Normal-incident infrared absorption in the 8-12-mu m-atmospheric spectral window in the InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot superlattice is observed. Using cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, we find that the InGaAs quantum dots are perfectly vertically aligned in the growth direction (100). Under the normal incident radiation, a distinct absorption peaked at 9.9 mu m is observed. This work indicates the potential of this quantum-dot superlattice structure for use as normal-incident infrared imaging focal arrays application without fabricating grating structures. 30-period InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot superlattice was fabricated by MBE. Using cross sectional transmission electron microscopy, the InGaAs quantum dots were found to be perfectly vertically aligned in the growth direction (100). Under normally incident radiation, a distinct absorption in the 8.5 similar to 10.4 mu m range peaked at 9.9 mu m was observed. The normally incident infrared absorption in vertically aligned quantum dot superlattice in the 8 similar to 12 mu m range was realized for the first time. This result indicates the potential application of the quantum dot superlattice structure without grating as normally incident infrared detector focal plane arrays.

A 10-InAs-island-layer vertically coupled quantum dot structure on (001) GaAs was grown and investigated by molecular beam epitaxy and transmission electron microscopy. The result shows that the vertically aligned InAs islands are asymmetrical along the two < 110 > directions on the (001) growth plane. Such an asymmetry in the vertically coupled quantum dot structure can be explained with the chemical polarity in the III-V compound semiconductors.

Based on the implications of a pellet experiment,we have designed and implemented a low temperature(≤90℃) approach to generate native patterned,vertically aligned ZnO nanoarrys without any templates or catalysts.This simple,economic and spontaneous patterning process offers a promising avenue for overcoming several inherent limitations of the artificial manners[1].While the purity,orientation and electrical properties of the as prepared materials allow them to be applied in various fields.

Growth of MCM-22 zeolite films on glass substrates was studied with the focus on the understanding of the unusual vertical crystal orientation. The films formed were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Separate thin disk-like MCM-22 crystals were found vertically oriented at the early crystallization stage. With crystallization the crystals grew into thick disks and finally into continuous films. The vertically oriented MCM-22 thin crystals could be developed from the orientation of columnar MCM-22 nuclei, which have larger parameters in their c-directions than those in a and b directions. The preferred orientation of MCM-22 nuclei and the fast growth rate in the layer direction are responsible for the vertical growth of MCM-22 zeolite films. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The particulate matter concentration above the seabed is usually assumed to decrease with height, following an exponential or Rouse profile. Many particulate matter concentration profiles with a peak were found on the North Mediterranean bottom water at a few tens of metres above the bottom. A particle size signal at the same altitude was found in this area and on the New York Eight shelf. It is assumed that this unexpected shape is due to a cloud of resuspended cohesive sediments originating from an impulse resuspension process. A simplified three-dimensional numerical model is proposed to describe the behaviour of resuspended particulate matter that originates from a sediment impulse vertically injected in the bottom water. This model reproduces the concentration profile shape observed, and it gives indications concerning the length and time characteristics of such a cloud, depending on the water velocity and bottom boundary layer properties.

A new particle image technique was developed to analyze the dispersion of tracer particles in an internally circulating fluidized bed (ICFB). The movement course and the concentration distribution of tracer particles in the bed were imaged and the degree of inhomogeneity of tracer particles was analyzed. The lateral and axial dispersion coefficients of particles were calculated for various zones in ICFB. Results indicate that the lateral diffusion coefficient in the fluidized bed with uneven air distribution is significantly higher than that in uniform bubbling beds with even air distribution. The dispersion coefficients are different along bed length and height.
