In this paper, the governing equations and the analytical method of the secondorder asymptotic field for the plane-straln crack problems of mode I have been presented. The numerical calculation has been carried out. The amplitude coefficients k2 of the second term of the asymptotic field have been determined after comparing the present results with some fine results of the finite element calculation. The variation of coefficients k2 with changes of specimen geometry and developments of plastic zone have been analysed. It is shown that the second term of the asymptotic field has significant influence on the near-crack-tip field. Therefore, we may reasonably argue that both the J-integral and the coefficient k2 can beeome two characterizing parameters for crack initiation.

Gloeobacter violaceus, a cyanobacterium lack of thylakoids, is refractory to genetic manipulations because its cells are enveloped by a thick gelatinous sheath and in colonial form. In this study, a large number of single cells were obtained by repeated pumping with a syringe with the gelatinous sheath removed. And an exogenous broad host range plasmid pKT210 was conjugatively transferred into G. violaceus. Analyses with dot-blot hybridization and restriction mapping showed that the exogenous plasmid pKT210 had been introduced into G. violaceus and stably maintained with no alteration in its structure. pKT210 extracted from G. violaceus exconjugants could be transformed into the mcr - mrr - E. coli strain DH10B but not the mcr(+) mrr(+) strain DH5alpha, which suggests that a methylase system may be present in G. violaceus.

The first successful case of transgenic fish was achieved in 1984. It is in a model system that the integration and expression of recombinant human growth hormone (hGH) in host red common carp (Cyprinus carpio, red var.) have been thoroughly studied. Recently, the integration sites have been recovered and characterized. Compared with non-transgenic peers, hGH-transgenic fish are prior in dietary utilization and growth performance. In view of bio-safety and bio-ethics, an "all-fish" construct CAgcGH, grass carp growth hormone fused with common carp P-actin promoter, has been generated and transferred into Yellow River carp (C carpio, local strain in Yellow River) fertilized eggs. Under middle-scale trial, CAgcGH-transgenics show higher growth rate and food conversion efficiency than the controls, which is consistent to laboratory findings. To avoid the potential impact of transgenic fish on the environment, a sterile strain of transgenic triploid fish has been successfully produced. The "all-fish" transgenic common carp is also approved safe enough as daily food, according to a test based on the pathological principles of new medicines issued by the Ministry of Health of China. The "all-fish" transgenic common carp with growth enhancement is now ready for market, but looking for governmental authorization. A new packaged fiber Bragg grating using bimetal cantilever beam as the strain agent is presented. The grating is two-point attached on one specific surface of the bimetal beam which consists of two metallic material with different thermal-expansion coefficient. Thereby the grating can be compressed or stretched along with the cantilever beam while temperature varies and temperature compensation can be realized. At the same time, grating chirping can be avoided for the particular attaching method. Experiment results demonstrated that the device is able to automatically compensate temperature induced wavelength shift. The temperature dependence of Bragg wavelength reduced to -0.4 pm/degrees C over the temperature range from -20 to 60 degrees C. This fiber grating package technique is cost effective and can be used in strain sensing. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We report on the material growth and device performance characterization of a strain-compensated In0.54Ga0.46As/In0.51Al0.49As quantum cascade laser at lambda similar to 8 mu m. For 2 mu s pulse at a 5 kHz repetition rate, laser action is achieved up to room temperature (30 degrees C). The tuning coefficient d lambda/dT is 1.37 nm K-1 between 83 K and 163 K and 0.60 nm K-1 in the range from 183 K to 303 K. The peak output power is reported to be similar to 11.3 mW per facet at 293 K and the corresponding threshold current density is 5.69 kA cm(-2).

A generalized scattering matrix formalism is constructed to elucidate the interplay of electron resonance, coherence, dephasing, inelastic scattering, and heterogeneity, which play important roles in the physics of long-range electron transfer/transport. The theory consists of an extension of the standard Buttiker phase-breaking model and an analytical expression of the electron transmission coefficient for donor-bridge-acceptor systems with arbitrary length and sequence. The theory incorporates the following features: Dephasing-assisted off-resonance enhancement, inelasticity-induced turnover, resonance enhancement and its dephasing-induced suppression, dephasing-induced smooth superexchange-hopping transition, and heterogeneity effects. We present a strain-compensated InP-based InGaAs/InAlAs photovoltaic quantum cascade detector grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy. The detector is based on a vertical intersubband transition and electron transfer on a cascade of quantum levels which is designed to provide longitudinal optical phonon extraction stairs. By careful structure design and growth, the whole epilayer has a residual strain toward InP substrate of only -2.8 x 10(-4). A clear narrow band detection spectrum centered at 4.5 mu m has been observed above room temperature for a device with 200 x 200 mu m(2) square mesa.

The spin splitting in GaN-based heterostructures has been investigated by means of circular photogalvanic effect experiments under uniaxial strain. The ratios of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling coefficients (R/D ratios) have been measured in AlxGa1-xN/GaN heterostructures with various Al compositions. It is found that the R/D ratio increases from 4.1 to 19.8 with the Al composition of the AlxGa1-xN barrier varied from 15% to 36%. The Dresselhaus coefficient of bulk GaN is experimentally obtained to be 0.4 eV angstrom(3). The results indicate that the spin splitting in GaN-based heterostructures can be modulated effectively by the polarization-induced electric fields.

A high molar extinction coefficient heteroleptic polypyridyl ruthenium sensitizer, featuring a conjugated electron-rich selenophene unit in its ancillary ligand, has been synthesized and demonstrated as an efficient sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells. A nanocrystalline titania film stained with this sensitizer shows improved optical absorptivity, which is highly desirable for dye-sensitized solar cells with a thin photoactive layer. With preliminary testing, this sensitizer has already achieved a high efficiency of 10.6% measured under the air mass 1.5 global conditions.

The transfer of sodium cation facilitated by (anthraquinone-1-yloxy) methane-15-crown-5(L) has been investigated at the water/1,2-dichloroethane microinterface supported at the tip of a micropipette. The diffusion coefficient of (anthraquinone-1-yloxy) methane-15-crown-5 obtained was (3.42 +/- 0.20) x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). The steady-state voltammograms were observed for forward and backward scans due to sodium ion transfer facilitated by L with 1:1 stoichiometry. The mechanism corresponded to an interfacial complexation (TIC) and interfacial dissociation (TID) process. The association constant was calculated to be log beta(o) = 11.08 +/- 0.03 in the DCE phase. The association constant of other alkali metals (Li+, K+, Rb+) were also obtained.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is employed to investigate the effect of solution viscosity on the rate constants of electron transfer (ET) reaction between potassium ferricyanide in water and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in 1,2-dichloroethane. Either tetrabutylammonium (TBA(+)) or ClO4- is chosen as the common ion in both phases to control the interfacial potential drop. The rate constant of heterogeneous ET reaction between TCNQ and ferrocyanide produced in-situ, k(12), is evaluated by SECM and is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the aqueous solution and directly proportional to the diffusion coefficient of K4Fe(CN)(6) in water when the concentration of TCNQ in the DCE phase is in excess. The k(12) dependence on viscosity is explained in terms of the longitudinal relaxation time of the solution. The rate constant of the heterogeneous ET reaction between TCNQ and ferricyanide, k(21), is also obtained by SECM and these results cannot be explained by the same manner.

Glass micropipettes with silanized inner walls can be filled with an organic solvent for voltammetric measurements in an aqueous solution. This arrangement was employed to investigate systematically the mechanism of facilitated potassium ion transfer by an ionophore dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) across a micro-water/1.2-dichloroethane(W/DCE) interface supported at the tip of a silanized micropipette. Our experimental results verify that this facilitated ion transfer across the liquid/liquid interface did occur by an interfacial complexation-dissociation process (TIC-TID mechanism). The ratio of the diffusion coefficient of DB18C6 to that of its complexed ion in the DCE phase was calculated to be 1.74 +/- 0.07.

In this paper, a novel monoaza-B15C5 derivative, N-(2-tosylamino)-isopentyl-monoaza-15-crown-5 (L), is used as an ionophore to facilitate alkali metal cations transfer across a water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interface. Well-defined voltammetric behaviors are observed at the polarized W/DCE interfaces supported at micro- and nano-pipets except Cs+. The diffusion coefficient of this ionophore in the DCE phase is calculated to be equal to (3.3+/-0.2) x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). The experimental results indicate that a 1:1 (metal: ionophore) complex is formed at the interface with a TIC/TID mechanism. The selectivity of this ionophore towards alkali ions follows the sequence Na+ > Li+ > K+ > Rb+ > Cs+. The logarithm of the association constants (log beta(1)(0)) of the LiL+, NaL+, KL+ and RbL+ complexes in the DCE phase are calculated to be 10.6, 11.6, 9.0 and 7.1, respectively. The kinetic parameters are determined by steady-state voltammograms using nanopipets. The standard rate constants (k(0)) for Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+ transfers facilitated by L are 0.54+/-0.05, 0.63+/-0.09, 0.51+/-0.04 and 0.46+/-0.06 cm s(-1), respectively. The pH values of aqueous solution have little effect on the electrochemical behaviors of these facilitated processes. The results predicate that this new type of ionophore might be useful to fabricate electrochemical sensor of sodium ion.
