions have been investigated using bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)-mono thiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302, HL) in heptane as an extractant. The results demonstrate that the extractions of rare earths occur via the following reaction: Sc(OH)(2+) + 2[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Sc(OH)L-2 (.) 2(HL)]((O)) + 2H(+) Y3+ + 3[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Y(HL2)(3)]((O)) + 3H(+) La(OH)(2)(+) + 3[(HL)(2)](O) double left right arrow [La(OH)(2)L (.) 5(HL)]((O)) + H+ Gd(OH)(2+) + 3[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Gd(OH)L-2 (.) 4(HL)]((O)) + 2H(+) The pH(1/2) values and equilibrium constants of the extracted complexes have been deduced by taking into account the aqueous phase complexation of the metal ion with hydroxyl ligands and plausible complexes extracted into the organic phase. According to the pH(1/2) values, it is possible to realize mutual separation among Sc(III), Y(III), La(III) and Gd(III) with Cyanex 302 by controlling aqueous acidity.

The bastnasite of Baotou (China) was roasted in concentrated sulfuric acid at 250-300 degreesC and the calcined products were leached by water. Almost all rare earths (RE) were moved into solutions in trivalent along with some radioactive impurity thorium(IV) (Th(IV))which accounts for 0.4% of RE and other impurities such as Fe(III), Ca, F, P, etc. Through fractional extraction (seven stages for extraction and nine for scrubbing), the mass ratio of Th(IV) and RE (ThO2/REO) in solution has decreased to 5 x 10(-6). The purity of ThO2 product recovered from organic phase is above 99%. The iron(III) in solutions can be removed in the form of precipitation by adding some magnesia into the solutions. Then RE can be concentrated by solvent extraction with 2-ethylhexyl phosphinic acid 2-ethylhexylester (P-507). The results of fractional extraction show that the concentration of total RE in aqueous solutions stripped by hydrochloric acid is over 200 g REO/I with the yield of RE above 99%. Individual RE can be attained by solvent extraction with P507 in the following process.

The partitioning behavior of four amino acids, cysteine, phenylalanine, methionine, and lysine in 15 aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) with different polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecular weights and phosphate buffers has been studied in the present paper. The phase diagrams of the systems are investigated together with the effect of the PEG molecular weight and pH of the phosphate solutions. The composition of these systems and some parameters such as density and refractive index are determined. The influences of salts in ATPSs, side chain structure of the amino acids, pH of ATPSs, and the PEG molecular weight on the distribution ratios of the amino acids have been studied. This work is useful for the purification of amino acids and the separation of some proteins whose main surface exposed amino acid residues are these four amino acids, respectively.

The coordination reactions during the solvent extraction of cerium(IV) and fluorine(l) from mixed nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid solutions by di-(2-ethylhexyl)-2-ethylhexylphosphonate, L (DEHEHP) in heptane have been investigated. The extraction data have been analyzed by graphical methods taking into account all plausible species extracted into the organic phase. Different variables influencing the extraction of Ce(IV), such as the concentrations of nitrate ions, hydrofluroric acid, nitric acid, and extractant have been studied. The results demonstrate that DEHEHP can extract not only Ce(NO3)(4) as Ce(NO3)4.2L and HF as HF (.) H2O (.) L, but both together as Ce(HF)(NO3)(4) (.) L. The extraction equilibrium equations are determined according to slope analysis and IR spectra. The equilibrium constants of the extracted complexes have been calculated, taking into account complexation between the metal ion and inorganic ligands in the aqueous phase and all plausible complexes extracted into the organic phase. It is also shown that boric acid, which was added into the mixed solutions to complex with F(I) is not extracted by DEHEHP, and neither does it affect the extraction of cerium(IV) and HF, nor change the extraction mechanism.

For the first time, a novel prefractionation method used in proteomic analysis was developed, which is performed by a novel aqueous two-phase system (NATPS) composed of n-butanol, (NH4)(2)SO4, and water. It can separate proteomic proteins into multigroups by one-step extraction. The phase-separation conditions of n-butanol solutions were studied in the presence of commonly used inorganic salts. The NATPS was subsequently developed. Using human serum albumin, zein, and gamma-globulin as model proteins, the separation effectiveness of the NATPS for protein was studied under affection factors, i.e., pH, n-butanol volume, protein, or salt concentration. The model and actual protein samples were separated by the NATPS and then directly used for gel electrophoresis without separating the target proteins from phase-forming reagents. It revealed that the NATPS could separate proteomic proteins into multigroups by one-step extraction. The NATPS has the advantages of rapidity, simplicity, low cost, biocompability, and high efficiency. It need not separate target proteins from the phase-forming reagents. The NATPS has great significance in separation and extraction of proteomic proteins, as well as in methodology.

Physical gelation in the concentrated Pluronic F127/D2O solution has been studied by a combination of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and Monte Carlo simulation. A 15% F127/D2O solution exhibits a sol-gel transition at low temperature and a gel-sol transition at the higher temperature, as evidenced by SANS and Monte Carlo simulation studies. Our SANS and simulation results also suggest that the sol-gel transition is dominated by the formation of a percolated polymer network, while the gel-sol transition is determined by the loss of bound solvent. Furthermore, different diffusion behaviors of different bound solvents and free solvent are observed. We expect that this approach can be further extended to study phase behaviors of other systems with similar sol-gel phase diagrams.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation during the electrooxidation process in 0.1 M KCl aqueous Solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine on the GCE. Electron transfer processes of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs at the modified electrode are studied by both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Changing the solution pH would result in the variation of the terminal group's charge state, based on which the surface pK(a) values were estimated. The copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) multilayer films were formed on 4-ABA/GCE prepared in aqueous solution, and which exhibit good electrochemical behavior with high stability.

Dispersion copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) with 2-methylacryloylxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) has been carried out in aqueous salts solution containing ammonium sulfate and sodium chloride with poly(acryloylxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDAC) as the stabilizer and 2,2'-azobis[2-(2-inidazolin-2-yl)propane]-dihydro chloride (VA-044) as the initiator. A new particle formation mechanism of the dispersion polymerization for the present system has been proposed. The effects of inorganic salts and stabilizer concentration on dispersion polymerization have been investigated. The results show that varying the salt concentration could affect the morphology and molecular weight of the resultant copolymer particles significantly. With increasing the stabilizer concentration, the particle size decreased at first and then increased, meanwhile the effect on the copolymer molecular weight was the contrary. These results had been rationalized based on the proposed mechanism.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients for ethylamine in heavy water (D2O) and in light water (H2O) have been measured in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz at 25 degrees C. A single relaxational process has been observed in these two kinds of solutions. From the concentration dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters, and following the reaction mechanism proposed by Eigen et al. for ethylamine in H2O, the causes of the relaxations have been attributed to a perturbation of an equilibrium associated with a deuteron or proton transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been estimated from deuterioxide or hydroxide ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency, and the kinetic isotope effects have been determined. In addition, the standard volume changes of the reactions have been calculated from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength, and the adiabatic compressibility has also been determined from the density and sound velocity for ethylamine in D2O and in H2O, respectively. These results are compared with those for propylamine and butylamine and are discussed in relation to the different kinetic properties between D2O and H2O, the reaction radii derived by Debye theory, and the structural properties of the reaction intermediate.

1:1 complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (CD) with three amino acids (Gly, Phe and Trp) have been detected as ions in the gas phase using infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In contrast with the positive ion ESI mass spectra of simple aqueous solutions, the aggregates and adducts usually formed in the ESI process did not appear in the positive ion ESI spectra of solutions buffered with ammonium acetate (NH4Ac), even at higher analyte concentrations, These studies suggest that addition of buffer and/or use of a low analyte concentration should be used to overcome formation of aggregates and metal ion adducts in such mass spectrometry studies. Also, the deprotonated complexes are dissociated by collision induced dissociation (CID) to form an abundant product ion, the deprotonated CD, requiring transfer of a proton to the amino acid carboxyl group, To understand formation of complexes in the gas phase, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate free amino acids (AAs) from complexes in an incubated solution. The ESI mass spectra of the GPC fractions show the presence of 1:1 complexes of both CD-aromatic amino acids and CD-aliphatic amino acids. Compared with CD-aliphatic amino acid complexes, CD-aromatic amino acid complexes appear to be destabilized in the gas phase, possibly because the hydrophobic interaction which binds the aromatic group of amino acids in the CD cavity in solution may become repulsive when solvent evaporates from the droplets during the electrospray process, whereas those complex ions formed as proton bound dimers are stabilized by electrostatic forces, the major binding force for such complexes in the gas phase. In addition, the GPC technique coupled with off-line ESI-MS can rapidly separate CD complexes by size, and provides some information on the character of the complexes in solution. The aqueous complexation of lanthanide complexes of citrate in pH 7.4 solutions has been studied by using lanthanide-induced shift and relaxation times measurement methods. These results indicate that citrate coordinate via 3-hydroxyl and 3-carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and form 1:2 (Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through lanthanide series. We suggest a new coordination geometry which is different from that described in literature.
